[edit]I corrected the information in this article relating to the source of the name, using information found in DK Eyewitness Travel Guide - China, published by Dorling Kindersley, 2005. --Sam 20:54, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Splitting the article
[edit]This article should be split into articles entitled Aberdeen (Hong Kong) and Aberdeen Harbour. Aberdeen (Hong Kong) (interwiking to zh:香港仔) refers to the town area on the northern coast of Aberdeen Harbour, while Aberdeen Harbour (interwiking to zh:香港仔避風塘) refers to the habour between Aberdeen town and Ap Lei Chau. --202.40.137.198 (talk) 07:45, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
Just rename it
[edit]This article is actually about Aberdeen, and so should immediately be renamed Aberdeen (Hong Kong). Whether a separate article about the harbour is justified might be considered when there is material to warrant it. I can't see that anyone can oppose an article about this major Hong Kong town, and that the content is already contained in this article. I will proceed soon unless there is rapid disagreement here - though it would be my first rename, and I'll have to get those interwiki and other links right. Anyone else can do it first. Earthlyreason (talk) 09:44, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
- Agreed. Aberdeen (Hong Kong) would be far better title. If one splits it into two then I think that would make two poor quality pages. The new target is a disamb page and needs to be deleted first. I will request. Ronhjones (Talk) 22:18, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
- The request was done, and I was therefore able to move the page Ronhjones (Talk) 23:48, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
- I'm also thinking that Aberdeen Harbour could be a separate page. Or at least a coherent section of this page. I also note that it used to be called Aberdeen Bay (eg this 1845 map). Onanoff (talk) 07:58, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
Etymology
[edit]In the etymology section, can someone absorb this, taken from Transliteration into Chinese characters.
- Aberdeen, a common name for places and people, as 鴨巴甸 (yā bā diàn), with 鴨 (鸭) meaning duck. A place in Hong Kong having the same name, Aberdeen Harbour, was originally called 香港仔 (xiāng gǎng zǐ), meaning "Hong Kong minor". It is now the official name of that place, but 鴨巴甸 is still used in a colloquial way.

Notice of requested move
[edit]It has been proposed to move Aberdeen to Aberdeen, Scotland or Aberdeen city, and to move Aberdeen (disambiguation) to Aberdeen. The discussion about this is here. --Una Smith (talk) 16:25, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

To add to article
[edit]To add to this article: a map. It's ridiculous that one isn't already included. 173.88.246.138 (talk) 19:30, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
History
[edit]While the article claims Aberdeen Village used to be called Hong Kong, I think this village should be what is now known as Shouson Hill and the Deep Water Bay used to be called Hong Kong. This can be found in old maps. 182.239.119.86 (talk) 13:04, 28 January 2023 (UTC)
