Claim about Birnbaum's proof of the likelihood principle

[edit]

The article has a recently-added claim:

In fact Birnbaum's alleged proof of the likelihood principle, however celebrated, has been shown to be flawed by Deborah G. Mayo in Error and Inference: Recent Exchanges on Experimental Reasoning, Reliability, and the Objectivity and Rationality of Science (Mayo and Spanos Eds, Cambridge, 2010,) chapter 7, pp. 305-314.

I have written to an expert on the likelihood principle. He has informed me that the alleged proof by Mayo is nonsense, in his opinion. He points out that the Mayo paper appears in a book which is edited by Mayo, and unlike the Birnbaum proof, appears never to have appeared in a peer-reviewed journal.

I will therefore delete this particular paragraph as insufficiently well sourced. Bill Jefferys (talk) 18:35, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
