Merge article
[edit]- Was it worth creating an entire article about the name itself? -Acjelen 13:49, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Well! Somebody needs a hug (and an English class). At least this entry has some cultural basis, in distinct contrast to the disproportionately large number of Wikipedia articles that childishly obsess over video games, slavish cataloguing of the plots of crappy television shows and fantasy comic books. But if we start going down the road of which articles are worthy of inclusion, we will never stop. With due respect, why don't you both go try to write some worthy articles? 69.30.112.10 01:16, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
- If you keep the article dont merge it with Andrea, isn't that a different name completely? 220.253.101.49 11:17, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- I'm agreed with the above. There is no need to merge the article with Andrea, its a completely different name. I'm also for keeping the article as a whole - it does have some relevance Blacksilkandy 21:54, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
- I think you should merge the two, so that all necessary and relavant info is there. This article still is informing about my name anyways —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.5.217.100 (talk) 01:55, 5 April 2007 (UTC).
- Keep Andrea is a female's name, while Andrew's a male's name. As Andrew is A very old name and there have been some very noteable andrews over time i think this one is a keeper. Wiki ian 15:57, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
- I'm delisting the suggested merge, Andrew and Andrea are different names (or at least my cousin Andrea tells me, Andrew) WilyD 13:57, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
- Andrea is the female name for Andrew, but also the male's italian name. See below Androo123 (talk) 05:41, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
Another forms of Andrew
[edit]french: Andre
german: Andreas, Andrea (female)
Tacoonda: Tacoon
polish: Andrzej
spanish: Andres
italian: Andrea
croatian: Andrija, also Andrej
serbian: Andrija
swedish: Anders —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 89.51.3.193 (talk) 19:48, 15 March 2007 (UTC).
Exactly! I don't know why the variant Andrés appears to be only from Iceland. In spanish it is very common, I have this name Andrés hehe... and let me say it's been very popular the last decade, at least in Colombia. Like... now everyone has it. Well hope someone consider this... thank you! Kool Lat'n SD (talk) 02:37, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
About the etymology
[edit]ανήρ (anēr), genitive ανδρός (andrós): it means "man" in the sense of the sexual genre, as the latin vir meant. "Corageous, strong" is only a derivated meaning. I don't find very honest the fact that many languages don't mention the real etimology. I hope they don't do this only because Andrea is also given to women. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.55.52.234 (talk) 13:33, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Real etymology?
[edit]The German article on "Andreas" has information conflicting with this article. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andreas
"Anders als vielfach behauptet, leitet sich der Name Andreas nicht direkt von griech. andrós ab, dem Genitiv des Substantivs anêr („Mann“). Andreas stammt vom altgriechischen Wort andreia für „Tapferkeit, Tüchtigkeit, Mannhaftigkeit“ beziehungsweise vom Adjektiv andreios für „mannhaft, tapfer, tüchtig“ ab. Diese sind jedoch Ableitungen von „anêr“."
Translation:
"Different from what is commonly claimed, the name Andreas is not derived from the Greek word andrós, the genitive of the noun anêr ("man"). Andreas is derived from the Old Greek word andreia ("valor, proficiency, manliness") and the adjective andreios (manly, valorous, proficient), respectively."
Which one is correct? If the latter is correct, I would strongly recommend checking the Greek translations of andreia and andreios again, as the German terms used are somewhat ambiguous.
