I have contacted the local librarian and hopefully will get access to a whole heap of historical information of Barrenjoey and the surrounding areas, should be great! If i can get access then i should be able to write more about the customs house as well as update a few other articles about the role of pittwater in shipping in the early 19th century. Spelling

[edit]

Here's a link to an article on the Barranjoey/Barrenjoey spelling controversy at www.barranjoey.com

The above link speaks of the historical confusion over the correct spelling, however contemporary Sydneysiders spell it as Barrenjoey, and it is spelt this way in all contemporary (official) literature. As this is a contemporary encyclopedia, it should be spelt with the correct contemporary spelling.
Barrenjoey is not a locality or suburb, the suburb in question is Palm Beach - which already has an article here. There is, however, a Barrenjoey Head, which is the southern headland of the entrance to Broken Bay, upon which stands Barrenjoey Lighthouse. I believe this article is an article mostly about Barrenjoey Lighthouse - information about "Barrenjoey Head" I think can be incorporated into the Palm Beach article, if not already.

I removed the link/reference due to the fact the site now is owned by a financial company Barranjoey Capital, a private investment management firm and no longer contains the information regarding the spelling 'controversy'.

I restored an archived version of that source. --Muhandes (talk) 07:00, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

name source

[edit]

I've tried finding a better source for the original naming of Barrenjoey by Arthur Phillip on March 2, 1788. I found this record of Phillipin the area on that day, and naming Pitt Water, but not Barrenjoey. http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks/e00101.html I'm confused, this date is quoted widely, but is not in that source.
