The sorting of names follows WP:NAMESORT and WP:MCSTJR. Your quote from WP:Sort key applies to abbreviations and characters which mean common nouns, not proper names. The article name is "Clifford C. Hastings" and should be sorted as "Hastings, Clifford C." (with the period). I believe these guidelines are edited sometimes, I thought that last time I saw it, the period was not to be used, I'll correct that. Kraxler (talk) 19:48, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You quoted "used in place of words", which I repeated in my answer above. The middle initials do not stand for words, but for proper names of persons. Besides, WP:Sort key is a general rule, while WP:NAMESORT is a more specific rule applying especially to names of persons in biographical articles. I quote: "Gerhard Schröder is sorted by DEFAULTSORT:Schroder, Gerhard" not Schroder, Gerhard Fritz Kurt; "Robert J. Smith II sorts as Category:New Jersey politicians|Smith, Robert J., II". I suggest you take it to RfC, and then WP:NAMESORT should be amended to state explicitly how to proceed in case of middle initials.
Besides, I'd like to point out again that edit summaries are not supposed to repeat the edit, but give a summary of the edito's action. You have added middle names to bios lately, and instaed of giving a source for the info, you have repeated the name in the edit summary. Please read, and try to understand WP:Edit summary#How to summarize. I ask you to state a source for the middle names at Walter W. Stokes, Chauncey B. Hammond, Roy M. Page and here (Clifford C.
