That Background Section (as of 13Feb2014) =

[edit]

That introduction needs some work. It reads like a sports heroine book aimed at little girls. In the 1970's the notion of distance running as a profession was dubious for either gender in the age of shamateurism. A male might well get the same parental objection in terms of a profession. Financial compensation was technically grounds for being banned from the sport, therefore was only obtained "under the table", even if it was a rather open secret. In addition, only the most elite could command any really considerable compensation (and only in Europe), the career at the top quite short, and can come to end quickly and prematurely from injury. Thus an objection to the sport as a profession in the 1970's is not merely a matter of gender bias.Jszigeti (talk) 20:06, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Six years later, much of the same criticism still holds water. We don't even get her parents' names (let alone anything else about them except their one doubt), and her brothers aren't mentioned until the section about her death. Did she have children? Where did she go to school or college, or teach? --Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 14:16, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe another picture?

[edit]

The picture shows Waitz in a wig, after she got cancer. I suggest another picture, simply because she looked like this for a very short period of time. Slightly unfamiliar to most of the people who know anything about her.
