Merge with Leasehold estate?
[edit]This article and leasehold estate is very similar. Although it might be non-obvious to a layperson to refer to landlord-tenant law as leasehold law, they are substantially the same topic. For example the last three-quarters of the leasehold estate page discussing tenant/landlord rights and duties are essentially identical to this page though structured differently. --Unavoidable (talk) 18:18, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
- You make a good point about the similarity of the articles. I do think they should remain separate. A leasehold estate is a discrete property right, while landlord-tenant law covers all of the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants. The rights and duties section is more properly included in this article I think. I also think this article has the potential for expansion (and it should be expanded), and once that happens the content will run far afield of what could be in a merged leasehold estate article. But you make a good point and I would like to see what other folks think. Verkhovensky (talk) 19:48, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
- I concur with Verkhovensky. Certainly in England, it is also usual for these topics to be treated in different textbooks. Landlord and Tenant largely deals with the personal obligations of parties (including third parties), which are extremely numerous, and rights to determine the lease. The conveyancing and general land law aspects are usually dealt with separately, although there will of course be some overlap in the material (e.g. who can lawfully take possession). Globalization
[edit]As currently written (apart from a couple of sentences I just added to the lede), this seems to be entirely about landlord-tenant law in the United States. Clearly we need to have a global treatment of this global topic. From an initial look it seems like there is probably sufficient comparative scholarship to support such an article (as more than just a laundry list of "country A does B, country X does Y"). I am not volunteering to draft that just yet. But I did want to leave a note here to observe that from an edit-history standpoint, it might actually make more sense to move the existing article to Landlord–tenant law in the United States, and then plop a new article down on top of the redirect, rather than attempting to globalize this article in-place and then split off the US-specific content. -- Visviva (talk) 02:38, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
