"Liberation of Paris" article in "On This Day" is POV, French Propaganda
The article appears to be the work of a single, very nasty, French nationalist poster who ignores the basic fact that German forces withdrew, leaving only a small remnant.Scott Adler 01:04, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- Of course it was. It was made by the "very nasty French nationalist" Jean de Free French, who, without references, citations or images has made the article. Yes, the Germans honorably withdrew thenselves all the way home to die Fuhrer's bunker and left a few soldiers to die and/or be humiliated (?) I don't quite think so.Tourskin 05:16, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- All names of US and British military units and commanders were deleted from the current version. The Free French, acting on their own, could never have defeated a determined German garrison, as the Poles discovered in Warsaw. Once the entire German Army in northern France was destroyed at Falais, there was simply no Germans forces left to defend their position in Paris from the Allies.
- Perhaps Tourskin can name the German divisions that were left in the city, the Panzer regiments, the number of artillery pieces? I do not deny the bravery of the Free French, but they risked the destruction of their own city for no military purpose.
- The purpose of this article appears to be an insinuation that the Free French -- acting entirely on their own -- saved Paris from a nasty Allied occupation that would have forced them to use green money, and that perhaps they would have to learn to like hot dogs and bangers. As I said earlier, all names of participating US and British military units and commanders were deleted from the current version. As such, the article is pure propaganda, and I am glad it was removed from the front page.Scott Adler 21:27, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- Understand this Scott, the article is not the work of a "single, very nasty French Nationalist". Before I read the article I was under the impression that:
- American tanks smashed their way through Normandy and the presence of the American Tanks simultaneously stimulated French "uprising" and German surrenders.
- The article give sthe impression it was a French uprising.
- But now that I had a better look at it, all the Allied names have been removed. This is stupid. Ok fair point Scott, the Allies did most of the work and not a single Allied commander is present. This is stupid indeed. I'll discuss this on the talk page of the article. I thought you were suggesting that it was Germany's honorabl actions that led to Paris' fall. Well the refusal to burn it was honorable of themTourskin 02:59, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Main page image
Not really an error, as it needs a little bit of discussion, but the main image has a copyright tag on it (I personally think the tag is wrong). Could people concerned with main page images have a look at WT:NFCC#Free or not? I suspect we could put a PD template on the Goebels image, but I'm not sure whether we should do that, or leave it as it is. No-one seems to have noticed, as I observed at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/August 25, 2007. Carcharoth 08:58, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- Not that it has very much to do with this, but does there exist a list of images/media that has been removed because the copyright holder took action? --Kaizer13 17:56, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- Not that I know of. Try asking at WT:NFC, or various other places. Many of the people reading this page won't know. Carcharoth 01:29, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Time zone
Is there anyway I can set my time zone to greenwich mean time? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.36.182.217 (talk) 23:30, August 26, 2007 (UTC)
- First you'll need to register an account here and log in. Once you've done that, go to 'my preferences' at the top, then 'date and time'. Near the bottom is the entry for the time zone - change 'offset' to 0 to use GMT itself, or 1 for British Summer Time. Modest Genius talk 23:40, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you very much —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.36.182.217 (talk) 01:59, August 27, 2007 (UTC)
Featured picture tag
There is a tag on today's
featured picture asking for someone to copy it to the commons. As I have performed this move already, could a sysop please remove the tag to avoid others trying to do it and the confusion that will ensue? I know this really isn't the place to ask, but it will get dealt to quickly here - thanks in advance :-) --Ben 02:14, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Can the layout be changed for a liquid layout on Wikipedia?
I was wondering if we can have a more liquid design for Wikipedia without sacrificing the simplicity. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Amanjsingh (talk • contribs) 15:48, August 27, 2007 (UTC)
- There is already a large number of alternatives here Wikipedia:Main Page alternatives. If none of these suit you, you're welcome to design your own. Actually changing the default design is likely to be a very long and complicated debate and you would at least need an alternative proposal to get started Nil Einne 20:06, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
