Native American ancestry?

[edit]

There is no mention of Native American ancestry, nor RS for this, and he clearly identified as European American in his life. I have deleted him from List of Native American politicians.--Parkwells (talk) 20:51, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Children

[edit]

The article says that he had 5 children who grew to adulthood. So far I've identified:

  • Maj. Andrew G. C. Quay
  • Coral Quay
  • Richard Quay

Does anyone know anything about the other two? Martin of Sheffield (talk) 08:39, 17 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wife

[edit]
Agnes Barclay Quay

This sketch of his wife was removed.

It is identified as from "17 February 1895 "Mrs. Quay's Personality" Philadelphia Times page 12 and as by Philadelphia Times staff artist. FloridaArmy (talk) 20:09, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I don't question that. But we have a photograph of her in the article, we do not also need a sketch. Wehwalt (talk) 20:10, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
For one thing, the photograph is of a young woman. She was in her 20s when they married? And the professional sketch is of a much older wife. So they are indeed not equivalent. Secondly, we appear to exclude their children who died young. Thirdly, our coverage of her is severely lacking. I added the photo because it begins a process of improvement and inclusion. I was reverted so I posted it here. Sometimes views change and articles mature over time. FloridaArmy (talk) 20:31, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Agnes Quay is probably notable and deserving of an article. Their eldest child, Richard Rogers Quay, as a Pennsylvania legislator, is as well per WP:GNG. Wehwalt (talk) 23:43, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Especially because the son was accused of involvement in the misuse of state finds along with his father. He also, apparently, was offered his father's senate seat after Matthew Quay died but declined it. The article has lots of problems. It relies very heavily on a critique of the "Gilded Age" and lacks context and coverage of other issues. It also has contradictions claiming in the opening Quay was only focused on Pennsylvania but going into details in the body on his involvement in national politics and national elections including playing an important role in helping defeat Cleveland's re-election campaign in New York and in choosing national Republican campaigns. It also does little to contrast Quay with his Democrat Party opposition. It also notes his struggles to control the party and failures yet we have huge pull quotes from a single not very renowned critic. All primary sourced. It's a mess frankly. Violates NPOV and undue weight. Where are the quotes from Quay? Or his memorial service? Is that document even cited? FloridaArmy (talk) 00:44, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
How is a biography by a historian in any way a primary source? Quay is quoted in the final section, and there are short quotes from him elsewhere. I've discussed the memorial service below. Are there other sources you suggest could be used? Wehwalt (talk) 01:43, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is an example of a much better written, more balanced, more revealing, and more interesting description of this politicians wins, losses, influence, and problems. FloridaArmy (talk) 00:59, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And yet the sources cited on that page are those used in this article (Blair and Kehl). Memorial services are primary sources that tend to be hagiographic. It is far better to go with secondary sources where one can. Wehwalt (talk) 01:39, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
How we use sources matters. Have we even included the memorial document where his life accomplishments were catalogued and he was memorialized? One difference with the above cited writeup is that it doesn't rely on extensive pull quotes that just rehash criticism already soelled out at length. FloridaArmy (talk) 01:58, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The memorial service could certainly be included as "Further reading". Wehwalt (talk) 02:03, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Every quote in the historical marker article is already used in this Wikipedia article. Where the historical marker article contains useful information not already in this one is in the discussions of Hoyt and Pattison. I would have no objection to additions summarizing those things. Wehwalt (talk) 02:09, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Family

[edit]

An interesting writeup on his family history here. FloridaArmy (talk) 01:58, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
