Totals not equal 100%
[edit]Can someone explain why the demographics percentages add up to more than 100 percent? How does that make sense? Please? - caseyt3hgreat
- What demographic numbers don't add up. I'll check it out if you give me a specific error. Alansohn 22:36, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- "The racial makeup of the city is 35.43% White, 13.83% African American, 0.78% Native American, 5.51% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 39.36% from other races, and 5.04% from two or more races. 62.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race." 35.43 + 13.83 + .78 + 5.51 + .04 + 39.39 + 5.04 + 62.46 = 162.45%? --Caseyt3hgreat 19:10, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
- The 62.46% for Hispanic/Latino is not added to the other racial groups. It means that 62.46% of the general population is Hispanic/Latino. On the Census, you select one of the other racial groups (White, African American, Asian, etc.) and then there is another check box for Hispanic/Latino. Darkcore 20:09, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
- That's what I had assumed the confusion was when I asked the question. Hispanic / Latino status is independent of race, which explains why the 162.45% in the above calculation is equal to the 62.46% plus the 99.99% of everything else. Alansohn 20:57, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
Bob Rosenthal's books
[edit]Should there be some mention of Bob Rosenthal's books that reference Passaic? http://www.wonderful-passaic.com/moon.htm Pachai 15:36, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
Yes there should! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.82.26.84 (talk) 02:39, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
City Council Members
[edit]I removed the part about the current (or some of them) council members. I don't think it needs to be in here. It would have to be updated every time there is a change. Do most cities have their council members in the article? Besides, the current list was incorrect. Yossiea (talk) 03:54, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Police brutality
[edit]Note that the section of the event on the beating of Afro-American Ronnie Holloway by Joseph R. Rios III was deleted here and instead included at List of cases of police brutality. Xodó (talk) 06:26, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
Residents moved from article
[edit]I removed the following claimed residents of the town from the article. Non-notables (persons without their own articles) should not be listed until they have their own articles and can be linked, unless they are likely to be created red-links and are sourced. Usourced entries should not be added back to the article until a source has been found to justify their inclusion. All of these had either no article, no source, or a citation needed tag at the time they were moved here. Jim Miller See me | Touch me 18:35, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

I understand the sourcing requirements that we have on Wikipedia and I can assure everyone that I do my best to find sources for notable residents and alumni of places and schools in New Jersey, as a glance at my recent edit history will attest. My experience has been that most entries for notables are added to articles for places without sources. Despite the lack of sources provided, appropriate references from reliable and verifiable sources can often readily be found. While it's an approach that's less than perfect, I and other editors, have been able to find appropriate sources for an overwhelming percentage of these unsourced entries over time. While removing the entries is one way to deal with the issue, I have found significant success in being a bit more patient. As an example, I was able to easily find sources for more than half of the names removed here using a search that combined the name of the person in quotes along with the word "Passaic". My approach has been that I will not remove a notable without doing a search myself in Google and Google News / Archive for the person. I acknowledge that this approach is less than perfect, but it does make it far more likely that the result will be a name accompanied by a reliable source than the option of removing the name in its entirety. Alansohn (talk) 21:50, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- First off, thanks for finding all of those that have now been sourced. I would normally do just as you suggest. In this case it was a pretty large number of entries, and moving them to the talk page seemed the easiest way to clear a large number of cn tags without losing the information. It has been a successful strategy on other articles before, and is why I would not just delete the information outright. I had every intention of coming back to start sourcing them, but had to be away from the computer for a while. Jim Miller See me | Touch me 22:06, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
Vulcan statue
[edit]Not sure its important enough to include in the article, but Italian sculptor Giuseppe Moretti completed the full-size plaster positive for Birmingham, Alabama's Vulcan statue at St Stephen's RC Magyar Church in Passaic in the winter of 1903/04 just before the building was completed. The plaster model was removed in sections and transported by rail to Birmingham to make moulds for the final cast iron version. The most complete published account is Raymond J. Rowell, Sr.'s 1972 booklet "Vulcan in Birmingham" published by the Birmingham Park & Recreation Board. --03:48, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

Passaic Park
[edit]The statement "with 25-30 minyanim on Shabbos, and 1,300 families, making it one of the state's fastest-growing Orthodox communities." implies having 25-30 minyanim and 1300 families MAKES Passaic Park one of the state's fastest-growing Orthodox communities. One data point is not a trend. Also ref 35 from 2006 lists 2500 families not 1300. Although I suspect 1300 is closer to correct, there is no source for that.
