[edit]This material has been taken verbatim from http://www.answers.com/topic/rahat-fateh-ali-khan.
I'm not sure if it's originally from somewhere else.
Is it kosher to lift entire chunks like this from somewhere else and stick them on wikipedia? --Sarabseth 20:27, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

Should this page exist?
[edit]Well, obviously, someone without a decent ability to spell spent a lot of time putting together what they could here, so the man is quite inspiring to people, because I don't believe one person with this much effort represents only one person. Not to this degree. What is the closest Wikiproject? Perhaps if someone takes the time to check, one of the other wikis actually has a page that's better (a broad jump in hope, but who knows)? I've been trying to cope with worse on Keisuke Kuwata's page and trust me, translating Japanese is a lot harder!! (Or Arabic!) I'm also one of the primary editors on Derek Trucks's emerging page (and that of The Derek Trucks Band), which is mentioned in the article. Give it a try. Maybe the Islamic Wikiproject here would help-- it's a stretch, but we do cover Sufism, and every branch relating to Islam. --leahtwosaints (talk) 07:37, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Edits by Dalesundstrom on July 18, 2009
[edit]In Response to a notice requesting help at the top of the article, warning that the article did not cite references as required by the Policy for Biographies of living persons, I added two references. I also hid the Table of Contents, which was not helpful on such a short page.
The article now seems to comply with the policy, particularly as it applies to "Well-known public figures." The subject is a very well-known and highly respected musician in South-Asia, and there is nothing inaccurate, controversial, or innapropriate in the article. I would like to remove the "BLP unsourced" notice, and will discuss this and confirm it's OK on the BLP Noticeboard before doing so. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dalesundstrom (talk • contribs) 06:39, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not so sure the page you added is his official Facebook page.
- For one thing, the Biography on the Info page is entirely lifted from a previous version of the Wikipedia article. Funny that he wouldn't be able to put together his own biography.
- Secondly, nothing has been added to the page for 9 months, it seems, other than fan comments.
- It looks very much like a fan site, not his official page. There is not one single contribution on the page that I could see that even purports to come from him. --Sarabseth (talk) 10:17, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
- I did evaluate the Facebook page before referring to it as his official page, and was concerned just as you were that there was no clear communication directly from the artist himself. I considered it official for the following reasons: the pages seem to include photos unavailable elsewhere, and Facebook policy limits administration of such pages to those who are an "authorized representative of the subject of the Page," the policy requires creators to certify that when creating the page, and Facebook removes pages when that policy is violated. I found no reason to question the artist's authorization for the page (but still realize the possibility it may not be authorized). I tried to check the information, and it appears to be accurate. There seems to be some consensus on using the information and no claims of inaccuracy; just some concern about its notability or original source, although it seems to meet the BLP policy for a well-known person. I see you're a huge fan of his legendary uncle, and you're likely know more about all this, and editing, than I do.
- I'll try to find out if that page is really official. In the process of researching another article, I just happen to be corresponding with someone who performed with him last year, who's now the PR rep for Coke Studio (the show they appeared on). I'll mention these concerns and see if it's possible to send a message to encourage him to add some weight to one of these sources. The dire warning at the top of the article may help to do that, so hopefully it can stay just as it is--perhaps for a few weeks or so--and we can continue to discuss it. --Dalesundstrom (talk) 14:39, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
- Maybe the question to ask is: even if this Facebook page is authorized by Rahat, is the Wikipedia article improved in any way by linking to the page? I would argue the answer is: not at all. --Sarabseth (talk) 16:27, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
- I respect your opinions and would like to reach a consensus on the best way to improve the article. Although it doesn’t include a year of birth, the biography I added as a general reference is a reliable source; the website has editorial oversight, and the author has Masters Degrees in Ethnomusicology, and Library and Information Science. The year of birth seems to improve the article by helping to differentiate Rahat from his similarly named and more renowned uncle (which is why I tried to add a reference for it); it also appears to be accurate.
- If the Facebook page is an official site, and the only one for the artist, I would argue that it does improve the article (but those facts aren't certain). Perhaps the best way to improve the article would be to leave the main text as it is now, considering it to document several sources of information on a Well-known public figure as mentioned in BLP policy, and for me to remove the Facebook reference and rely upon the biography I added as a general reference.
- The article had an (Unreferenced |date=July 2008) tag until it was changed to (BLP unsourced|date=July 2008) by Mr.Z-bot on 6 April 2009. I'd like to change that back. I hope you agree that the reference section and biography I added is appropriate. I also hope it's sufficient justification to change the tag to Unreferenced, and will prevent the bot from changing it back again.
- Does that sound like a good approach?--Dalesundstrom (talk) 03:21, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
- It sounds like you're saying the Info page from the Facebook link serves as a reference for his year of birth. However, when the entire content of the Info page was plagiarized from the wikipedia article, we can hardly use it as a reference in support of the wikipedia article.
- Does that sound like a good approach?--Dalesundstrom (talk) 03:21, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
- Also, I would argue that whether linking to the Facebook page improves the article or not depends on its content. Given that the content consists of nothing but:
- a) Material plagiarized from the Wikipedia article
- b) photographs
- c) fan comments
- I don't think the Facebook link adds anything useful to the article.
I hope you agree that the reference section and biography I added is appropriate. I also hope it's sufficient justification to change the tag to Unreferenced, and will prevent the bot from changing it back again.
- Can't comment on whether it is sufficient justification or not, since I don't know enough about the wikipedia policies and standard practices. --Sarabseth (talk) 12:08, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
- No need to belabor your concerns; I proposed removing the reference to address them. I have now removed the Facebook reference (and the Notes section and reflist) that I added earlier.
- The References section and biography link I added remain. The bot seems to add unsourced tags, without modifying the date, or changing them back. I changed the tag back to unreferenced, which now seems more appropriate, and discussed that change on the BLP noticeboard.
- Thanks for helping by explaining the history and your concerns. Hopefully all is well now and folks will continue to add references and improve the article. --Dalesundstrom (talk) 17:57, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
Discography
[edit]I don't think a list of songs he has performed in Hindi films can be called a discography.
The "Sucess in Bollywood" section should probably be rewritten as a paragraph rather than a list (see Wikipedia:Trivia sections). --Sarabseth (talk) 15:05, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
- To 118.103.235.179:
- 1) Please stop making the same edit over and over again
- 2) Take the trouble to read Wikipedia:Trivia sections. Or maybe even just the first sentence. Which reads: Avoid creating lists of miscellaneous information. (Bold in the original.)
- --Sarabseth (talk) 12:42, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
Hi - I feel the Hindi film discography was better when it was listed according to year of release. Serial number - fine - but then one needs to correct the table. I am sorry that I could not do this, I am still learning how to edit. Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Somaditya babu (talk • contribs) 18:42, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
Hi- I think Song Saari Duniya Rabba Nu from Good-Bye Chimpanzee movie in Bollywood Track Section is not available. This song is fake posted. So please remove this information from article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.196.3.42 (talk) 06:03, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
error in Dead Man Walking
[edit]The article states that Rahat contributed to the soundtrack of Dead Man Walking, but I believe it was his uncle (the late great Nusrat of the same name, his uncle) who was on the soundtrack. I don't know where to find on the internet that it clarifies this. But I have heard both recordings and there is no comparison between uncle and nephew. Rahat and Eddie did team up for a concert called "Dead Man Walking - Not in Our Name" in 1998, 3 years after the movie's release and a year after his uncle's death. Pdirt (talk) 09:13, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
- The article says:
In a subordinate role with his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, working in collaboration with Eddie Vedder, of the American rock band, Pearl Jam, Rahat contributed to the soundtrack of the 1995 Hollywood film Dead Man Walking.[1]
- However, Rahat is not credited on the soundtrack (see Dead Man Walking (soundtrack). The only connection I can find is that, well after the movie was released, he played a song from the soundtrack (see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0442819/) at a concert in 1998, after the death of his uncle who had recorded the song for the movie.
- Unless someone can provide some basis for this statement in the article, it should be removed. --Sarabseth (talk) 11:31, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
Revert Page
[edit]Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has not added his uncle's name to his own. I listened to him last night and he was introduced as "Rahat Fateh Ali Khan" only. Please revert back to the page which originally had that name. He was associated with his uncle but that does not mean he took his name Rzafar (talk) 08:33, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- This article has never been moved as far as I can tell, so it would not be a "revert". Please can you supply a reliable source for the name of this person and I will be happy to move it for you. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:21, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- Regardless of how he was introduced at a concert, his albums say Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. See, for example, the picture at this site. --Sarabseth (talk) 13:25, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- Just because it is on one album it does not mean that is his correct name. Here is a recent article (2011) from Express Tribune which gives his name simply as Rahat Fateh Ali Khan - Rahat Fateh Ali rules Bollywood. Here is a track listing for a Bollywood album (on amazon): Love aaj kal another cd track listing: Soulful Sufi and here is the album cover of his compilation of Rahat The very best of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan released in July 2010!! Rzafar (talk) 18:22, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
- Regardless of how he was introduced at a concert, his albums say Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. See, for example, the picture at this site. --Sarabseth (talk) 13:25, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
1) It's not just one album. Every single album I have ever seen has his name as Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
2) The Express Tribune headline says "Rahat Fateh Ali". Does that mean we should also drop the Khan from his name?
3) Rhapsody lists him as "Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan":
4) This is from his biography at allmusic.com : "Rahat took Nusrat's first name in a traditional gesture of admiration of his master". Allmusic is a respected source. They didn't just make that up out of thin air. I think that quotation trumps your assertion that "Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has not added his uncle's name to his own." Some sources may get sloppy and abbreviate his name to Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, but that doesn't change the fact that he took Nusrat's name, and since then that has been his official stage name. --Sarabseth (talk) 00:44, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

"Detention at New Delhi airport" Relevance?
[edit]This news item seems considerably out of place. I found it inappropriate and imbalanced considering the present lack of information on the page of an artist with such extraordinary heritage.
Satya.chai.baba (talk) 02:22, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
- that was my reaction too, but someone pointed out that the detention merited the reaction and involvement of very high government officials [1] and thus is of some international significance. I have however, attempted to condense to a more reasonable length and demote from a full stand alone section. -- The Red Pen of Doom 02:35, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
- I agree on demoting it from it's own section with a bold header. Satya Chai Baba 01:05, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
- If you still have concerns, we could start a formal request for comment from the broader wikipedia community. -- The Red Pen of Doom 02:38, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
- And you could also help address the proportion issue by supplying more sourced content about other parts of his life and impact. -- The Red Pen of Doom 02:41, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
- Agreed, Though unfortunately I don't really have anything much to add here... Satya Chai Baba 01:05, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
- I would like to add my voice here. The incident in question, being international and garnering so much press at the time, probably should be mentioned, but it looks out of place and proportion being under it's own heading. I agree with Red Pen, that the article needs more content on his life to balance it. If there are no objections here I will move the section into one of the existing sections and also look for more citations on other aspects of his life. My 2c: It's a big enough incident that a separate heading doesn't seem disproportionate. If other life events can be added to balance it, so much the better. But I'm uncomfortable playing down an obviously major incident that's embarrassing to him, and that his fans have previously tried to delete. That smacks of bowdlerism and should, I think, be resisted. --Sarabseth (talk) 04:20, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

9 December 1974?
[edit]Hi! Well, there are not many reliable sources, I have found some on facebook to prove his birth date is 9 December:
- 9 December 2014
- 9 December 2015
- 9 December 2016
I remember I added a source, that says his birth year is 1974, but now I think the source is not reliable and should be replaced with this by Coke Studio (Pakistan).
There might still be confusion if year is 1973 or 1974. But I am correcting his birth date on support of this message. If anyone has objection, then please comment. Thanks! M. Billoo 03:05, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
- M.Billoo2000, I found this source in which Rahat claims that he was 9 years old in 1979 mean that he was born in 1970. It can't be false as the subject is claiming himself. I've changed the year of birth from 1974 to 1970. Just wanted to let you know. Thank you. Empire AS Talk! 14:41, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
