Deletion

This article survived a vote for deletion. There was not a strong consensus to delete. See Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Totse for the discussion. Thanks - Taxman Talk 18:39, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)

Whoa

I don't know about you, but my mind is softening around the edges just hearing about this.... --Wetman 11:07, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

There is a temporary site available at (link removed)

Context and Totse-isms

Normally, an explanation is good. But anyways, many people are adding things to the Totse-isms section. Their additions are less likely to be deleted if they add an explanation. "OMGWTFBBQ?" just looks stupid, not to mention that it is not unique to Totse and thus does not belong in the section. --YixilTesiphon

Goatse

I've removed the goatse links for now. It may be tangentially interesting that it's often posted as a trick, but where isn't it? This doesn't really belong here, and just encourages the vandals. The last incarnation before my edit listed it simply as A goat. We don't want to trick our readers in turn. --Saxifrage () [[]] 10:01, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

This makes sense. --YixilTesiphon

Unexplained reverts?

While many of the recent reverts are of obvious vandalism, there are also some reverts of seemingly good-faith edits. The reverts are done without explanation. Please try to give some reason for reversions, and consider whether some discussion would be preferable. --Rholton 14:34, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Page move?

Should this page be moved from Totse to TOTSE? --Rholton 15:02, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC)

If I am getting your logic correctly, the next step would be to move Radar to RADAR :-). Of course, it is an acronym, but brief google look-around tell me that it has become a "normal" word (among those who use it, I mean). --Mikkalai 19:43, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC)
There's no need for you to respond defensively. The first two paragraphs start with the acronym TOTSE, which is why I asked. After that the usage changes to Totse. It seems to me that there should be consistency. If it has become a common word, like radar, then it should be used consistently that way, as it is in the article Radar. You reply indicates that Totse is the proper usage, therefore I will change the article to use Totse consistently. -Rholton 01:14, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)
This makes sense. --YixilTesiphon 03:40, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Totse'isms

People keep pumping various stupidities here, totally unclear outside the totse community. Unless they are explained and their notability proved, they will be mercilessly deleted. This is an encyclopedia, not a slang dumpster. For example, I am going to kill "Fanjeeta", despite being fanny sounding, unless someone writes what the heck this is supposed to mean and proves that it was indeed invented at totse. --Mikkalai 22:22, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The very nature of this article and its subject matter makes it ripe for wierd additions. So yes, ones without an explanation will be destroyed. All your base are belong to us. --YixilTesiphon 01:50, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Are the "coined by" notes really relevant or necessary? It smells like egotism and possibly self-promotion to me.  — Saxifrage |  20:34, Feb 13, 2005 (UTC)
That's exactly what they are, they must be eliminated. --YixilTesiphon 03:52, Feb 14, 2005 (UTC)
I'm beginning to wonder whether the entire section is encyclopedic. As far as I can tell, these phrases lose their meaning outside of Totse -- they have no external currency. What's the point have having them here anyway? --Rholton 4:50, July 28, 2005 (UTC)
They're OR and unverifiable, I've been bold and removed the entire section. --W(t) 05:14, 2005 Jun 8 (UTC)
As amusing as some of them are, I won't miss that section or having to patrol it.  — Saxifrage |  18:43, Jun 8, 2005 (UTC)

The banning of accounts over political differences

It has been asked that I cite my sources when claiming J.C. Stanton banned accounts over political differences. I am that proof. The problem that this entails is two fold: (1) Who the heck are you? and (2) How can you cite the events that occured on a BBS several years ago? The additional problem of this situation is that after my account was banned from Totse, J.C. Stanton wiped the forums cleam of all my old posts. In addition to this, forums are pruned over time, so given the amount of time that has elapsed since those days and now, the old posts would have been deleted anyways.

Your first point (1) applies to you as well. Who the heck are you and why should The World At Large take your claims as truth that belongs in an encyclopedia? The burden of proof is proportionate to the claim, and is on the shoulders of the claimant. I'm not trying to be a pain, I'm just pointing out that you have made a very weak case for a rather significant claim.  — Saxifrage |  04:14, May 25, 2005 (UTC)
I acknowledge that (1) applies to me, however, the broader problem of (2) remains, specifically, how do you advise that I cite the occurences of an online forum when due to the elapse of time, old arguments have automatically been pruned? I can go into higher levels of detail in explaining the story behind the ban, but that will still leave the problems of (1) and (2). If you can provide suggestions, I will happily look into them.
The problem of (1) and (2), taken together, mean that the information is uncitable and inadmissable as a verifiable statement of truth in an encyclopedia. Something like "there have been allegations of..." is true, though.  — Saxifrage |  07:22, May 25, 2005 (UTC)
Heh, anyone else find it ironic that the users of Totse, "home of free-speech," come here to protest the actions of their own admins and moderators? I mean, most vandalism at wiki appears to be politically generated, but with those at Totse, it appears to be out of a desire to air repressed grievances. Then again, I am probably giving the vandals too much credit.

Recent re-write and its subsequent deletion

Who deleted it? That took me time to build. I'm angry. I've been a member of totse since 2004, if you find this stuff ridiculous, I find you ridiculous, basically totse could be seen as a fictional place. It's a place of it's own. Everything I wrote there was current. My father and brothers gang-raped me with large objects as a child, and my orifices are all stretched to goatse like proportions. If you have a beef with it, talk to me on here. Or better yet, become a member and just visit it for a few months to see how things are. There is no neutrality at totse. --Cyberman 4:55, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

People, do me a favor. Shut up. Oh and don't you dare ask me for proof, mainly because the admin's and other staff delete lots of stuff so it can't be tracked. Sometimes they archive things, but they don't like giving out info. They like to keep things deleted often when no one seems to be using them. Getting proof would sometimes be hard. However, I've tried to give some of my info here being a veteran of TotSE. Plus I would believe that some people were banned because of political ideas.. but i'm not goona get into that stuff, and many staff at TOTSE have been suspended for their corrupt actions. Like Wintermute.. har har har. --Cyberman 30 June 2005 23:33 (UTC)
Who are you talking to? --YixilTesiphon 20:27, July 10, 2005 (UTC)
I think he's talking to Cyberman. --Anon.

Protect this page NOW!

There has been an incredible amount of vandalism going on on this page with almost no meaningful changes at all for days now. Why on earth isn't it protected? Let them play with something else.

I agree. The article is worth keeping, but this page needs to be protected.

WOOT TOTSE OWNS YOU

discuss...

+1 --Cyberman 06:28, August 13, 2005 (UTC)
First thought that comes to mind: asserting a statment doesn't make it true. That comes from basic critical thinking. From psychology we know that the tendency to assert statements lacking in proof is associated with a tendency for the asserter to doubt their own assertion.
Second thought is, I laugh in your general direction, silly person trying to 0wn Wikipedia. That's like a bacterium telling the elephant, "I 0wnz j00!" Actually, it's not even like that—sometimes the bacterium can pull its threat off, but I really don't think you're going to resort to asexual reproduction in order to flood the vital systems of this elephant.  — Saxifrage |  18:50, August 12, 2005 (UTC)
Well, I'd like to state that psychology is usually defined and shaped around an empirical science. I believe that, while using empirical methods, I can find a coorelation between TOTSE owning wikipedia to be about +0.9 --Cyberman 03:30, September 7, 2005 (UTC)
It's true. Totse really does own Wikipedia. Take your pseudo-intellectual analogies elsewhere.
Since when does Jeff Hunter own Wikipedia? --AGruntsJaggon 10:15, 22 September 2005 (UTC)

The point of this place is to build an encyclopedia. You're all welcome to start contributing gainfully rather than attempting to engage in dominance games.  — Saxifrage |  04:36, September 8, 2005 (UTC)

Updates

I just added the 'Upgrade' and 'Totseisms' sections. I know its incomplete so please add to it, especially the Totseisms. --AGruntsJaggon 10:56, 22 September 2005 (UTC)

The Totseisms were originally removed as being original research. The Recent Upgrades section is also of questionable value, as it's hardly encyclopedic and highly time-sensitive. Consider: will that section be correct, relevant, or even interesting six years from now?  — Saxifrage |  01:45, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
I'm not entirely sure if this would be considered original research (although I did not know about that poilicy). All of the slang is somewhat documented in the forums and frequently used on totse. Also it is slang, which is not always documented elsewhere but there are pages dedicated to many slang words. I was hoping that other totse members would contribute to the list, but I'm afraid to announce it because many of them are immature.
As for the Recent Upgrades, it is definitely important due to it being a somewhat big upgrade, and the fact that its been using the same stuff for years, I believe since before 2000, possibly since 1998. Of course there were tweaks to it, but it's been using the same basic software and hardware. It was long overdue for an update, so its pretty big news. Although in the future it probably could be included in the general discription. --AGruntsJaggon 10:06, 23 September 2005 (UTC)

Removal of Free Speech paragraph

This paragraph was just deleted:

"Totse has a strong commitment to free speech, as can be seen in the diversity and occasionally unsavory nature of its articles, the fact that BBS members can post essentially anything as long as they do not become "trolls", and most especially that the first paragraph seen upon opening the Totse main page is the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. There are some exceptions to the free speech rule: Goatse, Lemonparty, Outwar (a game where points are earned for number of times a link has been clicked), and for a short time, the word "nigger," were banned due to spamming."

The reason given was it applys to other forums as well. But I think it should stay because although other forums may block certain words, many of them do not say they are a place of totally free speech. This paragraph accuratly describes totse free speech policy. Many totsers that read it thought that was a very important paragraph.

So I think it should be re-instated. --AGruntsJaggon 01:39, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

Well I've given it about a week with no reply so I'm gonna add it back in. Feel free to delete it and come here to discuss the paragraph. --AGruntsJaggon 04:34, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

Hey!

Hey! some one deleted my update I made to the totse page. Please stand up if you did it! I think people need to know about the mass atack the spamer did to Sg.

I didnt remove it, but I dont think spam attacks are very important to the history of totse. Be sure to leave your name in the future. You do that by adding four '~' after your message. --AGruntsJaggon 18:10, 24 September 2005 (UTC)

Does anyone other than totse members ever look at this page?

First off, someone needs to learn how to use the discussion page to ask questions like this. But I think it's a valid question. I'm a totse member so I wouldnt know. Anyone else look at this page? --AGruntsJaggon 10:41, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

Well, I'm not a totse member, but I used to spend a lot of time reading the text files, so I suppose I count. --Maru (talk) 04:57, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

Possible TOTSE customs section

Anyone think a section on TOTE customs, such as giving out your password in Half Baked when you quit TOTSE, +1'ing posts, quoting posts without commenting on them, etc. should be/could be added? --HallofMirrors 07:29, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Maybe you can find a way of incorporating them into Totseisms? Also describe their meaning not just that people do it. +1 is already there so you can just add to it. Dont forget these things are mostly done by SG/HB users, not the other forums. --AGruntsJaggon 22:44, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
Okay. I also made a Jeff Hunter page, I tried my best but there really isn't that much out there about him. At least, not that I know of. HallofMirrors 22:54, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

Requesting attention

I'm requesting attention for this article, because I think that the article is overcrowded with fancruft and forumcruft. Although Totse does deserve an entry, I think that this article fails its point.. by so much superfluous information, viewers won't be able to see the wood for the trees. I already tried deleting some non-notable parts, however they were just added back in..maybe someone with more prestige should look at this? --SoothingR 13:14, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

I think the actual forum-goers know what's best for the article. --HallofMirrors 02:04, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
Why and how? Anyone who visits forums knows that much of the stuff in that article does apply to 98% of all message boards on the WWW. --SoothingR 14:32, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
Then say so. For example if theres a totseism that is found elsewhere, write that its not exclusive to totse. --AGruntsJaggon 05:14, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
To be honest, it's a good idea but IMHO it's better to remove the entire section altogether. There's no use to reiterate some phrases that are already covered in List of Internet slang, and nobody's interested in some random phrases that only occur at Totse. It's considered forum-cruft. I also removed the free-speech paragraph again, since it really isn't a rarity among forums to entirely allow all forms of free speech. Overall, I think the article looks way better now. Without a massive load of forumcruft and to the point. --SoothingR 15:17, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
Not sure what forum-cruft is, but the totseism section would be very helpful to new users trying to get into the totse community. Also the free speech thing is a bit more important to the totse forum since they are all about free speech. The 1st amendment is at the top of the home page and it is important to note the few exceptions. The old article did not give an opinion on it which is why I thought it was good. It can do without the totseisms section although it is an interesting read, but the free speech part should be included. --AGruntsJaggon 08:24, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
The totseisms-part was exactly what made the article look like forumcruft (an unnecessarily high number details about forums). Wikipedia is not a guide for new users at Totse, or a medium to attract new totse-users. It's an encyclopedia. And I still don't see how the free speech-bit contributes to the article; I can list so many forums that have free speech. -- SoothingR 08:50, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
Do they claim to be a haven for free speech yet censor a few words? Also the totseisms was kinda like a documentation but I guess thats not what wikipedia is. --AGruntsJaggon 01:21, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
They have no censorship. -- SoothingR 06:21, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
What sites are these? Now you have me interested. --AGruntsJaggon 08:41, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

Page got screwed up

There was no need to strip the article of most of its content because of a few vandals. I'm going to revert and keep reverting, if necessary. --HallofMirrors 03:11, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

Protection

I just protected this due to the extreme vandalism... I'll unprotect in an hour. If that doesn't stop it, it'll be a day next time. --Greg Asche (talk) 22:05, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

Okay, unprotected. --Greg Asche (talk) 23:08, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
It's been protected again by Tony Sidaway. --Maru (talk) Contribs 08:11, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

Shutdown?

Jesus, Jeff actually pulled the plug?

Well that was unexpected, where/how did you hear about that? Comradeash 04:18, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

I hope this is a joke or a hoax; There's not much information availible on it. If totse is actually shut down, the best part of the internet is gone. --Staples
Yes. he sent an e-mail out to the moderators to confirm this. I also noticed interstingly, that the domain was created on the 17th of December 1997, exaclty 8 years earlier, to the day. --SirRoss 19:08, 18 December 2005
I call BS, having earlier talked to a moderator whom recieved no such notice. I have also just talked to a company who leases ad space on totse; they have said that no moderators have been contacted and it is (most likely) down for maintenance. If Jeff had done that I'd drive across the country to bitch-slap him ;). Looking forward to seeing it up again. --Staples
OK sorry for any confusion on the matter, still interesting about the date it went down though. --SirRoss 22:27, 18 December 2005
According to Metaphysicist, and i quote, "The BIOS on the sever crashed, taking te server with it....They need to get new hardware" --Weebl 22:17, Dec 18 2005

Wow That's great I almost cried when I first heard that it was down for good.. Long live Totse!!

I call bullshit. Why would totse go down without warning?

Yep, I think Totse's gone, it's sad, but I think it's the truth.

OMFG, just a thought, do you think it could be down due to revamping Totse (ie, changing the forum software).

HAH!! TOTSE WILL NEVER DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

I was expecting a shutdown :(. Damnit.
"The motherboard on the main server for totse.com fried and died. The server is about 5 years old and we will probably end up replacing the entire server with something that can handle the current traffic load a little better. We have day-old backups of the entire system so we should be able to make a full recovery as soon as new hardware is in place. Please be patient, we are working to get this fixed as quickly as possible."
That is great I almost cried when i first heard it was down for good.. long live Totse!!
Am I the only motherfucker who hoped for a perminant shutdown?
Probably, yes. Most people don't hold grudges against a repository of text files. --Maru (talk) Contribs 17:07, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

It's nothing to do with the textfiles, I just think 99% of the users are complete idiots.

I think many users are 14-year-old 'anarchists' who don't deserve anything but a bullet to the head.. They register at the site for all the wrong reasons and contribute nothing but ignorance and stupidity. There was a topic a while back that read 'I think users should have to take an IQ test to register on totse'. Frankly, I think a policy like this would make totse better for those of us who are actually intelligent human beings with half-decent grammar. --Staples
That would require Jeff to actually give a shit about what happens on his board. He never has, and he never will. That's why TOTSE went to shit back when it was a dial-up board -- Jeff just didn't give a damn what happened on his board. It was just a place for him to hang out 'whenever', and he expected it to magically run itself. That only worked when there was a community of users who wanted to be there, and who were capable of shouting down idiots when they showed up. Once TOTSE got 4 nodes, then 8, and then NirvanaNet moved beyond the SF Bay Area and became a nation-wide network, the number of clueless fucks multiplied out of control. The signal-to-noise ratio became unacceptable, and the good folk left, which made the SNR worse, accelerating their departure. The classic flood/flamewar by Greenspam in its last few weeks exemplify everything that's wrong with that attitude. Ultimately, TOTSE will probably collapse again after Jeff realizes it will never be 'cool', most people have never heard of it (or him), it's not making any appreciable amount of money, and it's more trouble than it's worth. Until then, enjoy the downward spiral.-- Digital Avatar 05:28, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
Interesting...
Come now, its always fun to pwn the n00bs, although the cyclic thread titles in spurious is fucking annoying...remember that thread in S&A where the guy blew nasty diahorrea on his girlfriend? Comradeash 09:58, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
If Jeff didn't 'give a shit', why has he continually operated TOTSE for over 15 years? It takes effort and money, son. Thanks for the brief history of TOTSE's operation, but that doesn't really do anything but take up space. You can read all that in the FAQ section of TOTSE. It isn't that hard to add a little coding onto the registration process. I'm not limiting suggestions of how to lower idiocy to an IQ test on the registration form. There are dozens if not hundreds of ways to manage this. A big problem is that, wherever you go on the web, there will be noobs. I dare you to defy me. I also find it odd that you take such a strong offensive to TOTSE. Albeit you seem to be an intelligent person (Judging by your language skills) you seem to display characteristics similar to those of a sociopath or an individual suffering from aspergers syndrome. This or you hold something against an internet forum. Were you banned from TOTSE or made fun of and are distraught? You don't like the ideals TOTSE stands for? If so, get over it. A pessimist like you should be used to being low. Get used to the world stepping over you :). Take it easy, -TNS
Comeradeash, Yes I do, a classic.. Remember 'Need help with shit covered ass'? --Staples
