Tomás Fernández de Medrano: This historiographical discovery is of considerable proportions on a Riojan scale. Medrano, an entire secretary to the Duke and Duchess of Savoy, originally from the La Rioja region, married to a relative of the Duke of Lerma, completely forgotten. But is it possible to know any other information about his life? Who was he? What was his career? What did he do? Why did he attain this privileged political position? Thanks to the Government of La Rioja, we obtained those answers.
There are a series of letters of recommendation written to intercede for Don Tomás Fernandez de Medrano. Through them, we can approach the details of his life with some detail. Thus, we know that the most important position he held was that of Secretary of State and War for the Dukes of Savoy. In 2015, The Government of La Rioja, the Institute of Rioja Studies at the University of La Rioja in collaboration with The Berceo magazine, edited by the Riojan Studies Institute, published a scientific study of Tomas Fernandez de Medrano, a scientific study in the areas of Social Sciences, Philology, History, and Regional Heritage, with the aim of providing relevant knowledge for research and cultural development in La Rioja. This work is intended for the scientific community, as well as other individuals interested in these subjects, from regional, national, and international fields.
