Name meaning
[edit]As far as I can see, there is no explanation of the origin of the name "Viborg". Most articles about locations give mention to how the name came to be or what it means. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.67.78.248 (talk) 19:13, 8 February 2009 (UTC) Someone has now edited to claim that the the origin of the second syllable, borg, is from "berg" meaning mountain. I propose that it is more likely to be from "borg", fortification. In addition to the identical spelling, the explanation is more plausible becaue Viborg was originally a fortification, whereas there is not a mountain there. - In the Danish article old names are provided. The first syllable was previously "Wi" which means holy (place) and the second syllable has previously been bjerg/biærgh/bærgh/burgh and in latin "Wibergis" - all synonyms for being situated high in the terrain, and indeed the old town was located up on a hill. So "holy place on a hill". There is a source here in Danish: http://www.middelalderinfo.dk/bynavne.php .--Slaunger (talk) 21:40, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

– per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. There doesn't even seem to be another entity called simply "Viborg" except a "city" in the U.S. of 814 souls (and this is reflected in Danish Wikipedia). The other entries on the DAB page are partial title matches. — AjaxSmack 02:04, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose since Viborg, Denmark is much more recognizable as a city name. Dicklyon (talk) 05:21, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- If the Danish city were the primary topic, then it would have to be at the primary title (WP:PLACEDAB). – Uanfala (talk) 09:49, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose. Sure, something like "Viborg County" looks like a partial title match, but administrative units like this are sometimes referred to using the short name. However, there are other entries on the dab that can't similarly be mistaken for partial titles, like Vyborg (where "Viborg" is an alternative spelling). Among the listed articles, there's no primary topic with respect to usage: see the Wikinav data: the Danish city gets only about a third of the onward clicks from the dab, and it's not even the article with the highest number. – Uanfala (talk) 09:49, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose. Vyborg, which often uses this spelling, is also pretty notable. -- Necrothesp (talk) 09:55, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
