Rating

[edit]

I rated it as a start, and added Sydney Packet as an Australian-built whaler. The wooden sailin ship era is fairly important to Australia, in my opinion. Pustelnik (talk) 14:28, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The beginnings

[edit]

I started the article, but lost gustso, got a bit bored and didn't do a thorough job.

I've left these ideas commented in the article, I'll list them here. We need:

  • to add 1900s info, especially post WWII
  • info about whale protection groups in the 70s
  • to discuss International Whaling Commission
  • to comment on post 1978 whaling stance, anti-Japanese whaling etc--Commander Keane 21:27, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal

[edit]
  • Strongly oppose merger. There is plenty to say about Whaling in Western Australia; it was a key early industry and an important historical thread in WA. It merits an article. It is not the WA article's fault that the Australia article is a bit stubby. Hesperian 22:54, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strongly oppose merger per above. There's no reason to do so other than to conveniently fit into the infobox structure, and that's a bad reason. —Moondyne 00:10, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: I only put up the merger as it seemed that the Whaling in Australia article was very short, and mentioned WA a few times. WA whaling definitely seems to be more important, but could fit well in the other article. Do you think that the Whaling in Australia article could be expanded much more without overlapping much on WA whaling? Chris_huhtalk 08:53, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Absoulutely yes. There's much more to say about southern ocean whaling and early Botany Bay pelagic expeditions. I understood there was some early whaling in South Australia also. —Moondyne 23:51, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, i will remove the merger. I suppose that when most of this whaling happened there wasn't an 'Australia' in a way, it was more WA, SA, etc anyway. Chris_huhtalk 09:51, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

interesitng new content

[edit]

Folks might be interested in this: http://www.dictionaryofsydney.org/entry/sydneys_whaling_fleet A newly published article in the Dictionary of Sydney about the history of Whaling in Sydney. It's citable in its own right and also refers to a bunch of primary and secondary source content. FYI :-) I'll get around to doing some of this too at some point maybe later this week. Major edit

[edit]

I have started a planned major edit of this page, drawing on recent research on the subject. This is not to diminish those who established and contributed to the page previously with material that was relevant, accurate and well cited. Histragic (talk) 04:54, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
