no excuse not to follow international standard

The international standard symbol for pound-force is lbf. The only authorities that could trump an international standard are either another international standard or WP:MOSNUM. ISO 80000-4 Annex B also lists lbf (alongside lb for mass) among other deprecated units, which do not include poundal and slug. However, the variants with subscripts, which are the only ones that make sense to put in a template, still have their use cases where they are used together, i.e. where lb is used for neither or both of them. — Christoph Päper 19:00, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

Yes, but that's because the SI units of force and mass are the newton and kilogram. The pound-force (lbf) and pound (lb) have no value if the SI unit is being used. If the template only has a use with a subscript, and the subscript is non-standard, why not just delete the template? In other words, under what circumstances is it better to use lb_F than lbf?
