Daboo Malik (born 21 January 1963 [1]),born Anwar Sardaar Malik, is an Indian music director , composer, singer, actor, and scriptwriter in the Hindi film industry.


Early Life

Daboo Malik, was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra to the veteran music director Sardar Malek (a famous music director in the 1900s[2]). He has two brothers Anu Malik and Abu Malik. Daboo Malik comes from a musical family, his brother Anu Malik (a famous music director of Bollywood movies As of March 2014) [3], and uncle Hasrat Jaipuri was a famous lyrcist in the 1900s[4]. Daboo Malik completed his Bachelors of Commerce at Narsee Monjee College[5], in Mumbai. Thus, he decided to follow his family’s legacy. Daboo Malik pursued various artistic roles, such as singing, acting, and assisting his brother, Anu Malik with directing music.


Music and Film Career

Daboo Malik was initially not interested in singing or composing music. He was more interested in acting. In 1986[6], Daboo Malik pursued a small role in a small screen movie, called “Mahabharat” by B.R. Chopra, and other movies such as, Beta ho toh aisa, Tirangaa, and Baazigar[7]. But, in 2013, Malik realized this in an interview: “I was acting and unconsciously working on my inner talent of composing music. I realized I wasted a lot of time. I only wanted to pursue acting for stardom[8].”

Daboo Malik released his first album,Yeh Zindagi ka Safar in 2001[9], and this was his first release as a solo music director[10]. Also, in the year 2002, the song Thoda Sa Pyaar Hua Hai from the movie Maine Dil Tujhko Diya was his first composition for a Bollywood movie[11]. As he received recognition, in 2002, he started to compose music for more Bollywood movies such as Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge and Sharukh Khan’s super hit movie, Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam[12]. In 2004, he composed music for Sohail Khan’s movie, called I Proud to Be an Indian[13]. And, in 2009, Daboo composed music for the movie Kisaan[14].

Daboo Malik gives attribution to his discovery of his musical talent as a music director, to Salim Khan (Salman Khan’s father)[15]. In the year 2013, during an interview, Daboo Malik, described the unforgettable event, “My meeting with Salim Khan is unforgettable. He found me similar to my dad’s personality, and I sang for the first time in front of him. Salim told me right away that I’m born to become a composer. I get goosebumps even when I think about it now, as my conversation with Salim Khan, changed everything, and my musical journey began[16]."

In the year 2014, Daboo Malik made an addition to his skills of composing music and become a scriptwriter for a forthcoming musical thriller “W[17].” directed by Tarun Madan. Along with writing the script, he composed the music for the musical thriller called “W[18].”

Personal Life

Daboo Malik is married to Jyoti[19]. They have two sons, Armaan Malik, and Amal Malik. Both the sons actively participate in the Bollywood industry by singing and composing music As of March 2014[20].
