This article comprises a list of characters that play a role in Saint Seiya (also known as Knights of the Zodiac) and its canonical continuation, Saint Seiya: Next Dimension, two manga series created, written and illustrated by Masami Kurumada.

The plot of Saint Seiya begins in 1990 (date retconned from 1986 by the author at the beginning of Next Dimension) and follows a group of five mystical warriors called Saints as they battle in the name of the goddess Athena against agents of evil who seek to rule the Earth. Their main enemy in the first arc of the story is the traitorous Gold Saint of Gemini, who has murdered the representative of Athena and taken his place as leader of the Saints. In the second arc, the Saints are confronted with the God of the Sea Poseidon, who kidnaps the mortal reincarnation of Athena and threatens to flood the world with incessant rain to cleanse it of the evils of mankind. Their final enemy, who appears in the third arc of the series, is the God of the Underworld, Hades, whom Athena has fought since the age of myth.

Saint Seiya: Next Dimension acts both as a prequel and a sequel to the first series. It details the aftermath of the war against Hades and starts with Athena seeking help from the gods of Olympus and from Chronos to save Pegasus Seiya by traveling back to the 18th century. The two main antagonistic forces are the troops of the goddess Artemis, in the 20th century storyline, and the incarnation of Hades in the 18th century.

Creation and conception

While in the process of creating Saint Seiya, Masami Kurumada initially gave Seiya the name Rin, intending to title his manga "Ginga no Rin" (Rin of the Galaxy). However, as he continued developing the story, he changed the name to Seiya, which he felt was more fitting. First he spelled the name with the Japanese characters that mean "holy arrow", to relate it to Seiya's condition as a Saint, but later decided to spell it as "star arrow", to emphasize the constellation and mythological motif. Finally, he changed the title of the manga to Saint Seiya, once the concept of the Saints was fully developed. Kurumada stated that one of the first ideas he had for Saint Seiya was the "Pegasus Meteor Fist". Since his manga was going to use the constellations as a very important and ever-present theme, he wanted his protagonist to have a special move that would be like a shower of meteors.

Seiya's likeness was inspired by that of Takane Ryūji, the main character of Kurumada's hit manga Ring ni Kakero created nine years before Saint Seiya and which he considers to be his favorite creation. Most protagonists in his works bear a resemblance to Ryūji because Kurumada subscribes to Osamu Tezuka's Star System (maintaining a stable cast of characters who play a different or similar role in the author's various works, sometimes with the same personality, sometimes with a different one). The same process was used to create almost all the other characters in the series, as in all of Kurumada's works.

Kurumada once stated that, at first, Athena was not going to exist as a character. She was rather going to be experienced individually by each of the protagonists in different spiritual ways. Later, he thought this concept would be confusing to readers and difficult to use, so he decided to integrate her into his manga as a character, with her own traits and personality.

The Sagittarius Gold Cloth was chosen as the most famous of the Gold Cloths because of its symbolism in relation to the main character. The Japanese meaning of Seiya's name, "star arrow", is also a metaphor for "meteor" and Sagittarius represents an archer, so Kurumada thought it would be a perfect match for Seiya, especially since he already had in mind that Seiya would eventually wear the Sagittarius Gold Cloth in certain parts. Hence, Seiya's zodiacal sign is Sagittarius.

Protagonists

Pegasus Seiya

Pegasus Seiya (天馬星座（ぺガサス）の星矢, Pegasasu no Seiya) is the Bronze Saint of Pegasus in the 20th century and titular character of the series. An orphaned child later revealed to be one of Mitsumasa Kido's sons, he was separated from his sister Seika and sent to Greece to become a Saint, a soldier of the goddess Athena. Initially motivated by the desire to rejoin his sister, he eventually discovers he has protected Athena for millennia, his soul returning every time she reincarnates to assist her in the battles against the evil agents that threaten the Earth. As a warrior of immense might, Seiya achieves victory in impossible battles, occasionally donning the Sagittarius Gold Cloth before particularly challenging opponents. He defeats the gods Poseidon and Hades, although the latter curses him at the end of Saint Seiya to stop his cycle of rebirth. He is left in a comatose state which Athena seeks to revert in Next Dimension. He is voiced by Tōru Furuya and Hiroko Emori, who plays him in scenes where he appears as a child. In the Hades chapter OVAs, Masakazu Morita took the role as his voice actor. In the English adaptations, Seiya was voiced by Illich Guardiola and Cameron Bautsch.

Dragon Shiryū

Dragon Shiryū (龍星座（ドラゴン）の紫龍, Doragon no Shiryū) is the Bronze Saint protected by the Dragon constellation, considered the calmest and most collected of the protagonists. As one of Mitsumada Kido's sons, he was sent at an early age to the Five Old Peaks of Rozan to train under the Libra Gold Saint and acquire the Dragon Cloth. This Cloth is known for possessing the strongest fist and shield. After he returns to Japan, Shiryū becomes involved in the battles to recover the Gold Cloth from Ikki and the Black Saints, and eventually discovers that Saori Kido is the goddess Athena whom he swore to protect. In the ensuing battle against the Silver Saint Perseus Algol, Shiryū is forced to blind himself to achieve victory. He recovers his sight upon awakening his seventh sense during the fight against Cancer Deathmask, but later loses it a second time while facing Poseidon's General Chrysaor Krishna. More than once, he dons the Libra Gold Cloth when confronting a particularly powerful opponent. In Japanese media, Shiryū was voiced by Hirotaka Suzuoki (in the anime), Chiyoko Kawashima (anime, as young Shiryū) and Takahiro Sakurai (Hades chapter OVAs). In the English version of the animated series, he was voiced by Jay Hickman.

Cygnus Hyōga

Cygnus Hyōga (白鳥星座（キグナス）の氷河, Kigunasu no Hyōga), also known as Swan Hyōga in several international adaptations, is the Bronze Saint of Cygnus. He was born in the fictional village of Kohoutek, in eastern Siberia, which, at the time when Kurumada wrote and drew his manga, was in the Soviet Union. His mastery over his Cosmo grants him the ability to create ice and snow at temperatures as low as absolute zero by stopping subatomic particles. Hyōga is often portrayed wearing a cross and rosary of the Northern Cross, another name for the Cygnus constellation. Calm by nature, he displays a seemingly emotionless exterior, but a more tender side of his character emerges on occasion, such as when he expresses his gratitude to Andromeda Shun for having saved his life and his undying devotion to his mentor Aquarius Camus. He first appears in the series as he receives an order from Sanctuary to eliminate his fellow Bronze Saints, but he quickly abandons this mission when he discovers the truth about Saori Kido's identity and joins her in the battles against her enemies. While in Poseidon's Undersea Temple, he reencounters Kraken Isaac, a fellow apprentice of Camus. To repay an old debt to the Mariner, Hyōga sacrifices one of his eyes. He occasionally dons the Aquarius Gold Cloth. In the anime adaptation, he was given a different master: an original character referred to as the Crystal Saint, who was in turn Aquarius Camus's apprentice. He was voiced by Kōichi Hashimoto and Yumi Tōma (as young Hyōga) in the anime adaptation, and by Hiroaki Miura in the Hades chapter OVAs. In the English version of the series, he was voiced by Jason Douglas.

Andromeda Shun

Andromeda Shun (アンドロメダ星座（アンドロメダ）の瞬, Andoromeda no Shun) is the Bronze Saint of Andromeda and Phoenix Ikki's younger brother, although he shares the same father as the rest of the main Bronze Saints. He trained at Andromeda Island under the Silver Saint Cepheus Daidalos and returned to Japan after earning his Cloth, hoping to be reunited with Ikki. He helps Athena reclaim Sanctuary and later becomes involved in the battles against Poseidon and his Generals. In the final arc, it is revealed that the necklace he has carried since he was a baby was given to him by Pandora, to mark his body as Hades's future container. Ikki manages to free him after the god takes hold of his body and both follow Athena to Elysion, where Shun briefly dons the Virgo Gold Cloth and helps to finally defeat Hades. In Next Dimension, Shun accompanies Athena to the 18th century, to save Seiya from the curse of Hades's sword. There, he joins forces with the former Pegasus Saint, Tenma, to save the helpless goddess from Hades's Specters. In the anime adaptation, his master's name was changed to Albiore. He was voiced by Ryo Horikawa and Yumi Tōma (as young Shun) in the TV series adaptation of the manga and the "Hades: Chapter Sanctuary" OVAs. In the later Hades chapter OVAs, his original voice actor was replaced by Yūta Kasuya. In English media, he was voiced by Chris Patton and Kira Vincent Davis (as young Shun).

Phoenix Ikki

Techniques: Ascension of the Phoenix Wings, Phoenix Illusion Demonic Fist

Phoenix Ikki (鳳凰星座（フェニクス）の一輝, Fenikkusu no Ikki) is the Bronze Saint of the Phoenix constellation and Shun's older brother. He trained at the hellish Death Queen Island under Guilty, which turned him into a loner, cold and harsh. Ikki first appears as an antagonist, as the leader of the Black Saints who is set on taking the Sagittarius Gold Cloth for himself and destroying the other Bronze Saints for revenge against the Graude Foundation. He later overcomes his hate and becomes an ally to Athena and the Bronze Saints, often arriving at critical moments to save them from certain death. Born under the sign of Leo, Ikki dons the Leo Gold Cloth once, during the fight against the twin gods Hypnos and Thanatos in Elysion. In Next Dimension, he helps Athena and Shun escape from Artemis's Satellites and Lascoumoune, then follows them to the 18th century. Ikki was voiced by Hideyuki Hori and Noriko Uemura (as young Ikki) in the TV series. In the later OVAs of the adaptation of the Hades arc, Katsuyuki Konishi and Machiko Toyoshima (as young Ikki) replaced his original voice actors. In the English version, he was voiced by Mike MacRae and K.C. Jones (as young Ikki).

Saori Kido

Saori Kido (城戸 紗織, Kido Saori), also known as Princess Sienna in the English version of the series, is the reincarnation of the Goddess of War Athena (女神（アテナ）, Atena). Based on the Greek goddess of the same name, she is the daughter of Zeus and sister of Artemis and Apollo. She usually carries a golden staff representing Nike, the Goddess of Victory, and a shield which can eliminate all evil and owns a powerful Divine Cloth. She is reborn approximately every 250 years to protect the Earth from evil with the help of her loyal Saints. While still a baby, Gemini Saga attempts to kill her, but Sagittarius Aiolos saves her life and delivers her to Mitsumasa Kido, who raises her in secret in Japan. Thirteen years later, after Mitsumasa's death, Saori gathers the Bronze Saints that the Graude Foundation trained and battles to reclaim Sanctuary from Saga's control. During the Poseidon arc, she offers to be locked inside the main pillar in Poseidon's Undersea Temple while it fills with water that would have otherwise flooded the Earth. After her Saints save her, she reseals Poseidon's soul. In the Hades arc, she infiltrates the Underworld and follows Hades to Elysion, where she also seals away the evil god. In Next Dimension, hoping to save Seiya's life from the curse cast on him by Hades's sword, Saori travels to Olympus to ask for Chronos's help. The God of Time sends her back to the 18th century war against Hades, as per her request, but she appears in the past as a helpless baby at the mercy of her enemies. In Japanese media, she was voiced by Keiko Han and later by Fumiko Orikasa in the Hades chapter OVAs. In the English version of the series, she was voiced by Allison Sumrall.

Pegasus Tenma

Techniques: Pegasus Meteor Fist

Trained to be the Pegasus Saint by Crateris Suikyō, Pegasus Tenma (天馬星座（ペガサス）の天馬, Pegasasu no Tenma) is Seiya's incarnation in the 18th century and Alone's best friend. After he and Alone escape from Libra Dohko and Aries Shion, Tenma realizes that his friend has become Hades. He vows to protect Alone, but, when he tries to make him remember who he is, Pandora and some Skeleton soldiers intervene and Tenma has to be saved by Dohko and Shion. The trio is then beset by Griffon Vermeer and Suikyō, who reveals himself as the Garuda Specter. The Saints manage to escape after Pandora summons the Specters and drink water from the Crateris Cloth to revitalize themselves. There, Tenma sees his future: Seiya in a wheelchair. Returning to Sanctuary with Dohko and Shion, Tenma later encounters Andromeda Shun and the two begin to climb the Twelve Temples, joining forces to protect the infant time-traveling Athena.

An alternate version of Tenma makes an appearance in the spin-off manga Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas, where his name is spelled only in katakana.

Major groups

Black Saints

Techniques: Black Meteor Fist (also known as Black Death Fist) (Black Pegasus), Black Fang Nebula (Black Andromeda), Black Blizzard (Black Swan)

The Black Saints (暗黒聖闘士, Burakku Seinto) – also known as Ankoku Saints in the anime adaptation, ankoku being Japanese for black – are servants of Phoenix Ikki on his quest to kill all the Bronze Saints. They all trained on Death Queen Island and are former Saints who were stripped from their title and Cloth for using their strength for personal gain, turning to a life of crime and violence. Although there is a Black Saint for each of the eighty-eight constellations, Kurumada prominently featured only four, the dark counterparts of the protagonists: Black Pegasus (暗黒ペガサス, Burakku Pegasasu), Black Andromeda (暗黒アンドロメダ, Burakku Andoromeda), Black Dragon (暗黒ドラゴン, Burakku Doragon) and Black Swan (暗黒スワン, Burakku Suwan). They were regarded as the most powerful among the Black Saints and were collectively known as The Black Four (暗黒四天王, Burakku Fō). Their Cloths and techniques are dark opposites to the ones Seiya, Shiryū, Shun and Hyōga use. Although there is only one counterpart for each Cloth, in the manga, the Black Dragon Saint has a blind brother who also wears a Black Dragon Cloth and helps him in battle. There are also several Black Phoenix Saints who refer to themselves as Ikki's shadows, although in the anime one of them appears as the strongest one. The Black Four are defeated by their equivalents and, in the manga, they are later killed by the Silver Saints, who meant to kill the Bronze Saints, but mistook them due to an illusion created by Aries Mu. The Black Four were also present in the printed side-story "Nebula Chain – The bond of brothers" inspired by the anime, in which they were given names: Black Pegasus was Kenuma (ケヌマ, Kenuma); Black Swan, Jido (ジド, Jido); Black Dragon was Shinadekuro (シナデクロ, Shinadekuro) and Black Phoenix was Ritahoa (リタホア, Ritahoa). Black Andromeda was left unnamed.

Athena's army is composed of warriors known as Saints, who for millennia have battled to protect the goddess and the ideals she stands for. They inhabit the Sanctuary and possess superhuman powers thanks to their Cosmo, the energy of the Big Bang that dwells inside every being. They are divided into three hierarchical ranks – Bronze, Silver and Gold – and wear armors that are linked to the constellations named Cloths. Although all Saints have sworn allegiance to the goddess, Kurumada first presented most of them in an antagonistic role. They were deceived by the dark personality of the Gemini Gold Saint Saga, who killed and impersonated the representative of the goddess – the old Pope, Aries Shion – and sought to take control of the Earth for himself. Those who were able to recognize the evil that had taken over Sanctuary and sided with Athena from the beginning were mostly the lowest-ranking Saints in her army.

Bronze Saints

The Bronze Saints (青銅聖闘士, Buronzu Seinto)'s mastery over Cosmo is at a basic level, but they can still wield superhuman strength and achieve a maximum speed of mach 1. Aside from the five protagonist Bronze Saints, Kurumada presented six others in his work.

Unicorn Jabu

Yunikōn no Jabu (一角獣星座の邪武)

Techniques: Unicorn Gallop

As one of the one hundred children recruited by Mitsumasa Kido, he is sent to Algeria to gain the Unicorn Bronze Cloth and later returns to Japan to compete in the Galaxian Wars for the Gold Cloth of Sagittarius. He defeats Lionet Ban in his first match but is outmatched against Andromeda Shun's chains. Afterwards, he returns to Algeria to further his training. When Saori is hit by Sagitta Ptolemy's golden arrow, Jabu comes to protect her from the then antagonistic soldiers of Sanctuary. He remains there after it is retaken and later protects it from the Saints that Hades revived. He also protects Seiya's sister Seika from the attacks of Thanatos. He was voiced by Kōsuke Meguro and Akie Yasuda (as young Jabu) in the anime adaptation and by Hideo Ishikawa in the OVA series of the Hades arc. Vic Mignogna and Sasha Paysinger (as young Jabu) voiced him in English media.

Hydra Ichi

Hidora no Ichi (海ヘビ星座の市)

Techniques: Mellow Poison

One of Mitsumasa Kido's sons. He trains in Finland to become the Hydra Bronze Saint and later returns to participate in the Galaxian Wars held by Mitsumasa's adopted granddaughter Saori Kido. In his first match, Ichi battles Cygnus Hyōga. Underestimating his opponent, he is frozen to near death. Ashamed by his defeat, he leaves for Finland to undergo further training with his master. Ichi does not reappear until Saori is struck by Ptolemy's golden arrow in Sanctuary. From then on, Ichi serves her as Athena and comes to reside in Sanctuary. In the Hades arc, he protects Sanctuary from the revived Saints, and Pegasus Seiya's sister from Thanatos. He was voiced by Masato Hirano and John Swasey in the Japanese and English anime adaptations, and by Masaya Onosaka in the Hades chapter OVAs.

Wolf Nachi

Urufu no Nachi (狼星座の那智)

Techniques: Dead Howling

The Bronze Saint of Wolf. Nachi is one of the one hundred orphans that were gathered by the Graude Foundation to become the future protectors of the goddess Athena. In the Galaxian Wars arc, Nachi loses his fight against Phoenix Ikki and decides to return to Liberia to further his training. He later returns with Jabu, Ichi, Ban and Geki to rescue Tatsumi and the injured Athena at Sanctuary. They stay with them until Gemini Saga is defeated. In the Hades arc, Nachi and Ichi are appointed commanders of the Sanctuary guards. As the dead Silver Saints start appearing and they realize their attacks are useless, they are saved by Jabu. Later, Nachi risks his life to protect Seiya's sister, Seika, from Thanatos. He was voiced by Hideyuki Tanaka (episodes 1–60) and Takeshi Kusao (episodes 61–114) in the Saint Seiya anime. Kazunari Kojima voiced him in the Hades chapter OVAs. In English media, he was voiced by Nathan Parmer and Jessica Boone (as young Nachi).

Lionet Ban

Raionetto no Ban (子獅子星座の蛮)

Techniques: Lionet Bomber

The Bronze Saint of Lionet. Sent by the Graude Foundation to train to become a Saint, he earns his Cloth on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and is thus among the ten out of a hundred orphans that achieve the Foundation's goal. When he returns to Japan to participate in the Galaxian Wars, he meets an early defeat at the hands of Unicorn Jabu. Ashamed, he goes back to Tanzania to undergo further training and does not reappear until Athena is incapacitated by the golden arrow at Sanctuary. He protects the goddess from the soldiers and later remains at Sanctuary. At the climax of the Hades arc, he protects Seiya's sister, Seika, from the assault of Thanatos. He was voiced by Hirohiko Kakegawa and Rick Burford in the Japanese and English versions of the anime. In the Hades chapter OVAs, he was voiced by Naoki Imamura.

Bear Geki

Beā no Geki (大熊星座の檄)

Techniques: Hanging Bear

One of Mitsumasa Kido's one hundred children. He was sent to Canada to become the Bronze Saint of Bear and returns to Japan to participate in the Galaxian Wars tournament held by the Graude Foundation. After he is defeated by Pegasus Seiya, he returns to Canada to receive further training and does not reappear until he goes to protect Athena at Sanctuary. He remains there afterwards due to the impending war against Hades and stands his ground against Thanatos when he tries to kill Seiya's sister. He is voiced by Yūji Mikimoto and Rob Mungle in the Japanese and English versions of the Saint Seiya anime. In the Hades chapter OVAs, he is voiced by Kouhei Fukuhara.

Chamaeleon June

Kamereon no June (カメレオン星座のジュネ)

June trains alongside Shun on Andromeda Island under the tutelage of Cepheus Daidalos. Protective of Shun, she tries to make him quit to avoid getting hurt. Despite her wishes, Shun attains Sainthood and leaves her behind when he goes to Japan. She then completes her training and becomes the Bronze Saint of Chamaeleon. Soon after, her master is assassinated by Pisces Aphrodite. When she hears about the Bronze Saints' plans to defy Sanctuary, she sets out to stop Shun. He respects her feelings, but intends to join his brothers nonetheless and knocks her unconscious. The Andromeda Saint carries her to the Kido mansion to rest until his return. She later appears in a brief flashback during the Twelve Temples arc. She was voiced by Hiromi Tsuru.

Silver Saints

Shirubā Seinto (白銀聖闘士)

The Silver Saints wear the second highest-ranked Cloths. They possess advanced mastery over Cosmo, which enables them to reach speeds up to mach 5 and wield tremendous physical strength. One of their responsibilities is to take care of Cloths that do not have owners and train potential candidates for them. As many Saints and Cloths were lost in the last Holy War, increasing the number of Saints is an important task to be fulfilled before the next Holy War.

Silver Cloths are more resilient than Bronze Cloths. They freeze at a temperature of −200 °C. In total, there are twenty-four Silver Cloths, but Kurumada has only revealed twenty-one. Sixteen appear in Saint Seiya and three more in the first Saint Seiya theatrical release – those of Orion, Shield and Southern Cross. The twentieth and twenty-first Silver Cloths were shown in the Saint Seiya Encyclopedia, representing the constellations of Crateris and Ara. The Crateris Silver Saint has made an appearance in Next Dimension, wearing a Cloth entirely different from the one shown in the Encyclopedia, but the Ara Cloth has never been featured in any of Kurumada's manga to date. Additionally, the tombs of many deceased Silver Saints from past eras are shown in the graveyard of Sanctuary in the Hades arc. Although they do not appear physically, some of the names can be read on their tombs: Serge, Ludwig, Siroé, Gilles, Helga, Gavin, Tony, Kain, Algernon, Jose, Timothy, Ivan, Nigel, Jun, Isac, Cima, Tess and Edomon.

Eagle Marin

Īguru no Marin (鷲星座の魔鈴)

Techniques: Empty Fist, Meteor Fist, Eagle Toe Flash

The enigmatic female Silver Saint of Eagle with a strong personality. Her face is always hidden by a mask, as Athena demands that women abandon their femininity to become Saints. She becomes Seiya's mentor when he arrives at Sanctuary, as both are Japanese. Because of her physical appearance, Seiya wonders if she is his long lost sister Seika. Marin helps Seiya and the Bronze Saints fight off Hound Asterion and the other Silver Saints. She then leaves to visit the forbidden place known as Star Hill, where she learns the truth about the false Pope and his rise to power. She reappears near the end of the conflict at the Twelve Temples, saving Seiya's life and helping him reach the Pope's chambers. During the Poseidon arc, Marin is once again absent on unknown business and does not reappear until the climax of the war against Hades, accompanied by Seika. She reveals she had been searching for her long lost brother, Tōma. In Next Dimension, she keeps Angel Tōma, a soldier from the Heavenly Realm, from killing Seiya. Although he seems familiar to her, she remains ignorant of his true identity. Marin was voiced by Yuriko Yamamoto and Fumiko Inoue, and by Christine Auten in the English version of the anime.

Ophiuchus Shaina

Opyukusu no Shaina (蛇遣い星座のシャイナ)

Techniques: Thunder Claw

The temperamental but courageous female Saint of Ophiuchus. She covers her face with a silver mask, as Athena's laws demand that she abandon her femininity to become a Saint. Shaina mentored Seiya's rival, Cassios, whose defeat seemingly caused her to start to hate Seiya. In truth, Seiya had once seen her without her mask, an offense which required Shaina to either kill him or love him. At first, Shaina serves the false Pope, but she later admits she has feelings for Seiya and sides with the Bronze Saints in their rebellion against Sanctuary. She is instrumental in achieving victory during the battle against Poseidon, taking the Libra Gold Cloth to the Bronze Saints. In the Hades arc, Shaina leads a group of Bronze Saints in the defense of Sanctuary and risks her life to protect Seiya's sister Seika from Thanatos. She reappears in Next Dimension along with Cygnus Hyōga and Eagle Marin, following Tōma's attempt on Seiya's life. She was voiced by Mami Koyama and Yuka Komatsu in the animated adaptations of the series. In the English versions, she was voiced by Kira Vincent Davis.

Lizard Misty

Rizado no Misuti (蜥蜴星座のミスティ)

Techniques: Mavrou Trypa

The narcissistic Silver Saint of Lizard who considers himself inferior only to the goddess Athena. He is sent to Japan with a group of fellow Silver Saints to kill the renegade Bronze Saints. He creates a landslide to bury the Bronze Saints after Ikki comes back to his senses, but Aries Mu thwarts his attempt, teleporting them all to safety. Although Misty had never been hurt in battle before, Pegasus Seiya manages to overcome and defeat him. He was voiced by Yū Mizushima in the anime adaptation. In the Hades chapter OVAs, where Misty was revived by Hades along with other Silver Saints and fought Cygnus Hyōga, he was voiced by Takayuki Sasada. In the English version, he was voiced by Vic Mignogna.

Centaurus Babel

Kentaurusu no Baberu (ケンタウルス星座のバベル)

Techniques: Fotia Roufikthra

A master of pyrokinesis who can travel in the form of a will-o'-the-wisp. He is sent with Misty, Asterion and Moses to kill the Bronze Saints for their crimes against Sanctuary, however, due to Aries Mu's deception, he goes after the Black Saints and kills them instead. Believing his mission complete, he retreats and leaves Misty behind. After a while, Babel returns to find Misty dead. Hyōga then challenges and defeats Babel with his freezing Cosmo. Although Kurumada gave Babel's constellation name as Centaurus in the Shōnen Jump serialization of the manga, in the anime adaptation, the alternative Japanese Santōru (Centaur) was used. He was voiced by Yūji Mikimoto.

Whale Moses

Hoēru no Mōzesu (白鯨星座のモーゼス)

Techniques: Kaitos Spouting Bomber

Due to the Bronze Saints' participation in the Galaxian Wars, the Pope of Sanctuary issues the order to kill the young Saints. Moses is one of the Silver Saints sent to deal with them, but due to Aries Mu's intervention, he kills the Black Dragon instead. Thinking his mission complete, he retreats, but soon returns when Misty and Babel do not join him. Seiya then engages Moses in combat and defeats him. His constellation was first given as Whale by Kurumada in the manga serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump. In the TV series, it was modified to Kaitos (Greek for whale). In the English versions of the manga, it appears both as Whale and Cetus. His character was voiced by Kōji Totani.

Hound Asterion

Haundo no Asuterion (猟犬星座のアステリオン)

Techniques: Million Ghost Attack

Due to the Bronze Saints' participation in the Galaxian Wars, which goes against the rules of Sanctuary, the Pope sends a group of Silver Saints to kill them. When Misty and Babel fail to return, Asterion and Moses go back for them. Using his telepathic powers, Asterion discovers that Eagle Marin has betrayed them. Seiya tries to attack him and Moses, but, although he manages to defeat Moses, he is overwhelmed by Asterion's power. Marin then returns to fight against the Hound Saint. She defeats him, but lets him live to return to Sanctuary with a warning to the Pope. It is later revealed in the Hades arc of the manga that Asterion is killed after his return to Sanctuary. He was voiced by Kazuo Hayashi in the anime adaptation.

Crow Jamian

Kurou no Jamian (烏座のジャミアン)

Techniques: Black Wing Shaft

Known as the Saint who can control crows like his own limbs, the Crow Saint is part of the second team of Silver Saints tasked with the mission to kidnap Saori Kido and destroy the Colosseum where the Galaxian Wars took place. He succeeds in kidnapping the young woman, but Pegasus Seiya follows him. Jamian overpowers Seiya, but Saori retaliates, making the Silver Saint's crows attack their master instead. Confused and outraged, he calls her a witch and charges, only to be blasted away and killed with the arrival of Phoenix Ikki. He was voiced by Naoki Tatsuta in the anime adaptation.

Perseus Algol

Peruseusu no Arugoru (ペルセウス座のアルゴル)

Techniques: Ra's al-ghūl Gorgoneion

The Perseus Saint, sent to destroy the Colosseum where the Galaxian Wars tournament took place and kidnap Saori Kido. After Crow Jamian perishes at Ikki's hands, Algol, Capella and Dante reveal themselves. Ikki warns the Bronze Saints that Algol is different from other Saints. Algol soon turns Andromeda Shun into stone with the Shield of Medusa, which can petrify opponents when it opens its eyes. He fights Shiryū, but is defeated after the Dragon Saint blinds himself so that the Medusa Shield does not affect him. He was voiced by Akira Kamiya in the anime and by Masaya Onosaka in the Hades chapter OVAs.

Auriga Capella

Auriga no Kapera (御者座のカペラ)

Techniques: Saucer Attack

Like Shaina, Jamian, Algol and Dante, the Auriga Silver Saint is ordered to kidnap Saori Kido and destroy the Graude Foundation Colosseum where the Galaxian Wars had taken place. After Jamian's defeat, Ikki draws a line between himself and Capella and Dante, warning them not to cross it. Capella takes the dare and is knocked unconscious. After he rises again to attack the Bronze Saint with his flying saucers, Ikki kills him. He was voiced by Katsuji Mori in the anime adaptation of the series.

Kerberos Dante

Keruberosu no Dante (地獄の番犬座のダンテ)

Techniques: Hell Flails

Like Jamian, Shaina, Algol and Capella, the Kerberos Saint is ordered to destroy the Graude Foundation Colosseum and kidnap Saori Kido. After Ikki kills Jamian, Dante reveals himself along with Algol and Capella. Once Ikki knocks out Capella, Dante charges, only to have his chained steel balls destroyed by the Bronze Saint. Ikki knocks Dante unconscious as well. Furious once he reawakens, Dante goes after Ikki, but is stopped by Shun. During their fight, Shun comments that Dante's chains "were merely designed to hold Hades's hound" and that they are like tinsel compared to his Nebula Chain, which he uses to defeat Dante. In the anime, he was voiced by Akira Murayama.

Heracles Algethi

Herakuresu no Arugeti (ヘラクレス星座のアルゲティ)

Techniques: Kornephoros

The Saint of Heracles, one of the three sent to watch over Leo Aiolia as he goes to Japan to deal with the rebelling Bronze Saints. Algethi is physically the strongest Saint in Sanctuary and, when Aiolia decides to spare Seiya's life, he and the others jump in to kill Seiya themselves. With the sudden appearance of the Sagittarius Gold Cloth, however, Seiya manages to kill all three Silver Saints in seconds. He was voiced by Daisuke Gōri in the anime and by Naoki Imamura in the Hades chapter OVA adaptation.

Musca Dio

Musuka no Dio (銀蝿座のディオ)

Techniques: Dead End Fly

The Saint of Musca, one of the three sent to watch over Leo Aiolia as he goes to Japan to deal with the rebelling Bronze Saints. He spends most of the time sneering at his fellow Saints. When Aiolia decides to spare Seiya's life, Dio, Algethi and Sirius jump in to attack Seiya. Dio is killed after the Sagittarius Gold Cloth appears to protect Seiya. Although Kurumada named him Dio in the Shōnen Jump magazine serialization of the manga, in the anime adaptation, he was known as Dios. He was voiced by Ryōichi Tanaka.

Canis Major Sirius

Kanisu Mayoru no Shiriusu (巨犬座のシリウス)

When Leo Aiolia goes to Japan to deal with the rebelling Bronze Saints, he is sent under the watch of three Silver Saints. Sirius of Canis Major is the leader of that group and refuses to ignore Aiolia's softness in handling Seiya. Sirius and the others reveal themselves, remarking that the Gold Saint is too weak, and attack Seiya. Overwhelmed, it is not until the sudden appearance of the Sagittarius Gold Cloth that Seiya gains the power to kill the three Silver Saints. Sirius was voiced by Ikuya Sawaki in the anime adaptation.

Sagitta Ptolemy

Sajitta no Toremī (矢座のトレミー)

Techniques: Phantom Arrow

The Saint of Sagitta, sent by the Pope to greet Athena and the Bronze Saints at Sanctuary. After explaining to them that they need to cross the Twelve Temples protected by the Gold Saints to reach the Pope, he attacks them with a shower of arrows. Only one of the arrows is real, however, and it hits Athena in the chest. Seiya retaliates and, before dying, Ptolemy says that the arrow will kill Athena within twelve hours and that only the Pope can remove it. He was voiced by Yūichi Meguro in the anime adaptation.

Cepheus Daidalos

Kefeusu no Daidarosu (ケフェウス星座のダイダロス)

The Silver Saint of Cepheus, who trains Shun and June on Andromeda Island. He is assassinated by Pisces Aphrodite, after siding with Shun on the belief that the Sanctuary is corrupted by evil. According to the official Saint Seiya Encyclopedia, he does not concentrate on one kind of attack method. He is skilled in nullifying attacks and knows how to manipulate the weapons of other Cloths that his own does not possess. Like Lyra Orphée, he is considered to be as powerful as a Gold Saint. In the anime, he was replaced by Cepheus Albiore, a character with a different appearance.

Lyra Orphée

Raira no Orufe (琴座のオルフェ)

Techniques: Stringer Nocturne, Death Trip Serenade, Stringer Fine

The Silver Saint of Lyra, said to be as powerful as a Gold Saint, and a virtuoso of the lyre. Like the tragic Greek character Orpheus, he had a lover called Eurydice. When she died, he went to play to Hades so he would return Eurydice to life. Having his wish granted, he was told to not look back during the trek to the world of the living. Before he reached the surface, however, Sphinx Pharaoh tricked Orphée into turning around, faking the light of the sun. Eurydice turned halfway into stone and thus Orphée decided to stay with her forever in the Underworld. When Athena's Saints invade Hades's domain, he frees Seiya and Shun from the clutches of Pharaoh. This action leads to the revelation of Pharaoh's trick and the Saint kills the Specter in a battle of music. Renewing his vows as a Saint, Orphée helps his comrades fight Hades and takes them to the god's throne room. With sweet melody, he puts the three Magnates and Pandora to sleep, but Wyvern Rhadamanthys soon awakens and kills him. He was voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya in the Hades chapter OVAs.

Crateris Suikyō

Kuraterisu no Suikyō (杯座の水鏡, Suikyō meaning water mirror)

Techniques: White Lotus of Ice Spears

The Silver Saint of Crateris in the Holy War between Hades and Athena set in 1747. He trains at Sanctuary with Shion and Dohko to become a Silver Saint but disappears after being ordered to investigate the countryside. He meets Tenma and Alone one night during a snowstorm in Italy and becomes their mentor, teaching Tenma the ways of the Saints. Suikyō leaves them eventually and it is not until Hades awakens in Alone that he shows himself again to Tenma, Shion and Dohko, this time as the Heavenly Valiance Star, Garuda Suikyō (天雄星ガルーダの水鏡, Tenyūsei Garūda no Suikyō). A servant of Hades, he defeats the Saints but retreats at Pandora's summon. She later sends him to infiltrate Sanctuary, with orders to kill the infant Athena.

Gold Saints

Gōrudo Seinto (黄金聖闘士)

The most powerful Saints in Athena's army and her personal guard, invincible since the age of myth. They wear the twelve Gold Cloths that correspond to the constellations of the zodiac, the most powerful among the eighty-eight Cloths, and each guard one of the Twelve Temples of the zodiac that stand before the Pope's and Athena's chambers. The Gold Saints have mastered the seventh sense, the essence of Cosmo, which grants them miraculous abilities like the capacity to move at the speed of light.

Aries Mu

Ariesu no Mū (牡羊座のムウ)

Techniques: Crystal Wall, Crystal Net, Stardust Revolution, Starlight Extinction

The Gold Saint of Aries in the 20th century, disciple of Aries Shion and mentor to Kiki. A serene young man who possesses prodigious strength, he is known as the most gifted Gold Saint in psychokinesis as well as the only person who can repair Cloths. Mu left Sanctuary after Shion's murder, as he had suspicions about the legitimacy of the Pope, and settled in the remote region of Jamir, in the Himalayas. A valuable ally to the Bronze Saints, he first helps them by repairing their Cloths, then saves their lives during the battle against the Black Saints and assists Seiya in the duel against Lizard Misty. During the conflict at the Twelve Temples, he helps them depose the false Pope, revealing to them the secret of the seventh sense. While Seiya fights Poseidon, he keeps the eager Gold Saints from departing for battle, as Hades's return to Earth is imminent. In the Hades arc, Mu defeats several Specters before falling to Wyvern Rhadamanthys, who then throws him into Cocytus prison. Later revitalized by Athena's Cosmo, he joins his fellow Gold Saints in their final sacrifice to open a path to Elysion so the Bronze Saints can help Athena defeat Hades. He was voiced by Kaneto Shiozawa and Takumi Yamazaki in Japanese media. In the English version, he was voiced by Paul Locklear.

Taurus Aldebaran

Taurasu no Arudebaran (牡牛座のアルデバラン)

Techniques: Great Horn

The Gold Saint of Taurus in the 20th century. A good-natured giant with wondrous physical strength whose attacks are similar in principle to iai combat, Aldebaran is committed to the protection of peace and justice on Earth. During the conflict at the Twelve Temples, he first opposes the Bronze Saints, as he was tricked by the Pope into deeming them traitors. He fights Seiya, whose determination causes him to doubt the legitimacy of the Pope. By the end of the war for Sanctuary, Aldebaran realizes the truth about the Pope and swears allegiance to Athena. In the Poseidon arc, he protects the hospitalized Bronze Saints from Siren Sorrento's murder attempt, deafening himself to try to counter the General's attacks. In the Hades arc, he kills and is killed by Deep Niobe. He later resurrects in the Underworld to join his fellow Gold Saints in a final sacrifice to pierce the Wailing Wall and open a gateway to Elysion. He was voiced by Tesshō Genda in Japanese media.

Gemini Saga

Jemini no Saga (双子座のサガ)

Techniques: Galaxian Explosion, Another Dimension, Demon Emperor's Delusional Fist

The Gold Saint of Gemini in the 20th century and elder twin brother of Kanon. Once the embodiment of the ideal Saint, a young man beloved by all and devoted to Athena, Saga is afflicted by a second, evil, personality which his brother Kanon manipulates to stray him from the path of virtue. Compelled by this evil side, Saga seizes Sanctuary, usurping the aged Pope's throne after secretly murdering him, and attempts to kill the infant Athena to rule the world himself. Although Aiolos keeps him from taking Athena's life, Saga remains as the false Pope for thirteen years, until the Bronze Saints uncover his deception. Freed from his evil side after his defeat, Saga commits suicide to atone for the atrocities he committed. He returns in the Hades arc, resurrected by Hades. Pretending to aim to take Athena's life, Saga seeks to reveal to her the strategy for victory against Hades, but ultimately watches in horror as she takes her own life in front of him. He returns to the Underworld, as the life Hades bestowed on him was only temporary, and does not reappear until the climax of the war, when Athena's Cosmo brings him back to life to join his comrades in a final sacrifice to pierce the Wailing Wall. Kurumada revealed he derived Saga's name from the kanji 性, which means destiny or nature. In Japanese media, he was voiced by Kazuyuki Sogabe, Akio Nojima and Ryōtarō Okiayu. Additionally, the illusion of the Gemini Saint in the Gemini Temple was voiced by Katsuji Mori.

Gemini Kanon

Jemini no Kanon (双子座のカノン)

Techniques: Galaxian Explosion, Golden Triangle, Demon Emperor's Delusional Fist, Delusion Fist

Gemini Saga's twin brother. Consumed by evil since his youth, Kanon approaches Saga with a plan to murder Athena and seize Sanctuary. Horrified by Kanon's intentions, Saga imprisons him in Cape Sounion, sentencing him to death. While imprisoned, Kanon's life is sustained by a mysterious force and he is able to find Poseidon's Undersea Temple. Removing Athena's seal from the amphora that contains the god, he frees Poseidon and fools the deity into thinking he is one of his Generals, Sea Dragon Kanon (海龍のカノン, Shī Doragon no Kanon). When Poseidon possesses the young Julian Solo, Kanon plots to manipulate Solo and harness Poseidon's power to fulfil his ambitions to rule the world. His plans eventually backfire and Kanon regrets his actions, which have caused the loss of millions of lives to the cataclysms brought upon Earth by the God of the Seas. Realizing it was Athena who saved his life in Cape Sounion, Kanon protects her from Poseidon and renounces his wicked ways. Before the war against Hades breaks out, Athena forgives Kanon for his sins and he embraces his destiny as Gold Saint, defeating numerous Specters. At the climax of the war on the Underworld, Kanon sends the Gemini Gold Cloth to his resurrected brother Saga to help him pierce the Wailing Wall and sacrifices his life to eliminate Wyvern Rhadamanthys. Achieving redemption for his past crimes at last, Kanon dies happy to have been able to use his power to help his fellow men. Kurumada revealed he derived Kanon's name from Canon Island, in Ireland. His character was voiced by Kazuyuki Sogabe and Ryōtarō Okiayu.

Cancer Deathmask

Kyansā no Desumasuku (蟹座のデスマスク)

Techniques: Praesepe Underworld Waves

The Gold Saint of Cancer in the 20th century. Sadistic and merciless by nature, Deathmask strayed from the ideals of the Saints and made no distinction between enemy and innocent. He kept the souls of his victims as trophies in his Temple, tormenting them by depriving them of their eternal rest. His skills include the ability to travel to the threshold of the Underworld. Deathmask swears allegiance to the false Pope, as he considers his evil deeds will be deemed just in the future. He is sent by Saga to murder Libra Dohko in Rozan, but abandons his mission due to the interventions of Dragon Shiryū and Aries Mu. During the conflict at the Twelve Temples, he and Shiryū fight at the Hill to the Land of Spirits, but the Cancer Gold Cloth deems Deathmask unworthy of wearing it and allows Shiryū to defeat him. It was revealed in the Poseidon arc that Deathmask found his forgotten loyalty to Athena after death. He is later resurrected by Hades, to whom he swears allegiance while secretly remaining loyal to Athena, but is killed once again by Wyvern Rhadamanthys. He revives a second time in the Underworld, to join his fellow Gold Saints in a final sacrifice to open a gateway to Elysion so the Bronze Saints may help Athena defeat Hades. He was voiced by Ryōichi Tanaka.

Leo Aiolia

Reo no Aioria (獅子座のアイオリア)

Techniques: Lightning Bolt, Lightning Plasma

The Leo Saint of the 20th century and younger brother of Sagittarius Aiolos. Powerful and passionate about his duty to protect peace and justice and fight for Athena, Aiolia was regarded along Scorpio Milo as the pride of Sanctuary. Despite having grown up under the stigma of his brother's alleged treason, Aiolos's memory shines brightly in Aiolia's life. He is deceived by Saga into deeming the Bronze Saints traitors and Saori Kido an usurper of Athena's name and is sent to kill them under the watch of three Silver Saints. He then sees a vision of his deceased brother, confirming Saori's true identity. Aiolia pledges his loyalty to her and returns to Sanctuary to confront the Pope. After a brief battle, the Pope puts Aiolia under the control of his Demon Emperor's Dellusional Fist, the effects of which will not fade until Aiolia takes a life. During the battles at the Twelve Temples, Aiolia opposes the Bronze Saints. He is kept from killing Seiya by Cassios, who sacrifices his life so Aiolia will regain his senses. In the Poseidon arc, Aiolia is eager to join the battle, but is kept from doing so by Aries Mu, as the war against Hades is imminent. In the Hades arc, the Leo Saint kills many Specters, but is defeated and thrown into the Cocytus prison by Wyvern Rhadamanthys. Later, he is revitalized by Athena's Cosmo and rejoins his brother and fellow Gold Saints in a final sacrifice to pierce the Wailing Wall. He was voiced by Hideyuki Tanaka in Japanese media.

Virgo Shaka

Barugo no Shaka (乙女座のシャカ)

Techniques: Om, Ham, Demon Pacifier, Transmigration to the Six Realms, Dharmacakra Mudrā, Heavenly Supremacy of Spirits of Rivers and Mountains over Evil, The Treasures of Heavens

The Virgo Gold Saint in the 20th century, an enlightened being who, despite his youth, conversed with the gods. Shaka's mastery over his Cosmo causes him to be regarded as "the man closest to the gods". He keeps his eyes closed at all times, depriving himself of the sense of sight to amass his Cosmo, and thus it was said that no one survived once he opened his eyes. A Buddhist by conviction, he is also a true Gold Saint who fights for justice and only remained loyal to the false Pope as his ability to discern a being's true nature told him that the Pope's was a benevolent one. During the conflict at the Twelve Temples, Shaka fights Phoenix Ikki and both are hurled into an alternate plane of existence as a result. They return to the physical plane with Aries Mu's help and Shaka then sides with the Bronze Saints and pledges loyalty to Athena. In the Poseidon arc, Shaka remains in Sanctuary as his strength would be needed in the upcoming war against Hades, during which he wreaks havoc among the ranks of the Specters. He reveals the secret of the eighth sense to Athena, a crucial gambit to achieve victory against Hades. At the climax of the war, Shaka rejoins his comrades in a final sacrifice to open a gateway to Elysion. He was voiced by Yūji Mitsuya in the anime adaptation.

Libra Dohko

Raibura no Dōko (天秤座の童虎)

Techniques: Rozan Hundred Dragons Force, Rozan Rising Dragon Force

A former Bronze Saint who was promoted to Gold Saint of Libra, Dohko is, along with his close friend Aries Shion, one of the only two survivors of the war against Hades in the 18th century. He is granted the divine gift of the Misopethamenos by Athena, which considerably slows his aging, to guard the tower at Rozan that contains the sealed souls of Hades's Specters. He becomes a diminutive, wrinkled old man but is revered as the wise Rōshi, the Old Master. Dohko holds the task to judge good and evil among the Saints. He adopts the orphaned Shunrei and mentors Dragon Shiryū, instilling into him the ideals of men of peace. He refuses to answer the summons from the false Pope of Sanctuary and, during the conflict of the Twelve Temples, sides with the Bronze Saints, lending them the Libra Gold Cloth to release Cygnus Hyōga from Aquarius Camus's ice coffin. After Saga's defeat, Dohko becomes the highest authority among the Saints. In the Poseidon arc, he forbids the Gold Saints from entering the battle, as their strength would be needed in the coming war against Hades, and sends the Libra Cloth to the Bronze Saints so they can destroy the pillars of Poseidon's temple. Weeks later, Dohko realizes Hades's seal is failing and leaves for Sanctuary to battle the God of the Underworld. He regains his youth and former strength and reveals the secret of the eighth sense to the Saints so they can invade the Underworld. He devises the strategy to pierce the Wailing Wall and reveals the location of Hades's true body in Elysion. At the climax of the battle, Dohko sacrifices his life along with his fellow Gold Saints to open the gateway to Elysion. His name is occasionally rendered as Tóng-Hǔ, the Chinese reading of the kanji of his name, meaning young tiger. His character was voiced by Kōji Yada (as Rōshi), Michitaka Kobayashi and Kenyū Horiuchi.

Scorpio Milo

Sukōpion no Miro (蠍座のミロ)

Techniques: Restriction, Scarlet Needle, Scarlet Needle – Antares

The Scorpio Gold Saint in the 20th century. A man of honor and impeccable conduct, like Leo Aiolia, Milo is regarded as the pride of Sanctuary. His loyalty to Athena leads him to obey the false Pope of Sanctuary, although he suspects his legitimacy. During the conflict at the Twelve Temples, Milo first opposes the Bronze Saints. He engages Cygnus Hyōga in a battle so intense that Milo is forced to use his killing strike, Antares, for the very first time. Moved by Hyōga's determination, however, he realizes that the Bronze Saints can only be devoted to the true Athena and neutralizes Antares's effects. After Saga's defeat, Milo pledges loyalty to Saori Kido. During the war against Poseidon, he is eager to join the battle at the Undersea Temple to save the Bronze Saints' lives, but is restrained from doing so by Aries Mu, since the Gold Saints were to be crucial in the upcoming war against Hades. In the Hades arc, Milo subjects Kanon to a tortuous trial to test his loyalty. Milo is later defeated by Wyvern Rhadamanthys and thrown into the Cocytus prison. At the climax of the battle, he is brought back to life by Athena's Cosmo and sacrifices himself along with his fellow Gold Saints to open a path through the Wailing Wall, so the Bronze Saints can help Athena defeat Hades. His character was voiced by Shūichi Ikeda and Toshihiko Seki in the animated adaptations.

Sagittarius Aiolos

Sajitariasu no Aiorosu (射手座のアイオロス)

Techniques: Atomic Thunderbolt (anime only)

The Sagittarius Gold Saint in the 20th century, embodiment of virtue and a role model for all Saints. He is Leo Aiolia's older brother and subject of his profound admiration. Pope Shion chooses Aiolos as his successor for his deep devotion to Athena, sparking Saga's rebellion. Aiolos foils Saga's attempt to assassinate Athena and is subsequently mortally wounded by Capricorn Shura, who is deceived by Saga into deeming him a traitor. Aiolos dies under the stigma of betrayal after entrusting Athena to Mitsumasa Kido. His name is not cleared until years later, as Athena cleanses the Sanctuary of Saga's evil. Even in death, he continues to protect Athena by lending Seiya his strength and granting him the use of the Sagittarius Cloth in dire situations, such as in the battle against the three Silver Saints who accompanied Aiolia to Japan and the battles against Poseidon and Thanatos. Aiolos resurrects in the Underworld and sacrifices his life along with the rest of the Gold Saints to pierce the Wailing Wall and open a path for the Bronze Saints to follow Athena and help her defeat Hades. He was voiced by Yūsaku Yara in the anime adaptation.

Capricorn Shura

Kapurikōn no Shura (山羊座のシュラ)

Techniques: Excalibur, Jumping Stone

The Capricorn Gold Saint in the 20th century. He wields the power of the holy sword Excalibur, which makes his limbs as sharp as a razor blade. A fierce and loyal warrior, Shura nonetheless follows the false Pope as he believes that those with power are automatically righteous and that, even though the Pope is evil, he can still do good exerting his power. Deceived by the Pope, Shura mortally wounds Sagittarius Aiolos as he tries to protect the infant Athena. During the conflict of the Twelve Temples, Shura engages Dragon Shiryū in battle. Witnessing the young Saint's willingness to sacrifice his life for Athena and for justice, Shura is flooded by his forgotten loyalty to the goddess. Since Shiryū's final attack would cost the Dragon Saint his life, Shura passes on to him the power of Excalibur and commands the Capricorn Cloth to protect Shiryū, dying in his stead. After death, Shura continues to help Shiryū, guiding him on how to defeat Poseidon's General Chrysaor Krishna. Shura proves his commitment once more when he pledges loyalty to Hades while secretly remaining a true Saint. After dying a second time in the events of the Hades arc, he resurrects in the Underworld to sacrifice his life along his fellow Gold Saints to pierce the Wailing Wall and help Athena defeat Hades. He was voiced by Kōji Totani and Takeshi Kusao in the anime and OVA adaptations of the manga.

Aquarius Camus

Akueriasu no Kamyu (水瓶座のカミュ)

Techniques: Diamond Dust, Aurora Execution, Freezing Coffin

The Aquarius Gold Saint in the 20th century. A righteous Saint who leads an exemplary life, Camus mentors Cygnus Hyōga and Poseidon's General Kraken Isaac. He teaches them the ways of the Saints, emphasizing stoicism and impassiveness in battle. Although he is suspicious of the false Pope, Camus stands against the Bronze Saints during the conflict of the Twelve Temples. He fights Hyōga in a duel to the death. Seeing his pupil's determination, Camus's suspicions are confirmed and he decides to teach Cygnus the secret of the absolute zero to guarantee his victory against the Pope. Camus perishes then, but continues to protect Athena from beyond the grave as he helps Hyōga reach victory in dire situations. Camus is later resurrected by Hades, to whom he swears fealty while secretly remaining a true Saint of Athena. He dies again during the events of the Hades arc, but is brought back to life in the Underworld to join his fellow Gold Saints in their final sacrifice to pierce the Wailing Wall and help Athena defeat Hades. He was voiced by Rokurō Naya and Nobutoshi Canna in the anime and OVA adaptations of the manga.

Pisces Aphrodite

Pisukesu no Afurodīte (魚座のアフロディーテ)

Techniques: Bloody Rose, Piranhan Roses, Royal Demon Roses

The Pisces Gold Saint in the 20th century. Mesmerizingly beautiful, vanity and narcissism have strayed him from the path of virtue. He swears allegiance to the false Pope of Sanctuary despite knowing of his evil intentions, justifying himself with his belief that justice is wielded by the strongest. Aphrodite murders Cepheus Daidalos, Andromeda Shun's mentor, to punish him for his rebellion against the Pope. During the conflict of the Twelve Temples, Shun kills Aphrodite after a lengthy battle, avenging his master's death. Aphrodite found his forgotten loyalty to Athena after death. In the Hades arc, he is resurrected along with other deceased Saints and swears allegiance to Hades while secretly remaining loyal to Athena. He is thrown back into the Underworld by Wyvern Rhadamanthys but later rejoins his Gold Saint comrades to sacrifice his life along theirs and pierce the Wailing Wall that separates the Saints from Elysion, where Athena battled Hades. He was voiced by Keiichi Nanba in the animated adaptations of the manga.

Aries Shion

Ariesu no Shion (牡羊座のシオン)

Techniques: Crystal Wall, Stardust Revolution

Mu's mentor and former Aries Gold Saint. Along with Libra Dohko, Shion is a survivor of the war against Hades in the 18th century, after which Athena chose him to become the Pope of Sanctuary. His reign lasts until he is murdered by Gemini Saga in the 20th century. Hades resurrects him thirteen years after his death and offers him eternal life in exchange for Athena's head. Incorruptibly loyal to his goddess, Shion accepts the offer so he can give Athena her divine Cloth. Unable to fulfil his goal, before dying, he passes it on to the Bronze Saints and instructs them to go to the Underworld and kill Hades. In Next Dimension, it is revealed that he was once a Bronze Saint before being promoted. He was voiced by Nobuo Tobita in the Hades chapter OVA adaptation.

Taurus Ox

Taurasu no Okkusu (牡牛座のオックス)

Techniques: Great Horn

The giant Gold Saint of Taurus in the 18th century. He first appears punishing Shion and Dohko for trying to kill Alone, something he considers reckless and adventurous, as both had been recently promoted to Gold Saints and had yet to master their seventh sense. He and Capricorn Izō realize that their goddess might come from the future. Virgo Shijima confirms it and they soon hurry to the statue of Athena at the top of Sanctuary, where the infant Athena had descended. The Pope orders them to return to their temples, though. Later, Ox effortlessly kills the cadre of Specters accompanying Garuda Suikyō and engages the Magnate in battle. He displays immense strength, but is outsmarted and killed by Suikyō.

Gemini Abel

Jemini no Aberu (双子座のアベル)

Techniques: Another Dimension, Demon Emperor's Delusional Fist

The younger Gemini Gold Saint in the 18th century. He calls his brother Cain a shadow who has appeared and disappeared around him since childhood. An enemy of Athena, he forces Shun and Tenma to wander the labyrinth of his temple before engaging both Bronze Saints in battle. The arrival of Garuda Suikyō interrupts him and the two engage in a duel that ends with the Gemini Saint putting Suikyō under the influence of the Demon Emperor's Dellusional Fist.

Gemini Cain

Jemini no Kain (双子座のカイン)

The Gemini Saint in the 18th century and older brother of Gemini Abel. Committed to Athena and Justice, he calls Abel a shadow who he has seen appear and disappear around him since childhood. He appears at the Gemini Temple, interrupting his brother's battle against Garuda Suikyō.

Cancer Deathtoll

Kyansā no Desutōru (蟹座のデストール)

Techniques: Praesepe Underworld Waves

The Cancer Gold Saint of the 18th century, also known as "Deathtoll, the coffin-maker". He is tasked with putting souls who remain attached to the physical world into coffins and taking them to the gateway of the Underworld. His speech reveals a flamboyant and androgynous personality. He tries to keep Shun and Tenma from crossing his Temple by trapping them in hayaoke caskets and sending them to the entrance to the Underworld. When Shun manages to return and Tenma escapes due to a faulty coffin, Deathtoll puts them into the Omerta, the coffin of silence passed down from the age of myth, to ensure they can never return, as it absorbs those who rebel against Athena and traps them for eternity. When Suikyō arrives at Deathtoll's temple, the Cancer Saint tries to trick him into killing the young Bronze Saints, only to become the Specter's target. Forced to fight seriously and determined to kill his opponents by throwing them into the Underworld, Deathtoll picks Suikyō as his first victim, giving Tenma the chance to trap him for eternity inside the Omerta. Defeated, Deathtoll is last seen crying for help from within the Omerta.

The Leo Gold Saint of the 18th century

Jyūhasseiki no Reo no Gōrudo Seinto (18世紀の獅子座の黄金聖闘士)

The Leo Gold Saint of the 18th century, known in Sanctuary as "the Savage Lion". His name, allegiance and motives have yet to be revealed by Masami Kurumada in Next Dimension.

Virgo Shijima

Barugo no Shijima (乙女座のシジマ)

The Virgo Gold Saint of the 18th century. Called "the silent man" and known as "the man closest to the gods", like his successor Shaka, Shijima is regarded as the most righteous of Athena's Saints. Shijima remains mostly silent to gather his Cosmo by depriving himself of speech and projects his thoughts to communicate with others. He first appears in chapter 14 of Next Dimension, mentioning to Taurus Ox and Capricorn Izō that he has felt Athena's Cosmo nearing the time they live in from the future. Soon enough, Athena crashes down at the top of Sanctuary and the Saints hurry up to find the infant goddess sleeping in a small crater. Shijima is about to pick her up when the Pope appears and orders the Gold Saints to return to their temples. On the way down, Shijima senses something bad and heads back to Athena's statue, where the Pope is about to stab the baby Athena with a dagger. Shijima pulls the baby away as Pisces Cardinale appears. The Pisces Saint first questions the Pope, then attacks Shijima, who is forced to flee to protect Athena.

Capricorn Izō

Kapurikōn no Izō (山羊座の以蔵)

Techniques: Excalibur

The Capricorn Gold Saint in the 18th century. Wielder of the sword Excalibur, he is also known as "Izō, killer of demons". He is calm and collected, and punishes Tenma, Shion and Dohko for their irresponsible actions near Hades's castle, although he does so with indulgence. He and Taurus Ox realize that their goddess might come from the future. Their suspicions are confirmed by Virgo Shijima, shortly before Athena descends with a crash at the top of Sanctuary. The Saints head to the site of her descent, where they find an infant Athena, but are ordered by the Pope to return to their temples. Kurumada named him after the historical figure Okada Izō, the famous samurai from the Bakumatsu period.

Pisces Cardinale

Pisukesu no Karudināre (魚座のカルディナーレ)

Techniques: Bloody Rose

The Pisces Gold Saint in the 18th century, regarded as the personification of beauty. Cardinale first appears as the Pope attempts to assassinate the infant Athena and is foiled by Virgo Shijima. Witnessing Shijima's efforts to protect the goddess, Cardinale realizes that the Pope is a traitor and attacks Shijima. Pisces then states his loyalty to Hades and chases after Shijima with the intent to kill the Saint.

Blue Warriors

Burū Uōriā (氷戦士)

Techniques: Blue Impulse (performed by Alexer)

An order of powerful warriors from the icy lands of Bluegrad, also known as Sinigrad in English publication. Their order was formed centuries ago by mighty warriors who, in the same way as Athena's Saints, were capable of using Cosmo to rend the skies with their fists and split the earth with their kicks. The Blue Warriors protect their homeland from menace and are led by Alexer (アレクサー, Arekusā), prince of Bluegrad. They were presented by Kurumada in volume 13 of Saint Seiya, in the short story arc dedicated to Hyōga, "Kōri no Kuni no Natassia Hen" (The chapter of Natassia from the Lands of Ice).

Marine Realm

Kaikai (海界)

In the same way Athena has Saints, Poseidon has an army that has assisted him since the age of myth, the Mariners (海闘士, Marīna). With Poseidon's Undersea Temple serving as its base, it is formed by hundreds of low-ranking soldiers and commanded by seven powerful warriors known as Generals (海将軍, Jeneraru), whose Cosmo rivals that of a Gold Saint. These Generals don armors called Scales, which are said to be as resilient as the Gold Cloths and are named after marine creatures. Their duty is to defend the Mammoth Pillars of the seven oceans that safeguard the Undersea Temple. The strongest pillar, the Main Breadwinner, is defended by Poseidon himself.

Julian Solo/Poseidon

Kaiō Poseidon (海皇ポセイドン, Kaiō meaning Emperor of the Seas)

As in Greek mythology, the Greek god Poseidon is the ruler of the seas, brother of Hades and Zeus. In Kurumada's story, he reincarnates on Earth by taking the body of a chosen member of the Solo family as a vessel for his soul. This Greek family is one of the wealthiest in the world and, enjoying Poseidon's blessing, has held hegemony over the seas for millennia. In the 20th century, the god takes the body of the family's young heir, a teenager named Julian Solo (ジュリアン・ソロ, Jurian Soro), and strikes the Earth with incessant rains to cleanse it of humans, whom he considers evil and unworthy of the blessings of the gods. He wishes to build an utopian society on top of the ruins once all humans are eradicated and to exact revenge on Athena for having sealed his soul after their last battle, two thousand years before. To this end, he holds Athena hostage in his Undersea Temple with the help of his army. He is ultimately sealed by Athena in her amphora, but later proves that he is not an evil deity, as he awakens briefly to help the Bronze Saints fight Hypnos and Thanatos in the Hades arc by sending them the Gold Cloths. He was voiced by Keiichi Nanba in the anime.

Mermaid Thetis

Māmeido no Tetisu (人魚姫のテティス)

Techniques: Death Trap Coral (anime only)

A loyal servant of Poseidon, bound to him by a debt of life. She was a beautiful fish, stranded on a beach, when a young Julian Solo saved her by tossing her back into the sea. She is the one who reveals to Julian his identity as Poseidon and, when he kidnaps Athena, she serves as mediator between the armies of both gods. She attacks Kiki, but Ophiuchus Shaina intervenes and defeats her. Thetis ultimately rescues Julian Solo when the Undersea Temple collapses after Athena removes Poseidon's soul from him. She then turns back into a fish. Upon finding it, Julian lets it back into the ocean, laying her to rest. She was voiced by Hiromi Tsuru in the anime.

Mariner Generals

Sea Horse Baian

Shīhōsu no Baian (海馬のバイアン)

Techniques: God Breath, Rising Billows

Baian is the protector of the North Pacific Ocean's Mammoth Pillar, one of the eight that keep the water above from flooding the Undersea Temple. He is challenged by Pegasus Seiya, who initially struggles with the Mariner's ability to use air currents to render himself invulnerable. However, thanks to the experience gained from fighting Lizard Misty, who used a similar technique, and a Cloth reinforced with the power of the Gold Saints, Seiya defeats Baian. In the anime, he was voiced by Sho Hayami.

Scylla Io

Sukyura no Io (スキュラのイオ)

Techniques: Queen Bee's Stinger, Eagle Clutch, Serpent Strangler, Vampire Inhale, Wolf's Fang, Grizzly Slap, Big Tornado

The guardian of the South Pacific Ocean Pillar. Upon Andromeda Shun's arrival, Io tries to deceive the Saint with an illusion of a maiden before engaging him in battle. Io uses attacks that match the six creatures that make up the Scylla from Greek myth, but, after withstanding all such attacks, Shun is able to devise counterattacks for each of them. Shun spares Io, but as he prepares to destroy the Pillar with the weapons of the Libra Cloth, the Mariner, compelled by his adamant devotion to Poseidon, jumps in front of the attack to stop it. Io's attempt fails and he is thus killed. In the anime, he was voiced by Issei Futamata.

Chrysaor Krishna

Kuryusaoru no Kurishuna (クリュサオルのクリシュナ)

Techniques: Flashing Lancer, Maha Roshni

As guardian of the Indian Ocean Pillar, Krishna uses a golden lance and spiritual power derived from the kundalini transcendental forces. Dragon Shiryū challenges the Chrysaor Mariner. He breaks the lance in half using Shura's Excalibur but is then confronted with Krishna's maximum Cosmo, unleashed through meditation. The combat ends when the Dragon Saint hits Krishna's chakra points, after losing his eyesight. He was voiced by Masaharu Sato in the anime adaptation.

Lyumnades Kasa

Ryumunadesu no Kāsa (リュムナデスのカーサ)

Techniques: Salamander Shock

Known as the "hunter of hearts", Kasa protects the Antarctic Ocean Pillar by means of treachery and deception, as he is able to draw from his enemies' most cherished feelings and turn them against them by masquerading as someone they hold dear. He takes out Pegasus Seiya, Cygnus Hyōga and Andromeda Shun with his illusions, however, once Ikki arrives and Kasa takes on the appearance of Esmeralda, the angered Phoenix Saint kills the Lyumnades Mariner. In the anime, he was voiced by Keaton Yamada.

Kraken Isaac

Kurāken no Aizakku (クラーケンのアイザック)

Techniques: Aurora Borealis

Once Hyōga's fellow apprentice in Siberia, he suffers an accident while saving Hyōga from drowning that costs him one of his eyes. As he falls to the bottom of the ocean, the Kraken rescues him and takes him to Poseidon's Undersea Temple in the Mediterranean. There, he becomes the Mariner guardian of the Pillar of the Arctic Ocean. He confronts Hyōga and blames him for everything that had gone wrong years ago. Hyōga exposes himself to attack, offering one of his eyes to repay his old friend, but it proves insufficient to appease Isaac's wrath. After fighting each other, Isaac dies in Hyōga's arms, congratulating him on becoming so powerful. He was voiced by Ryusei Nakao in the anime.

Siren Sorrento

Seirēn no Sorento (海魔女のソレント)

Techniques: Dead End Symphony, Dead End Climax

The guardian of the South Atlantic Ocean Pillar and a virtuoso of battle music. During Poseidon's cleansing of the world, the Siren Mariner is ordered to kill Seiya, Hyōga, Shun and Shiryū, who are recovering from the battles of the Twelve Temples at a hospital. He meets with Taurus Aldebaran's resistance, but Athena interrupts the battle, ordering Sorrento to take her to Poseidon. He obliges and returns with her to the Undersea Temple. After the Saints invade, he faces Andromeda Shun, who manages to defeat Sorrento and destroy his pillar. Suspicious of the Sea Dragon General, Sorrento realizes during Ikki's battle against Sea Dragon Kanon that Poseidon's resurrection and the ensuing war were the result of Kanon's ambition and not Poseidon's. After Athena seals Poseidon's soul and Julian returns to the surface, Sorrento follows. Together, they decide to travel the world and help the people that suffered in the catastrophe Poseidon had caused. He was voiced by Yoku Shioya in the anime.

Underworld Realm

Meikai (冥界)

Ruled by Hades and home of the Specters, the Underworld is the realm of the dead. It is composed of eight prisons where the souls of sinners receive punishment, after which lies Hades's palace, Giudecca, where the god's throne room is located along with the entrance to Elysion, the Wailing Wall. No living person can enter the Underworld without being subjected to Hades's rule unless they have awakened the eighth sense.

Hades

Meiō Hādesu (冥王ハーデス)

Techniques: Greatest Eclipse

The god who rules the Underworld. Aided by the twin gods Hypnos and Thanatos, Hades holds a long standing conflict with Athena for the dominion of Earth which has sparked bloody wars in the age of myth, the 15th, 18th and 20th centuries. Athena has defeated him every time. Son of Chronos and Rhea, Hades suffers a traumatic experience when he is wounded by the Pegasus Saint in the age of myth and decides to leave his true body in the unreachable Elysion until his rule over Earth is secure. He thus takes the body of the purest human in the era of his return as a host for his divine soul. Alone (アローン, Arōn) is his chosen vessel in 1747 and Andromeda Shun in 1990. In the 20th century, Hades's followers attack Sanctuary while the god remains hidden, but Athena and the Saints devise a way to invade the Underworld and expel the god from Shun's body. Hades retreats to Elysion, where he captures Athena and places her in the lethal Great Amphora. He then revives his true body to engage the Saints in a final battle and is shocked to see his feared enemy from the age of myth reincarnated in Pegasus Seiya. Athena is freed from the Amphora and, after a terrible battle, Hades is finally defeated for good. As he dies, the Underworld and Elysion crumble and Athena and her Saints return to Earth triumphant. As a final act of defiance, Hades curses Seiya with his Invisible Sword, to kill and prevent him from reincarnating again, a curse which Athena seeks to revert in Next Dimension.

In Next Dimension, Alone is Pegasus Tenma's best friend, whom the Saint has sworn to protect. As the 18th century holy war begins, Alone and Tenma escape from Libra Dohko and Aries Shion and end up outside a small mausoleum. A voice calls to Alone from within. As he enters, he finds Hades's sword and Pandora convinces him to grab it. The god awakens inside Alone and he ignores Tenma as he leaves for Hades's castle.

In the Hades chapter OVAs, he was voiced by Yūta Kasuya (in Shun's body) and Akio Ōtsuka (in spirit form and in his true body).

Pandora

Pandora (パンドラ)

Forever destined to unleash evil on Earth, Pandora is the guardian of Hades's soul and his sister in the 20th century. At a young age, she opens the forbidden box sealed by Athena and releases Hypnos and Thanatos. She is told that Hades will become her brother and that she must protect him until the advent of the final battle. In exchange, they grant her eternal life. In the final arc of Saint Seiya, she commands the first wave of Specters that attack Sanctuary in the name of Hades. Her relationship with Ikki is complex due to their past involving Shun and she is eventually converted to his cause as she witnesses his determination. Because she gives Ikki a necklace that allows him to freely cross dimensions and follow Hades into Elysion, Thanatos deems her a traitor and kills her. Pandora also appears in Next Dimension, during the 18th century, in a different incarnation. She meets Alone at a mausoleum and gives him Hades's sword, awakening the God of the Underworld. She was voiced by Maaya Sakamoto.

Thanatos

Shi o tsukasadoru kami Tanatosu (死を司る神タナトス)

Techniques: Terrible Providence

The God of Death and servant of Hades, who has fought against Athena's Saints since the age of myth. He resides in Elysion with his twin brother Hypnos and both see to their god's ambitions. As the more impulsive of the brothers, Thanatos is quick to attack the Bronze Saints when they arrive at Elysion, deeming their trespass blasphemy. When Thanatos is bruised by Pegasus Seiya, he feels personally offended and tries to kill the Saint's sister, Seika. This, however, backfires as Seiya rises to a new level of power, resurrects the Pegasus God Cloth and defeats Thanatos. He was voiced by Toshio Furukawa in the Hades chapter: Elysion OVAs.

Hypnos

Nemuri o tsukasadoru kami Hyupunosu (眠りを司る神ヒュプノス)

Techniques: Eternal Drowsiness

The God of Sleep and twin brother of Thanatos, who has served Hades since the age of myth. Hypnos is more cautious than his brother and stays out of the way of the Bronze Saints until they gain the God Cloths and prove to be dangerous to the gods themselves. He attempts to stop Pegasus Seiya, but is halted by the other Bronze Saints as they all resurrect their God Cloths and severely wound the god. Hypnos lives long enough to sense the moment when Hades true body awakens, succumbing to his injuries afterwards. He was voiced by Issei Futamata in the Hades chapter: Elysion OVAs.

Hades's 108 Specters in the 20th century

Meiō Hādesu no Hyakuhachi-nin no Supekutā (冥王ハーデスの108人の冥闘士)

The equivalents of Athena's Saints in Hades's army, composed of thirty-six Heavenly Stars and seventy-two Earthly Stars. The leaders of Hades's army are collectively known as the three Magnates of the Underworld and their might rivals that of the Gold Saints. In the same way the Saints have Cloths, the Specters wear dark Surplices.

In addition to the Specters, Hades's army also includes the Skeletons (冥王ハーデス軍の雑兵スケルトン, Meiō Hādesu gun no Zōhyō Sukeruton), rankless soldiers who wear weaker versions of the Surplices and are often armed with sickles, as they have no mastery over Cosmo. One of them, the Rankless Soldier Skeleton Marchino (雑兵スケルトンのマルキーノ, Zōhyō Sukeruton no Marukīno), is featured as a comic relief, leading Pegasus Seiya and Andromeda Shun to the Silent Tribunal in the Underworld, where he dies after offending Balron René. His voice was provided by Naoki Tatsuta.

Heavenly Fierce Star, Wyvern Rhadamanthys

Tenmōsei Waibān no Radamantisu (天猛星ワイバーンのラダマンティス)

Techniques: Greatest Caution

The first of the three Magnates introduced by Kurumada. Defying Pandora's orders, he sends a task force of Specters to Sanctuary to keep tabs on the revived Gold Saints. When the task force fails, he is punished by Pandora but remains on Earth in Hades's castle. When the Bronze Saints arrive, his subordinates confront them, allowing the Specter of Wyvern to descend into the Underworld, where he eventually faces Gemini Kanon a first time. He kills Lyra Orphée when the Saint tries to assassinate Hades and later meets Kanon again. After a long battle, the Saint performs a suicide attack that ends both their lives. Heavenly Noble Star, Griffon Minos

Tenkisei Gurifon no Mīnosu (天貴星グリフォンのミーノス)

Techniques: Cosmic Marionettion

One of the three Magnates, Specter of Griffon and judge of the souls of the dead that come to the Underworld. He sleeps through Orphée's assassination attempt on Hades and later faces Gemini Kanon, but is told to leave by Wyvern Rhadamanthys. He is injured when he stumbles upon the Wailing Wall just as the Gold Saints pierce it with a burst of sunlight. He chases the remaining Bronze Saints that have gone past the wall to Elysion but is pulverized by the pressure of that dimension which only divine blood could repel. Voiced by Kōichi Tōchika.

Heavenly Valiance Star, Garuda Aiacos

Tenyūsei Garūda no Aiakosu (天雄星ガルーダのアイアコス)

Techniques: Garuda Flap, Galactica Illusion

The Magnate of Garuda, fierce and proud. He falls victim to Orphée's power and sleeps through the Saint's attempt on Hades's life. He later faces off against Phoenix Ikki, which leads to his demise. He was voiced by Shin-ichiro Miki.

Heavenly Expansion Star, Acheron Charon

Tenkansei Akerōn no Karon (天間星アケローンのカロン)

Techniques: Rolling Oar, Eddying Current Crusher

Like the mythical character, Charon ferries the dead over the river Acheron into Hell. He has a knack for singing during the trip which he charges a silver coin for. When Pegasus Seiya and Andromeda Shun arrive, the Specter bickers with them, but agrees to ferry them across for Shun's necklace. He is killed by Seiya after they reach the other shore. He was voiced by Shirō Saitō.

Heavenly Heroic Star, Balron René

Ten'eisei Baruron no Rune (天英星バルロンのルネ)

Techniques: Fire Whip, Reincarnation

With Griffon Minos unavailable to perform his duty as the Judge of departed souls, his subordinate Balron René steps in to wield his whip. René encounters Seiya and Shun in the Silent Tribunal and proceeds to judge them, but he is put under an illusion by Gemini Kanon in which he cuts Shun's body to pieces. When he runs outside to search for the remains, terrified about having injured Hades's body, he finds the Saints have disappeared. Rhadamanthys meets him along the way and exposes the Gemini Saint's trick. René manages to catch Kanon with his whip, but the Saint destroys him. He was voiced by Susumu Chiba.

Heavenly Beast Star, Sphinx Pharaoh

Tenjūsei Sufinkusu no Farao (天獣星スフィンクスのファラオ)

Techniques: Balance of Curse, Kiss in the Darkness

The guardian of the Second Prison in Hell. He was one of Hades's favorite Specters due to his musical talents, but he lost that position to Lyra Orphée after Pandora ordered him to trick the Saint into remaining in the Underworld forever and joining Hades's army. The Sphinx Specter came to resent the Saint since and would do anything to reclaim his position. When Pegasus and Andromeda arrive at his prison, he looses his pet Cerberus on them but with little effect. The Lyra Saint then intervenes and puts the Bronze Saints unconscious, assuring the Specter that he will dispose of them. Suspicious, Pharaoh follows him and finds that, just as he expected, the Saint let the other two live. Happy that he would finally be able to dispose of his rival, Pharaoh reveals that he was the one who tricked Orphée in the past, which sparks the Lyra Saint's anger. In the battle of lethal music that ensues, Pharaoh meets his end. He was voiced by Jun'ichi Suwabe.

Heavenly Diabolical Star, Alraune Queen

Queen was more cheerful than his two companions, Gordon and Sylphid, who all served under Wyvern Rhadamanthys. He first appears in Hades's castle on Earth, where he pummels the Bronze Saints before retreating to the Underworld. He shows up again as Athena's Saints break through the Wailing Wall to Elysion. As Dragon Shiryū stands to protect his fellow Saints, he kills Queen. He was voiced by Yūsei Oda in the Hades chapter OVAs.

Heavenly Imprisoning Star, Minotauros Gordon

More aggressive than his two companions, Queen and Sylphid, and part of Wyvern Rhadamanthys's troops, Gordon first appears in Hades's castle on Earth, pummelling the four Bronze Saints before retreating to the Underworld. When Athena's Saints break through the Wailing Wall to Elysion, Dragon Shiryū stands to protect his comrades and Gordon is killed in the ensuing battle. Voiced by HIRO.

The Basilisk Specter acts as the leader of his two companions, Gordon and Queen, all of whom serve under Rhadamanthys. They appear in Hades's castle on Earth, where they pummel the Bronze Saints before retreating to the Underworld. When Athena's Saints break through the Wailing Wall to Elysion, Sylphid follows them through the wall. Without the protection of divine blood, his Surplice does not withstand the dimensional pressure and he is vaporized. He was voiced by Tetsu Inada.

Techniques: Greed the Life, Sweet Chocolate

As one of Rhadamanthys's followers, he first appears at Hades's castle on Earth, where he fights Pegasus Seiya and leaves with the promise of a future rematch. When the Bronze Saints reach Hades's Underworld Palace, Giudecca, Valentine is ordered to dispose of the Phoenix and Pegasus Saints' bodies in the icy plains of Cocytus. Meanwhile, Pegasus awakens and announces that he has Athena's Cloth with him. Valentine takes him out of the ice and tries to take the goddess's Cloth, but Seiya retaliates and defeats the Harpy Specter. Voiced by Eiji Takemoto.

The warden of the dark lake of the Fourth Prison in Hell. When the Saints of Athena infiltrate the Underworld, Hyōga, Shiryū and Kanon reach the dark lake together, but the only way to get across is in Phlegyas's raft. He immediately attacks, knocking the Bronze Saints unconscious and throwing them onto the raft. Kanon then pushes them out into the lake and defeats the Specter with a single attack before jumping onto the raft himself. Voiced by Kiyoyuki Yanada.

Guardian of the Third Prison of Hell, the Golem Specter tries to kill Gemini Kanon, Dragon Shiryū and Cygnus Hyōga with a mudslide. Failing in the attempt, Rock falls before Shiryū's overwhelming power. Voiced by Yasuhiko Kawazu.

Earthly Violence Star, Cyclops Gigant

Chibōsei Saikuropusu no Giganto (地暴星サイクロプスのギガント)

Techniques: Giant Horde, Big Knuckle

The leader of the group of Specters sent by Wyvern Rhadamanthys to invade Sanctuary and keep tabs on the revived Gold Saints who were supposed to kill Athena. When the Gold Saints disappear, the Specters decide to continue the mission themselves. Gigant and his companions manage to get as far as the Virgo Temple, where they are intercepted by Virgo Shaka. It is then revealed that the revived Gold Saints had disguised themselves as Specters. Shaka allows the Gold Saints to pass and kills all six remaining Specters. With his last breath, the Cyclops Specter claims that those who serve Hades are rewarded with eternal life, to which Shaka replies that he, who had conversed with gods in the past, had never heard of a human who had been given eternal life. He was voiced by Hisao Egawa.

One of the seventeen Specters sent to Athena's Sanctuary to monitor the revived Gold Saints. During the invasion, the revived Gold Saints feign their defeat before the Virgo Temple and, in the confusion, Saga kills Cube and takes his Dullahan Surplice as a disguise. Voiced by Ryōtarō Okiayu.

Earthly Magic Star, Papillon Myu

Chiyōsei Papiyon no Myū (地妖星パピヨンのミュー)

Techniques: Ugly Eruption, Silky Thread, Fairy Thronging, ability to track opponents with Hell butterflies

Myu physically changed when he awakened as the Papillon Specter, becoming a living gel-like substance. During the invasion of Athena's Sanctuary, the Specters interrogate Aries Mu about the whereabouts of the revived Gold Saints. Myu tells them to back off because he wants to fight against the strongest psychic in Sanctuary, since that was also his position in Hades's army. During the fight, he goes through several stages of evolution, first transforming into a monstrous caterpillar, then a chrysalis before finally turning into an insectoid human. In the end, Mu defeats him. In the Hades OVAs, he was voiced by Atsushi Kisaichi.

Earthly Darkness Star, Deep Niobe

Chiansei Dīpu no Niobe (地暗星ディープのニオベ)

Techniques: Deep Fragrance, Dead Perfume

During the invasion of Sanctuary, he defeats Aldebaran at the Taurus Temple with a deadly pheromone. Staying behind as his comrades continue ahead, he then confronts Aries Mu. Aldebaran had, however, left a hint about Niobe's deadly pheromone in his Cosmo to Mu. Although Niobe tries to engage Mu in combat, he is torn apart by the delayed effects of Aldebaran's Great Horn. Voiced by Shingo Horii.

Earthly Hiding Star, Worm Raimi

One of the seventeen Specters sent in secret by Wyvern Rhadamanthys to attack Sanctuary. When the group reaches the Leo Temple, five of them are immediately killed by its guardian, Aiolia. As the other Specters continue to attack, Raimi sees this as an opportunity to restrain the Gold Saint and claim him as his victim. After the other Specters move on to the next temple, however, Aiolia frees himself and kills the Worm Specter. He was voiced by Kazuya Nakai.

Earthly Strange Star, Frog Zelos

Chikisei Furogu no Zērosu (地奇星フログのゼーロス)

Techniques: Jumping Smash

Zelos sends seventeen Specters to Sanctuary by order of Rhadamanthys and acts as messenger, keeping the Magnate informed on the progress of the mission. Zelos greets the revived Gold Saints at Hades's castle when they return with Athena's body. The Saints disregard him and Aquarius Camus pushes him aside with his cold winds. Thus, when the revived Saints lay dying on the floor after the time granted to them by Hades expires, the Specter takes out his frustration on Camus. The Bronze Saints then burst through the ceiling. With his own cold attacks, the Cygnus Saint kills the Frog Specter. Voiced by Bin Shimada.

Other Specters

An unnamed character who appears before Suikyō, conveying Hades's offer to save his younger brother Suishō's life in exchange for becoming one of the god's three Magnates.

Heavenly Realm

Tenkai (天界)

Ruled by the supreme god Zeus (天帝 ゼウス, Tentei Zeusu), Athena's father and younger brother of Hades and Poseidon, the Heavenly Realm is the home of many Olympians like Artemis and Apollo, as well as other deities. It was first mentioned in Saint Seiya, but does not play a part in the story until Next Dimension.

Lunar Realm

Gekkai (月界)

The Lunar Realm is ruled by the beautiful goddess of the Moon Artemis (月の女神 アルテミス, Tsuki no Megami Arutemisu), older sister of Athena and younger sister of Apollo. Although Artemis initially shows hostility to Athena for her past defiance of the Olympians Poseidon and Hades, she later offers her assistance, revealing that the only way to remove Hades's curse from Seiya's body is to travel back in time with the help of Chronos. Despite this, Artemis's servants secretly plot to kill Athena and her Saints, fearing the possible wrath of Zeus. Artemis's troops are called Satellites (月衛士, Sateraito). The Olympians' Angels (オリュンポス十二神の天闘士, Oryunposu Jyūni-shin no Enjeru), warriors of the Heavenly Realm, have also pledged allegiance to the Moon Goddess. Their armors are named Glory (天衣, Gurōrī).

Handmaid Callisto

Jijo Karisuto (侍女・カリスト)

Artemis's devoted servant and a high-ranking officer among the Satellites. Callisto is initially reticent to let Athena visit Artemis, as the Moon Goddess is angered by the Goddess of War's participation in past conflicts. Later, deeming Athena a risk to Artemis, Callisto orders Lascomoune, captain of the Satellites, to kill Athena. After the captain's failure, she resorts to sending Tōma, the Angel, to kill Pegasus Seiya, releasing him from the Lunar Prison. In chapter 30 of Next Dimension, Callisto thus replaces the shady, unidentified character that freed the Angel in Kurumada's short introductory comic book for the Saint Seiya Heaven Chapter: Overture film.

Forces Commander Lascoumoune

Yūgekitai-chō Rasukumūn (遊撃隊長 ラスクムーン)

Techniques: Crimson Viper

Captain of the Satellites and known for never letting her target escape, Lascoumoune is ordered by Callisto to kill Athena to spare grief to their goddess, Artemis. Her subordinates are defeated in an instant by Andromeda Shun, but Lascoumoune takes him down with her Crimson Viper attack. She is then seriously wounded by Phoenix Ikki and returns to Callisto in defeat.

Angel Tōma

Enjeru Tōma (天闘士・斗馬, Tōma meaning Horse of the North Star)

Techniques: Highest Altitude (Overture film only)

Eagle Marin's long lost brother, mentioned by Ophiuchus Shaina in the final volume of Saint Seiya. In Next Dimension, he appears in shackles, at the Lunar Prison. He is released by Callisto, who asks him to assassinate Pegasus Seiya in exchange for his freedom. He is interrupted in his mission by Cygnus Hyōga and Eagle Marin, whom he finds familiar but does not recognize. Tōma appeared for the first time as the Icarus Angel in the Saint Seiya Heaven Chapter: Overture film and its introductory short comic book authored by Kurumada, both of which share a plot unrelated to the Saint Seiya continuity. In this film, he was voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa.

Pandora's childhood pet dog, who flees in terror when he senses the presence of Hypnos and Thanatos.

Akira, Makoto, Tatsuya and Mimiko

Akira, Makoto, Tatsuya to Mimiko (アキラ、マコト、タツヤとミミ子)

Young orphan admirers of Pegasus Seiya from the Star Children Academy, the orphanage where the Saint once grew himself. Although they are based on unidentified orphans from Kurumada's manga, they are given names only in the anime adaptation. They also appear in some of the Saint Seiya films. They are voiced by: Yumi Tōma (Akira), Noriko Uemura (Makoto), Michiyo Yanagisawa (Tatsuya) and Yumiko Shibata (Mimiko).

Cassios

Kashiosu (カシオス)

A Saint apprentice under Ophiuchus Shaina and Seiya's rival for the Pegasus Cloth. Seiya cuts off one of his ears in their final match for the Cloth and he has hated Seiya for it ever since. Cassios holds great respect and affection for Shaina, but realizes that she has feelings for Seiya. Because of this, he protects Seiya at the battle of the Leo Temple and dies in his place, so that Aiolia will wake from Saga's Delusional Demon Emperor Fist. In the anime adaptation, he was also the younger brother of Docrates, an anime-only character. He was voiced by Banjo Ginga in Japanese media and by Matt Culpepper in the English version.

Django

Jango (ジャンゴ)

Techniques: Death Queen Inferno

The leader of the Black Saints before Ikki kills him to retrieve the Phoenix Cloth. He was voiced by Banjo Ginga in the anime adaptation.

Esmeralda

Esumeraruda (エスメラルダ)

A slave sold to an abusive farmer at Death Queen Island for three bags of grain. When Ikki first encounters her, he mistakes her for Shun due to their physical resemblance. She is later killed by Guilty, Ikki's master, to provoke Ikki into drawing power from his hatred. In the anime adaptation, she is also Guilty's daughter and was voiced by Chisato Nakajima.

Eurydice

Yuridīsu (ユリディース)

Lyra Orphée's lover. She enjoyed great happiness at his side, until she died because of a snake bite. Crushed by her demise, Orphée descends to the Underworld to bargain for her soul with Hades. Touched by the Saint's pleas and melody, the god allows her to return to Earth, but their trip is thwarted by Sphinx Pharaoh. She is thus condemned to remain in the Underworld, half-turned into stone. She helps Seiya and Shun unearth Orphée's forgotten loyalty to Athena. She was voiced by Yuko Nagashima in the Hades chapter OVAs.

Guilty

Nazo no Seinto Girutī (謎の聖闘士 ギルティー)

Phoenix Ikki's master during his stay at Death Queen Island. Harsh and heartless, he conceals his features behind a fearsome mask and employs brutal methods in Ikki's training to force him to become a being of pure hate. Guilty is responsible for Esmeralda's death and dies at the hands of Ikki in his final trial to become a Saint, after revealing that Ikki and the other orphans are all Mitsumasa Kido's children. Also known as the mysterious Saint, Masami Kurumada never revealed Guilty's destined constellation. He was voiced by Hidekatsu Shibata in the anime adaptation.

Hell's Watchdog Cerberus

Jigoku no Banken Keruberosu (地獄の番犬 ケルベロス)

Like the mythological creature, Cerberus is the enormous three-headed watchdog that guards the entrance to the Underworld. Savage, grotesque in appearance and emitting a foul stench, it relentlessly devours the souls of those who were greedy in life. It is in the care of Sphinx Pharaoh. Seiya and Shun defeat it temporarily.

Kiki

Appendekkusu no Kiki (アッペンデックスの貴鬼, Kiki meaning noble spirit)

Techniques: Telekinesis, the abilities to sense energy and to see invisible cracks on Cloths

Also known as Appendix Kiki, he is Aries Mu's apprentice. Like his master, Kiki bears two dots on his forehead and is one of the people of the continent of Mu. He does not fight, but can use telekinesis to defend himself. In the Poseidon arc, he is given the task to take the Libra Cloth to the Bronze Saints, valiantly risking his life to fulfil it. He was voiced by Hiroko Emori in the anime adaptation and by Karen Hatch in the English version.

Miho

Miho (美穂)

Seiya's childhood friend. She works at the orphanage where she, Seiya and Seika lived before Seiya was taken away by the Graude Foundation. Miho has feelings for Seiya. She is voiced by Naoko Watanabe and by Sasha Paysinger in the Japanese and English animated adaptations of the manga, respectively.

Mitsumasa Kido

Kido Mitsumasa (城戸光政)

He adopts Saori as her grandfather and takes her to Japan after finding a dying Sagittarius Aiolos in Greece. In the manga, he is the father of all the orphans sent around the world by the Graude Foundation to be trained as Saints. In the anime, he only takes the children from various orphanages and sends them to be trained. In his deathbed, he tells Saori the truth about his encounter with Aiolos, her divine origins and the purpose of her birth in this era. He was voiced by Kōhei Miyauchi and by Marty Fleck in the Japanese and English anime adaptations, respectively.

Nastassja

Natāsha (ナターシャ)

Also known as "Hyōga's Mama" (氷河の母親, Hyōga no Māma), she is one of Mitsumasa Kido's women and late mother of Cygnus Hyōga. After dying in a shipwreck, her body is preserved by the freezing waters of the Siberian sea. In the anime, she was voiced by Akiko Tsuboi. Kurumada later introduced a character of the same name in the short story arc dedicated to Hyōga in volume 13 of the manga: the sister of the leader of the Blue Warriors, Alexer.

Quasimodo

Kashimodo (カシモド)

An aged man from Rodorio village who led a righteous life. Irrationally fearing an undeserved eternal punishment while on his deathbed, Quasimodo was personally comforted by the Pope of Sanctuary, thus passing away in peace.

Seika

Seika (星華, meaning star flower)

Seiya's older sister, with whom he lost contact when he was sent to Greece to be trained as a Saint. After Seiya's departure, she wanders the world looking for him. Throughout the story, it is implied that Marin, Seiya's mentor, may be Seika, and some characters, including Seiya, believe it to be true. Marin and Seika share several characteristics (looks, age, height, birthday and birthplace) and Marin was known to have a lost brother she was looking for. At the end of the Hades chapter, however, Seika reappears as a separate character, amnesiac after following Seiya all the way to Greece alone. Her voice urges Seiya on in his fight against Thanatos. She was voiced by Yuriko Yamamoto in the Saint Seiya anime and by Satsuki Yukino in the Hades chapter OVAs.

Shunrei (春麗, meaning Spring beauty)

An orphan found by Dohko in Rozan, China. She cares deeply for Shiryū and her prayers for his safety often help him in his darkest hours, particularly in the battles against Cancer Deathmask and against the Specter trio of Sylphid, Gordon and Queen. She was voiced by Yumiko Shibata and Kimberly Prause in the Japanese and the English versions of the anime. In the Hades chapter OVAs, she was voiced by Eriko Sato and Ai Bandō (chapter Elysion).

Tokumaru Tatsumi

Tatsumi Tokumaru (辰巳 徳丸)

Saori's butler, bodyguard and right-hand man. Trusted man of Mitsumasa Kido and a black belt, third dan in Kendō, he oversaw the orphans who were to be sent worldwide to become Saints. Due to his extreme severity and at times abusive behavior, most of them resent him. He always tries to protect Saori, but even the rankless soldiers of Sanctuary would have defeated him if not for the intervention of Jabu and the other Bronze Saints. Ultimately, he is the comic relief of the series. He was voiced by Yukitoshi Hori in Japanese media and by Ron Howald in the English version.

Yakoff

Yakofu (ヤコフ)

A young boy from the village of Kohoutek, in Eastern Siberia, neighbor and good friend of Cygnus Hyōga. He watches over Nastassja's grave in Hyōga's absence. He also helps Hyōga in various domestic tasks and helps him escape from the Blue Warriors' imprisonment.

Hecate

Tsuki no Majo Hekāte (月の魔女ヘカーテ)

The elderly witch of the moon in Next Dimension. She tricks Athena into cutting her hair by hiding the path to the Temple of the Moon with an illusion and uses the hair to brew a potion which restores her youth. She later guides Athena to Chronos, who punishes her for trespassing on his domain. She resurfaces unharmed, however, and informs Ikki on how to follow Athena and Shun to the past.

Pegasus

Pegasasu (ペガサス)

Tenma's loyal steed. He saves Shion, Dohko and Tenma, protecting them from the Skeleton soldiers.

Suishō

Suishō (水清, meaning Water purity)

Crateris Suikyō's younger brother. As Suishō is afflicted by a terminal disease, Hades makes an offer to Suikyō to save his brother's life in exchange for his loyalty. Suishō dies shortly after the offer is made.

The Pope of the 18th century

Zenseisen no Kyōkō (前聖戦の教皇)

The Pope who rules Sanctuary in the 18th century, a survivor of the war against Hades in the 15th century. He grants Shion and Dohko the rank of Gold Saints and the right to don the Aries and Libra Gold Cloths. He foresees Hades's return to Earth and prepares Sanctuary to face such an event. After Athena appears, he tries to murder her, revealing himself loyal to Hades.

Other deities

Various deities that do not play a significant part in the story are mentioned throughout Saint Seiya. In the first chapter, the fierce God of War Ares (戦神アレス, Senjin Aresu) was said to have battled Athena and her Saints in the age of myth. The Giants (ギガース, Gigāsu), an ancient race of gods, also fought her in the Gigantomachia. In a flashback of Shaka's childhood, the young Saint converses with an enlightened being who teaches him the value of life. This entity is only hinted at as being Siddharta Gautama, the Supreme Buddha. In volume 27, Dohko mentions the mighty gods who gave birth to Hades, Chronos (クロノス, Kuronosu) and Rhea (レア, Rea). In the same volume, Thanatos speaks of the Nymphs (妖精, Ninfu), minor divine spirits who dwell in Elysion and produce beautiful music, and of the mischievous Cupid (キューピッド, Kyūpiddo), who is known to agitate them. The supreme god Zeus (天帝 ゼウス, Tentei Zeusu), ruler of the Heavenly Realm, is also mentioned as being Athena's father and brother of Hades and Poseidon.

Next Dimension reveals even more deities and further explores those who had only been mentioned in its prequel. Chronos, identified as the God of Time (時の神, Toki no Kami) and father of Zeus, makes a significant appearance. Said to be shapeless and hidden within the universe, Athena meets with him at the gate to time-space, where he helps her return to the 18th century to destroy Hades's sword before it can curse Seiya. He gives her three days to do so, but the trip transforms her into a baby. Along with Artemis of the Lunar Realm, the Sun God Apollo (太陽の神 アポロン, Taiyō no kami Aporon) is also introduced. He is the older brother of Athena and Artemis and watches over the time of the day.

Anime-only characters

The following are characters that do not exist in Masami Kurumada's manga and are found only in its anime adaptation. Saint Seiya author Kurumada was not involved in their creation process and although these characters had a participation in the storyline to some extent, some were later retconned from the continuity of the anime adaptation to keep it closer to Kurumada's manga. They range from support secondary characters to various ally or antagonistic factions.

Steel Saints

Suchīru Seinto (鋼鉄聖闘士)

Techniques: Steel Hurricane

The Steel Saints' armors were created by Dr. Asamori (麻森博士, Asamori Hakase), under commission by Mitsumasa Kido. Unlike the other Saints, the Steel Saints' powers come from their robotic armors and not from their Cosmo. They were added to the Silver Saint arc, before the Bronze Saints travel to Sanctuary in Greece, and make no appearances in the later arcs of the anime. Daichi (大地, Daichi) dons the Land Cloth, which is able to generate earthquakes. He was voiced by Mie Suzuki, in the original Japanese, and by Greg Ayres in the English version. Ushio (潮, Ushio) dons the Marine Cloth which is able to produce sound waves. He was voiced by Hōchū Ōtsuka and Chris Ayres. Shō (翔, Shō) possesses the Sky Cloth, which has the power of "sky waves", the ability to absorb an enemy's attacks from the air. He was voiced by Shigeru Nakahara and Mark X. Laskowski.

Caribe Saints

Karibu Seinto, Gōsuto Seinto (幽霊聖闘士)

Techniques: Phantom Dazzling Fist, Thunder Claw (Geist), Dolfin's Airflow Revolving Kick (Dolphin), Jellyfish's One Million Bolt Attack (also known as One Million Lightning Bolt Punches) (Jellyfish)

The Caribe Saints are a group of rogue bounty hunters hailing from the Island of Hell. They are Jellyfish (クラッグ, Kuraggu), Sea Serpent (シーサーペント, Shī Sāpento) and Dolphin (ドルフィン, Dorufin) and their leader is Shaina's protégée Geist (ガイスト, Gaisuto). They are sent by the Pope to retrieve the Gold Cloth, but none succeed or survive. Although they are also known collectively by the name of Ghost Saints, they are not to be confused with the quintet of the same name appearing in the first Saint Seiya theatrical release. They were voiced by Kazumi Tanaka (Jellyfish), Hideyuki Tanaka (Dolphin), Masato Hirano (Sea Serpent) and Chiyoko Kawashima (Geist).

Black Phoenix Saint

Ankoku Fenikkusu Seinto (暗黒鳳凰聖闘士)

Techniques: Black Illusion Demonic Fist

Phoenix Ikki's dark counterpart among the Black Saints, unlike Ikki's shadows, who were of a seemingly incorporeal nature. An underling of Django, he and the Black Three try to kill Ikki when the Saint returns to Death Queen Island, after the defeat of Perseus Algol, Kerberos Dante and Auriga Capella.

Black Three

Desu Kwīn Ankoku Surī (デスクィーン暗黒スリー)

Techniques: Sharp Fanged Black Demon's Wind Fist

A trio of Black Saints in Death Queen Island, subordinates of Django, who try to prevent Ikki from taking the Phoenix Cloth. The events they take part in and their designs are inspired by Black Saints drawn by Masami Kurumada in volume 5 of Saint Seiya.

Pope Ares's minions

Pope Ares

Āresu Kyōkō (アーレス教皇)

The identity given to Gemini Saga in the guise of the false Pope in the anime adaptation, said to be the late Pope's brother. In Kurumada's manga, Saga takes on the identity of the Pope himself and goes unidentified by name. He was voiced by Kazuyuki Sogabe.

Staff Chief Gigas

Gigāsu Sanbōchō (ギガース参謀長)

Staff Chief of Sanctuary, he is responsible for overseeing the execution of Pope Ares's plans to retrieve the Sagittarius Gold Cloth. He was voiced by Masaharu Satō.

Officer Phaeton

Paeton Sanbō (パエトン参謀)

Voiced by Hirohiko Kakegawa, he is Gigas's assistant and lieutenant. He is appointed to oversee the assassination of the Bronze Saints.

A Saint of unknown constellation and rank, henchman of the false Pope and Cassios's brother. Voiced by Masaharu Satō.

Sweltering Saint

Ennetsu Seinto (炎熱聖闘士)

Techniques: Fire Screw

A rankless Saint without constellation sent by the Pope to retrieve the Gold Cloth. Killed by Phoenix Ikki. He was voiced by Ken Yamaguchi.

Spartan

Suparutan (スパルタン)

One of Pope Ares's henchmen sent along Perseus Algol and Ophiuchus Shaina to assassinate the Bronze Saints. He fails his mission. Voiced by Shigeru Chiba.

Tarantula Arachne

Taranchura no Arakune (タランチュラのアラクネ)

Techniques: Tarantula Net

A Silver Saint sent by Sanctuary to retrieve the Gold Cloth. He is killed by Pegasus Seiya in Jamir. Voiced by Ken Yamaguchi.

Pavo Shiva

Pāvo no Shiva (孔雀座のシヴァ)

Techniques: Thousand Hands Kannon's Attack

The only anime-original Silver Saint to bear one of the eighty-eight constellations accepted by modern astronomy. Disciple of Virgo Shaka along with Lotus Agora, Shiva is an adept of Buddhism and relies on shingon chants and prayer to paralyze his opponents, while performing his lightning-fast multi-hit technique. He tries to kill Phoenix Ikki on Canon Island, but fails his mission and is killed by the Phoenix Saint. He was voiced by Shigeru Nakahara.

Lotus Agora

Rōtasu no Agora (蓮座のアゴラ)

Techniques: Lotus Blast Fist

A Silver Saint, disciple of Virgo Shaka, sent to Canon Island to kill Phoenix Ikki along with Pavo Shiva. Like his partner, Agora relies on a fighting style based on shingon chants which proves ineffective against the Phoenix Saint, who ultimately kills him. He was voiced by Takaya Hashi.

Odin's Asgardians and God Warriors

Goddo Uōriā (神闘士)

Odin's Asgardians appear in a story arc specifically created for the anime that takes place between the Sanctuary and the Poseidon chapters of the manga. This story arc ties into the Poseidon chapter, as it is revealed in its end that the God of the Seas was influencing the leader of the Asgardians to wage war on Athena.

Polaris Hilda

Porarisu no Hiruda (ポラリスのヒルダ)

Odin's representative on Earth and priestess of Asgard. She is possessed by the Nibelung Ring, which gives Poseidon control of her body, and sets her sights on world domination in the name of Odin. Her younger sister Freya contacts Saori and asks her and the Saints for help. Saori temporarily takes Hilda's place as the one who prays to avoid the melting of the Polar Ice, while the Bronze Saints fight the God Warriors to reach Hilda. Hilda is freed after fighting Seiya, who awakens the Odin God Robe and the legendary sword Balmung with the seven Odin Sapphires each of the God Warriors held, and returns to her gentle self. It is then revealed that Poseidon locked her spirit in the Nibelung Ring and was torturing her psychologically, making her watch her warriors die one by one. She was voiced by Mitsuko Horie.

Freya

Furea (フレア)

Polaris Hilda's younger sister. Being the first person, aside from Alberich, to notice the drastic change in her sister, she seeks out Saori and her Saints for help. She frees Hyōga from jail, who had been sent as a scout and then captured, and joins him, therefore being branded a traitor. She was saddened by the battles, as she did not want Merak Hagen, her bodyguard and best friend since childhood, and Cygnus Hyōga, her first friend among the Saints, to fight. She was voiced by Maria Kawamura.

Dubhe Alpha Siegfried

Arufa-sei Dube no Jīkufurīto (アルファ星ドゥベのジークフリート)

Techniques: Odin Sword, Dragon Bravest Blizzard

Said to be the strongest among the God Warriors and invulnerable like the legendary Norse hero Siegfried, he is Hilda's second in command. He is very loyal to her and seems to harbor deeper feelings for her. He initially does not believe the Saints when they say that Hilda is being controlled by the Nibelung Ring, however, after Poseidon's General Siren Sorrento arrives and reveals the truth, he switches sides and sacrifices himself to try to kill Sorrento. His armor resembles the dragon Fafnir. Voiced by Akira Kamiya.

Merak Beta Hagen

Bēta-sei Meraku no Hāgen (ベータ星メラクのハーゲン)

Techniques: Universe Freezing, Great Ardent Pressure, Odin Tempest Shield

Since childhood, he lived in the Valhalla Palace, training in the cold mountain peaks and volcanic caves of Asgard to protect Hilda and Freya. Jealous of Hyōga's relationship with Freya, Hagen fights the Saint, but is defeated by the freezing blast of the Aurora Execution. His God Robe resembles Sleipnir the eight-legged horse owned by Odin. He was voiced by Bin Shimada.

Phecda Gamma Thor

Ganma-sei Fekuda no Tōru (ガンマ星フェクダのトール)

Techniques: Mjölnir Hammer, Titanic Hercules

A poor Asgard villager who stole from the wealthy and gave to the poor. At some point, he was severely injured by the Valhalla Palace guards while trying to hunt near the Palace. Almost dying, he was forgiven and healed by Hilda, despite his harsh words about her reign. Feeling her pure and warm Cosmo and moved by her frustration about not being able to help everyone in Asgard despite being Odin's priestess, Thor swore to protect her as her God Warrior. Despite noticing that Hilda's Cosmo has changed, he fights against Athena's Saints, hoping that she will return to being the kind person she once was. After his defeat, he asks Seiya to save Hilda. His armor resembles Jörmungandr, the sea serpent, who faced the Norse god Thor at the Battle of Ragnarök. Voiced by Yūsaku Yara.

Megrez Delta Alberich

Deruta-sei Meguresu no Aruberihhi (デルタ星メグレスのアルベリッヒ)

Techniques: Amethyst Shield, Nature Unity, Flaming Sword

Descendant of a renowned family of warriors and scholars in Asgard, Alberich is famous for his intelligence and cunning, as well as his cold heart. His fellow God Warriors do not trust him and Hilda often lectured him. He was the only witness of Hilda's possession by Poseidon's Nibelung Ring and decided to take advantage of it to try to conquer the world. He defeats several Saints, including Eagle Marin, encasing them in life-sucking giant amethysts; however, Shiryū, with the help of his master Dohko finally defeats him. He was one of the slyest warriors, as he could have nature fight for him and used his intelligence to avoid fighting. He was voiced by Shigeru Nakahara.

Alioth Epsilon Fenrir

Ipushiron-sei Arioto no Fenriru (イプシロン星アリオトのフェンリル)

Techniques: Wolf Cruelty Claw, Northern Wolf Pack Fist

Fenrir was a member of one of the most powerful and richest families in Asgard. One day, when he and his family were hunting, they were attacked by a bear. Helped by wolves and abandoned by humans, he started to live with wolves and to hate humans. Later, he was chosen by Hilda to wear the Epsilon God Robe, which resembles the mythical wolf Fenrir. He dies fighting against Shiryū, when an avalanche falls over him and his wolves. He was voiced by Toshihiko Seki and Naoko Watanabe (as young Fenrir).

Mizar Zeta Syd

Zēta-sei Mizāru no Shido (ゼータ星ミザールのシド)

Techniques: Viking Tiger Claw, Blue Impulse

Sent to Sanctuary to declare war against Athena, he defeats Taurus Aldebaran with one hit, although it was later revealed that Bud helped him. He then goes to Japan to kill Athena, but is stopped by Seiya and Shun and instead returns to his country, to wait for the Saints to go there. He is defeated by Shun's Nebula Storm in the Valhalla Palace. Before his death, he reveals that he always knew about his twin brother, Alcor Zeta Bud, and that both he and his parents always regretted having abandoned him, but were unable to do anything in his favor. His God Robe has the appearance of a green saber-toothed tiger. He was voiced by Yū Mizushima.

Alcor Zeta Bud

Zēta-sei Arukoru no Bado (ゼータ星アルコルのバド)

Techniques: Shadow Viking Tiger Claw

Syd and Bud are twins who were born into a wealthy family in Asgard. Due to the local superstition that twins bring bad luck to the family, their parents were forced to abandon the younger child, Bud. A poor man raised him as his own, until one day, while hunting, Bud encountered Syd and the parents who abandoned him. Hilda made him a shadow God Warrior, saying he would replace Syd as the real God Warrior when Syd died. He held much hatred against his brother, yet he was convinced by Ikki that all of his actions, such as helping Syd defeat Aldebaran and later Shun when Syd was losing the battle, were due to the fact that he loved his brother but could not admit it. He carried Syd's body into the blizzard, where he presumably died, wishing that both of them could once again be brothers should they reincarnate. He was voiced by Yū Mizushima.

Benetnasch Eta Mime

Ēta-sei Benetonāshu no Mīme (エータ星ベネトナーシュのミーメ)

Techniques: Stringer Requiem, Light-speed Fist

Mime grew up with Folker, a powerful warrior who trained him against his will, since Mime himself wanted to be a musician. One day, Mime discovers that Folker had cruelly killed his true parents and, guided by fury and by Folker's taunting, he kills his adoptive father. After defeating Shun, he fights against Ikki and, throughout their battle, Mime realizes that Folker was actually a good man who had killed his parents unintentionally and taken him as his child out of guilt. Ultimately, Folker had provoked Mime because he wanted to die by his adopted son's hand, to make up for the fatal mistake that cost Mime his true family. Mime's last words to Ikki were that he wished that in a new life they could both be reborn as friends. He was voiced by Yūji Mitsuya and Tomiko Suzuki (as young Mime).

Other characters

Cepheus Albiore

Kefeusu no Arubiore (ケフェウス星座のアルビオレ)

The animated equivalent of Cepheus Daidalos, mentor to Andromeda Shun and Chamaeleon June. Although his background, personality and the events he takes part in are almost identical to those depicted in Kurumada's work (in the anime, he fights Scorpio Milo and Pisces Aphrodite, whereas in the manga Daidalos only fights against Aphrodite), Albiore's physical appearance, name and Cloth design differ from those of Kurumada's original character. He was voiced by Keiichi Noda.

Crystal Saint

Kurisutaru Seinto (水晶聖闘士)

Techniques: Diamond Dust, Freezing Fist

First introduced in the anime as Cygnus Hyōga's master and Aquarius Camus's apprentice, he is an honorable and righteous Saint. Pope Ares considered him a threat and forced him into his control with the Maōken technique. After an emotional battle with Hyōga, the Crystal Saint took his own life to keep Sanctuary from conquering East Siberia. After his death, he was gradually replaced in the anime by Camus as Hyōga's master and any events concerning him were disregarded to stay true to Kurumada's manga. His Cloth resembles a snowflake when not being worn. He was voiced by Michihiro Ikemizu.

Elene and Elder

Erēne to Rōjin (エレーネと老人)

A young girl and an elderly man from Canon Island, whose lives are endangered by the rage of Lotus Agora and Pavo Shiva. Saved by Phoenix Ikki.

Hayate

Hayate-gō (ハヤテ号)

A smart police dog who helps Seiya search for the Gold Cloth after Phoenix Ikki steals it at the Galaxian Wars tournament.

Jaki

Jaki (ジャキ)

A former Saint apprentice who fails to earn a Cloth and turns to a life of violence with the enormous strength he managed to obtain. He dies after falling off a cliff, trying to kill Eagle Marin. Voiced by Masaharu Satō.

Leda and Spica

Reda to Supika (レダとスピカ)

Techniques: Double Nebula Chain

Saint apprentices under Cepheus Albiore and former training partners of Andromeda Shun. They attack him and Chamaeleon June as the Andromeda Saint is about to leave for Sanctuary, to confront the false Pope. They were voiced by Kazumi Tanaka and Masami Kikuchi.

Ōko

Ōko (王虎, meaning King tiger)

Techniques: Wild Tiger's Gale Flash Fist

Dragon Shiryū's training partner and bitter rival. Voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue and Seiko Nakano (as young Ōko).

"Europe"

Eurōpē (エウローペー)

The only original character added in the Hades arc OVA adaptation. A girl from Rodorio village, who seems to be romantically interested in Taurus Aldebaran. Officially unnamed, she has been dubbed Europe by fans due to the connection between the character from Greek mythology and the Taurus constellation.

Characters outside the manga and the anime

Main articles: Saint Seiya: The Movie and List of Saint Seiya films

Considered canonical within the universe of Saint Seiya, as they were created by Masami Kurumada, these characters were not introduced in his manga, but instead in the first Saint Seiya film. They were also featured in the musical Saint Seiya: Super Musical of 2011, which is based on the same film. They are five former Saints, collectively known as the Ghost Saints: Southern Cross Christ (voiced by Ryūsei Nakao in the film and played by Yūki Fujiwara in the musical); Sagitta Maya, predecessor of Sagitta Ptolemy (voiced by Michitaka Kobayashi and played by Yūki Matsuoka); Scutum Jan (voiced by Keiichi Nanba and played by Takeshi Hayashino); Lyra Orpheus, predecessor of Lyra Orphée (voiced by Yūji Mitsuya and played by Yasuka Saitoh); and Orion Jäger (voiced by Yū Mizushima and played by Yutaka Matsuzaki).

Kurumada contributed to designing the looks of the God Warriors of Odin in 1988's Saint Seiya: The Heated Battle of the Gods, but had virtually no involvement in the creation of Abel and his three Corona Saints in 1988's Saint Seiya: Legend of Crimson Youth or of Lucifer and the Fallen Angels in Saint Seiya: Warriors of the Final Holy Battle. On the other hand, the 2004 film Saint Seiya Heaven Chapter: Overture was based on an original story by Kurumada. Since the discontinuation of the project, however, the characters and events of that film have since been replaced in the canonical continuity of the series by those found in Next Dimension.

Reception

In Japan, Seiya is the least popular of the protagonists in Saint Seiya, ranking 5th in the Bronze Saints character poll. Shiryū came in at first place in the same poll, Hyoga second and Shun third. In the technique poll, however, Seiya's Pegasus Meteor Fist ranked 1st.

Several anime and manga publications have provided both acclaim and criticism of Seiya's character. DVDVisionJapan criticizes the fact that Seiya takes beating after beating but gets back up every time. However, they praise his seiyu, Tōru Furuya, for giving the character a good array of emotions. Anime News Network comments that Seiya's voice actor for the English dub is unsuitable, that he enunciates strange words and does not sound at all heroic. They also criticize Seiya for being an underdog in all the fights. DVDVerdictReview.com describes Seiya as poorly developed, wholly characterised by his affiliations and connection to a constellation.

Shun is seen as the character with the most yaoi potential out of the five main Bronze Saints. Regarded as a "true walking caricature, this character was the most fragile and sensible, with fine traits, long hair, doe eyes and the most feminine armor of the group (with a nice 95B in guise of a breastplate in the anime version)". His chains are regarded as highly symbolic, viewed as a jewel (a feminine symbol) and a weapon of changing length that can become supple or rigid at will (a phallic symbol), which can be used for defensive or offensive purposes (the sexual ambiguity and seme-uke dichotomy) and represents the original myth of Andromeda, who was tied on a rock and offered as a sacrifice to calm a marine monster's wrath, which is regarded as sexual. In the section "Right Turn Only!" from Anime News Network, writer Liann Cooper described Shun's character as "prissy" and his fight against his older brother, Phoenix Ikki, as a plot twist "skirmish".

Mania Entertainment's Mark Thomas found Ikki to be one of the most interesting characters from the series, having liked his early role as an antagonist and his subsequent appearances as a partner for the Bronze Saints. Thomas also praised his powers, noting that he was "far too good for the Bronze Cloth" and that he was saddened with how Ikki disappeared during his fight against Virgo Shaka.
