India competed at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, England. It was the first time that India competed as an independent nation at the Olympic Games.

Three players, Harpal Singh (September 27, 1919), Rudolf "Rudy" Michael (February 4, 1925 – January 1, 1992) and Inderjit Saj (November 7, 1922 – June 13, 2000), were injured in pre-Olympics tour training matches and did not receive medals as they did not play in the tournament proper, although they remained part of the squad as no replacements were provided.
