"Email this user"

Yes, I have that enabled. Be aware that if you send me email, through that option or any other, I am free to do anything with such messages that I please. That includes publicizing them along with any identifying information they come with, not excepting headers, logs from mail servers, etc. A statement in your email claiming that you regard it as private communication and attempting to place limits on what I may do with it is legally not binding on me. If you want that sort of arrangement, first send me a request to enter into a non-disclosure agreement, and I'll let you know if I agree.

Handy stuff I don't want to have to find again

Another styletip ...

Quotations: allowable typographical changes

Although the requirement of minimal change in direct quotations is strict, a few purely typographical elements of quoted text should be conformed to English Wikipedia's conventions without comment. These include the following:

  • Use the style chosen for the article: unspaced em dash or spaced en dash.
  • Set apostrophes and quotation marks straight, not curly.
  • Remove spaces before punctuation such as periods, colons, and %.
  • When integrating the quotation into the grammar of a larger sentence, downcase the first letter of a quotation that is in upper case purely because it starts a sentence in the source (It turned out to be true that "a penny saved is a penny earned").

But generally preserve bold and italic face, and the variety of English.

Basics

I am a moderately well known consultant and seminar leader in the field of Windows device drivers, debugging, and general kernel mode development. I've been working with Windows NT device drivers since the October '92 Driver Developer's Conference. For a few years after that I was a prolific contributor to the Windows NT device driver newsgroups, and that work earned me an MS MVP (NT DDK) award for a few years, but the consulting/training business has taken too much of my time lately to continue those efforts. (And Microsoft decided that they would no longer have MVPs for driver development!)

Prior to my work involvement with the Windows NT family I worked for many years in similar areas of DEC's VMS operating system. While working for a DEC IHV/ISV I was responsible for the device drivers for a line of intelligent programmable front-end communications interfaces... some of which I later learned were still in use years later in Operation Desert Storm. I won several awards for various contributions to the DEC User's Society.

Before VMS I worked principally with HP's DOS-M, RTE-M, and 2000F operating systems. These ran on 16-bit minicomputers, the HP 2100 and 1000MX, classic load-and-store machines like many of the minis before the PDP-11. I also put in some time on the HP 3000 under MPE, and PDP-11's under RSTE/E and RSX-11/M.

MCTS for Windows Internals, for what that's worth. And General class ham operator.

  • Your right to a free press does not mean I have to give you free access to my press.
Corollary: Wikipedia doesn't have to give you free access to theirs, either.
  • Moving a page can be mildly disruptive. It should nearly always be discussed first (unless it is mandated by some policy). Heck, even if it is mandated, input should be solicited re the new name. After all, those who are watching the talk page may have been concerned with the page for some time and so might have some opinions worth listening to about what the new name should be, or if it should be moved at all, and reverting a move is sometimes not trivial. But official WP policy is that a page move is only slightly more deserving of concern than any other edit (inasmuch as anon editors aren't allowed to move pages).
  • New editors who come in with the attitude that "Wikipedia is all wrong and it must be fixed!", combined with a pattern of what I will here call "bristly" responses to any disagreement, tend to have short, unhappy careers here. See WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS.
  • If your belief requires you to assume that there's a vast conspiracy arrayed against you, you probably should re-examine your belief.
  • Sometimes, when it's you against many, it's time to consider that the "many" just might have a point. (see WP:1AM)
  • Some people who claim e.g. "ten years' experience" actually do have skill and wisdom commensurate with ten years' experience. Others seem to have had the same year's experience ten times over.

...then again, maybe not.

  • Wise words given to a blocked editor: "This absolute adherence to the idea that your interpretation of the rules is paramount
and everyone else's input is merely an obstacle to overcome is an accurate summary of how you ended up in this position."
    - Basalisk inspect damageberate 4 August 2013
  • "Any article about some esoteric techical gubbins is going to sound too technical to someone; we give context in the opening paragraph, which should be helpful to the non-electrical-engineer who runs across this term and may not want to know more" - edit summary by Wtshymanski, upon removing a "too technical" template

About fighting vandalism

  • Inspector Javert (or Zenigata) doesn't have a fun job, but somebody has to do it. Of course, some could also choose to not be Jean Valjean (or Lupin III).
  • Found on someone else's talk page, quoted by permission: "Early on, I came across a comment from someone high up in the WMF. He said if content creators all left, Wikipedia could go on for years. Information would gradually go out of date, but it'd still be there. If the vandal fighters all left, Wikipedia would be overrun in a few days by vandals, spammers, and trolls." - this edit by --NeilN talk to me 00:44, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
