About Torchy’s Tacos

[edit]

Michael Rypka and Bill Roberts opened Torchy’s Tacos in 2006 in the city of Austin, Texas. Rypka went to culinary school in Miami, Florida where he learned the necessary cooking skills he would use later on. He also had past experience in restaurant management. Roberts is no longer on the Torchy’s team, but while a part of it, he managed event planning and marketing. The duo opened up Torchy’s Tacos in a food trailer due to lack of sufficient funds. [1] The start was difficult with a house mortgage and maxed out credit cards, but with perseverance the taco joint took off. From many critiques came the restaurant’s slogan “Damn Good.” Today, Torchy’s Tacos operate numerous restaurants and one trailer park in Texas, and have even won several awards and positive critiques nationwide. [2]

Sourcing

[edit]

Torchy’s praises their partners for the products that give quality to their food. They trust in the people they do business with. They try to remain local with their products and ingredients, but if distance is how they will get the best food products and the responsible sources, then they will do that. To them it is all about being the best they can be. Casa Brasil Coffee, Maine Root Sodas, and El Milagro are the three partners of Torchy’s Tacos. [3]

Giving Back

[edit]

Torchy’s Tacos is huge in giving back to the communities they are a part of. They focus their aid towards areas in which company founders are particularly passionate. These include cancer research (MD Anderson Cancer Center), childhood enrichment (Make-A-Wish Foundation), and addiction recovery (Phoenix House). They are also volunteer their time and tacos for community causes. [4]

Environmental Pledge

[edit]

Torchy’s has taken a stand on being environmentally friendly. They have made a commitment to their customers and environment that they will constantly work towards improving their operations so they are impacting the environment in a positive way. [5] As of 2014, Torchy’s Tacos offers napkins, cutlery, and cups made from 100% renewable resources thanks to Eco-Products. Torchy’s restaurants are also created with tankless water heaters, low-flow toilets, and 40% reclaimed wood. Also, most of the oil used for frying is later turned into fuel for vehicles. They continue to build upon their environmental pledge. [6]

What’s on the Menu

[edit]

Torchy’s tacos are nothing of the ordinary. These tacos are loaded with any and every ingredient you could imagine. From pulled pork, chicken, queso, cilantro, avocado, onions, lime, corn, pico, green chilies, tons of sauce concoctions, one can order a taco to their personal specifications.[7] The menu also contains breakfast tacos, chips and dips, desserts, and an assortment of sides to go with their meal. Each month Torchy’s comes out with a taco of the month so the menu is always growing. [8] In 2013, Torchy's released a secret menu that is loaded with many more creations. [9]

[edit]

Torchy’s Tacos, as of October of 2014, has twenty-nine locations throughout the state of Texas. As of now it is not expanding out of the state, but Rypka states that if they were to expand it would be to the East coast where he has connections. [10]
