2nd Dutch Liberation of Gelderland (V)
[edit]The 2nd Dutch Liberation of Gelderland was a short war between the Netherlands and a Belgian-Spanish alliance, in the year of 1852, with military operations being conducted in the very north of Belgium and the whole of the Netherlands. The Belgian-Spanish alliance altogether had more military strength than the Dutch, yet they incurred more casualties. It ended with the Treaty of Breda, and resounding Belgian-Spanish victory, The Netherlands ceding Dutch Guyana to Belgium.
Causes Of The War
[edit]In the late 1830s, Belgium had conquered much of the Dutch mainland (most notably Gelderland) through a series of wars. In the 1840s, the Dutch had made an attempt to liberate Gelderland, but were repulsed, and forced to cede Dutch Ghana. At the turn of the 1850s, hostilities between the Belgians and Dutch began to flare up again. During this time, Belgium forged an alliance with Spain. Not long after, the Dutch sent a formal declaration of war to Belgium, demanding the liberation of Gelderland.
Military Operations
[edit]Belgium responded by launching operations all throughout Dutch territory, laying siege. They soon sent a call to arms to Spain, and the Spanish main force, led by Pablo Serrano, began to move through France. The Spanish army eventually reached Utrecht, where they were met by the main Dutch army, at the Battle of Utrecht. The battle was not decisive at its start, however, with time, and Belgian reinforcement, the Dutch were defeated, and the Spanish army began to lay siege to Utrecht. The Dutch army fled to Breda, where they began to siege the area.
