The Pearl-Qatar (Arabic: اللؤلؤة قطر‎) in Doha, Qatar, is an artificial island created to host a living, and luxury space for tourists, residents, and nationals alike to pursue activities and frequent a place that represents the Qatari heritage and tradition. The Pearl-Qatar is over 32 kilometers of new coastline, for use as a residential estate with an expected 18,831 dwellings and and 45,000 residents by 2018. Undertaken by United Development Company (UDC), The Pearl is also redefining Qatar as a destination of choice for discerning investors commensurate with the economic and cultural ambitions of the State as it positions itself to become one of the world’s most advanced nations. The Pearl is two-thirds the size of Gibraltar, an inspirational location that heralds a revival of fortune once again for these shallow waters of the Arabian Sea and is located 350 meters offshore of Doha's West Bay Lagoon area.

Etymology

[edit]

Since ancient times, Qatar has been famous for its pearling banks with its seabed and warm shallow waters, conditions favorable to the growth of pearl-bearing oysters and the creation of the finest pearls found anywhere in the world. Qatar was one of the major pearl traders of Asia before the Japanese introduced cheaper more affordable pearls just before Qatar's oil boom. Today, the same pearling banks are yielding a magnificent new treasure, The Pearl-Qatar, a Riviera style multi-billion dollar manmade island poised to become the most fashionable address in the Middle East and internationally, as its phased construction is completed over the next few years.
