I'm a historian and art historian. I'm a graduate (twice) of the University of St Andrews, and have also done vocational postgraduate work at the University of Edinburgh. I work as a historical/archæological consultant and lecturer/researcher and writer. My first degree was in Mediæval History, and my doctoral research was on the iconography of the Petrine era in Russian history painting. My main contributions so far have been expanding articles on the Aleramici:
- Conrad of Montferrat
- William of Montferrat
- Boniface of Montferrat
- Renier of Montferrat
- William V of Montferrat
- Judith of Babenberg
and on their friends and associates in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem; also on the troubadours. Conrad has been one of my favourite characters since my teens.
I have also written material on Patrick Ferguson's page, and on those of various of his family members, the Johnstones and Murrays. I am the author of his only modern biography, based on his personal letters:
Patrick Ferguson: "A Man of Some Genius", National Museums of Scotland, 2003, ISBN 1901663744
I'm also interested in the physionotrace and portraiture during the French Revolution, and in the iconography of Maximilien Robespierre.
I have published a range of articles on historical, art historical and literary subjects, and a few poems. I enjoy using primary sources in a range of languages.
