KZHK-FM, is an classic rock-format radio station in St. George, Utah. It is hosted by Jon Smith. The show has been on the air since 2005 and intersperses music and news with comedy bits, a diversive cast, celebrity interviews, listener call-ins, and live music performances.

History

Jon Smith is a lifelong resident of Utah. After spending time on Salt Lake's "107.5 The End", and as the Music Director for the famous KJQ, Jon moved to St. George to take on his own morning show in 2005. In 2005, Jon was promoted as a Music Director and moved to St. George Utah for The Planet, 94.1. This is where The Jon Smith Show was born. On September 1st, 2011, he seized the opportunity for a format change to the classic rock station of 95.9 KZHK where he remains.

Iraq War Coverage

Since 2005 Jon Smith has broadcasted through major world events including the continuing Operation Iraqi Freedom. He performed the task of broadcasting "The Jon Smith Show: Live from Baghdad", when he joined Southern Utah's Army National Guard’s 213th Forward Support Group, and 222nd Field Artillery team in Iraq. This was Smith's third time on the war-front. He was previously embedded with U.S. troops in 2008 and 2009.

Awards

Since moving to Southern Utah, Jon has been awarded the St. George "Key to the City" twice by the Mayor, who proclaimed a "Jon Smith Day" which is September 27th. Jon was dubbed a "Man of 10,000 voices" by St. George Magazine, and recently the Red Cross 2012 Community Samaritan Hero Award.

Jon Smith's banter with the Morning Show cast, jokes, and seemingly popular quality entertainment has resulted in thousands of interested listeners to frequent his work and swarm social media sites.

Morning Show Schedule

Opening Song

The show starts almost sharply at 6:00am with highlights of the day's show. Jon Smith banter's about the days events such as breaking news, current celebrity entertainment, planned segments, will announce scheduled guests and cast members participation for current calendar day.

Music, News, & Weather

Music from the standard lineup of Jon Smith's flagship station, KZHK, is played regularly during the program. Breaking news is broadcasted at the top of every hour followed by a current weather report, and traffic details concerning the area.

News Your Better Off Without®

"News Your Better Off Without" a segment that airs at 6:30am and 8:30am. Jon attempts humorous banter between himself and the cast mocking the odd news stories not covered in the daily media formats from current radio and television news stories of that day.

Showbiz Report

"The Showbiz Report", delivered at 7:30am and 9:30am, is an entertainment-news report featuring Jon Smith and on-air Producer Rheanna Bristol, as well as other cast members in attendance. The host highlights stories from pop culture and media, and with input from his colleagues, frequently mocks perceived hypocrisies and absurdities of public figures and the entertainment industry.

Impossible Easy Question

Impossibly Easy Question is a trivia played at 8:15am daily. The host gets two callers on the line and gives a simple question that some could assume are impossibly easy enough to get the question right. Once two callers are on the line, the host reads the question. The first caller to shout out their name with the correct answer is the winner and are awarded the prize for the day.

Intermission by Offspring

Intermission, music bit that plays in the middle of the morning radio program and theatrically exclaims "Intermission!". The host will sit back in his chair in a exhausted manner claiming, 'Talking for four hours is hard work!' This is commonly followed by the sound of soda drinks being opened near the microphone that spreads into the airwaves. After the forty two second music bit, Jon will then exclaim, "Okay! Back to work!" which is immediately followed by a classic rock hit as to suggest the host is continuing on with his grueling day on the job.

Celebrity Interviews

In addition to faux interviews, numerous real celebrities and sports figures have appeared on the show over the years. Regular visitors to the show include Bill Cosby, Will Smith, Dennis Quaid, Bret Micheals, Maroon Five, Howard Jones, David Hasslehoff, Mr. T, Apollo Ono, Shannon Miller, Jim Matheson, Wayne Newton, Sinbad, Alanis Morissette, and Sean Penn whom he called a jerk.

Morning Show Characteristics

• Studio Toys - Like Jon Smith's personal residence, or what he commonly refers to as the 'Jonderosa', the KZHK studio holds many of his favorite toys like rubber chickens, dart boards, nerf guns, and iconic KISS dolls. Kiss Dolls
• The Final Countdown - Jon's affinity for the '80s classic rock song by the band Europe led to a string of listener-submitted stories that would lead to a pun of the song title such as "Pine-Sol Outhouse", or "I'll Call Clowns Now" and give Jon an excuse to play it claiming that it's the best rock and roll song ever made. Producer Rheanna disagrees.
• Red Light - The red light is a literal physical feature that remains above the entrance door on the outside of the KZHK studio. It lights up to alert others when the Morning Show Host or any other Media Personalities are live on the air. When guests, cast members, or resource staff enter the studio with the red light on, he will instantly call out there name and put them immediately on the air.

Personalities

Jon Smith

Has an entire toy room valued at over $20,000, in his home that Dave The Mechanic refers to as 'Chick Repellant' for the reason that it is filled with GI Joe's, Star Wars Memorabilia, and a six foot air craft carrier directly in the center of the room.

Instrumental in the creation of the Chicken Big Mac currently being sold at large chain participating fast food locations.

Early in his career he was arrested twice during on-air stunts. The first when he was trespassing and the second he did a morning show stunt for Halloween and it was stated to have 'totally tanked'. In his disappointment, he called the cops on himself. It had been assumed that the Salt Lake City Police department were not at all amused.

Revived what some may believe to be an old folk tale within city limits believed to be called the Haunted Tunnel. Revival of this story has brought news crews, ghost hunters, and tourists to the location where they claim to have had mysterious encounters from other spiritual dimensions.

Holds an annual pass to Disneyland, collected over 15 years of Disneyland tickets and park maps, and boasts about being the one who visited Disneyland and Disneyworld in the same weekend.

Has a toy room in his home that contains G.I Joe's, Star War's valued over $20,000

Boasts about being a Star Wars Nerd that can kick your trash.

On first day at work on 95.9 KZHK, Jon participated in Office Bowling that resulted in over $500 in damage to the company

Hates Protesters

Producer Rheanna

• Lives by the motto 'Life Is Good' with her husband and five children. Together they enjoy Theater, Broadway Musicals, firearms, outdoor activities and spending time together.
• Sends herself gifts at Christmas, Valentines and her birthday labeled, 'To: Rheanna, From: Rheanna' because her Mother always told her it's better to give than receive.
• To get back at Jon Smith, Dave The Mechanic, and Sargent Dodge for being what she calls 'gross boys' she'll incorporate the words, 'uterus' and 'placenta' into every conversation to seek revenge.
• Has her own blog about funny events in her life that she secretly sneaks into Jon Smiths show articles. He has yet to discuss one on-air.
• Conditioned her four pound chihuahua to use the bathroom by the phrase, "Are you queer?" Whenever asked this phrase, the dog dances around in circles with much excitement until he is able to relieve himself. However, immediately regretted this decision once her three year old child used the same phrase to strangers whom the child saw attending to the restroom.
• Commonly walks out of the KZHK studio when the 'gross boys' talk crude or show segments get offensive. This also pertains to what Jon Smith calls his 'stripper music', and twenty second farting sound bits.

Sgt. Dodge

Joining the cast every Thursday is Sergent Robert Dodge, a recruiter in the United States Army. Sargent Dodge has had four successful tours in Iraq with no injuries. However, one visit to the gun range with Jon Smith, he accidentally shoots Sargent Dodge in the leg with an AR-15 where he sought quick treatment with no permanent injuries. They are currently still friends.

Dave The Mechanic

Dave is an automotive mechanic that works at Neilson Automotive in Santa Clara Utah. He joins the show every Monday to answer listeners questions concerning their automotive needs. Dave has been a member of the Jon Smith show since 2005. In the time since he started Jon Smith has only received seven oil changes from Dave despite the mechanics caution concerning correct engine care. However, Dave has fixed many items of unscheduled maintenance in that time as well.

Sgt. Craig Harding

Visiting the KZHK studio's on Tuesday mornings is Sgt. Craig Harding. Sgt Harding works with the St. George Police Department in charge of the St. George Motor Division. Like Dave the Mechanic, he answers listeners questions, explains the law, and has never had to arrest Jon Smith.

Mayor Dan McCarthur

Every Thursday morning Dan McCarthur, serving his third consecutive term as Mayor in the City of St George, keeps the community updated on city ordinance, traffic flow, community events, and current constructions zones to avoid. He commonly ends his message with a memorized poem that offers advice and cheer which Jon Smith seems to enjoy.

Jebidiah The Polygamist Weatherman

Jebidiah lives in Colorado City, Arizona. One particular day in the show he called the studio asking Jon Smith why he never gives the weather report for Colorado City residents and asked if he could give the report. Jon Smith agreed which brought fourth Jebidiah The Polygamist Weatherman. Jebs, for short gives a very simple and brief description about the weather using phrases like, "It's going to be sunny" and "Today will be slightly cooler than yesterday". These conversations often expand into Jebidiah's personal life and experiences he tells about taking his family to Las Vegas, sitting in the hot tub with his kids, or what he calls 'family time' by getting a Costco Pizza. Some believe Jebidiah to be a fun loving guy and Jon Smith gets listener requests of those wanting to meet him.
