Papke lost a decision to Frank Mantell on February 22 1912 in a bout which was scheduled as a title defence. However since Papke was over the middleweight limit for the bout he still claimed the championship afterwards. From 1914 to 1916 a version of the world middleweight title was fought exclusively in Australia. The champions of this version of the title were: 1914-01-01 to 1914-03-14 Eddie McGoorty USA 1914-03-14 to 1914-04-06 Jeff Smith 1914-11-12 to 1914-12-26 Mick King Australia 1914-12-26 to 1915-05-23 Jeff Smith USA 1915-05-23 to 1917-05-24 Les Darcy Australia. The significance of this version of the title is that Darcy was generally accepted as the best middleweight in the world at the time. Darcy died of pneumonia in 1917 and the Australian version of the title came to an end. | ||||

On July 27 1921 Wilson defeated Bryan Downey on a disqualfication. The Ohio Boxing Commission later overturned the referee's verdict and declared Downey the winner and new world champion. The New York State Boxing Comission declared their version of the world title to be vacant whilst the rest of the world still acknowledged Wilson as champion. Downey defended his "world title" three times before losing it to Jock Malone in September 1922. Malone lost recognition in Ohio when he lost a non-title fight to Lou Bogash in October 1923. | ||||
