Stylized text
[edit]The fact that other articles do something is not always indicative of the wisdom of doing a thing. A few years ago, we had an editor of articles on highways in the US state of California making changes that degraded the quality of a Featured Article so that it would match the other articles which weren't even Good Articles. I'm also reminded of a saying, "what is popular is not always right, and what is right is not always popular."
There are several reasons why the stylized text is not a good idea over a graphic.
- It puts an undue visual weight on specific text by making it a different color.
- We don't allow icons to appear mid-sentence per MOS:ICON, and the stylized text is essentially an icon.
- Not all browsers will properly display the coding in all cases. Printed copies of the article may omit the backgrounds completely, for example.
- Screen readers and other adaptive technologies will ignore the stylization.
- The text doesn't actually match the sign in terms of proportions and typeface, which the graphic is designed to be an authentic representation.
- The graphic I inserted has alternative text describing the sign that will appear if the graphic does not.
Of the other articles using stylized text or even marker icons mid-sentence, many are on topics from countries where English isn't a primary language, and in many cases, they're created using writing and editing techniques from other language editions of Wikipedia, which may allow such stylized text mid-prose. This does not mean those articles comply with our English Wikipedia Manual of Style. Imzadi 1979 → 00:51, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Serious Request has been reverted.
Your edit here to Serious Request was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline. The external link(s) you added or changed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9Goo9tdUm0#t=58) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. If the external link you inserted or changed was to a media file (e.g. a sound or video file) on an external server, then note that linking to such files may be subject to Wikipedia's copyright policy, as well as other parts of our external links guideline. If the information you linked to is indeed in violation of copyright, then such information should not be linked to. Please consider using our upload facility to upload a suitable media file, or consider linking to the original.
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page.
