Help for blocking lt.wikipedia.org

[edit]

Good evening, Mr. Adam Bishop, I wanted to ask you to help me in trouble Lithuanian Wikipedia. Behold, I got a little sick Tourette's syndrome, and sometimes I get angry and not in control of the words, and it happened there. I wrote a considerable criticism, and I told them back, "Bounce," and I was banned for 1 day. But then I was very curious, and I asked for all the details on Wikipedia, etc. And took me away, and to extend the blocking 8 months in. Then I began creating clones. But I continue to "excellent" edited by Wikipedia, in the articles, but then again I saw blocking the message, and angry. And I created the clone, created before 11, but anyway I edited, created 2 articles. (Because then I paid them not to develop). And then extend the blocking period of 3 years. And I very much want there the Wikipedia edited, so in every possible way I wanted to unlock. And I wrote in the e-mail, and everywhere, and tried to IRC, but not switched on, so in one word remained this situation. Then I created the English Wikipedia, and everything went well for me, I was invited to the "Teahouse" be paradise! And here all the other people do not like the Lithuanians, they are stubborn and wrong. And here I created, I do not remember any of their regions, many villages, perhaps 5 villages, 2 rivers, 1 lake. Maybe you can help in any way? Plus I created yesterday again Lithuanian Wikipedia account, I wrote what I do is, I opened my heart, and today still went and blocked User: Homo ergaster. And I do not know what to do. And I want and there and then edit the articles, maybe here I will become administrator ever. So HERE is hopeful. Thank you. P.S if you look at those who blocked me: Homo ergaster, and my account Lukas_GamingLT --L.ukas lt 13 --Talk 15:56, 9 January 2016 (UTC)Lukaslt13[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Raoul of Merencourt, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Blanche of Navarre. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Catholic-Hierarchy.org

[edit]

Hello. I noticed that you have edited a number of articles on Catholicism. A discussion is taking place as to whether the website Catholic-Hierarchy.org is a reliable source that can be utilized on Wikipedia or whether all references and information derived from it should be deleted. This topic is currently being discussed at the Reliable Sources Noticeboard [1]. As the website's removal as a reference will affect several thousand Wikipedia articles, I believe that the broadest range of opinions should be obtained before action is taken. Please contribute if interested.Patapsco913 (talk) 22:07, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Metal (music)

[edit]

Hello Adam Bishop,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Metal (music) for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Vinod 03:28, 20 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, Adam Bishop. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi Adam Bishop.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:46, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Trollee

[edit]

Re special:diff/574897779 I found a reference listing Nissae Isen (just made a page!) as a principal cast member and she also got an award nomination for MtK so I think you're probably right.

If we can't find any online sources confirming this then I think we could cite an episode directly, in which case I'd need to figure out the first episode Trolee appeared in. Although I'm limiting to checking whatever's either Treehouse On Demand or else checking upcoming showtimes.

There isn't a cast section for MtK and since there's a Canada/UK version, putting together a table would probably help let us know where we're missing actors. Ranze (talk) 07:07, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

March Madness 2017

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:23, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Adam
Thanks for your edit here the other day; I think the original hatnote was actually referring to a similar-sounding place in the Galilee, rather than the town now at the site where Ibelin was. It's pretty academic now, though, and it isn't necessary on a genealogy page (I've added the previous link to the dab page already) so I've removed it altogether.
I gather from your comments you added the family tree; is it worth putting lines in (like here)? I don't know if that'd make it easier or harder to read. What do you think? Moonraker12 (talk) 17:54, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

About vandalism on the article of Presidential Elections in Iran 2017

[edit]

Good evening Sir, I allow myself to report a persistent vandalism actions about a non user called Pahlevun (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) on the article about Iranian Presidential elections that censures informations about declared candidates without real reasons and even the information is verifiable and official.

This person has been warned and each time allows itself to delete only one declared candidate "Dr Hossein Homayoun Fard" who's official candidate at this election and who officially is registered under official institutions of Iran. So he has the right to be included as the other candidates on this article and "Pahlevun" erases his name when the article is updated.

Can it be possible to block his capacity of intervention on this article which is an information one and not a political tribune ?

I'm new on Wikipedia and I have many things to learn. And forgive my errors in english and also my errors in the form of writing also. (I'm not even english speaker at the base). Thanks as advance. Best regards. --TheSimorgh (talk) 12:21, 7 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@TheSimorgh: You have not provided a single reliable source that says he has done so. Verifiability is the Wikipedia policy you are ignoring and I will revert you every time you add it with no proper source. Stop labling me and edit warring. Pahlevun (talk) 13:01, 7 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Pahlevun (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) you're censuring public information about an election. Are you working for any public administration in relation with the elections to decide who must be in the list of candidates or not ? Are you up the Iranian Government who received Dr Homayoun Fard candidature by the way of Iranian Embassy in France in all respectful and legal forms ? You don't have any wright to censure information. Your interventions are censure and vandalism not more not less. I'll make changes each time you'll change it too. And contrary to what you're talking information is verifiable by the links I've put. First, the public anounce by the website of Ayyaran Group. Second, I give the link of Iranian Embassy in France that can confirm that Dr Hossein Homayoun Fard is officially candidate. So if you're more important source than Iranian Government I'm very curious. You're actions are violating ethics of Wikipedia. My informations are linked with official sources. If it disturbs you that shows that you're doing politic filtering and it's vandalism. I won't stop warning you and won't stop modify the article each time you'll modify it. I have time and you'll be tired before me count on it. I'm for freedom of expression and freedom of information what you're not and sensibly !. --TheSimorgh (talk) 13:25, 7 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Latin help

[edit]

Adam, if you have a moment could you check my translation/interpretation of the following passage? It is from document no. 50 in this collection.

which I translate as

This gift we make for the remission of our sins, namely Pedro Ansúrez and my wife Elo, and for the soul of Count Ermengol, who died in the castle of Gerb, and for the soul of his son, who is buried in Solsona, and his wife María, and this boy Ermengol the younger, that the Maker of the World give him victory over the pagans.

The main reason I am asking is that I want to be sure that there are three generations here: Ermengol who died in Gerb, his unnamed son, his unnamed sons's wife María and Ermengol the younger (who would be unnamed and María's son). It seems odd that they would not name the intervening son (who would be Ermengol V of Urgell, husband of María, Pedro's daughter). Is it saying that Count Ermengol had a son buried in Solsona and a daughter-in-law named María? Thanks, Srnec (talk) 23:45, 18 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Srnec, yes, that's correct - just some grammatical points, "quatenus" is a medieval way of saying "ut", so they're making the gift "so that the Maker of the World may grant" etc. "Istius pueri" must mean "their son", with the relationship that you mentioned (i.e. Ermengol the younger is the son of Maria and the unnamed son of Ermengol the elder). "Iste" is a weird word to use there though. It could also mean that Ermengol the younger is Maria's son from another man, or more likely since they share a name, Ermengol the elder's son's son with another woman...but I might be reading too much into it! It is as you say, three generations. Adam Bishop (talk) 01:26, 19 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I was wondering what work "istius" was doing. I found it odd that the charter avoids naming Ermengol V, although it twice mentions Ermengol IV and his death at Gerb and has no problem naming María or Ermengol VI. Maybe Pedro did not like his son-in-law. Srnec (talk) 23:49, 19 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

...Adam B., did you actually peek at my browser history, or am I that obvious? You totally nailed my work process on that French:English query on the RD/L. Your reply gets top marks for style and content, and you're evidently too much of a gentleman to have clicked on the Wikidata links I provided and scoop me on the en & fr corrections of label/description/alias. I've hastened to do so myself - Wikidata is hugely forgiving in providing laconic edit summaries, so it's all good. </blush> Are you supporting the continuance of the RDs? I've always figured I'm - intermittently, at least - on the sunny side of the signal:noise ratio, in that with most of my queries I'm honestly trying to improve an article or item, and I'd like to think it matters to a wider readership out there. I'm curious to read the discussion but admit I'm apprehensive. No matter what, it's always reassuring to read your contributions and know there are those who make Wikipedia (and so, the world) a better place. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 11:21, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I didn't realize it was you who translated it :) Working as a translator and proofreader makes it easier to recognize patterns of thinking in other people when they are translating. I didn't have a chance to check the edit summaries on Wikidata, but WordReference is one of my primary dictionaries in my job, so I know its quirks!
I'm very much pro-RD. I know we have collaborated on improving, and even creating, articles based on Reference Desk questions on several occasions in the past, so the Desks are clearly useful. I wouldn't bother reading the discussions, since nothing will come of them. My suggestion is to ban certain users from the Reference Desks, which in my opinion would solve all of the problems, but I know that won't happen either. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. User group for Military Historians

[edit]

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Select Survey Invite

[edit]

I'm working on a study of political motivations and how they affect editing. I'd like to ask you to take a survey. The survey should take no more than 1-2 minutes. Your survey responses will be kept private. Our project is documented at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_%2B_Politics.

Your survey Link: https://uchicago.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9S3JByWf57fXEkR?Q_DL=56np5HpEZWkMlr7_9S3JByWf57fXEkR_MLRP_bwuctROKiuEO1AV&Q_CHL=gl

I am asking you to participate in this study because you are a frequent editor of pages on Wikipedia that are of political interest. We would like to learn about your experiences in dealing with editors of different political orientations.

Sincere thanks for your help! Porteclefs (talk) 20:05, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A little help with Latin

[edit]

Hi @Adam Bishop:,, I have created a personal user award for contributions related to ancient Roman history. I have dubbed it "the Barnstar of Tacitus". Could you review my translation: "stella horreorum Taciti" Thanks. Informata ob Iniquitatum (talk) 16:39, 7 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @InformationvsInjustice:, I guess that would be the very literal translation! I notice that other Wikipedias don't necessary call these "barnstars" but have another word referring to another kind of reward. I bet the Taberna on the Latin Wikipedia could come up with something more appropriate. You can ask questions in English there. Adam Bishop (talk) 15:22, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ancient Greece

[edit]

Given your experience with the classics, would you mind participating at a CFD? I've noticed that many of our categories use "Ancient Greece" non-initially, and many others use "ancient Greece", so Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2018 July 5#Ancient Greece is an attempt to gain consensus for one or the other. So far I've gotten only two other participants, so it would help if you could offer an opinion. Nyttend (talk) 04:56, 7 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Another Latin question

[edit]

Salve amice,

Aiutum! I am struggling with the difference between evocare and devocare, evoco and devoco. I understand evoco to mean to summon, or lure. An evocatio was a ritual designed to "distract" a city's gods by a besieging army. But I find in Pliny's Natural Histories XXVIII ch.4, devocare is used for summoning Jupiter. Are the two interchangeable?

Evocatus is a veteran heeding the call to return to duty. So what would a devocatus be?

If you can help, awesome, don't feel obliged to respond if you can't :-) Informata ob Iniquitatum (talk) 04:48, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

They do seem to have similar meanings that could be interchangeable. They are both something like "call forth" or "call out", so it would be easy for the meanings to converge. "Devocatus" is a possible word but it doesn't seem to be a regular noun, just the past participle of devocare. The same thing happens with other words that can take de- or ex- as a prefix, like "deferro" and "effero", both mean bring/take/take away/take out etc. It does't always work though, sometimes they are the opposite! Like deficio and efficio. Adam Bishop (talk) 17:07, 13 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

On 28 October 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Robert of Nantes, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Robert of Nantes was "an old and venerable man aged eighty years" when he was imprisoned along with Louis IX of France during the Seventh Crusade? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Robert of Nantes. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Robert of Nantes), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of National Hockey League arenas, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Peoria (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hi,

I noticed your post in the Talk section of List of programs broadcast by Treehouse TV. I have removed several fake ones (an IP Address keeps putting them back plus someone has been adding shows that don't have an article and when you search them on Google it will link to someone's YouTube account with shows not appropriate for preschoolers. I will try to keep an eye on the article; this is one of the few articles I will try to keep up to date.

I just decided to let you know that someone is going to try to keep an eye on the article; I also requested for page protection. TheBlackKitty (talk) 00:07, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Good morning.

I contact you because I was banned from modifications on the French Wikipedia ! You'd like to know why ? Because I deleted the discussions on my own page and I put in the Infobox the flags of countries and cities, states, counties ... Some French administrators decided that it was forbidden or not recommended... Then Gemini1980 banned me... I find it unacceptable, this person uses his "power" and his fellow administrators too. I can not do anything against this. What should I do ? What can you do ?

We need you at Vicipaedia

[edit]

Hi Adam. Happy 2020. We have elected three new magistratus, la:Usor:Giorno2, la:Usor:Sigur, la:Usor:Andreas Raether. You can see the election results at la:Vicipaedia:Petitio magistratus. I hope you can give admin rights to these three for us -- thank you! I should add that Andreas Raether hasn't yet responded where it says "Responsum usoris Andreae Raether:". I have reminded him, no doubt he will do it any moment, and if you wait until he actually has done it you will be in fullest accord with the rules. Andrew Dalby 19:05, 10 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

He's written a word or two. All three elections are complete now, nemine still contradicente. Andrew Dalby 10:17, 11 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Factum est! I hope I did everything correctly (it's a pretty simple procedure, but I always have to re-learn how to do it each time!). Adam Bishop (talk) 15:40, 11 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I hope you don't mind that they elected a second grapheocrates. Doesn't mean you're not needed, as demonstrated by the fact that I'm currently under several doctors, hence sometimes absent from Vicipaedia. I intend to emerge, however. Andrew Dalby 09:23, 8 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No, I don't mind at all - I'm not very active on Wikipedia lately, in any language, so it's better if there's two of us! Adam Bishop (talk) 19:40, 8 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Another thing

[edit]

Hi Adam,

I noticed that you were one of the earliest to edit Jawaharlal Nehru's Wikipedia page. Since you are one of the earliest editors at Wikipedia, I wanted to get your opinion about the notability of Sharjeel Imam whose Wikipedia page I created recently but then that got deleted. I believe it would be easy to find 50 or even 100 news citations for him. It is related to India's ongoing anti-CAA protests. He can be compared to a few young students who became famous in the U.S. in the wake of one school mass shooting. I think this one was in Florida and one of the students is named David Hogg though he is not in the 'news' much these days and therefore the name escapes me. I would love it if you could put in a word on the deletion discussion or send a word to the Admin who deleted the Sharjeel Imam page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sachi bbsr (talkcontribs) 17:40, 5 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

List of your created articles that are in Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors

[edit]

I'm trying to make a dent in Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors, and a few articles you created have issues that I can't fix on my own. Basically, some refs linked via {{sfn}} and {{harvnb}} and similar have missing full citations or have some other problems. You can check these instructions to have error messages enabled (Svick's script is the simplest to use, but Trappist's script is a bit more refined if you're interested in doing deeper cleanup).

The following articles could use some of your attention

If you could add the full references to those article, that would be great. Again, the easiest way to deal with those is to install Svick's script per these instructions. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 16:31, 18 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Could you translate this clause? I think I know what it means, but it does not jive with how I read an author's footnote. So perhaps I don't know enough about 13th-century uses of praeter. Or the footnote is confusing. Thanks, Srnec (talk) 23:03, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! It all makes sense. Mongols indeed. Srnec (talk) 02:39, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Could you determine the age of this illustration

[edit]

Hello. I have noticed that the art style of this illustration is not even remotely similar to other medieval art: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dame_guiraude_supplice.jpg

The foreshortening and other aspects of the artwork make it seem to be more like modern fantasy art than anything else. I don't speak French, but the text seems to be modern French. I know next to nothing about paleography, but even the handwriting seems to be modern.

But, the file itself is classified as being in the common domain due to age. I very much doubt it.

I didn't know where to bring this up, so I found a list of people who said that they're professional historians, I started from the top of the list, and I found that you're active. Maybe there is a better place to ask. BirdValiant (talk) 13:49, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Solid Waste Management, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Crusader states

[edit]

Good morning!

An anonymous user has been randomly editing the numbers in the infobox on various pages related to the Crusades (Montgisard, Cresson and Hattin, etc) without actually replacing the sources and linking new ones. Said person is also seemingly replacing words (such as "cleric") out of various articles dedicated to what seems to be Muslim historical figures related to the Shia faith and seems to be motivated by personal political and religious beliefs..... The point I am trying to make is that this person seems more interested in vandalism than anything else and I am trying to understand why you are enabling such acts by reverting the pages back to the state he or she leaves them in when other users simply revert them back to their state pre-vandalism. (Jules Agathias (talk) 18:31, 13 April 2021 (UTC))[reply]

Hi Jules, I thought I was reverting the vandalism but apparently I didn't look closely enough, there were other edits that I missed. Sorry about that. Adam Bishop (talk) 19:26, 13 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Getting an editor to respond in a dispute

[edit]

Hello. I have two disputes with the same editor who keeps on reverting an edit. I, user: Marshal277, believe that content from a Washington Post story ought to be in this article. user: Meters believes that it should not be. The case involves a student who attended the school and was taught by a teacher, who then allegedly sexually assaulted her immediately upon her graduation, and after he allegedly had groomed her for years. Administrators at the the school found out about it and did not bring it to the authorities, even as that teacher was second in command at the school. user: Meters believes that since the event occurred after the student graduated and took place off campus, it should not be on the schools page. It may be early, but user: Meters is not responding. Here are the two relevant articles: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_Schools https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_School_at_River_Ridge

Here is the relevant section in dispute:

Sexual Abuse and Assault Allegations

[edit]

In June of 2021, the Washington Post Ran a front page story detailing allegations of sexual and physical abuse of children who grew up in the People of Praise. One story focused on an event alleged to have occurred in 2001.[1]

Dave Beskar

[edit]

According to a police report obtained by The Post, in 2001, Trinity School at River Ridge teacher Dave Beskar sexually assaulted a 17-year-old female student, Katie Logan, in her home. Beskar denies the allegation.

Logan said that in 2006, she reported the incident to Dean of Girls Penny Arndt. Arndt told police that she reported Logan’s accusation to the president of the Trinity Schools board at the time, Kerry Koller. Arndt also told police that she reported Logan's accusation to the current president of Trinity Schools Jon Balsbaugh in 2009. Balsbaugh said to the police that he did not learn about the accusation until 2011, after Beskar had left the school. Balsbaugh said that he did not report the accusation to the police because he thought Logan was 18 at the time. [1]

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

To brighten your day

[edit]

I was rereading an essay of W. H. Auden's ("The Poet and the City"), in which I noted this passage that might amuse you if you don't already know it:

But if a stranger in the train asks me my occupation, I never answer "writer" for fear that he may go on to ask me what I write, and to answer "poetry" would embarass us both, for we both know that nobody can earn a living simply by writing poetry. (The most satisfactory answer I have discovered, satisfactory because it withers curiosity, is to say Medieval Historian.)

Vicipaedia

[edit]

Hi, Adam. I intended to write to you on this page before applying the security rule on Vicipaedia, where you haven't edited for some while now. I realise that I failed to do that, and I'm sorry, though I believe you would have received my emails.

Anyway, although your sysop tools on Vicipaedia are suspended for the present, you'll always be welcome to return. All you need to do is to ask, e.g. on the Taberna or on my talk page. I find (because Justin has just recently asked me to do this) that restoring admin rights is a much simpler job than suspending them :) Andrew Dalby 14:32, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Andrew, yes I did see your messages and e-mails - I actually forgot about renewing/restoring the sysop tools, so it's no problem at all, we can leave them suspended for now. If I need them back I will certainly let you know! Adam Bishop (talk) 15:36, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Audita tremendi

[edit]

Hey there, I saw that you were one of the first and only major contributors to the Audita tremendi article wayyyyy back (so cool to see that you're still active all this while - kudos!). Hope you don't the mind the fact that I sort of blew it up and started from scratch (I was mainly concerned about the wholesale copy-and-pasting of the full translation, which is most likely copyvio, as well as the lack of inline citations). I don't have access to that particular book by Riley-Smith though and it would be much appreciated if you'd like to add anything from there or whatever else currently needs adding in the article. Also did a bit of work on Quia maior if you're interested and I have half the mind to slowly rework all of the major "bull" articles that need reworking. Cheers, KINGofLETTUCE 👑 🥬 00:51, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't mind! I hadn't looked at that article in awhile and I didn't even realize someone had copied in the entire translation. I don't have the Riley-Smith book anymore (although I can grab it from the university library). I'll see what I can do. Thanks for taking on these articles! Hey adam! I have got question

[edit]

About the source I have added in siege of jerusalem 1187, it should have its Wikipedia page I think because it was talking about another battle for jerusalem between salahdin and richard, what do you think? R3YBOl (talk) 05:20, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi R3YBOl, the book that you were using, "Islam Instrumentalized", is not a very good source for the crusades. First of all, it's mostly about modern economics. It doesn't really have anything to do with the crusades or medieval history at all. Second, I can tell just from the numbers that the author is not an historian and the book is not a history book: there's no chance Richard had an army of 700,000 and that Saladin killed 300,000 of them in one day, and this couldn't refer to the siege of Jerusalem in 1187 anyway, since Richard's crusade arrived in 1191. Richard and Saladin also never fought a battle or siege in Jerusalem. Third, it's a bit difficult to see what the author of "Islam Instrumentalized" has done because the quotation marks and citations are a bit strange, but he's actually quoting (and disagreeing with) a different book, "The Colors of Violence: Cultural Identities, Religion, and Conflict." That book also seems to be quoting someone else, but I'm not sure what, since it doesn't cite any source...so basically, neither of them are reliable sources for the Siege of Jerusalem or the Third Crusade. This is actually a really good example to help us remember that just because something is written in a book, it doesn't mean it's a good source for Wikipedia. Adam Bishop (talk) 12:44, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, Thank you for your response and help, Have a good day R3YBOl (talk) 14:25, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
