Spam on Dennis Rader

[edit]

I see you were removing spam on Grand Canyon -- If you would, please check out Dennis Rader where a woman has readded what she admits is her own blog to the article like a zillion times recently and especially today. Trying to block on 3RR and give her a clue that what she's doing is wrong, but Nunh-huh and myself are out of reverts so we can;t remove it without going over ourselves. Map request

[edit]

Interested in doing one of your excellent maps for Shoshone National Forest? It's the largest and most comprehensive article on any National Forest and is significant as it is the first N.F. in the U.S. and one of the first in the world. No obligation of course, but if you are so inclined, your contribution would be highly appreciated. Happy editing!--MONGO 18:46, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, that's good news! There is a vague map on the article page courtesy of the National Forest if that may help you template it. I fear that even if I had the software you have, I would make a mess due to my limited graphics ability. There certainly is no rush, so whenever you have time and don't hesitate to ask if there is anything I can do for you.--MONGO 04:36, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thanks for your comments about the New York City page. I've taken your advice and put it on the Talk page there, please comment and let me know what you think about the photos the way they currently are and they way I arranged them in the edit. I feel pretty strongly that the edit was a positive one and can get the article a little closer to featured status. Omnibus 01:56, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You Main Page draft

[edit]

I like your draft. Your biggest obstacle will be to activate the picture of the day. I noticed that your picture of the day is a static page, but the real thing needs to update every day automatically. Do you have a plan to fix this? For any draft to be approved, it needs to be be fully operational. Go for it! 12:26, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You commented on the wrong draft...

The draft was altered by someone who I asked to fix a couple things, though he executed the fixes to the old draft and posted that. I've incorporated his fixes into Draft 5, and it is waiting for your reinspection. Go for it! 22:41, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Class=

[edit]

Where are classes defined? In .CSS files?

I've been going over the Italian main page source code, and I can't find the classes that are in there defined anywhere.

When you pull the Italian pages into the English WP, the boxes turn out rectangular instead of round. I'm thinking it's because the classes can't access their definitions. Is this correct?

Re: Portal:Browse

[edit]

Because you're duplicating the discussion on several pages without clearly directing users to the right place. Portal talk:Browse is for discussion about the appearance and function of Portal:Browse, not for discussion on portals generally. Wikipedia talk:Portal is where such discussion takes place. A sub-page of WikiProject Usability would not do because a) it is not involved with portals, and b) WPT:P is already a known discussion place for portals (see {{portaltalk}}).--cj | talk 02:40, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

2006 Canadian election map

[edit]

Hey, cool map on the Canadian federal election, 2006 page! Just curious, would it be possible to make similar maps of the major population centers (e.g. Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal), since they are not displayed very well on the map? Ikh (talk) 19:21, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. Maybe later this afternoon. --Aude (talk | contribs) 19:23, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just FYI you have spelled the BQ "Bloq" instead of the correct "Bloc" - Jord 19:38, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. It's now correct. --Aude (talk | contribs) 22:26, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Another thing. Could you please upload the map in PNG format and change the links pointing to it? JPEGs do not work well for diagrams, such as maps. If you could upload an SVG version as well, that would be even better (MediaWiki, the software that runs Wikipedia, doesn't support SVG fonts properly, so please link to the PNG version). Andrew_pmk | Talk 20:54, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The .jpg's have smaller file sizes, though I now have uploaded .png versions too. With other maps, I've tried uploading .svg format with no luck due to formatting problems and fonts. --Aude (talk | contribs) 22:26, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Cool map, I just have a problem with the key. The #'s should be between the boxes instead of on the boxes. Makes it very confusing. You should also use intrevals of 10 as it would be more detailed, and you would actually be using some of the colours in your key. -- Earl Andrew - talk 01:04, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. I changed the legend. The colors are more of a gradient (0-100%), with not all colors explicitly on the legend. So, I got rid of the boxes and just put gradient bars. Let me know if you think this works better. Thanks. --Aude (talk | contribs) 01:58, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Much better, although there does remain the problems with the lack of city maps. Also, the inset for Toronto has been vertically squished. -- Earl Andrew - talk 04:05, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great work on the maps, however I don't see the Independent's riding in Quebec. Anarchist42 00:58, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A little late to the praise party about the maps, but one late suggestion to add to your to-do list. Earl Andrew did a phenomenal job in Canadian federal election, 2004 map gallery of doing maps based on each of the riding groups we agreed to carve the country into a few years ago (and, interesting, we've proved to be rather good when its come to guestimating politico-cultural fault lines. Um, go us!). Earl's maps have since cropped up on the pages linked to from the below template

...and keeping that whole page-series up-to-date with the current election is something of a n outstanding goal at the moment. While I've no doubt you're a busy guy, can you add this particularly puppy-eyed beg for you to consider working your magic on region-by-region maps? The Tom 01:39, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page Drafts

[edit]

I've added links on each draft to all of the other drafts, it's really the only way to make comparisons. If you think this is stupid then let me know, otherwise I'll keep it up. hydnjo talk 03:42, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's a good idea. Though, it might be easier to maintain with a template. So, the links are now in Template:Main page draft interlinks which is inserted at the top of each draft. Thanks. --Aude (talk | contribs) 03:59, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Umm, do you know how to put a "box" around the text to kind of set it apart? I don't know if that can be done in a template. :-) hydnjo talk 04:21, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just tried a box, but not sure it looks great. I'm sure someone else will come along and tweak it. --Aude (talk | contribs) 04:29, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Geesh! You're about a million miles ahead of me. I finally got around to goin' around to replace my text with your template and.... again... again thanks. hydnjo talk 04:38, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. It will be much easier to manage when new drafts are added, and others withdrawn. --Aude (talk | contribs) 04:41, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I was having a problem keeping up and it was getting difficult to make comparisons so I criticized the folks (hard workers) for the missing the missing links. It was a time of contention amongst them so it just kinda got lost in the dustup. But by tonight I said screw it and added the links myself - I thought I was going to get yelled at. Thanks for your wonderful support and making the template which will certainly encourage its continuation. :-) hydnjo talk 04:50, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The reversion war continues between the search box and the portal matrix. You mentioned something about trying to make a header with both. What reversion war? Ec5618 and I? I just wanted to minimize collateral damage, Ec5618 was straight reverting and losing some of the edits. I added the searchbar myself, manually. You can see the difference here:

Participant alert regarding Wikiproject on Advertising

[edit]

The Wikiproject No Ads, created as a backlash against the Answers.com deal, has served an important function in providing a space for users to express their disagreement with the Foundation proposal. While the current controversies about userboxes raise questions about political and social advocacy on Wikipedia, there should be greater flexibility regarding advocacy about Wikipedia in the Wikipedia namespace. Reported and linked by Slashdot and other press sources as a unique and spontaneous occurence in Wikipedia history, it has apparently had some impact as, despite being scheduled to begin in January, not a peep has been heard about the trial and proposed sponsored link since the deal's controversial announcement months ago. Currently, however, there is an attempt to delete the project or move it off Wikipedia altogether. Since the Foundation has provided no additional information and has not attempted to answer the specific questions that participants in the project raised, it is unclear if the Answers.com deal has been abandoned or simply delayed. Until the situation becomes more clear, I believe the group should still have a place in the Wikipedia namespace. Sincerely, Tfine80 00:04, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - thanks for your help with the vandalism of that image. The user was an anonymous IP address who had previously been warned for vandalism. I blocked him/her for 48 hours. [edit]

I'd like to help with this, but I'm not sure how to help. It should be possible to generate a list of pages which are not redirects automatically - I think there is a column is_redirect or something. I'll ask one of the toolserver mavens... JesseW, the juggling janitor 21:19, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
I've used Wikisign to come up with a list of 1000 Wikipedia pages that are not redirects, and are not subpages(i.e. having a slash in the name). Unfortunetly, it only goes up to List of in the alphabet. I'll run another one to get the next thousand... JesseW, the juggling janitor 02:12, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
I've got all of them(less than 3000...), and I've put them on a subpage: User:JesseW/WPindex. I have presumed GFDL for your image so that it wouldn't be deleted. Could you place the copyright tag of your choice on it? You mentioned it was from the commons? Can you give the link for that maybe? gren グレン ? 17:19, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You do great work

[edit]

Hello Kmf164. You have done great work across a wide variety of articles, including the hard work of adding photos and maps, which helps to improve the overall appearance and usability of this great resource. I think the project benefits greatly from your participation. I think you could do even more good for the project as an administratior. As far as I can see in your contribution history and talk page history, you have always "played nice" with others - which is a very important consideration for the adminship, in my view. I think one of the most important roles of the administrator is to set a good example for other users, and I think we should recognize the fact that you are doing this today.

Administrators also have access to a few technical features that help with maintenance. I don't know you well enough yet to know for sure how much use you would make of these tools, but I am very confident you would not abuse them, and you are quite likely to find them useful in your work here.

Please look over the administrators' reading list and how-to guide, as well as the guide to requests for adminship. If this looks like something you are interested in, then please leave me a note on my Talk page and I will formally nominate you.

Best regards - Johntex\talk 05:45, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Km, that is great news that you will consider adminship. I think the tools are handy and that you will make some good use of them from time to time. Even if you only use them a little, so long as you only use them wisely (which I am sure you will) then there is no harm in having the tools in your hands.
I think it best if the nominator is around to watch over the nomination in order to update the tally, help respond to any weirdness that comes up, etc. Obviously the candidate needs to answer questions posed directly to him/ber, but sometimes it is best if the nominator responds if there is something unusual such as a personal attack, or a charge of sock-puppetry in the voting, etc.
Unfortunately, I will not be around much for at least 1 week, possibly 2. Therefore, I really posed my suggestion to you at something of a bad time. I apologize for that. If you don't mind, I will get back with you when I am really around, so that we can start your nomination off on a good note.
With regards to the questions, please see last time I nominated someone for the 6 questions I would pose to you. Johntex\talk 02:47, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia namespace index

[edit]

I was going over the list and tested it via ctrl-f to search for key pages. There are a lot of key pages missing. None of the VfD pages came up, RfA is not on there, no "three revert rule", no Signpost, nor "deletion process". Of the terms I searched for, I did find Village Pump, Featured Articles, and Featured Article Candidates. But since so many came up missing, I stopped and decided to write to you. I don't think we're going about this in the right way. Working on an incomplete list may be counterproductive. --Go for it! 09:23, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All those pages are in my complete index, (e.g. User:Kmf164/WPindex-s has signpost). The User:Kmf164/WPindex-alpha page just includes the most popular pages, determined by the page_counter variable in the database. I'm not entirely sure how this is calculated in the database, if/when it's reset, or what. There may be some issue with page_counter to explain why Signpost and some other key pages aren't in the 1000 most popular list. I'll look into it. --Aude (talk | contribs) 17:43, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. I didn't make the distinction before. How many pages are listed in User:Kmf164/WPindex? --Go for it! 05:08, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review request for New York City

[edit]

Hello Kmf - You've done a lot of work on the New York City article, so I thought I'd alert you that it has been selected for peer review. With some editing for concision (making the "skyline" section a daughter article on NYC architecture instead of including it in the main article, for instance?), this article should be ready for featured status renomination. Your input would be great. Wv235 21:57, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

September 11, 2001 Attacks

[edit]

Hey there, thanks for responding in the discussion page. I agree that the st911 link should be on the alternative theories page, but i also think that if not the whole site at least the first major article on their site should be a link available here. As cluttered as the list of external links may seem to be already, there's, i think, so much support for the beliefs of the 9/11 commission in the article that readers might appreciate an easy and direct link to a rebuttal which seems pretty thoroughly researched. I'm not sure if you've seen it yet, but apart from a few places where i could have done without what i felt like were opinions it seeems bizarrely solid to me. Maybe you could have a look and see what you think? Holigopoly 11:53, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see you've spotted this person advertising on laptop-related pages. I have just removed a link from his user page. Is this kosher? Also, can you block him? He's had three warnings. What do you think? Nelson50 19:41, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

After I gave the user the one warning, they stopped. If they come back and keep spamming, despite warnings, then they could be blocked. As for removing links from their user page, I generally won't do that (especially, if it's an established user witha good track record). According to Wikipedia:User page guidelines, "You are welcome to include a link to your personal home page, although you should refrain from surrounding it with any promotional language." However, this user has done nothing but adding the promotional link, and be disruptive. This IP has a history of vandalism, and blocks - most which are for 24 hours or less, consistent with Wikipedia:Blocking policy. See User talk:Repartee for evidence of suspected sock puppetry. --Aude (talk | contribs) 21:29, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You may want to keep an eye on Mjal. Take a look at his contributions, they fall under two categories, admin votes and petitioning admins to unblock 198.20.32.254. Seems odd to waste so much time. BTW, I thought that it was decided to block that particular IP until July? Also it seems User talk:Repartee and the socks have been effectively taken care of for now too. Good job. Crime

[edit]

My to-do list is a long one and I regret only just getting round to crime itself. It has been annoying me for some time. Any and all contributions would be appreciated from someone who actually cares whether the pages make NPOV sense or not. I debated whether to throw out the U.S. classification and had more or less decided to leave it (if only so that the whole page was not completely replaced). Feel free to pitch in. David91 17:02, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your knowledge would immediately fit into the framework of the Chicago School, Environmental, Rational Choice and Left Realism because ecological/situational crime analysis (albeit by many different names) has always been the supposedly key policy that will enable better policing and structural design to reduce crime. Back in the 1980s I helped on several several spatial analysis exercises to measure burglar movement patterns, correlating police and court data. People were were all agog because of the new-fangled computer power that we could bring to bear, but the police on the ground thought it was all a big joke and, in a way, they were right because better maps did not help them find their way through an investigation. Useful as a policy-making tool though. I wish you the best of luck in adding to your knowledge. David91 02:39, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

First, sign your name when you're posting on people's talk pages. Secondly, don't demand responses from admins after they've cleaned up an edits. Try to be courteous. Thirdly, your edits to the ice hockey article were a disaster and can be seen as vandalism. I would strongly suggest you preview your work first, or practice editing in the sandbox before making sweeping changes as you did to the aforementioned article. Thanks. PATH station names

[edit]

Hey, regarding the naming of station names:

I've been reading the PATH talk pages and I noticed that the only real reason that you did not change the station naming format from "Station (PATH station)" to "Station (PATH)" was for conformity to the New York City Subway articles. Lately, WP:NYCS has changed its policy to one that is similar to your proposal, partly in response to a post you left at Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject New York City Subway. (Okay, the agreement was more or less between me and one other person, but we were the only ones discussing.) I have been going through subway articles, renaming them to the format "Station (Line)", without the unnecessary "station" suffix.

Just thought I'd let you know, in case you were still interested in renaming the PATH articles.

I don't think a range block is in order. This is small scale vandalism for the most part. Sometimes it takes awhile to detect their edits, but since they can't resist defacing our user pages, eventually we catch and revert them. I decided to just indefinitely block all the logged in users since they hadn't done anything but vandalize anyway. They've exhausted WP:AGF and haven't actually contributed anything, so blocking on sight should be the rule of thumb for them from now on. –Abe Dashiell (t/c) 15:59, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering about getting to version 1.0 with a short article about each victim, then leaving just the "tributes" part unprotected (but patrolled) and, as you suggest possibly migrating content back to en: over time or simply having links and/or redirects set up. E.G. en:John Xavier Doe -> Sept11:John Xavier Doe, or en:John Xavier Doe -> en:Sept 11 Pentagon Victims#Lists of victims refers to Sept11:. Rich Farmbrough 10:06 1 April 2006 (UTC).

I finally responded to your query about surging glaciers. I added some sentences in the section about Alaska on my last few edits, and responded on the talk page to your comments. I think we tried to stay away from much talk about surging glaciers as they don't seem to have much relationship to climate I don't think....at least that is what Peltoms stated...and they also don't have much to do with glacier advance or retreat on a climatological study. Let me know if I answered you question or if you think I need to add more detail.--MONGO 10:26, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
