Oh yes :) We need to translate it, just like for instance Stortinget 2005-2009 was some months ago. It is useful information, suitable for Wikipedia, hard to find outside of Wikipedia and to a certain extent countering systemic bias. Punkmorten 11:17, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to the Military history WikiProject!

Hi, and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Starting some new articles? Our article structure guidelines outline some things to include.
  • Interested in working on a more complete article? The military history peer review and collaboration departments would welcome your help!
  • Interested in a particular area of military history? We have a number of task forces that focus on specific nations or periods.
  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every military history article in Wikipedia.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask one of the project coordinators, or any experienced member of the project, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! Kirill Lokshin 11:43, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Horses and complex systems

Thanks for your contribution to talk:Laminitis. I saw your impressive list of interests and contributions; I share many of them, but I'm so busied about horses that my time is almost gone... my work into wikipedia (en.wiki and mainly it.wiki) is only a part of my web work about (I've a couple of websites and a forum too). Some remarks: 1. horsemanship in a aphazard mixture of ancient, unbeliavable exact intuitions (Xenophons; Kikkuli), of recent intuitions supported by some very good scientific evidence (dr. Strasser; J. Jackson; so-called "natural horsemanship" and "natural communication") and lots of personal undocumented opinions and retained ideas. Firing about is just at its beginning. 2. I presume, many of your interests (just like mine) have a common ground: the new science of complex systems. I think, you'll add it at your list as soon as you'll take a look at. 3. Did you ever read "The art of controversy" by Schopenhauer? Very interesting, for anyone interested to POV.--Alex brollo 13:31, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

New article about Horse hoof

I worked on a new Horse hoof article (there were hundreds of horse-related articles into en.wiki, but none about horse hoof; when speaking about diffcult topics as laminitis, something basic is really mandatory!) I also took a look (with some editing) to Nail. Take a look, please, to Horse hoof article - it's a very rough one, so far (mainly about Eglish, not so much about content, I hope...) Thanks!--Alex brollo 05:27, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Help with AutoWikiBrowser

Hello - I've fallen prey to pedantry/obsession, here, with the fact that most Greek derivations of dinos are linked to 'Greek language' instead of 'Ancient Greek'. I started sorting them but it would be a life's work, to check them all manually. I haven't done enough with AWB to be able to enlist its help. Can you help me to do so (assuming you agree with my proposition in the first place!)? By the way, just peeped at your SuggestBot list (I had one today as well) and wondered how you managed not to receive any dino suggestions :-) ??? - Ballista 05:29, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ballista!
An excellent question. In this situation, here is what I would do: Try to think backwards. "How am I going to fix all instances of this phrase?" The solution: Use the "what links here" page (works great for ALL disambiguation) for Ancient Greek. Show the first 500 results. Then use your browser (edit>find on Internet Explorer) to find any instance of the partial word "saur". Right-click any "saur" you find and open in a new window/tab. Edit the article.
You could use AWB, too. AWB can do a google/wiki search and pull up all instances of of the word "Greek". You can refine the search by... I don't have AWB on this computer, and I forget the name, but on the second tab in the middle, there's something like "include if contains:", and then add the word "dinosaur", or "ignore if article does not contain the word:", and add "dinosaur". The third tab had a "find" field. After starting the process, add the word "Greek" to the "find" field, and then hit search each time you pull up a page. I've been able to use AWB to google/wiki search terms like "to+it's", pull up a list, ignore all "to+it's" on User pages, and then use the 'find' field to find all instances of "it's", so they could be corrected if wrong. In theory, your example should be the same, but I don't have AWB in front of me. I only use it at work, because my home PC doesn't meet the minimum requirements.
Hope this helps! :)
--Firsfron of Ronchester 06:17, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
Forgot to add: I was surprised, too, when SuggestBot didn't pull up any suggestions for dinosaurs for me. Then I kinda realized SuggestBot only suggests articles the user hasn't already worked on. For dinosaurs, that would be a very short list, if there are any at all.--Firsfron of Ronchester 06:20, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
Actually, thinking it over, it might be best to google wiki the search terms Greek and dinosaur ("Greek"+"dinosaur"), skip the 'ignore' field, and seach the term Greek. Hard to say, since I don't have AWB in front of me, but some combination like this should work extremely well. At any rate, good luck, and good night! Or, rather, good morning in your corner of the world. :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 08:11, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
Alright, well, I tested the settings on AWB today, just to see, and if you set Google Wikipedia to "dinosaur"+"Greek", set the Set Options tab to ignore if contains Ancient Greek, and find Greek on the third tab, it works perfectly, filtering out all bad results. I was able to do five articles with no problem, in about 1 minute. I guess I'll leave the rest to you! (There were 300+ results). :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 17:57, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the Barnstar!

I'm not even sure what I did to deserve it, but I do try to be kind, whenever possible. It's impossible to build an encyclopedia when there are hurt feelings or tense situations. I'm here to build and have fun, nothing more. I'm grateful for the barnstar, and so I thank ye very kindly! :) Happy editing, --Firsfron of Ronchester 18:05, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Image review/comment

Thanx for reliable & prompt response, as ever! Yes, I fully expected the comments on background and didn't realise I could do anything about it. I have Photoshop 7.0, I think, but have never used it - any tips welcomed.

There are a lot of tutorials on-line; you'll be able to find plenty on Google, Ballista. Photoshop isn't something you can learn in a few hours, though. I've taken many digital imaging classes as part of my computer science degree, so if you feel you can't get a nice, clean look, let me know and I can have a go. But good luck, and I hope you'll be able to get some nice results. :)

I'll have a go at it, myself, while you're 'off air'.

You don't want to wait for what the rest of the team has to say? Maybe they'll think the images are quite suitable as is...

Heaven knows why I saw fit to cut off Utahraptor's tail! Megadangerous trick in real life, I would imagine.

Bwah! Yes, well, the image is still better than one of our current pictures of T-rex, where both the head and the tail are cut off...

I can crop the Utahraptor foot.

That would be cool.

I'll put up the other 'Tyranno' & 'Edmonto' stuff!, when I get time, so you can take a critical look (I had real problems selecting one of the 'Edmonto' shots, as they all suffer similar problems, which you have kindly neglected to 'rub in').

Nothing a little Photoshop can't easily fix, Ballista.

Yes, 'Pachy' is the real thing - lazy caption.

I figured, but did want to double-check, before it ended up on the wrong page.

Don't know why I goofed on the spelling of Coelacanth.

I only noticed because I was comparing your image to the existing ones on the Coelacanth page. It's a common enough misspelling to warrant a redirect, so plenty of other people have misspelled it, too.

One day, I'll try to get better shots of 'Tyranno' skeleton & Iguanodon's 'hand'.

Is there really a need? The Iguanodon one can be fixed in Pshop, and we already have several pictures of T-rex skeletons.

Thanx again for your help. - Ballista 08:06, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

No problem. Thanks for taking so many awesome photos. These will be great! *rubbing hands together in anticipation*--Firsfron of Ronchester 08:29, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
P.S. Are these uploaded to Meta/Media, or just English Wikipedia?--Firsfron of Ronchester 08:29, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Hey Ballista, I won't need you to post these anywhere else to photoshop them. I plan to work with them tomorrow, if that's alright. I have Photoshop CS2 at work, although it's not much different from Photoshop 7. I plan to only edit maybe 5 or 6 of them. The rest are quite nice as it is. The advantage of having these on the MediaWiki Commons is so that people on the Wikipedias in other languages can also use them for their dinosaur articles. When they're on the Commons, any Wikipedia language edition can use them: the software is amazing, and doesn't require any change in the link (in other words, there's no difference in how you write the link when you're editing the page; you don't need to add any fancy code, just the same as you would for a picture on our English Wikipedia). The additional photographs of Cetiosaurus bones are a big plus. Cetiosaurus has one of the shortest articles on WP, and clearly needs some filling out. I'm so glad you took these photos!!! Are you hiding any others? ;) I'm not sure what the copyright status is of the three prints. I'll try to check into that today.--Firsfron of Ronchester 20:19, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

You're a good man, Firsfron! Go for it! I wonder why we have such resounding silence from the rest of the Project - is it time differences? - Ballista 20:22, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Well, Dinoguy did leave a few messages on your image page. I expect Sheep will surface in the next day or two. And I'm sure eventually one or two others may pop up. It's the weekend, and some may be off enjoying it. I've noticed Mondays seem to be when the project is most active.--Firsfron of Ronchester 20:28, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
You mentioned on the image page other images of Pachycephalosaurus and Edmontosaurus, and manus images of T-rex. Any chance you might add these to your image page? I think the full-length Ed, the Ed head, and the skull of Pachy are quite useable, but wonder if perhaps there aren't other pictures, particularly in the case of Pachy, with which we might supplement the articles. In other words, "more, please!" :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 19:28, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Hi Ballista---You mentioned going back to the museum for more photos. Really, there's no need. We have tons of great ones right here. We've got a really great side-shot of Pachy, I only asked if you had more because you said you had others. There's no need for another trip! Same goes for Edmonto and T-Rex. And, no matter how many photos of Utah you take, it won't grow feathers. So there's no need for another trip. I was just asking because you said you had more. Anyway, sorry for the misunderstanding, --Firsfron of Ronchester 00:40, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

P.S. I've put up one of the photoshopped photos on your photo page. What do you think? *Nervous* More work, or is it ok? I've done a few others, but not the whole six like I promised.

New shots #5 and #10 are both really good. If there's room for more pictures on the T-rex page, #10 should go up, and #5 is an absolute must, IMO. I'm so glad you included these!!--Firsfron of Ronchester 05:35, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
      • Thanks for 'immediate' feedback - you're sooo positive, it's great to work with you. Did you see my comment above, in last but one thread, ref. your editing of Velociraptor shot? - Ballista 05:38, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
        • Sorry, I did get your note, but in my excitement over the new pictures, I forgot to properly respond. I plan to use your suggestions on the image page to finish off the Velociraptor image tomorrow. Thanks for the continued suggestions. About being soo positive: it's easy, when you like your fellow contributors. It's also easy, when you realize these new photos are so much better than outdated pictures from 1923 we've been forced to use in many cases. Sure, the old prints are neat from a historic perspective, but we're not building an encyclopedia from 1923. This project has been hamstrung from the beginning by outdated photos, which do not affect other WikiProjects that can claim Fair Use. So you better believe I'm enthusiastic about a huge new batch of full-color modern photos! :)--Firsfron of Ronchester 06:01, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

New images and old

Hey B! So, I've added a few photoshopped images to your two pages. Your new photos look good, and the only one I adjusted was the dark Scelidosaurus. I brightened it a bit, removed distractions, and also created a close-up of the arm. Scelido is one of my favorite dinosaurs. I'm not sure what you'll think of the adjustment. Yes, the ichthiosaur should go somewhere; it's great! I fixed the glare on the Cetiosaurus humerus, and on the Eustrepto head. What do you think? I cut off the head of Veloci and stuck it on a separate image. If it's dangerous to cut of Utahraptor's tail, I guess it's also dangerous to try and behead Velociraptor! ;) I still plan to finish the original Veloci image, but I ran out of time, today. Similar to the skull of Velociraptor, I also did a cut-out of the Mosasaur, but didn't have a chance to upload it tonight. I figure if the Velo skull is found suitable, I could do a few others. I tried to place the "improved" photos side by side with the originals, so we could easily compare them. They looks side by side in my browser, but I'm not sure what browser you're using, so if I messed up the alignment, I apologise in advance. I guess I'll have to work on the rest tomorrow, 'cause I'm just about ready to head home tonight. Thanks again for: 1. The awesome pictures 2. The opportunity to fiddle with them. --Firsfron of Ronchester 04:18, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

New pics from Dorset

I've uploaded four pics, from the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre - please find on User:Ballista/images/Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre June 2006 - I hope you can brighten the Sceli skelington & edit out distracting objects? Do we want the others, anywhere? The Ichyosaurus is quite good but not a dino! - Ballista 19:33, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Amazing work - I had seen the mods to the 'old' photos (are they really old already?) and only a few minutes ago had left my response/appreciation - not yet looked at the 'Charmouth' page but shall do so as soon as I've ploughed thru' my 'watchlist'!. Thanks for all your help - when do we start uploading? Any news of Sheep? - Ballista 04:27, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
    • Now studied all the mods - looking great - really cool that extraction of Velo's head - actually, on mature reflection, probably less dodgy amputating the head, as that would tend to pre-empt retaliation! I NOW really regret not getting a close-up of Sceli's horn stump, at the Charmouth Centre - it looked great on the mounted specimen - any chance of a worthwhile edit to show that? Anyway, I feel a bit handicapped, as my 'zoom' button has disappeared from my camera, necessitating prodding deeply with a wooden toothpick to change the zoom setting - that's a little coarse, to say the least & it's not possible to monitor the adjustment as you do it. Oh well .... - Ballista 04:52, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
    • P.S.: I've credited the edits to you, on all the modified images. If you agree that format, can you add it to any others you do, in case I forget to catch them all?

Hey Ballista! I'm taking a bit of a break from my college algebra homework, and figured I'd see what was up on the Wiki. As usual, you're already on top of things. I'll try to address everything you've mentioned above, but if I miss something, feel free to kick me. 1. Did you let the group know about the Heritage Coast pictures? I don't think they know about them. I'm sure they will want to see them, although I don't see a problem with any of them. I'm really thrilled we've got Scelido now. 2. I'm glad you're happy with some of the current photoshops. I'll continue to make modifications, but I'm definitely done for tonight! :) 3. I haven't heard from Sheep. Did try to e-mail him, but he hasn't activated his e-mail on Wiki. 4. I guess we can start uploading any time you're ready. Dinoguy, you, and I are the only ones who left comments. As long as the photos meet what the three of us have decided, there's no reason to delay, I suppose. Any that still need work can be left on your two pages. Are you uploading them to Commons, or did you decide against it? If you did decide against it, then there's no more uploading needed. 5. Yes, I can easily do a close-up of the horn-stump, but what do you mean by "horn-stump"? Yes, I'm dense. 6. Sorry about the toothpick. You take some nice photos anyway. 7. Yes, I can add my name to the credits. I just thought it seemed "cheeky" (there's no good American equivalent for that word) of me, for you to go out, spend money in museums, and spend lots of time taking the photos and doing all sorts of field research, while I sit in my office and get co-credit. It didn't seem right, so I left my name off. But now that you've added my name to each picture anyway, it just seems like that's causing you extra work... I can definitely add my name, so you won't have to. 8. I guess that's it! Happy editing! :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 07:26, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

I trust your judgement. Feel free to upload at any time. :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 08:06, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Latest OUMNH images

Those are great! The earlier Coelacanth is better, I think, but IMO the others don't need any modification, and could go up (with the approval of the rest of the team, of course). Sweet! :)--Firsfron of Ronchester 00:23, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the lastest batch, Baliista. They still weren't all up last night, so this is the first chance I've had to see all of them. I'm assuming that really is all of them...? There are so many great new ones! The pterosaurs, and the new Ichthiosaur paddle, and.. so many others.

Many times, your new pictures have eliminated any need for me to rework the images. For example, the new Megalosaurus display image means I won't need to lighten the old image. Your new Velociraptor image #4 is probably suitable as is. I've left comments on the relevant pages. Aside from still wanting to do some skull cut-outs for Ornithomimus and (fixing the dark) T-rex, and maybe a cut-out for Iguanodon's hand, I guess I'm close to complete, except for one glare removal and one text-on-glass removal. Re: Scelidosaurus' 'head horn': isn't that just a scute?--Firsfron of Ronchester 15:32, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

How cool! I have spruced up Scelidosaurus and Ornithomimus, much nicer. Now were they all from OUMNH? cheers Cas Liber 09:09, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

PS: When I went to Uffington it was really gloomy and misty - quite atmospheric but lousy for photos.Cas Liber 09:09, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Florid? (Humourous)? Huh?

What's with the "steady on the (humourous) outbursts spawn" on the WikProject Dinosaur talk page dude? I don't think I've said or done anything that should concern you. Please feel free to answer on my talk. Thanks, Spawn Man 10:04, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

ref. uploads

Thanks for all the thoughtful comments on the 'new' page - very much to the point as ever. Yes, you said you trusted my judgement and now I blew it! I took a chance on Utahraptor, as Dinoguy seemed kinda resigned about the anatomical failing & there was no pic up there. We'll have to see what storm blows up now. - Ballista 16:47, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

The pages are looking great, Ballista. Keep those images coming! :) I would like to remove the bit of red text from the third Cetiosaurus image, and did add a table so the three images are roughly even, but the other pages look great! Thanks for all your work. Dunno what will happen with Utahraptor, but the rest are brilliant. --Firsfron of Ronchester 19:26, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Any chance you'd be so good as to remove any finished pictures (as in, pictures on their appropriate pages) so we can reassess what's left? I'm sure you've still got some great images that haven't yet been added, but it's hard to tell with just so many pictures on the three pages. Don't get me wrong: I'm not complaining about so many pictures, believe me! :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 20:42, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
GREAT JOB on Cetiosaurus layout - I look fwd to future demon image-editing. - Ballista 19:31, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Remove uploaded ones? Can do - yes, I see the point - may be not tonight, but I'll try. Sorry to disappoint but there are no more pics in hiding! - Ballista 20:47, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Hee! I'm not at all disapointed. I was just beginning to think you had a never-ending supply. What with two trips to the museum, and a trip to the center, we've got a sudden bounty of photos. I will edit the third Cetio bone, hopefully later today. Then I'll have a look at the "head horn" on Scutello, and.. whatever's left. I've lost track. Yes, sleep... I'm just sure there are images we're overlooking because there are so many good ones. OK, take care! :)--Firsfron of Ronchester 20:55, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Oh! Shrinking works, too! Yeah, great idea. Now we can see what's left. I don't know about you, but that helps me.--Firsfron of Ronchester 21:00, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

False edits to Belgium

We need to have a talk (uh oh can't be good)

I know you really enjoy editing & uploading photos onto dinosaur articles, but some care must be taken! Some of your photos are out of focus/in bad light/irrelevant (choose 1 or more). Other times, you just place them in the most akward locations, such as all in one section. Take some care to carefully plan out where they will go or where they will fit. Don't just plonk them anyhere k? The ones which aren't that good, don't put them in. Think of it like a piece of cake. You've just eaten a buffet meal & you're sooo full. But everyone else is eating cake, so you want some. You don't need it, but just cause it's there you eat it. Or think of a bad picture as a toy you never use. You never use the toy, so your mum wants you to throw it out. You plead that you do play with it, but you never do. If a picture is bad or is overcrowding the text, throw it away or don't use it. It will save everyone time & overall, make the article ten times better. This was a friendly reminder from your friendly neighbourhood Spawn Man! Thanks, Spawn Man 00:01, 22 June 2006 (UTC). P.S. Kids, eat your veges!

Just so you know, Ballista, the images Spawn Man is talking about are, for the most part, not even yours. I guess he didn't look beyond the current edit history, and ended up leaving a note on your page about photos from previous edits. Two of the four "bad" pictures are old photos that have been on the page for months. Another is the side photo of the pes (foot) of T-rex, which Spawn Man is somehow counting as a "double", even though it's clearly not the same picture, and shows the foot from a different angle. The other images were apparently too close together for his taste, which was easy enough to fix, and didn't warrant a rude note on your page, IMO. I'm not sure which ones he thought were "irrelevant", as he only provided seven examples, three which were "too close together", two which were not uploaded by you, and one which is a "double". I left a note on his talk page, and I hope he'll do a little more research before leaving notes on people's pages about "bad photos".--Firsfron of Ronchester 01
05, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
Can't you read? Obviously not. I knew 2 of the photos weren't Ballista's!! I only gave you all the photos I deleted because you didn't specify that you only had a problem with me deleting Ballista's photos. If you had said, "I have a problem with you deleting Ballista's photos, ont anybody elses", I would have only given you Ballista's photos.
2nd, how many angles of a T rex foot do you need? It was cluttering up the page & looked almost exactly the same.
3rd, I'm rude? Your letter was very abrasive & bad mouthing me behind my back along with creating new rules about nominations, is not becoming. As I said, if you have a problem with the way I run "Spawnistan", then get out of the country! Goodbye, Spawn Man 01:47, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
I can read. Your two original messages say Ballista's images are "bad", "out of focus", "irrelevant", etc, and say nothing about other editors. You only added that in later. How many angles of a T-rex foot do I need? Two would be good, to illustrate the foot from more than one angle. I've created no "new rules" about FAC nomination. It's there, right on the page, for anyone to read. Only those who can read, though, will see it. And as I'm not in "Spawnistan", your final comment is just odd.--Firsfron of Ronchester 02:20, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
I don't lie. "Spawnistan" is a metaphor. Because your brain functions are too highly wired at the moment lil boy, I will explain it clearly. If you don't like the way I run myself (or do things), then, (& I'm putting this simply ya know), you can go jump in a lake. Simple? I thought it would be. Lake=Body of water surrounded by land... Jump=Leap, make feet leave ground using brain connections... Simply=Simple. For simpletons. Easy... Hope this clears that up for you... Spawn Man 02:26, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
Your message at the top of this page says Ballista's images are "bad", "out of focus", and "irrelevant". Since they are no such thing, I can only assume you need a new monitor or you're not being truthful.--Firsfron of Ronchester 02:37, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
And I believe you're being an arse, but hey, I cope.... Spawn Man 02:39, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Copied from Spawn's talk page: Good Morning from England. Thanks, Spawn Man for taking an interest in my images. I had hoped to avoid any objection to my uploading a significant number of pictures onto WP almost simultaneously, by consulting the Project as a whole, both on the project page and on the collaboration page, before doing so. I had some responses from Dinoguy, Cas Liber and Firsfron. There were some constructive negative comments made about some of the pictures, which was useful in preventing them going up. Generally, however, the comments were positive. Some of the pictures were posted for comment for almost a week. Another time, please try to avoid this sort of retrospective action, by contributing to discussions at the time, prior to any alterations being made to articles. As it is, I had fun taking the pictures. They are posted on WP for everyone's benefit. They are then commended to the Project editors and to the other members of the editing WP community, to do with as they see fit. No sweat if your opinions are not the same as others. That's Wikipedia. I would have waded in on this discussion earlier, had I not been asleep (UK time). I shall continue to work, as before, by consultation with the Project. Good idea if we all do, to avoid adversarial encounters. So much to do, so little time - why waste time on disagreement? - Ballista 04:28, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Sorry you came back to a mess. Spawn Man was temporarily blocked for making personal attacks. I'm glad the block was short, as he does have some good edits under his belt. I agree with your post immediately above, and hope the project can just move on. --Firsfron of Ronchester 04:43, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Aye to that! - Ballista 04:46, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Cable restored

My cable is finally back as my cable company finally decided to pull its head out of its arse. I guess after two weeks the stench finally became overwhelming. Anyway, I am back, have no fear! Sheep81 02:09, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Grrrreat! - Ballista 04:08, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Picture:

On the Velociraptor article, it has been requested that this article be removed in the article's FAC. However, I think it is a highly needed picture. Is there any way you could photoshop out the glass exhibit line going through the picture & lighten it up significantly? It would save the picture & get velociraptor featured... Thanks, Spawn Man 23:57, 22 June 2006 (UTC). P.S. I'd do it, but I don't have photoshop..

-yick! I put it on Protoceratops page too...Cas Liber 03:28, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Nice copyediting on the velociraptor article BTW... Spawn Man 05:06, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Uffington

Yeah - first time I went was late November or early December, got pub trans and tehn hitched there - cold and misty. Was getting dark and I was musing that it was a hell of a long way to anywhere when a car drove by and I hitched a lift rigth into Ealing (grandma's house where I was staying).

I was musing on uploading them to the White Horse and/or Waylands Smithy pages to show place in different light.

I also have some photos of Leeds Castle all snowed under with lake frozen.. Cas Liber 06:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

congrats

Hi - couldn't help noticing the new userbox - congratulations on so many edits. - Ballista 18:52, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Hee! Congrats on 3778 yourself. :)--Firsfron of Ronchester 19:03, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
Hey, thanks for your latest sweep-up on AWB. That was cool. I also haven't forgotten about the last few images on your sub-pages. I plan to take care of whatever's left tomorrow (Iguanodon's thumb, and...?). My home PC's too old to comfortably use AWB, but tomorrow at "work" I plan to use it to add taxoboxes to a few dozen articles. I've found it's really easy to add taxoboxes that way. Thanks again for... well, everything. Happy editing! Firs. --Firsfron of Ronchester 05:32, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Stuck in a Leeds Castle in winter image, I have another on the Commons Leeds Castle category site... Cas Liber 07:29, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi

Good to hear from you - it's great knowing someone's out there! I wasn't worried about languishing images - don't want to overdo things. However, I have plans for more photos ..... - Ballista 05:39, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Woah. That's really cool. Just don't overdo it and get WikiBurnout! :) Firs. --Firsfron of Ronchester 06:18, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Dino eyes

you shouldnt be so shy about changes. sometimes one is right sometimes one is not. the best way to learn is to talk about it and discuss it. ... plus i also think the vertical slit eyes look cool. but i use it mustly in dragons wich are out of subject here :) so remember.. be bold, LadyofHats 07:24, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

    • here is something for you. :) try to smile and try again.

Probactrosaurus

Hi - Info only: remember we were 'talkin' about articles on dinos, in which the word 'dinosaur' did not appear in the text? - just found another - Probactrosaurus (now expanded over 1kB & 'dinosaur' now appears twice, just to make sure!) (Also expanded Sinusonasus, while I was 'at it'). - Ballista 14:21, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Of course I remember, and good catch!--Firsfron of Ronchester 16:02, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Guiting Power

You seem to know a lot about Guiting Power, so I was wondering if you know about Jamie Kane. Especially;

What is this building on Critchford Lane? [1]
Is it called Radburn Manor?
And is it to do with drug retox?
Was it near Strip Lynchets or Lynes Barn Farm?

http://www.mobiletechnetworks.co.uk/livesignal.shtml

Because in the game one must find a building using triangulation and it is username ahlund47840 and password templogin and you have to look for this building. Is it something important, like http://www.radburnmanor.co.uk/ ? Sorry to bother you but I thought it might be of interest. Some pictures of the building in question would also be interesting if you have any.

You seem to know a lot on this subject!! Have you checked out any of those links? --Quentin Smith 13:57, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Promised new images

Please take a look and cast your expert eye - User:Ballista/images/Natural History Museum, London - comments welcome - lot more to follow, but I'm only getting little pockets of time to do this work, at present. I'll upload some each day for a bit. - Ballista 05:29, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the note, B. I was actually checking out the images as you uploaded them. Thanks again for some wonderful images. There are some that are really dark, but others, like Troodon, are perfect the way they are. That Troodon shot looks amazing. Although there are many dark shots, you're right: many/most can be easily salvaged. A few just need some cropping, which I know you can do yourself. You took a ton of pictures, and it's... a bit overwhelming. But overwhelming in a good way! :) I don't think there's such a thing as too many. More comments as I begin taking closer looks...--Firsfron of Ronchester 05:42, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for taking so much trouble, trawling thru' all that stuff and making such thoughtful and worthwhile comment. I've fed back to you, for information etc. I'm sorry that there were so many technical faults but I don't think my level of photographic skill, with a basic camera, is sufficient to overcome some of the obstacles as set. If you have any tips in that direction, I'd go back again before the end of the year, and have another go. I might have been able to do something a bit better with my old Praktika TTL camera, with 100% manual control but it broke long ago - Ballista 05:01, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
Dude! You're the only person I know who would actually apologise for travelling all over England, visiting museum after museum, spending what I can only assume is a small fortune on entrance fees, and getting us a hundred pictures to use! You're just too modest, you know that, B? Sure, some of these images are dark, and a few won't make it for various other reasons, but I can assure you dozens of these new ones will go up. Thank you.--Firsfron of Ronchester 05:28, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
Yes, the gallery format is much better. Good idea. I'll work on more of the images, and incorporate your other editing suggestions, after work today.--Firsfron of Ronchester 15:48, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Nice one - uploaded teh tail pic to diplodocus page (nice). Other diplodocus image a bit dark. Do you want me to lighten it or can you? Also very timely contemp pic of iguanodon...Cas Liber 08:01, 4 July 2006 (UTC) I meant the nice Iggy model. The diplodocus you lightened needs to be a bit more contrasty. I am so jealous, Syndey's museum has a Giganotosaurus only - everything else is being renovated.. cheers Cas Liber 04:42, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

I'd kill for even a Giganotosaurus! ;)--Firsfron of Ronchester 04:46, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Look out! Firsfron's getting dangerous .... :-) - Ballista 04:50, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Just how big is that Oxford Museum!?!? It seems like very time you go, you come up with 50 new photos, including dinosaurs you'd never photographed. Are they adding new exhibits every week? It's impressive, but at the same time, a bit intimidating! I guess we've hit the jackpot. :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 08:04, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
Hold your horses - I think I've plumbed the depths now, pretty much. It's just that, as one looks with more attuned eyes, one sees more. Also, visits tend to be time-limited, owing to real-life commitments. Anyway, it's your fault for salvaging suspect images so well! No - they've not done new exhibits, as far as I know, but there is still a large area cordoned off ....... One can only guess. - Ballista 08:22, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
I guess you live near Oxford, then, to visit the museum weekly? So many great images! As usual, of course. At least this museum's better lit than the other one: probably not much work needed with this batch, although I haven't looked at all the photos: I was watching as you were uploading them, but I skipped ahead, as usual, and probably missed some shots. OK, this message was a bit useless, but I'm hitting "Save page" anyway. ;) --Firsfron of Ronchester 08:33, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
Yes, not a million miles from Oxford. Far from useless, your messages - you have a way of keeping everyone motivated! - Ballista 21:37, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

RE: Geologic formations

Nice work - I was already toying with the notion of rounding up these guys - there's a bit of work going on on these lines within the WikiProject Dinosaurs (Wikipedia:WikiProject Dinosaurs/formations). There is a bunch of Formations without articles (i.e. giving ugly red links!). I was going to try to assemble a list of them (dinosaur-fossil-bearing ones, at least) but haven't yet done so - can you contribute? - Ballista 05:38, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Hello Ballista. I noticed that there were many with paleontology categories in addition to plain geology since they contained fossils. I can work on the Coon Creek Formation which is a famous formation here in Tennessee for producing mosasaurs. Its only begun and the only limit is Wikipedia's acceptance of all these formations, some as minor as they may be. -- Riffsyphon1024 05:47, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
    • Additionally, I was wondering if the formations needed subcategorizing into Formations by continent, or do the Geology of so-and-so categories cover that already? -- Riffsyphon1024 05:49, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Barnstar

Here you - I hereby award you a double barnstar - (how the heck do we do them in tandem?) - for all your incredible editing work on dino images. - Ballista 05:51, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

P.S.:Of course, it's obvious how to award them in tandem - now done! - Ballista 10:42, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Bwahahaha! You know, Ballista, I've been here a couple of years, and until now, I have never seen a double barnstar! I couldn't stop laughing. Thanks for the award, and thanks also for the laugh. Really cool. :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 17:57, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
No probs, mate (have an even better larf when I tell you where I was when I worked out how to do it .....) - Ballista 18:01, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
OK, I'll bite. Where were you?--Firsfron of Ronchester 18:03, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
On the bog (think-tank) - Ballista 18:06, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, what's a bog (think tank)? I'm American (as you already guessed). Is it a... loo...?--Firsfron of Ronchester 18:15, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

This thread is in serious danger of getting out of hand. Yes, I do have room for the computer in the Bathroom (big house). No, I don't have a computer in the bathroom. I thought it out IN MY HEAD! - Ballista 20:33, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
No, you thought it out on the Head! ;)--Firsfron of Ronchester 21:27, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:Struthiomimus skull.png

Thanks for uploading Image:Struthiomimus skull.png. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 08:06, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

mea culpa

Hi - I have revisited the photographs of that first ill-fated visit to the Oxford Museum, in case I had made further errors. I had! Ornithomimus is Struthiomimus (as per the third visit, in which images are correctly labelled. I must have had a hormonal day, that day (or something). I apologise for dragging you into it, with your beautifully edited shot of the skull. I hope I have now made all the corrections necessary, except to your own files, of course. I have re-uploaded with correct names and captions. I have removed the images from the Ornithomimus page. I think that has now purged all the errors! - Ballista 07:33, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

No problem. Just glad you caught it. Now as long as you're sure your picture of Psittacosaurus isn't T. rex, and Diplodocus isn't actually Microhadrosaurus, we're good... ;) --Firsfron of Ronchester 20:04, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for removing the 'joke' at Megalosaurus. As you might have seen from the edit history, I already removed it once already, but it was stuck back in. I'll be watching that page a bit more carefully now. Thanx!--Firsfron of Ronchester 17:03, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Oviraptor/Citipati

Hey - I wonder if you can help me with the definitive deal on Oviraptor/Citipati - we seem to have a full-blown article on Oviraptor, which reads very like Citipati - are they one and the same? (I think I understood from you, before, that they were). Sorry to be dense but always keen to learn. - Ballista 22:06, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

They are not the same. However, most depictions of Oviraptor are actually Citipati. --Firsfron of Ronchester 22:45, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
here is Citipati; Oviraptor probably had a crest, too, but the only specimens found have had crushed skulls. --Firsfron of Ronchester 23:10, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
BTW, while I'm at it, here's our answer concerning Mary's portrait.--Firsfron of Ronchester 23:27, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
Done it now - take a look - it may be worth doing a more arty-farty crop on it, with Adobe PhotoShop, if you have ideas (User:Ballista/images/Natural History Museum, London). - 62.3.238.214 04:10, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
Looks good! No, no need for another crop, this is just fine... a crop's a crop (I've done crops in MS Paint!), as you already showed with the crop of the Utahraptor foot. Nice work as always! :)--Firsfron of Ronchester 04:29, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanx - did you have some (polite!) ideas where to stick it? - Ballista 05:58, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Bwah! You can stick it... Well, her page looks pretty full. Maybe there's still room on some of these: Plesiosaur (she discovered the first one); if you think the page is too full, there might be room on a species page, Ichthyosaur (she discovered one of the first ones), Pterosaur, Pterodactyl, Jurassic Coast, Dapedium, Dimorphodon, etc. Not all of these, obviously, but wherever it seems appropriate. Sound good?--Firsfron of Ronchester 06:21, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
P.S. I never really noticed, but we have a lot of the same (or similar) userboxes on our respective user pages. It's almost eerie, I think... I just noticed it the other day. --Firsfron of Ronchester 06:35, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Hey, just seen your yesterday's message on my 'sign-up' page. Does that mean that I did some edits and forgot to sign up? - Ballista 20:51, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Sorry it took me a while to respond, I did get your message about an hour ago, but was working on my Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Firsfron page - I'm trying out for admin! Wish me luck. :)
There were four or five edits to dinosaur pages from an anon user. Turned out it was you, just not logged in. You can see one such edit on my talk page, under the Mary Anning heading. I was wondering why you weren't logged in, but it's really no big deal. Just wasn't like you at all! :)--Firsfron of Ronchester 21:46, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
here. As I said, it's no big deal, it just surprised me, is all. I noticed an anonymous user editing your photo pages and was all, "What the...?"
Anyway, the RFA goes well; so far, like, 28 supports, and no opposing votes. I'm nervous as heck, though! How go things on your end?--Firsfron of Ronchester 07:05, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
Sorry to hear about your being so busy. It's great to have you around at least for little bits of time, though. On RfA: Yes, of course, anyone can vote. I felt nervous offering myself up, and things could still go horribly wrong, but I guess if my nomination fails I can always try again some other time. It's not the end of the world. I keep telling myself that. ;) --Firsfron of Ronchester 07:17, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
Forgot to add: it's not necessary for you to vote. I'd be honored if you did vote, either way, but what I really wanted to say is I've just been on pins and needles all day, and preoccupied by this. Maybe in a week or so, things will get back to normal. :/ --Firsfron of Ronchester 07:32, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
Wow! I'm not sure I deserved all that. It makes me feel good, but at the same time, now I've got to actually live up to that. ;) Thanks for your vote; I hope to see you around more often soon! :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 07:42, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for picking that up. I visited my 'shadow' user page (stupidly not realising before that such a thing existed) and, as you can see, it's not the first time I 've done such a thing but I've usually noticed, on previous occasions! It only has the one entry on 20th July, however - is that the only one? I can see why you might have been surprised, as it involved playing about on a page that is not easily found by 'just anybody'. BTW, when do you get to hear about the RFA? - Ballista 07:28, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Well, it's not "stupid", clearly. Do you have your sign-in page set to "remember me" or just log in? If it's not set to "remember me", I guess it might log you out automatically after a while. RfAs take 7 days so they can fully investigate and sift thru all of my contributions, and bring it up on the RfA page if there's anything troubling. So we'll find out in roughly six more days. Meanwhile, I've been absolutely worthless at working on articles. Sorry. :/ --Firsfron of Ronchester 07:45, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I guess I'll take a hit of that Larch! ;) I figured you were using several different PCs from work, hence the logging out issue. At my work, I use several different comps, too, but I always click "remember me" and then log out later, although anyone could easily find out my actual IP pretty easily, if they visited the right pages... --Firsfron of Ronchester 08:09, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Who is this feller?

Hi - do we have this chap on our list or is he, as yet, unnamed [2]? He looks pretty serious! In danger of showing my ignorance here but curiosity got the better of me. - Ballista 05:29, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Nice to see you're double-checking. Quite awesome of you, Ballista. :) The dinosaur in the photo is Mapusaurus, announced in 2000, but not formally described until 2006. you can read more about him here. Good research! :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 05:47, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks! - Came to the right shop, didn't I? - Ballista 05:52, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Looking good

Yes, I've been really surprised and happy by the turnout so far. 'Course, it was helped along by a really great nomination by Fang Aili and some really awesome support votes, including yours. :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 05:56, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
Woah! Sorry to read about the lightning. How bad was the damage? I assume everyone's alright?--Firsfron of Ronchester 07:00, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Just glad to hear (read!) you're alright. Re:Mary Anning: "chosen" indeed. --Firsfron of Ronchester 07:10, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Well, I passed! I'm officially an admin. Thanks, Ballista, for your way cool vote of support on the RfA. I appreciate what you said there, and will work hard to live up to expectations. I also promise to get back to normal editing on WP:Dinosaurs. I've been utterly useless this past week! :) See ya around, --Firsfron of Ronchester 21:59, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

re T-Rex

Thanks, but the work was all yours really - there were only one or two bits extra in the other article. I was a bit concerned I'd redirected the other article a bit too quickly actually, so thanks for confirming it was the correct decision. It's a pretty cool car/bike actually, I'd not heard of them until the other day. Bob 09:05, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks!

Saw your edits on Styracosaurus, Kentrosaurus, and all those ankylosaurs... thanks! Looking much better, IMO. I've been meaning to get to Styracosaurus for ages: it's one of my faves! OK, this message was sort of pointless...--Firsfron of Ronchester 12:05, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

There were about 10 "Therapod"s on WP, and I think most of them were mine! Anyway, all 10 are fixed now. How are things over there? Did you get whatever damage from the lightning fixed?--Firsfron of Ronchester 12:15, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Re:Coelophysis: Ack! Sorry, I don't know why I didn't fix it when I first noticed the error. Well, we've learned our lesson, I suppose... Glad to hear you're not living in a burned-out shell of a house. My imagination always runs wild, you see...--Firsfron of Ronchester 12:38, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Re:Images: yes, if they're just on en.Wikipedia, and they're the ones you uploaded that we've since replaced, I can delete the images you request. Just let me know which ones. However, if any have been uploaded to Commons, we'll have to go thru the normal deletion process.--Firsfron of Ronchester 12:58, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Cool fixes. I thought all the "Therapods" had been hunted to extinction. ;) --Firsfron of Ronchester 20:43, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Memory

I'm sorry, but I do not remember what this was about. I do not know why you are waiting for a response from me? --Mais oui! 09:58, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

I do not have the time right now for this, but a brief review shows that you made very significant edits to that article without citing any references. If you can cite references: great! If you can't, then just go easy! Major revisions should always be well-sourced. Please read WP:CITE and WP:RS, as recommended by User:WAngi at that Talk page. A tip: if you do some modest, referenced edits then they are far more likely to be accepted than a major re-write. --Mais oui! 10:10, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

re: Brake

Aha, you're right. One of the images at disc or drum brake will probably work just as well as anything others are likely to come up with. I wasn't really envisioning anything in specific, I just hadn't explored more. Thanks for pointing that out. --Interiot 11:20, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, I suppose the best thing would be to have one picture of a disc brake, since that's one of the most common types these days, but then have a second picture of some other completely different brake (from a horse carriage, or a cart or something) to keep the article generic. I'm not familiar with such things. I suppose the handle on this must be a brake, I suppose one might be able to rotate that and crop it, unless there's a better close-up of a completely different brake mechanism. --Interiot 11:41, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
Oh, a bicycle bike, brilliant! --Interiot 12:20, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Air conditioning, pics and stuff :D

Hello and thanks for your message! Let me address individual points:

  1. Airco - well, I don't really know why did you come to me with that. I am not particularly interested in this topic, but I guess if you can't find anything, there isn't anything the air conditioning article mentions a few things about applications in automobiles. From my experience, such discovery is usually a good reason to start a research and write an article. I would ask people involved in creating articles on airco and HVAC as such, as well as involved in articles on automobile engineering for support.
  2. Nice images there. Again, don't know why you approached me about them, all I can do for you is congratulate you on your efforts and results! The pics have already been put in respective articles, so....? Or perhaps there's more that I don't know about?
As concerns uploading to Commons, it is in general seen as courteous of the user to upload their own-made and copyright-free pics to the Commons so that they can be used by all WikiProjects. I have perhaps served as an uploader for a few people who didn't want to set up a Wiki account, but I don't feel like doing this full-time :D I also have no authority or intention to remove any pics from English WP - do also note that a picture in the Commons can be linked to from the English (or any other WP) by simply placing its name in the [[Image:sumfink.jpg]] tag, provided there is no picture with the same name within the "upload" area of a given Wiki. So, uploading those pics to the Commons would make the copies in the English Wiki simply redundant.
  3. Thanks a lot :D Greeting from myself to you then, I can't provide you with greetings from entire Poland, but in general Polish people like UK people so I guess the sympathy is two-way :D

Excuse me for being sarcastic and unhelpful, I have just been extremely upset by somebody, I hope it doesn't show that much in this post/edit. Regards, Bravada, talk - 13:16, 2 August 2006 (UTC) PS. Please let me know what exactly I could do for you (except for the uploading thing, please spare me that) and I will gladly help you - I am just too dim-witted to infer from your message.

Two questions & greetings

Hello again - I have two questions for you:

  1. You kindly uploaded some of my images to Commons. That was fine but I only recently found that they also 'disappeared' off the English Wikipedia. I wonder if you could let me know what process you used, for my 'learning curve'. I want to put other images up on Commons but don't want to lose them from the English WP. How do I do it, without going through the laborious process of uploading them again, de novo, onto Commons?
  2. I can't find anything on air-conditioning or climate control, on English WP. Am I missing something?
  3. Not a question: I've uploaded some more images (mostly Saab!) onto a sub-page: User:Ballista/Images/Vehicle components, in case you're interested. Please feel free to upload to Commons, if you wish but please don't remove them from English WP!
  4. Greetings and best wishes from the UK and from me - Ballista 09:19, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
1. I used to do it manually, but now I'm using http://tools.wikimedia.de/~magnus/commonshelper.php (with a bit of manual work put into it). I download the image and then have to upload it again, but the assistant helps with categories and such. Then I tag the image on English Wikipedia with {{NCT}}. Images tagged as available from commons may get deleted since they are accessable from any Wikpedia project anyway.
2. Air conditioning?
3. I'll have a lok at it. Thanks for the tip.

I noticed you have re-uploaded some pictures that have been moved to Commons (sometimes under a different name). Please don't do that. It's unnecessary to have the same picture more than once. // Liftarn
