Punctuation

Hi Emily - I'm one of the longtime lead editors of the article on Caroline Kennedy and others. I see you've been doing some copy editing which is always very much appreciated - many of your edits on several articles are spot on and very helpful, so thank you for that.

There is, however, a problem regarding punctuation inside/outside of quotes. Wikipedia style on English Wikipedia (regardless of whether the article uses British or American spelling), as explained in detail in MOS:LQ, calls for "logical quotation" style: punctuation outside of quotation marks in most instances, despite what we were taught in school in the US. It says this there, and then goes on to give examples:

On the English Wikipedia, use the "logical quotation" style in all articles, regardless of the variety of English in which they are written. Include terminal punctuation within the quotation marks only if it was present in the original material, and otherwise place it after the closing quotation mark. For the most part, this means treating periods and commas in the same way as question marks: Keep them inside the quotation marks if they apply only to the quoted material and outside if they apply to the whole sentence.

So would you be able to go back in and revert your changes where needed - and same on any other articles that you may have made these good faith edits on? I'll try to do some of it, but the help would be appreciated - and I did want to explain why I was undoing that work and let you know for future editing.

Actually in looking it over I was able to go in and make the corrections - so unless I missed any, you don't need to do anything on these, but just be aware of it. I don't know why it was decided that we'd follow this style, but it's been that way for years, and we try to be consistent in things like this. Cheers. Tvoz/talk 06:54, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
