Palmpedia

[edit]

Hello, I notice you have added links to articles on palmpedia.net to many articles here. Are you User:Enjula there? It would improve Wikipedia if these things were loaded directly here, but I couldn't tell the copyright status of materials on Palmpedia (the about page doesn't mention it). In particular, we are looking for recordings to add to the gamelan page, that can be freely licensed with the GFDL license. Can you provide some? gamelan recording

[edit]

The recording was a "field" recording that I personally recorded myself with a digital multitrack while I was in Bali. I haven't copyrighted it. So do I license it with gfdl?? Palmpedia is a new wiki that we are trying to get going... (to be honest I don't really know what I am doing!) I hope it is ok for Palmpedia to link up with wikipedia because Palmpedia some day will be a very extensive site about Palms and everything relating to them. The problem is we have been a little slow getting contributers! Please let me know if it is ok to "join" forces by external limks and if so, what is the best way to do it! I don't want to cause any trouble :) --Enjula 00:39, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The policy of Wikipedia on external links is explained at Wikipedia:External links. Under links normally to be avoided it reads: "Links to open wikis, except those with a substantial history of stability and a substantial number of editors." That seems to describe Palmpedia for now, so perhaps it is better to avoid adding those links. (If however, it does become extensive and well-maintained, then that may change). However, the content from Palmpedia articles may be addable, if there wasn't a copyright restriction. Everything on Wikipedia is covered by the GFDL license, which you assert every time you save a page. Anything that is not eligible (i.e. somebody else holds a stricter copyright) can't be added except under narrow fair use guidelines. I didn't see on Palmpedia that the content was freely licensed by a GFDL or similar license, so it couldn't be added directly, although possibly it would give ideas for constructing one's own article here, that didn't violate copyright. You can read the copyright policy for more information.
It would be great if you wished to upload gamelan recordings. You should hold the copyright to them because you recorded them yourself, although I'm not actually sure how that works since there were other musicians involved. They should be in the Ogg Vorbis format. There is an explanation of how to upload and add music to articles at Wikipedia:Media#Audio. I haven't done it so I'm not a great person to ask, but it seems pretty straightforward.
As for personal stuff, I've played in a Javanese gamelan for a few years, but haven't been to Indonesia and don't speak Indonesian beyond a few words. I don't think I'll be working on Palmpedia for now, though I may look at it sometimes to see what is there and dream about travel to Bali. :) Rigadoun (talk) 16:59, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
