What I do

[edit]

I just go to recent changes, click on a page that you think is your best bet, look at history and compare the selected versions. If there is vandalism, click "undo". Then warn the vandal. Hope that helps (: Let's go and get some vandals! Cheers, JetLover -- Talk to me! 21:09, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blocking

[edit]

Actually, unless you're an admin, you can't block someone. However, you can Report them here. And you can use templates to show them that they are blocked. Cheers, JetLover -- Talk to me! 21:20, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WP:AIV

[edit]

Hi Exert,

I noticed what looked like your first-ever report to AIV. It wasn't formatted the way they like it, so I stuck my nose in and formatted it. For your future use, the correct way to add a report for a vandal using an IP address and a registered user, repsectively, is to add a line at the bottom of the page like this:

  • {{IPvandal|76.180.22.12}} Brief description goes here. ~~~~
  • {{Vandal|Example User Name}} Brief description goes here. ~~~~

Then it's formatted correctly, the automated bots they use to maintain the page will recognize it, and (hopefully) the vandal gets nuked faster. --barneca (talk) 16:59, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(my reply to your comment on my talk page, copied here) No problem. When I first started editing and looking "behind the curtain", i was really amazed at how much vandalism there is, and how many people there are trying to clean it up. Don't know if you know this already or not, but Wikipedia:Cleaning up vandalism has a lot of useful info if you decide you want to do more of it. Watch out, tho, it's addictive. --barneca (talk) 17:07, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what happened to your sandbox. I don't think it was deleted, so maybe you just didn't get the link right. And cheers just means "Good day." And I think you might have better luck asking things at the Help desk because there are so many people you are sure to get an answer. Cheers, JetLover -- Talk to me! 22:38, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your AIV report

[edit]

Thank you for making a report on Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Reporting and removing vandalism is vital to the functioning of Wikipedia and all users are encouraged to revert, warn, and report vandalism. However, administrators are generally only able to block users if they have received a recent final warning (one that mentions that the user may be blocked) and they have recently vandalized after that warning was given. The reported user has not yet been blocked because it appears this has not occurred yet. If this user continues to vandalize after their final warning, please report them to the AIV noticeboard again. Thank you. Khukri 14:21, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I reported 71.49.180.197 cause he had a final warning then he had a page reverted by a bot then he vandalized Avian Flu, Thus vandalizing after his final warning. User:Exert 14:31, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

May I just point you to the text at the top of WP:AIV vandalized after a recent last warning. I'm sorry but 2 and a half weeks ago isn't recent, and with it being a anonymous IP there's a high chance the person vandalising isn't the same as before. We must be seen to follow out own rules. Trust me I know vandalism is a pain in the proverbial but if administrators start blocking at will without following our own rules, then there will be all sorts of accusations of impropriety. Cheers Khukri 14:35, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I did not realize that the final warning was given two weeks ago. I did not read the other warning dates. Sorry for the troubles. User:Exert 14:40, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not a prob, if you ever need any pointers or help with vandal patrol don't hesitate to gimme a shout, OK? Khukri 14:43, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit to Way of St. James

[edit]

Please note that there is no scientific evidence that the tomb at Santiago de Compostella holds the actual remains of St James. The legend may state so, but without a reference to a scientific publication verifying this claim, please keep the caveat that it is only a legend (and no proven fact) in place. Thank you. I'm not an admin, but I reported him and it says in the block log if somebody's blocked. I just but the template. Cheers, JetLover (Talk) (Sandbox) 21:48, 11 June 2007 (UTC) Here's a few. {{test5}} {{uw-block1}} {{Bbblock}} Cheers, JetLover (Talk) (Sandbox) 21:48, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not before he's blocked. Check the history in the AIV and it will say "whoever blocked by someone for 1 day".

IRC Channel

which one are you talking about, #vandalism-en-wp? If so, you'll have to download a client program, like Chatzilla or XChat(I use this). Depending on what OS you have(I have windows) you may have to pay for it...but...if you go here you can get a slightly older version for free. This channel is not accessible through CGI:IRC(the default IRC for wikipedia). Peace. Spartan-James 22:46, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your support and comments at my RfA
Hi Exert, It still amazes me that otherwise "anonymous" editors take the time to place !votes and comments on RfAs. Whilst I would have normally thanked you at the time of you leaving your message, the importance of my not appearing to be canvassing prevented me from so doing. Now that everything has progressed successfully I can finally thank you. I intend to uphold a style of good adminship and will welcome your further comments at any time in the future, even if they are in the form of admonishment. Thank you for participating in my RfA. It was successful, and I am now, may God have mercy on us all, an administrator. Look at all the new buttons! I had heard about 'protect,' 'block user,' and 'delete,' but no one told me about 'kill,' 'eject,' and 'purée.' I appreciate the trust the community has in me, and I'll try hard not to delete the main page or block Jimbo. -FisherQueen (Talk) 17:59, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regardsing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Glen Osbourne. I have updated the article, infobox and a few citations. The article should pass WP:BIO Athlete now. However it's still pretty poor on citation. Still depends on what you want to vote on it. But being that he competed in ECW and ECWA is passable for WP:BIO Athlete and being that he won belts, should be fairly notable in professional wrestling terms. Your thoughts are welcome know. Govvy 14:16, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - while I understand your 'vote' to delete this article based its previous state, I've now done a bit of work on it to assert notability and providing a reliable reference. Sure, it's still nothing but a stub, but verifiable subject notability rather than article quality is what we need to consider at afd's. I hope you can have look at the article and reconsider your position. many thanks Merbabu 10:06, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My idea was just to group off editors who do the same kind of work. For example, as an RC Patroller, I would work with other RCPs, and we would all work to report what pages are being vandalized a lot. That way, we would be able to report to AIV, or something. There are details that need to be hammered out, but i think it will work. J-stan Talk 18:58, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have a way to help

[edit]

Hello! I noticed your user page, and I also noticed the vandalized userbox. I have a solution that will solve most if not all of your vandalism problems. Go to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection and file a request for semi-protection following the instructions there. According to the policy at WP:PROTECT, you can have your userpage (but not user talk page) semi-protected indefinitely if you so request. I had it done to my userpage, and it really does help. However, you can't have your page full-protected, which means that users older than 4 days can still edit your user page. However, this stops all IP-vandalism.

Page Deletion?

[edit]

I recently was informed that our page http://en.wikipedia.org/wik/Hello_Goodbye_the_band was deleted on July 5, 2007 and I would like to contest the deletion since there are other Beatle tribute bands listed with no more or less credibility than our aggregation; in particular 1964 the tribute & Blue Meanies. As far as "notability", since it's inception seven years ago Hello Goodbye has performed to standing room only attendances in the state of Florida thus gaining the act the moniker "Florida's premier musical tribute to The Beatles" as well as performing for over 800,000 live on one night (and over 1 million via TV simulcast on WSVN TV FOX AFFILIATE MIAMI) for the International Boat Show sponsored by Nokea, which is probably more than any other Beatle tribute has ever performed for in a single night (including all of the Beatle festivals worldwide). The band has also been featured in various publications, most notably & prominently in the recently published "All You Need Is Love To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb - How The Beatles and U2 Changed The World" written by Todd McFliker (http://www.creativejournalist.com) and published by Continuum Press (http://www.continuumbooks.com/Books/detail.aspx?ReturnURL=/Search/default.aspx&CountryID=2&ImprintID=2&BookID=129768) in Chapter 10 "The Tribute Bands" pages 105, 106, 107 & 108.

...because at the time I did the welcome, it did not seem clearly evident to me that this person was indeed a vandal. Thus, the welcome is in good faith, and should not be "challenged." Furthermore, I do not note any "test 1" etc. notices from you or anyone else at this moment. We should likely use those if the editor is, in fact, vandalizing. Happy editing, Kukini hablame aqui 06:42, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was sorta wondering, since you noted the vandalism here [1], why did you not communicate with this editor about your concerns in his/her vandalism? Kukini hablame aqui 06:47, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. I just prefer to warn editors prior to blocking them. For example. I would not choose to block this editor until we went through one more warning, taking us through the whole 4 tests. In the case of a signed-in editor, like this, I would likely then do an indefinite block. I generally will not block someone prior to working them through (or someone else doing so) the test 1, test 2, test 3, test 4 warning system, or similar. Thanks for your response. --Kukini hablame aqui 07:00, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New warning template

[edit]

OG - I proposed the template abuse warning at WT:UTM and there was no real opposition. So, I think we can move forward with adding it to the list. As you started it, do you want the honor of finishing it up and adding it to UTM? If not, I'll be happy to do it.--Kubigula (talk) 03:21, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Linkin Park and 3RR Three-revert rule

[edit]

I fully protected the Linkin Park article and blocked four of the fifteen accounts being used to engage in the revert war at Linkin Park, including your user account. A fifth user account was blocked by another admin. An editor must not perform more than three reverts, in whole or in part, on a single page within a 24-hour period. See Wikipedia:Three-revert rule. Most of the editors knew when to stop, some did not. The 3RR vandalism exception applies only to the most simple and obvious vandalism, the kind that is immediately apparent to anyone reviewing the last edit. It is not sufficient if the vandalism is simply apparent to those contributing to the article, those familiar with the subject matter, or those removing the vandalism itself. If you have a disagreement over content, discuss that disagreement on this talk page. When in doubt, do not revert. If discussion is not possible, ask for administrative assistance or engage in dispute resolution. For now, please take a break and enjoy the rest of the weekend. -- Jreferee (Talk) 20:36, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request

[edit]

Greets, first of all thx for reverting the blanking of my page done by 69.19.14.20. Secondly, i'd like to add that 69.19.14.20 has vandalised some pages that i have started or contributed such as Veria, Kostas Tsartsaris, Jeremiah Massey which you can see at the edit history. Could you please do something like locking this articles for some time? Many thanks.Sergiogr 21:45, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your welcome, and I am not an admin so I can not lock the articles, but you can request protection at requests for page protection. Although it looks like they have stopped but I'll keep an eye on them. Exert 21:51, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mind if i ask you something? I mean i want to propose a article for deletion but every time i do some stranger not registered keeps deleting my template with no apparent reason. What can i do about that? Thanks again Sergiogr 22:00, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You can put {{uw-afd1}} on there talk page. If they do it again you can change the number, so if they did it again you could put {{uw-afd2}}. If they do it after a fourth time you can report them to Administrator intervention against vandalism so they can be blocked. Exert 22:07, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi, I don't use wikipedia editing all too often but i did notice that a user has repeatedly vandalized pages, most recently the Maximillian Ropespierre page. 205.213.108.217. I was hoping if this IP could be prevented from making changes anymore. Thank you. --134.241.222.140 19:18, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

They have stoped now, but if they continue to vandalize after you tell them not to you can report them to AIV and request to have them blocked. Exert 14:07, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have been trying to create a page about my comic (which is real) but when ever i start making the page it is removed. Is there anything i can do? Thanks Gooners34 15:55, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you can give me that name of the article, I will see if I can help. Exert 16:01, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! It's called "the adventures of chap-man and chuffdog"

Thanks again! Gooners34 11:06, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, if you read the deletion log for it it says DragonflySixtyseven deleted it because it was not notable yet, to show that it is notable you need reliable independent sources. Exert 14:13, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I blocked this IP, and then noticed you posted a warning at User talk:139.177.225.105. Do you want to unblock this IP? I trust your judgment. Bearian 14:44, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I had originally warned that IP thinking they were a diffrent IP and later realised that that was the wrong one, so, yes I would like that IP unblocked. Exert 22:51, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Exert ... you pinged the author of the article Jun Mapili (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) that you had tagged it for speedy deletion, but you never actually tagged it ... please have a look at my Deletion warnings protocol and add your 2¢ worth ... My RfA

[edit]

Hey there, I'm writing to inform you that I have withdrawn my request for adminship, which was currently standing at 11 supports, 22 opposes and 6 neutrals. This count could have been so much better if I had understood policy, although I believe that 17 questions is a lot to ask of a user's first RfA. I will take on all comments given at the RfA and will endeavour to meet the high expectations of the RfA voters. WEBURIEDOURSECRETSINTHEGARDENplay it cool. 21:15, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Myself

[edit]

It's a litle bit silly to send messages about vandalism to anonymous users. Today I got two of them, pretty useless as here where I live, static IP addresses are very rare. So it wasn't obviously me who did those changes.

I really can't give a definite date, but the servers assign edit reattribution on low priority, so the process happens slowly, especially for someone with as many edits as you. bibliomaniac15 22:37, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 17:21, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
