Minor criticism: Wikipedia's style is to not capitalize every word in a headline. So, for instance, your "The Perils of Perestroika" would become "The perils of Perestroika" or maybe even just "Perils of perestroika". - Mauco 18:38, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! I like it better with the "the" so I went with the first one. jamason 19:09, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
Intro
[edit]Probably splitting hairs, but it wasn't necessarily that the MSSR was looking for independence either. The precipitating event was the MSSR declaring that the Supreme Soviet of the MMSR took precedence over the central authority.
It's not like Russian isn't spoken on the floor of the Moldovan parliament today, and as I recall I think there are more Russian than Romanian papers in Chisinau. The problem is that the PMR is primarily the result of militant separatists feeding off a "democratic" collective fear, if you will, expressed in the declaration to separate (by Transnistrian representatives in the Moldovan parliamen recalled from Chisinau), and coopted into a family run business (as opposed to being supported by a freely expressed democratic will) where it's recorded who voted for whom/what. — Pēters J. - Hi Peters. Thanks for your comments. Here are some thoughts:
- "but it wasn't necessarily that the MSSR was looking for independence either": In September 1990? Or some other time? If September 1990, you might have to fill me in as to what you are alluding. I wouldn't have thought this controversial.
- "The precipitating event was the MSSR declaring that the Supreme Soviet of the MMSR took precedence over the central authority.": I'm not sure exactly how you would defend this statement. The creation of major opposition groups came in response to the proposed language legislation and the creation of the state followed soon after the Moldovan declaration of sovereignty. I'm also not entirely clear as to what you are referring. Is this a discrete act?
- "It's not like Russian isn't spoken on the floor of the Moldovan parliament today, and as I recall I think there are more Russian than Romanian papers in Chisinau.": I don't follow your argument here. Beside the obvious dangers of inferring intent from result, I don't really see how this could be construed as a critique of either the intro specifically or even the article more broadly.
- "The problem is that the PMR is primarily the result of militant separatists feeding off a "democratic" collective fear": probably too argument-driven a statement to make it into a wikipedia article. While you've phrased it to evoke a sinister impression, I think you're basically right.
- "and coopted into a family run business.": I will leave this for someone else to address. My period of study is strictly limited to 1989-1992. Whenever the conversation turns contemporary, I have to insist on my own disinterest. jamason 02:58, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
