Maybe it was a time ban, because I can edit now. Oreo

Excessive vandalism in Buddhism and Hinduism

User:Green23, User:Saavak123 and User:216.254.121.169 are sockpuppets of the same person. They have the same patterns (see here and here) and what's worse is that they have started voting in AfD debates (You'll notice that the only two delete votes are given by Green23 and Savak123 here). This is in addition to them having the number 23 common in their ID and the same contribution patterns.

I've worked hard and even mentioned their excessive quotes on another page altogather and linked it up, aside from mentioning every aspect of the earlier work. My good faith has met with arguments such as "read all edits...tagging until I add edits. Go to discussion page to get facts straight."

Please take appropriate action and ensure the sanctity of the article.

I blocked this user indefinitely after discussing the matter with other admins on IRC. The contributions are interesting (in their manner, not their content): a third of them were controversial edits to his user page (namely userboxes praising Osama bin Laden and referring to the John Seigenthaler Sr. controversy), a third were abusive or just downright trolling, and a third were vandalism reverts. Given the reversions of vandalism, I had to get a second opinion on the matter, but I think the trolling ([3], [4], [5]) and abusive edits (such as this post on Jimbo's user talk page) trump the vandalism reverts. --Coredesat 12:01, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Yeah, it was lucky I was keeping my eye on that article for vandals and such. Being attacked like that is something nobody should have to put up with. I was called a "dumbass" and "idiot" today too, so I can kind of relate. :) -→Buchanan-Hermit/?! 07:38, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a little incredulous that someone would do a speedy delete on all 6 templates, after 3 AfDs chose keep, and there was clearly no consensus on this page among the admins. Aren't speedy deletions for uncontroversial material? I'm too emotionally involved to say anything on the noticeboard myself. -Patstuart(talk)(contribs) 02:50, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Leeching internet

hi, this is the person who asked to be unbanned from the IP 71.141.128.49

i live in an appartment and i'm sorry to say, people leech my internet just curious but could you send me the pages that they vandalized? maybe this way i could find out which of them did it

thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dalazshinobi (talkcontribs)

I was going to answer the question, but I saw that Special:Contributions/71.141.128.49 has no history. It appears, Dalaz, that it had nothing to do with people leeching your internet, but with other IPs in your range. Luna will have to answer your question more specifically. Your removal of information at WP:PAIN

Why? Why did you do this edit? [9] Your edit summary states: User:Luna Santin -- (Fahrenheit451 - looks like no further action is being taken). So your edit summary stated your conclusion but your edit summary did not state what you did. Your summary doesn't say that you deleted from the page, or archived it or cut and pasted it somewhere. Yet User:Durova had requested something from User:Fahrenheit451 which had not happened yet. The possibility of resolving an issue is gone from the board now, thanks to your edit. Why did you do it, what did you do? Do you require a fuller explanation of the issue which was, as is appropriate, briefly stated ? Terryeo 22:27, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Newbie Question

Seems you beat me to it (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log/block&page=User:212.159.116.212)

I requested this user had their IP address blocked. However I realised I should show a warning to them first. How do you show a warning template to an anonymous user? Its not explained anywhere - it just mentions showing one on their talk page. Can you answer this question?

Pdhooper 22:50, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quick response!

Thanks for the swift response. The links you gave me are the ones I've read, and I can see how to do it for a registered user. However I must be being really dumb as I cannot see how you can target a warning an just an anonymous user. With an anonymous user they do not have a talk page, and surely if you put the warning up on the vandalised page then everyone will see, or will they?

Ah! that makes it clearer - thanks. I've put a warning for the user in question [here] - hope this is correct. I have found in the UK that the DHCP leases of most ISP lasts a long time - a matter of months, so lets hope he sees it. Thanks again, Pdhooper 23:10, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have some concern.

One this page here [10] under the file history it says that I "reverted" the image, which is not really true. Now I hate to play with other users but I may have to request to change my password. Please if you can investigate this for me or explain to me how it can be possible it would very much be appreciated.(UNFanatic 03:39, 10 November 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Unfair Blocking

About a warning left on User talk:MONGO's page regarding vandalism

Even after reviewing WP:VAND, I am unsure how to qualify an attempt by an editor to remove every instance of a particular word from Wikipedia. The word is dysgenics, and the user removed it from no less than 9 different pages (please refer to his list of contributions to see the list, all done between 07:10 and 07:48 EST November 10 (they're all in a row and difficult to miss). However, in the interest of civility I will go and remove again the template and explain instead what was intended.--Ramdrake 21:08, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Danny (Tourettes Guy)

This is a joke. Why did you delete this immediately? Have you no brain? This is more popular than Numa Numa and LeeRoy Jenkins, and both of those are wikipedia articles. Check yourself. You Wikipedia admins are a joke. You must get hurt every time an article is made. You should be ashamed!!!!!!!! Talk to me about this, we are not finished. Sportsguru9999 22:39, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, Tourettes Guy is better than you! 75.31.102.186 22:42, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The deletion review system is completely flawed, we tried putting under the deletion review already. Here is what happened: Those for overturning Tourettes Guy gave many points for overturning that made a lot of sense and proved that the deletion should be overturned. However, there were obviously more admins that flocked over to each say the same thing, that the AfD was valid. It offered no value and no proof that it should stay deleted. I guess since so many admins followed each other and were offended by having an article like this, the concluder, also an admin, decided to endorse the deletion. I hope you see that this is completely flawed, and another AfD should be created, because the already concluded AfD's are unfair, and the Deletion Review article was unfair. I hope you read all of this and that you will discuss this with me. As you can tell I am very stressed out by the fact that Tourettes Guy is not an article. Sportsguru9999 23:00, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I am really frusterated with wikipedia admins, and you are the first to help me in any way. I know that there are thousands of you, a lot of which abuse their power. I hope something can happen for this. Thanks again. Sportsguru9999 23:08, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just came across User talk:82.18.125.110 where you allege that this anonymous editor made legal threats. If his comment directly above yours is the only instance in which he/she allegedly made legal threats then you are failing to assume good faith and you really need to leave them alone. I would ask that if this is the case then in the future you will take a step back and think before you edit. If there was another instance in which the user actually made legal threats then I apologize for wasting your time. KazakhPol 20:41, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Checking out

Hi Luna,

You seemed to take an interest in goings-on with the conspiracy crowd. So I thought I'd drop you a note before I took a long break to tell you my views. I see a very unfortunate dynamic taking hold on Wikipedia, and there will be no way to stop it. There's no point in an RFC or anything else, because I well know what the typical attitude will be.

In my opinion, there is a wolfpack mentality in parts of Wikipedia. A group of editors with a similar outlook scour Wikipedia for articles they don't care for. Post notice of it on boards and to each other. And then swarm en masse to either AFD or completely re-write to their POV over-whelming by numbers any other editors there. A good example is Operation Gladio where multiple editors have suggested that the only valid sources are CIA press releases, about itself.

Admin Seabhcan has gone on break, apparently out of frustration about that, as am I. There's really no point in trying to hold a discussion when you know what the outcome will be, because of sheer numbers of people whose outlook you already know. Missing from the debate is one of the key elements of NPOV policy: we don't adjudicate what the facts are, we report what people say the facts are. That includes notable people other than the CIA, especially scholars.

There is no doubt that this group of editors has purged some bad articles. However, that would have happened without the 'pack' aspect, so it's no justification. There have, however, been some perfectly good, notable, and well-sourced articles which have been or have very-nearly been deleted because of this. That's judging from the 'votes' of people not in the conspiracy crowd. I actually personally agree with their viewpoint on the underlying facts of Gladio; however, I don't agree with the heavy-handed way they want to make that personal view the 'truth' in the article.

There has always been a certain element of people taking note of what others work on. That keeps wikipedia lively and healthy. But, a line has been crossed, where calling in help, either explicitly or implicitly, seems to be the primary dynamic. I've certainly been in situations in the past where I would have liked to call in some friends who I knew would likely share my views of an article. I almost never have in a legitimate disagreement, because it seemed thuggish to me to win by force of numbers. I often agree with the views of this group, but the methods I cannot stand. The phenomenon is broad, and will become broader. I've seen it in Israel/Palestine, abortion, and so on. Essentially anything people get emotionally aroused by.

The irony is, of course, that the anti-conspiracy theory crowd would paint me as just a wiki-conspiracy theorist. I'm not; I'm an economics professor with lots of experience in game theory. And so I recognize a dominant strategy has emerged, which is probably not in Wikipedia's interest. At any rate, I've gotten so worked up about this the last month that I've let my actual work lapse. There is nothing here for me but annoyance at the moment, and zero prospect of reform. So I'll take a few months off. Thanks for being the subject of my venting. Another FWIW

A while back, another editor claimed on your talk page that I was POV-pushing, and cited various conflicts with other accounts. Well, there's been something of a dénouement. If you are curious, then check that editor's list, and see just how many of those alleged instances of my POV-pushing prove instead to be conflicts with

You might also look at the subsequent career of Will314159, since my accuser's edit war against me at the article on John Murtha was an attempt to preserve intact an edit by Will314159. My accuser's belief that I was POV-pushing is an artefact of his own, intense POV. (I do not all believe that he is himself a sockpuppet; I merely assert that he wears large blinders.) —12.72.70.78 00:08, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

autoblock problem at 218.186.8.13

Hey. Per unblock-en-l discussion, it looks like an autoblock of Hinomaru6 (talk · contribs) caught the IP address 218.186.8.13, which turns out to be in StarHub Cablevision shared IP space in Singapore, and caught Syed Ahmad Al-Joofri (talk · contribs). Help! My User name changed!

Hi, I've noticed you as an active and tireless admin and was wondering if you could help me...

My user name is (was) NinaEliza. My user name has been CHANGED mysteriously to NinzEliza. What is weirder is that all responses to me who have addressed me by name have had the name changed from NinaEliza to NinzEliza. I'm CERTAIN my name was NinaEliza! I feel like I've gone through the looking glass! Can you help me? Thanks in advance! NinzEliza 02:56, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Access

Hi Luna

I am a little confused because I haven't used this system before but when I made an attempt to edit or contribute to a subject, I was told I was banned and I can't recall ever having used this before. What's worse, I've been told I'm a vandal. Can you help me understand this. I have looked up the reasons however, can find nothing that relates to me here.

Roy

Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University

Hi.

can you unprotect the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University? There was a vandal from the Galgary University making offensive statements but my guess is he/they are long gone now.

Thanks. 195.82.106.244 07:52, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Appreciated both ways. 195.82.106.244 08:32, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Luna Santin, I would like to request for user 195.82.106.244 to obtain a user name. This suggestion was previously asked by admin RHolton to user .244. It was not observed. I feel that user .244 is the main contributor on this page and thus, it would be a good idea to keep this in mind. It was a real "hassle" for me to get to discuss with different IPs coming from the same network (Univ. of Calgary.) Thsi will make things easier to deal with. Also, I would like to give some info to you about this page.

As the talk page shows in the archives, users "195.82.106.244", "talkabout" and supporters would like to use materials which belong to Brahma Kumaris which by definition are not considered "reliable sources." Besides, even if these materials were used by user .244 and group of supporters, these materials were being used in a highly biased way, in a detrimental way towards the organization which they pretend to use to "inform" the public thus, it could never be considered "self-serving" but rather contentious.

There is a point that I would like to stress. Articles which belong to an encyclopedia must be non-biased. User 195.82.106.244 and supporters being the originators of this article do not fit this category. They were "ex-Brahma Kumaris" and by definition, biased. As a matter of fact, user.244 has a public website located at: www.brahmakumaris.info which notably portrays an antagonistic vision towards Brahma Kumaris. I thought, I should mention this to you Jossi and Sethie as a background for your help in keeping this article as non-biased as possible. That is the reason why academia has been highly quoted in the majority of this article. It is non-biased research. Thank you and look forward to hearing from you. Best Wishes, avyakt7 16:11, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I have nothing to do with the University of Calgary. Wrong continent by many thousands of miles, I am afraid. Never been to that country in my life. And who are these supporters that I am aware of ... if I do they are doing a damn poor job! Personal attack on behalf of BK follower. Sorry to bother you. 195.82.106.244 21:21, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there ... I think you stepped on my edits and did a revert while I had two edit windows open to do a copy&paste from one section to another ... part of the article was deleted, and it's followed by an edit with no comment, so I suspect that I closed one by mistake.

Anywho, please check my edits that were not apparent vandalism, and let me know if you agree with my changes to the "Real and fictional guest characters" section ... my current "quest" is to get some of the cruft out, and if a character is cited in more than two scenes, then I think that they should be bulleted items. That's why I did the Adolph Hitler reference that way. Note that I tightened up and added links to the Adam and Eve paragraph, which had been under "Supernatural characters".

Somebody added Gregory Peck to "Other characters" ... please see my comment at Talk:List of characters from Family Guy#Real and fictional guest characters page about adding them to the the correct section with a link to the episode ... I don't remember this cutaway (or what episode it was from), but I wikified it and moved it instead of just deleting it, per WP:BITE.

Like I said, "My bad!" ... it was an accident, not vandalism ... second time it's happenened to me this week, BTW ... I must set a limit on how many changes I try to make in one session. —141.156.240.102 (talk|contribs) 09:38, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ahh, gotcha. No problem, that sort of thing happens. For my part, I just saw a big removal of text without a summary, so reverted and moved on to the next edit to check (sounds exciting, I know). Looks like your edits are good, so keep it up. :) Luna Santin 09:40, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Kewl! Here's my plan to combat cruft ... if the entries are ventilated, (a) it points out the ones that lack a citation, and (b) it encourages editors to find and add the episode link.
Please see List of characters from Family Guy#Real and fictional guest characters as an example. The Abraham Lincoln section now has a link to at least one of the episodes, and it's a lot more concise. (I also used it to anchor links for "cutaway" and "flashback".) You can see that the last two entries under Adolph Hitler have good references ... In "Episode Xyz", this character ... I'll try to "cleanup" the other four entries when I'm in a fresher state of mind.
My next Major Task is that some characters (like Tom Tucker), do in fact have more than one entry in the list ... he is currently under Tuckers and Channel 5 ... alphabetizing some of the sections has brought this into sharper focus, and is helping to eliminate duplication of anecdotes.
I also need to move a lot of the cruft from Adam West to the Family Guy page for him ... any character with their own page should be pruned down as much as possible, with absolutely no cruft. —141.156.240.102 (talk|contribs) 10:11, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Personal attack intervention

I just have no idea what a personal attack if it isn't calling someone a racist. I kept it short, I got asked for more, I post more, and get asked to post more, saying it will support my case, then when I comply I get told it's too much.

This is pure and simple adminstrator bias towards Tajik.

No matter how foul he bahaves, no matter what he says about Turks, about Pashtuns, no matter how many people he calls a racist, me, Turks, anyone who isn't an Iranian, it's not a personal attack when Tajik issues it--but administrators block people who act towards Tajik, just like Tajik behaves towards everyone.

I backed down. I tried discussing the matter in a civilized matter. I asked for help from the mediation cabal. I posted a warning on Tajik's talk page (which he deleted and posted on mine). I tried following the rules, and all I get is Tajik being given carte blanche to continue personally attacking any one and every one on Wikipedia who doesn't consider Afghanistan a state of Iran.

Administrators are willing to block other editors when Tajik asks for doing to Tajik exactly what he does to me and others, but no one is willing to block Tajik for calling people a racist, saying that that is allowed on Wikipedia.

KP Botany 22:50, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So, this is fine in Wikipedia:
"Or any other Turkish nationalists in here who have been depanted so many times, not only by me, but also by others?!"
"you are STILL fully supporting his racist and POVish opinion"
"stop supporting racism."
"sympathy for the Taliban."
"rv ... provide credible sources instead of messing up the article with hot air from your belly"
Not a single proof of my racism, simply character slander without any supporting evidence. This is a personal attack. He's calling me a racist, not my remarks, because he can't quote a single racist remark I've made, because I haven't.
I bet if I called him a racist, he could get an administrator to block me in a second.
I'll be sure to use exactly his tone and language and words on all my future edits of the pages he thinks he owns, instead of bothering with dispute resolution, since it's not required of Tajik, and he mocks me for using it.
And I got the message that warning templates can't be use on administrator's pets, either, because they can just delete them, along with being encouraged to ignore WP:dispute resolution guidelines and mock editors who waste time using them.
KP Botany 23:11, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I included them, just like you show, after spending an hour reading the wikismog about them.
I get it now, though. Tajik can do whatever he wants, and I have to follow dispute resolution processse to give him something to mock me for, so adminstrators can then tell me, "do this," and scold me for doing what they told me to do, ask me questions, then put me on the spot for answering their questions, for providing details they asked for.
It's no wonder the Afghan articles read as if the nation of Afghanistan is merely a state of Iran, anyone who tries to correct the misinformation will be told to play by the Wikipedia rules which don't apply to Tajik.
I'll be sure to throw the term 'racist' around as often as Tajik so I, too, can win friends and influence people instead of trying to be civilized and talk to them about the articles themselves.
I'll also, just like Tajik, just remove any warning templates anyone puts on my pages. Although, I've learned my lesson thoroughly about following Wikipedia dispute resolution processes. I may be dense enough to think that in general when people act in a highly uncivilized way they are up to no good, but I'm not stupid enough to fail to see how advantageous this is on Wikipedia to the person throwing "racist" and other words around.
Name calling it is, far be it for me to waste my time on a higher and more civil standard, even when it's actually the normal, easiest, and most trouble-free way that people normally do things.
KP Botany 23:23, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Please cut it out. This is no longer funny, and I would think an administrator would have something better to do. KP Botany 23:36, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, great, now I get told by another editor on my talk page that if Tajik says it to me it's not a personal attack, but if delete part and paraphrase the rest of Tajik's words, I'm issuing a personal attack on him. How come you tell me there is no personal attack in Tajik calling me a racist, play games asking me to repost what I already posted, that you first complained was too much, then another administrator tells me that Tajik's words ARE a personal attack if I post them.
I can't believe how well administrator-fishing works on Wikipedia, and how poorly any attempt to use Wikipedi dispute resolution processes works. There is NOTHING I can do to get this user to stop harrassing me, especially when he is fully supported by administrators who say, no it's not a personal attack when he says it, but it is when I say it.
Someone called Tajik a Nazi, and that user was blocked. He is, however, allowed to call me a racist, with no foundation to it, and a Taliban supporter, which is worse for an Afghan than a Nazi, again with no foundation to it, and he is fully supported by administrators. What a nasty and dishonest double standard.
But, again, I got the main point, call people racists, that's allowed, and don't bother with dispute resolution because it will encourage more experienced users to mock you.
Yup, got it. He can call me a racist, without supporting diffs, and it's not a personal attack, but I can't accuse him of calling me a racist, using his own words, because that is a personal attack. Absurd.

Could you please get in touch with me--I have some important issues and I am new to this sort of communication. Are there real people with real names or is everyone hiding behind some sort of galactic Star Trek sounding nickname? I have posted a real story on the Marilyn Monroe fraud. I have worked on this for thousands of hours over the course of an entire year. The fraud has successfully been stoppedna dn now is part of Marilyn Monroe--histry. Do you understand that? The lawsuit is going to happen on May 7, 2007. People need to know about this and they also need to find out what I learned about June DiMaggio. Please help me with posting this--anybody --please help me with this.

I do not know how to do this the correct way. So laugh at me and make fun. But please-- post it here where innocent kids who like to read on and about MM--also will read the warnings about the fraud and the other side of the estate of MM.

My article was supported by newspaper articles from the LA Times etc. I am not making anything up here. I would be ahppy to speak to anybody about this.

I could also submit some images that I took of the scam.

Thanks for Devandalizing!

Thank you for devandalizing my talk page. I suppose now that I've started looking at more pages and getting rid of vandalism on some, that was bound to happen! One quick thing - 67.171.243.54 decided to take your warning off the talk page for that account, so I put it back. Finally - on the UNC-Duke Rivalry talk page, did you delete the comments for 67.171.243.54 due to profanity or...? Personally, I would have thought they would stay in since they're in the talk page for an article rather than the article itself. Thanks again! DukeEGR93 14:09, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. About a month ago, I tagged a talk page for speedy deletion as spam, which you subsequently deleted. The page has now been recreated by the same anon user. Since he has taken issue with my actions (search for your sig on my talk page), I didn't want to tag it again and embroil myself further with this person. I was wondering if the talk page should be re-speedied (either as spam or as a re-created deleted page), or should now go through the MfD process, or should just be left alone? By the way, it now isn't really spam, since it doesn't contain the link. So, I dunno. Just thought I'd ask for your input and opinion. Thanks for your time! --Storkk 19:23, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Luna Santin

I only found Wikipedia recently. And I’m gobsmacked. One can’t fail to be impressed with the collective power of this thing. It’s like the “Borg” from Star Trek. Assimilate and adapt.

While I was looking up “Drakensberg” and “Drakensberg-related” things and I couldn’t help but notice that you recently intervened on an external link spamming problem. But there’s quite a bit (I think) that you missed. In fact it’s so pervasive, it’s almost systematic.

I found it first on the “Tugela Falls” page, then on the “Giant’s Castle” page, then on the “Champagne Castle” page, then on the “Drakensberg” page and then on the “KwaZulu Natal” page. The questionable links are: www.drakensberg-tourism.com, www.antbear.co.za, www.drakensberg.net, www.drakensberg-tourism/giants-castle.html, www.drakensberg.net/giants-castle.html. www.drakensberg-tourism/tugela-falls.html, www.south-africa-tours/drakensberg.html, www.drakensberg-tourism.com/northern-drakensberg-accommodation.html and www.drakensberg-tourist-map.com. Then I started to find them on foreign language pages: de.wikipedia.org:80/wiki/Drakensberge; ca.wikipedia.org:80/wiki/KwaZulu-Natal. And I’m sure there are more – I just haven’t found them.

If you check the “whois” records you’ll find that the same person owns all these sites and their purpose is to promote the Antbear Guest House and certain other commercial enterprises. I’m sure that’s not what Wikipedia is about.

I’d fix this myself if I could, but Wikipedia is quite intimidating for a new boy and I’m going to have to feel my way through this slowly. Also it’s not straightforward: most of the discussion pages have either been deleted, are tied up with a special mountain project or aren’t watched. And you’re obviously very experienced. And in any event, controlling something as systematic as this is going to take more sophisticated intervention than I can offer. Hence I’m invading your in-box. I hope you don’t mind.

Kind Regards - Boeppens.

Hi Luna, I guess I'm invading your in-box too :) If you don't have time to look into this, let me know and I'll be happy to. Linkspam is one of my pet peeves because: A) I think it damages our credibilty, and B) Given how selflessly our editors work on this project, it really pisses me off to see people try to profit from it. Still, this was your mail and it's your call; I'm just willing to help if needed. PS - a big "Thank You!" to Boeppens for pointing this out. --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 07:18, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, I know you're busy putting out fires. Tomorrow I'll follow up on the info from Boeppens and verify. If it's promotional linking as "B" suggests, I'll put on my combat boots and go linkstomping :) --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 08:13, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"What we have here is a target-rich environment". Boeppens was right about the linkspam. In fact, Tugela Falls had five External Links which appeared to be different pages, but every single one of them led to "Antbear Guest House". I eliminated every such link that I could find, and I'll keep those pages watchlisted. Since I lack the academic background to make serious contributions to most articles, it pleases me that I can contribute in other ways, like this. Just let me know if ever you need something stomped on; my combat boots are at your service :) --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 19:14, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Doc Tropics, Boeppens here. Thanks. I see you haven't edited the foreign language pages. Is it a Wikipedia rule that they can only be edited in the language they're written in? If so, where to from here?
Hi Boeppens. I don't fully understand your question, but in principle you can edit a page that's in Korean (for example) as easily as you can edit one that's in English. The corollary of that is that sleazeballs can spam a page that's in Korean (let's say) as easily as they can spam one that's in English. If you create a user ID for yourself (which I strongly recommend), it will only work in the language in which you created it. In practice, most people who create a UID for one language find that they can create the same UID in a second or third language, and of course creating a UID only takes a few seconds (a convenience of which spammers take the fullest advantage). -- Hoary 09:35, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you 72.91.4.91 17:29, 15 November 2006 (UTC) Avyakt7[reply]

This is BK Luis Riveros11 again, as above. Anything that it not entirely inline with BKWSU PR is considered as vandalism EVEN if it comes out of the very same academic citations that he insists on using. Personal attack in an attempt to discredit me. 195.82.106.244 21:23, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy Luna

Thank you for responding to me. It's a long story about my user name. I went to IRC and asked any admin to check out my account when I saw that my name was NinzEliza, and they said that there is no way someone else could have changed my user name. So I've had to accept the fact that I read a z as an a for over a week straight, which worries and frightens me.

The admins told me to request a name change. I did and got it granted almost immediately. I then figured out that my old user name still existed and that anyone who wanted to use my talk page from a public discussion would get directed there. I asked for help, and was told to redirect the old pages to the new ones. I couldn't figure out how to do it, but another new user randomly redirected it for me. How cool is that?

On a side note...I talked to the new user and he is very anxious about "having something to do". In truth, I am as well. It's not that there isn't PLENTY to do, but I think both of us are desperately looking for a cozy, collaborative, niche or team that can make Wikipedia less overwhelming and is more suited to our respective unique talents. I actually started out responding to RFCs, which hasn't gone as well as I'd hoped (see page anarchism - oi) and is actually hurting my head every night. Any ideas from an experienced editor would be greatly appreciated.

On a side side note... When I came to your talk page last night I saw "racist" as I was scrolling down and stopped. I read KP Botany's posts and got curious. I went to his talk page, then I went to the page on Afghanistan. I spent about three hours reading the discussion page. I can safely say, from reading all of KP Botany's posts, that the above comments are pretty out of character. His posts on the Afghanistan talk page are extremely neutral, positive, and level-headed. He was just got caught in the middle of an extremely bitter and lengthy argument that was actually quite nasty on BOTH sides. I've never edited with the guy and don't actually know him, but he seems to be a really good editor. I don't know if you really care at this point, but I just thought I would throw that out.

Anyway, your response was much appreciated. ThanksNinaEliza 20:02, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Luna

Wow, I feel great that you would ask my opinion on the matter...:)

It's an immensely complex situation, and it all depends on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go. It also depends on how much you want to learn about the historio-ethnic politics of Afghanistan. I myself knew nada until last night - now I've go it up to the eyeballs.

Probably the most important thing to note is that KP Botany is pretty bitter and disillusioned right now. He isn't in a good frame of mind, if his posts to his own user talk page are any indication. I would love it if an admin could give him some positivity. He's getting it on all sides, but he really hasn't done anything wrong. I just see the whole thing descending into a vicious circle that ends up with KP leaving - Afghanistan isn't even the main area of his expertise. He works on a bunch of botany (surprise) related stuff and some other things as well. He's very prolific and productive (unlike myself :) ).

He's a little pissed (I believe) that NasirKand got banned indefinitely, seemingly at the hands of Tajik. This is really not the case, since NasirKand made some remarks about WikiPedia on the dispute page and actually said he hoped he would be banned soon. However, Tajik DID start the complaint, so in KP's mind Tajik has the admins wrapped around his finger, and can do no wrong - even though Tajik DOES do wrong.

There's some truth to this; Tajik had been constantly calling NisarKand racist in response to almost everything the guy said. He also called him racist on his talk page. Tajik never actually called KP a racist, but he would repeatedly accuse him of supporting racist views - even though KPs comments were unfailngly neutral. Sometimes KP supported Tajik, sometimes he supported NisarKand - and he often critqued both. Furthermore, even the claim of racism against NisarKand is arguable. For that I have to provide a little background I learned (please forgive me).

In a nutshell, Afghanistan is made up of a few ethnic groups (Pashtun and Tajik are two of them), and each of these groups is almost equally divided between Afghanistan and it's bordering States. Because of the history of Afghanistan being constantly invaded throughout her history, It's difficult to get an accurate record of what went on and when. Furthermore, each of these ethnic groups were governed autonomously for centuries. So the ETHNIC perspective of history varies widely from one group to another, and each group is loathe to give up their version of history for another - or perhaps even reality. In addition, there has NEVER been a census taken in Afghanistan, which results in the various groups claiming a significant majority over another at any given time.

NisarKand is Pashtun, and Tajik is, well, Tajik. KP is American, yet somewhat learned on the topic. I just spent a long time on lengthy summary of what actually went down on the user talk page, but when it got to it's fourth paragraph, I decided against including it. I saved it though, if you want it.

Here's the point: All throughout the ugly battle that ensued, KP kept his head and tried to intervene. At some point, KP just walked away from it, and according to him (on his talk page), Tajik followed him and started to debate with him on KPs page. I didn't check this out, but I do know that Tajik left four or five lengthy messages on KPs talk page on the 13th of November, even though KP hasn't posted on the Afghanistan talk page since October 26th.

So in answer to your question, I wouldn't presume to tell you what you should do, even if I had clear-cut answers - which I don't. I just hope that this information helps.

Best Wishes to you and thanks for your pointers, NinaEliza 06:51, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I saw you indef blocked User:Assbehonker1990. Since personal information was posted about the person he was defaming, should we ask to have that edit removed from history? --Ginkgo100 talk · e@ 20:30, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
