Malmsimp, you are invited to the Teahouse!
[edit]Hi Malmsimp! Thanks for contributing to Wikipedia. |
July 2014
[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia. I have noticed that some of your recent genre changes, such as the one you made to So... How's Your Girl?, have conflicted with our neutral point of view and verifiability policies. While we invite all users to contribute constructively to Wikipedia, we urge all editors to provide reliable sources for edits made. When others disagree, we recommend you seek consensus for certain edits by discussing the matter on the article's talk page. Thank you. Dan56 (talk) 19:34, 22 July 2014 (UTC)
- I now use edit summaries to explain the edits without leaving them blank. THANKS!

[edit]Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to change genres without discussion or sources, as you did at The 411, you may be blocked from editing. Binksternet (talk) 00:01, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
This is the final warning that you will receive regarding persistent genre changing without discussion on edit summaries or reliable sources from websites. If you continue, as you did at I Thought It Was Over, you WILL be blocked from editing without further notice. Binksternet (talk) 00:50, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
Reply: I know, this was from the time when MalmsImp was in its infancy and I didn't know what to do with Wikipedia. I used to edit genres without sources, so that is why I got these 2 messages up there. I wasn't a fully fledged user on Wikipedia at the time. :( JG Malmsimp (talk) 22:29, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

Refactoring talk page comment
[edit]Hi, is there a reason why you refactored a user's talk page comments in this edit? Cyphoidbomb (talk) 02:16, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
Reply: I deleted a portion of Talk:Peep and the Big Wide World, because it seemed very civil to me. I have reverted it for now. Thanks. JG Malmsimp (talk) 16:43, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
- Your removal is disruptive. The comment is 9 months old, is wrapped in collapses, and isn't directed at anyone specific. And, your edit leaves messy scraps behind, like a partial comment from the editor, no signature, and a slew of replies. That's not constructive. Since you don't seem to have the hang of policing talk page comments, I have to ask you to leave them alone and instead report comments you find objectionable to senior editors or admins. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:42, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
THANKS! JG Malmsimp (talk) 19:55, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
Bernard Sumner (New Order vocalist)
[edit]Hello! I am researching your request for semiprotection of the article Bernard Sumner. I am having trouble with it. The way I read the history, this is not a case of clear-cut vandalism, but rather a content disagreement between you and the IP about the appropriate genres for this musician. I see that you have made no attempt at the talk page to discuss this - just threats on the user's talk page, and SHOUTING and name calling in the edit summaries when you revert. (Word to the wise: your edit summaries and protection requests will be taken more seriously if you make them in a more calm and professional manner.) So: Semi-protection is not supposed to be used as a way of favoring one side (the regular user) over another (the IP) in a content dispute. See WP:Page protection: "Semi-protection should not be used... to privilege registered users over unregistered users in (valid) content disputes." The recommended approach to such an edit war is to fully protect the page, in hopes of getting the combatants to talk about it. I doubt if that will work in this case, and I fully understand that you believe your version of the genres is correct and the IP's version is wrong. So I have puzzled about how to respond to your request. Here is my conclusion: I will semiprotect for a few days, but I request you to change your tone toward the other person (that is, the IP, who is in fact a person). Stop shouting at them, stop calling them a vandal. Instead politely invite them to the talk page, and post a discussion there explaining why you believe your version is the correct one. I realize they are using multiple IPs so a usertalk page request may not work, but at least suggest the article talk page in your edit summary when you revert. If they don't respond on the article talk page, or if they respond but are not convincing - then you have a much stronger case now and in the future. --MelanieN (talk) 18:38, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
Reply: I'm not shouting, OK? Thanks.
P.S: This and other New Order/808 State articles are done by a Japanese LTA vandal by the way.
Malmsimp (talk) 10:18, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
Talk page comments
[edit] Please don't refactor other users' talk page comments as you did in these 3 edits at Talk:Oggy and the Cockroaches. Talk page formatting isn't particularly difficult. When you wish to reply to a discussion, indent your comment on a new line by adding a colon like this:
I'm tired.
- :Why are you tired?
- ::I didn't get enough sleep last night.
- :::Get some sleep tonight!
- ::::Good idea, thanks!
Additionally, there is no value to responding to a discussion that is four years old, as you did, or to conversations that have already been resolved. For these reasons, and since your reasons do not actively address ways to improve the article, your changes have been reverted. Please familiarize yourself with Wikpedia's talk page guidelines, as problematic talk page editing can become disruptive. Thanks. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 21:01, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'll try again
- JG
- Malmsimp (talk) 21:04, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
- Your edit here was also inappropriate. You don't have the authority to tell someone not to remove warnings from their talk page. They have a right to do that, even if irritating, however they cannot remove active sanctions, i.e. active block notices from their page until the block is over. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 21:34, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
- Striking out first part of warning above. In retrospect, I see that you were removing a comment that you found to be completely off topic. I get that. However, until you are familiar with normal talk page standards, like indenting, and things like that, I don't think it is wise for you to be removing content. I also stand by the second and third notes: there's no point in responding to 4 year old conversations, and users have the right to remove warnings from their talk pages. Apologies for my confusion. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 21:42, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
THANKS YOU TOO! :)

The Techno genre
[edit]Hello,
I've noticed that you've been removing techno genre from some of the electronic music group articles. In most of these instances, the genre label was unsourced (so their removal was fine). However, the genre was sourced in 808 State and Round & Round articles; I wanted to notify you that I've re-added the genres.
Also, can you please use the standart font size on the talk page discussions? I appreciate your work and caution, especially on battling the vandals. Thank you. Myxomatosis57 (talk) 21:07, 12 April 2015
I see. Thanks JG Malmsimp (talk) 07:53, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Purple Haze (Groove Armada song)
[edit]The article Purple Haze (Groove Armada song) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Non-notable song. No evidence of awards, charting or in depth coverage in independent reliable sources.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Stuartyeates (talk) 10:02, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Hello, Malmsimp. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Don't Look Now (Way Out West album), for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:
- edit the page
- remove the text that looks like this:
{{proposed deletion/dated...}}
- save the page
Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Sulfurboy (talk) 20:32, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Hello.
Why don't you do something about paring down the text in the Phil Drummond article that you removed the plagiarism banner from? If you look up Phil Drummond on facebook you'll find that most of the text is just copied from his facebook's "About" section. This is pathetic for an enyclopedia. Does his article even deserve to exist at all? If so, much appreciated if you cut it down a bit to non copypasted text 149.78.31.167 (talk) 18:45, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. I'm not going to patronise you with a template, but your warning here was unduly harsh for a newcomer. Please start at Level 1, or Level 2 if it is obviously vandalism, and work through the warnings gradually should an editor continue to edit disruptively. Your use of BOLD ALL CAPS comes across as "bitey" and may put off new editors, and starting at Level 4 was uncalled for. Please be civil at all times - we are all humans on Wikipedia, even the anonymous IP editors, and the bots are operated by humans too. Bear this in mind. --Ches (talk) (contribs) 10:38, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Duran Duran's former guitarist Alan Curtis
[edit]The article Alan Curtis has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no reliable references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted after seven days unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.
If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp/dated}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Wgolf (talk) 04:32, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Intensify is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Intensify until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. - TheMagnificentist 11:18, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Djum Djum
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Djum Djum requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. MassiveYR ♠ 09:45, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

[edit]Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that a recent edit of yours to the page Modeselektor has an edit summary that appears to be inaccurate or inappropriate. The summaries are helpful to people browsing an article's history, so it is important that you use edit summaries that accurately tell other editors what you did. Feel free to use the sandbox to make test edits. Using "FIXING" as a catch-all edit summary for 90% of your edits is very near to meaningless. McGeddon (talk) 08:40, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

After a negative complaint from McGeddon regarding "FIXING", from now on when you come into this website - my edit summary will change to "A general edit on article"
That way, I can tell other editors on the website what you did, so it is more understandable, rather than using "FIXING" as a catch-all edit summary for 95% of the edits.
Once again, thank you and welcome back again to Wikipedia

[edit]You may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you change genres in pages without discussion or sources. Walter Görlitz (talk) 15:44, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
- I haven't done anything - in most instances any unsourced genres will be removed.
Malmsimp (talk) 09:20, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
- You did do this. Is this really "a general edit on article"? I could see "removed unsourced genres. I could see many other options, but WP:GWAR is a problem and that's what this looks like. Better edit summaries might be appropriate. Walter Görlitz (talk) 13:09, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
November 2017
[edit]Please stop using "a general edit on article" as your edit summary. That tells editors nothing about what you've changed. Please describe what changes you have made. As Walter Görlitz noted above, you look like you're genre-warring when you don't explain exactly what you've done - selectively choosing which genres to retain and which to remove is genre-warring. You've been asked multiple times by editors to stop using this catch-all summary and you appear to have ignored every single one of them. See WP:Edit summaries. Ss112 09:51, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
- Hmm, in most instances any unsourced genres will be removed - you see - and yes it tells editors everything rather than leaving the summary blank.
JG
Malmsimp (talk) 20:50, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
- They're all unsourced—you pick and chose which to retain, so I don't "see". And it's not a general edit, it's a controversial edit, as are quite a few of your edits, evidently, and you need to start describing what it is you're doing. I just pointed out you've had multiple editors tell you it doesn't describe what it is you've actually changed on the page. "General edit" doesn't say what you removed or added. Edit summaries and genres
[edit]Hi. Please read further down articles before removing genres thinking they are unsourced, as you did at Song 4 Mutya (Out of Control). You do realise the lead section of an article is a summary of the contents of the article, and does not need to be sourced directly—infobox included—right? If not, you should. The genres are sourced in the "composition and lyrics" section. Furthermore, you edited Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub) and claimed in your edit summary you were editing for clarity. Well, maybe to you, but to others, it looked like you were adding further unsourced commentary to an already unsourced sentence. Just because it's already tagged with a "citation needed" notice does not excuse further additions to it. It would also be helpful to be more specific in your edit summaries about what exactly you did instead of a catch-all summary. You were asked to do this before and you just switched your summary for another generic one. It doesn't take that long to summarise what you did on that specific article. Thank you. Ss112 12:29, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
- Edit summaries like this are also not helpful. If you're telling yourself to go to sleep, that's great—you don't need to type it out for everybody else to see. This is also objectively not a minor edit. Ss112 12:33, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
- Well I have told myself - not anyone else to go to sleep.
JG
Malmsimp (talk) 12:08, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
- That is not addressing the issue whatsoever. It's not an appropriate edit summary, and it doesn't excuse what else you did on these articles. Also, don't edit others' talk page comments. I guess you also don't know talk page etiquette on WIkipedia. Read WP:Talk page guidelines. Ss112 17:02, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

- Thanks Malmsimp, I'm well aware Discogs is not considered reliable per WP:ALBUMAVOID. However, Destroy Rock & Roll does not use Discogs as a source whatsoever on the page. - Hi, sorry I meant to say - your edit summaries... pasting in a catch-all generic "Miscellaneous information edits on article (spelling, vagueness, extensive grammar, etc.etc" really isn't up to the mark. If you cannot state clearly the purpose of each and every edit then that edit should perhaps not be made. It's a good practice not to use the "minor edit" button - if it's a typo say so. Remove a comma? -say so. Explain yourself to yourself - if you're convinced then go ahead! :D Best wishes Captainllama (talk) 00:22, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

[edit]Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.
When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:
Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)
Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.
Edit summary content is visible in:
Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. You can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Thanks! Trivialist (talk) 10:05, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
Also, please give useful edit summaries. The ones I've seen appear to have random text unconnected with your actual edits. Thanks. Trivialist (talk) 10:09, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
- I know what the edit summaries look like.

Disambiguation link notification for October 26
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited The Alarm, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Craig Adams (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

[edit]Your edit on The Skinner Boys: Guardians of the Lost Secrets has shown disrespect and blatant action over our editing policy.
Although vandalizing articles on occasions that are days or weeks apart from each other sometimes prevents editors from being blocked, your continued vandalism constitutes a long term pattern of abuse. The next time you vandalize a page, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia without further notice
For those of you who are administrators, please refer to: Wikipedia:Long-term abuse/Awesome Magical Tales vandal.

- Hi, Malmsimp, this message above has been sent to an IP on the Australian Optus dynamic address pool, and almost certainly did not reach it's intended recipient. Such messages are probably not effective in deterring vandalism, and are more likely to reach an innocent party, causing distress.
- You might notice, if you review the offensive edits, that the edits predate your message by more than a week, and all offensive edits from this IP were within a few minutes of each other, as this nuisance certainly takes advantage of dynamic addressing to make edits. I must again stress the extreme unlikelihood that your message had any chance of reaching the long term vandal that you were intending to communicate with. Optus is a very large ISP and this message could have reached any one of over a million people.
- In future, it might be a good idea to be more respectful and civil with IP users, as they are often new to Wikipedia, and may feel threatened by such a message notification as the one you sent to this IP address. I encourage you to take another read of WP:GF WP:BITE and WP:AVOIDABUSE as I feel these guidelines could be very helpful in triaging disruptive edits from IP addresses.
- Although due to the nature of this particular vandal, you could have determined the dynamic nature of this IP address rather easily, in future if you are trying to determine if an IP is Static or Dynamic, a reverse DNS lookup (nslookup) or a whois of the IP could help. MOST IP addresses used by residential customers are dynamic.
Sincerely, 49.195.30.129 (talk) 12:35, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
- Good morning - thanks for the advice - unfortunately, the IP that you currently have is from a rather troublesome user from a couple of months ago - IPs change each time - as you've said, MOST IP addresses used by editors are flexible.
If you have any problems - please give me a shout on my talk page
Thank you for your attention

Legal threats?
[edit]Hi Malmsimp. I noticed that when you warned users for vandalism, you used wording that seemed to imply that the vandals could face legal consequences for their behavior. For example, at this talk page, you wrote, blocks will be enforced by administrative legal action
, and at this talk page, you wrote warrants may be issued as well
. Please be aware that under Wikipedia policy, threatening legal action is prohibited. I understand that we want to deter vandalism, but making a false threat of legal action is not the way to do it. I recommend instead using templated warning messages such as {{subst:uw-vandalism1}} (for a first offense), {{subst:uw-vandalism2}} (for a second offense), and so on. Thanks, Mz7 (talk) 05:00, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
- I wondered about that - thanks - I'll use templates

Please do not change electronic subgenres that are explicitly sourced as those genres
[edit]Hello. I've noticed that you've made quite a few recent edits changing subgenres of electronic music to just electronic music. You shouldn't really be messing with genres without a source anyway (instead, just remove them if they are unsourced), but you absolutely should not be changing genres where they are sourced. For example, several articles where you switched electronica to "electronic music" had electronica explicitly sourced. It does not matter that electronic music is "more broad", and even so, so what? If a review from a music critic explicitly labels an album or a group a certain genre, you, nor any user, are not to "correct" it or say "no, it should be this instead". Please stop changing genres unless you have a source. Further instances of this can get you in trouble with administrators and other users, and may lead to a block. I have asked you in the past to stop changing genres as well, so I think you're long overdue to stop. Thank you. Ss112 05:01, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
- There are actually two types - Electronic music and EDM are used for mainstream types - while electronica is made for music not necessarily made for dancing.
- I hope this helps.
- The editor above is quite knowledgeable in music, so I really don't think that what was they were getting at. They are saying, and I'm seconding it, is that make sure that any time you are adding or changing a genre, that you are doing so in accordance with a reliable sources that verifies it. Whether it means staying to to the source already present, or adding a new source yourself, it needs to be according to what sources say, and not your own interpretation or judgement calls on music genre. [edit]Hello, I'm Fram. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that you unlinked one or more redlinks. Redlinks are useful and can often be helpful, so we don't remove them just because they are red. They help improve Wikipedia by attracting editors to create needed articles.
In addition, clicking on the "What links here" link (in the tools listed at the left in desktop view) on a missing article shows how many—and which—articles depend on that article being created. This can help prioritize article creation. Please only remove a redlink if you are pretty sure that it is to a non-notable topic and not likely ever to be created. Thanks!
