I have seen you making excellent contributions to fish-related articles, so I am writing to ask for your help. I have been working hard on Asian arowana (Scleropages formosus) and have recently gotten it to good article status. I would like to make it a featured article, but I could really use the help of other users. Information about this species is hard to find in my country because they are illegal here. Any help you could give would be appreciated. --Ginkgo100 talk 23:46, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments. Can you help with the text of this image? Are stamps issued by the Thai government copyrighted? Is there any description of the fish in the picture? Thank you! --Ginkgo100 talk 22:25, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Portal:Fish

Hi, Melanochromis. The Fish portal looks nice! I'm sure you're still in the middle of arranging things, but I look forward to seeing it listed at Portal:List of portals and Wikipedia:Portal/Directory. Also, if you're interested in adding randomized selections and/or preparing the portal for featured status, I'm always willing to help. Just say the word on what types of help you might like and I'll see what I can do pitch in. Regards, Rfrisbietalk 22:37, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Thailand Portal thank you

Thanks for your work on improving the look of Portal:Thailand, and especially for choosing Cinema of Thailand as the featured article. — WiseKwai 10:50, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Seconded. Just one minor point - the Did you know section is for announcing new articles, so both of your additions don't really belong there as both articles are present for quite some time already. I have replaced them with a new article, well, of mine... I am looking forward to your further contributions on Thai topics or at the Thailand portal. andy 22:39, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Noted. I didn't know that was the convention for the Thai portal. I'll look for newer articles next time. Thanks for updating it !! --Melanochromis 23:07, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Portal tips

I have done a lot of extensive work (and so has Rfrisbie) to Portal:Business and Economics. I would like to bring it to Featured Portal status and I am seeking your opinion! Please leave your suggestions at the the Portal talk:Business and Economics about how to get this portal to featured status. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Hi and welcome to AAR,

I noticed that you are from Thailand. Our coverage of Asia is pretty bad in respect to their herpetofauna. Do you have any photos you can upload? It doesn't matter if you can't identify them, we should be able to if they are clear enough. Thanks. --liquidGhoul 11:02, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi liquidGhoul. Thanks for the welcome. Unfortunately I'm in Central New York and haven't been back to Thailand for quite a while. I probably wouldn't be much help with the picture upload. But maybe I can help you with the Thai language sources. --Melanochromis 11:16, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for starting up this project. Long overdue. I'm happy to help. I'd suggest worrying less about trying to be a "how-to" guide (there are lots of those on the web) but focus instead on the background facts. For example, different types of filters and filter media (pros/cons); add aquarium statistics to descriptions of important fish; create or expand articles for aquarium-specific concepts, such as fish-less cycling, filter bacteria, spawning triggers, etc.

There need to be articles about the fishkeeping industry. For example, which countries are most involved as exporters and breeders of fish, which countries buy a lot of ornamental fish, and what the different trends are (e.g., where are marine reefs popular, or arowana, or goldfish?). The value of the industry should be described in terms of money and jobs, and also the conservation issues, fish breeding/farming, release of exotic species into the wild, and questions of ethics (e.g., feeder fish).

We also need our own "stub" with a suitable graphic!

Cheers, Neale Neale Monks 10:10, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

I agree with you. I think I got a bit caught up when writing the project draft. I wanted to keep it short but once I started writing, I just couldn't stop. Feel free to edit or modify the project page though. I trust you. Originally I was hesitating whether to name it wikiproject fishkeeping or wikiproject aquarium fishes, but I chose aquarium fishes to make it in line with other project names (cat breeds, dog breeds, instead of cat keeping, dog keeping). But fishkeeping should still be our main focus anyway.
Like you said I think most fishkeeping-related articles are very much underdeveloped (except a few like marine aquarium). Yesterday I was browsing articles and stubs in the Category:Fishkeeping and realized that we need to come up with a way to do this. The fishkeeping article should probably be the first focus and it can be branched out, many of its sections can be expanded into full articles. At the present (15 December 2006), this article doesn't talk about the science of fishkeeping (water chemicals, filtration, lighting, tank set-up, etc.). Do you want to start with that?
About the fishkeeping industry, the article does have this section but it doesn't cover that much. Maybe we can expand it and/or split it up to a seperate article.
Anyway, I'm putting this fishkeeping article as our project "collaboration" and we'll develop it the way you suggested. And I'm moving our discussion to the project talk page so that other people can see and might be interested to help. Cheers, --Melanochromis 11:05, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Wat Phradhammakaya

Melanochromis

Hi User:211.72.233.9 and User:61.230.188.90. Your message was edited by two different IP addresses. Are both IPs the same or different persons?
First of all, welcome to wikipedia. Your contribution to the Wat Phra Dhammakaya article is appreciated and I encourage you to keep up the good works. However, I'll have to remind you that wikipedia articles are open to everyone to contribute. If you disagree with other editors, please try to discuss with them first before deleting their edits without explanation, or at least give out the reasons why you deleted it. You (and/or other anonymous editors with different IPs) have been deleting the contents for at least 18 times. Each time, someone had to revert it, and still the deletions continued. Several different editors already gave out numerous warnings but they were simply ignored. Such repeated deletions of other people works without explanation is simply not polite, and might eventually be considered vandalism.
And I'm not happy that you accused me of discrimination. If somebody else deleted your sections of the article without explanation, I'd revert it back just the same. Regards, --Melanochromis 14:39, 17 December 2006

Hi again anonymous user (with so many different IP addresses). I see you still repeatedly delete the criticism section, of both Wat Phra Dhammakaya and Dhammakaya Movement articles. Please read the talk page of both articles. Here's a quote from one of the editors who tried to communicate with you:
"Please stop removing the new and informational links at the bottom. These are mainly from legitimate media sources, and help to provide sources of information that will help promote NPOV. If you have a legimitate reason for their removal, please state so in the talk page so that we don't have to keep changing the wiki back and forth."

About the article Wat Phra Dhammakaya and other related articles, several editors have already asked you to stop deleting without an explanation and you completely ignored them. The parts you repeatedly deleted had valid supporting references from media sources. You can't just remove it because it's something you don't like. Like I and other people have been saying so many times, you will have to discuss it in the article talk page. If you think you have sources supporting your argument, then show them.

Philothai Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wat_Phra_Dhammakaya"

Philothai, there's no such thing as conspiracy against you. It's ridiculous to claim that there is such conspiracy specifically against you. Any good editor who happened to see legitimate contents removed would help revert it back just the same. Like I and other people have said, you can't delete contents just because you don't like it. If you have good sources for counterarguments, then use them, cite them, add them to the article. You spent much energy with your grievance and accusation in my talk page, why don't use it to actually improve the article instead. And please continue this discussion in the article talk page. There's no point for you to spam this message to everyone's talk page when we all can just discuss in the article page --Melanochromis 15:17, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Thai language question for Siamese (cat)

This question is not related to your main work here, but I hope you don't mind my asking. The article Siamese (cat) states that the Thai name for this type of cat is "Wichien-maat". Is this correct? If so, how do you write it in Thai orthography? It's mentioned in the History section, but could possibly go in the intro instead. Thanks for any help you can provide! --Ginkgo100 talk 17:58, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Ginkgo. The Thai name of this cat is วิเชียรมาศ. This can be written in English in many different ways due to the lack of standardized Thai romanisation system, so I think you can just go with the one that most people are familiar with. "Wichien-maat" sounds ok to me, although I'd rather write it "Wichienmaad" or "Wichienmard". --Melanochromis 23:58, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Fish, Chicken

I strongly disagree with you, those disambiguation pages are quite long with mostly unimportant wiki articles.

Chicken and fish are two words thats really have two meanings, the species, and the muscle tissue we humans eat. (Unlike say Cow vs. Beef or Pig vs. Pork). Many articles which have a VERY similar popular page (that can often be arugued to be the main page) often link to that directly as well as the general disambuation page for things like "phishing" which clearly should be on a disambiguation page. Example, Russia. If there is no objection, I will revert you changes. Epson291 10:19, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Hello, Melanochromis! Since it has been a month since you nominated the Fish portal for peer review, I hope you received good feedback on how the portal could be improved. If you would like, you could keep the portal listed at the portal peer review for more suggestions for improvement and ask the Wikipedians here for feedback. Also, if you think the portal is ready, you could nominate the portal for featured status. Either way, I hope you've received helpful reviews! Cheers, S.D. ¿п? § 01:22, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion. I think the portal itself is quite ready, but what's not ready is the people. I feel like the portal needs to have some readers and contributors before it goes though the featured nomination process. It's weird already that the portal has more reviewers than actual readers. --Melanochromis 21:59, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

I was just carrying on the theme throughout the goldfish breeds. I do think it helps though to notify people of the taxonomical classification of any animal even if it be a breed. --DSWebb 21:26, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes I think a breed box would be much better. The cat and dog layouts are probably the best. I would happily do it and I have a good standards source, but I'm not so sure on the origins. --DSWebb 17:09, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Fish larvae

Thanks for the message re fish larvae

I'm afraid I must disagree however.

"Fry" is a very anachronistic term for fish larvae, usually used for salmonid species.

I have recently done a scientific literature review and thesis on fish larvae, and I can assure you that larvae is the correct term for the initial life-stage of oviparous, teleost fish.

So I hope my addition to the Fish page has remained.

cheers

reference to intergeneric hybridization of common carp and goldfish

I added a link to a picture of a hybrid from a Tennessee DNR site. There are many references to such hybrids; they hybridize in the wild regularly, for some reason much more often in the NE USA than elsewhere. Hubbs, in his famous work on fish hybridization, often uses this wild cross as an example. Here are a couple of references that discuss this cross. I'm a newbie though and I'm having trouble with the reference feature, but I understand the link feature - thus I did it the way I did. If you would like to insert a reference correctly feel free.

Hi there. Congrats for launching the WP:Fishing. I thought I would never see this proposal ever realized. I have removed the tag. This image is not orphaned. It has been and is currently used by Cambodia Portal under fair use. --Melanochromis 00:52, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello, Melanochromis. An automated process has found and removed an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, and thus is being used under fair use that was in your userspace. The image (Image:Thaiflag emblem map by Melanochromis.jpg) was found at the following location: User:Melanochromis. This image or media was attempted to be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media was replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Please find a free image or media to replace it with, and or remove the image from your userspace. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 09:43, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

I'm removing the tag as this image is currently used by portal:thailand. I think there's an error with your bot as it can not detect uses of images by portals. --Melanochromis 08:47, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

I'm removing the bot's tag on this image for the second time. This image is fair use and is not orphaned as it is currently used by portal:cambodia. I think there might be an error with your bot as it cannot detect uses if images by portals. --Melanochromis 08:53, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

I'm also removing the tag of this image as this image is currently fair used by portal:cambodia. Like my comment above, I think there's an error with your bot as it can not detect uses of images by portals. --Melanochromis 08:49, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
There are replies on the bot's talk page for you... the long and the short of it is that fair use is not allowed in portal space per our fair use policy, point number 9, which states that fair use can only be used in article space. There are more comments though on the bot's page, in reply to your query, so I suggest you go check them out :) —— Eagle101Need help? 09:07, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

re: error with this bot? (Image:Cambodiaflag emblem map by Melanochromis.jpg)

that is not an error Fair use images are to only be used in the mainsapace. usage in the portal namespace violates our Fair Use policy. Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 14:55, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Fair-use images

I didn't catch the removal of the images from the header on Portal:Thailand until it was too late, and now I can't remember what it looks like. But it was a mighty fine graphic element, from what I can recollect. Is there any chance the image can be re-created from public domain/Creative Commons sources? Let me know if I can help. — WiseKwai 17:43, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

The image was a combination of the Thai map, the flag, and the emblem (the Thai royal garuda). You can see all these three images in the Thailand article. However, I think recreating that image will just get it deleted again. I tried to explain to the deleters but they insisted that the portal use of this image (particularly the garuda emblem) wasn't considered a fair use. Sadly, it seems like the same group of people have also deleted similar images from other portals too (although Portal:Japan and Portal:Malaysia still have their coat of arms). You're more than welcome to recreate a image for the Thai portal, but perhaps replacing the garuda with something else. Good luck! --Melanochromis 02:48, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, I remember now. The garuda emblem has always been problematic because it's copyrighted. At one point, it was deleted from the Politics in Thailand template because of that. Somehow, it was allowed to be restored. Fair-use images aren't allowed outside the "main space", which for some reason doesn't include the "main page" and "portal space". I've never understood the reason for the distinctions. The rule has recently been applied firmly to the main page, so if you see a Featured Article of the Day about something like a movie or record album, the images chosen to illustrate that article are sometimes pretty stupid looking. The fair-use conundrum is a pain, and at some point I'd like to find out more about Thai law to find out if indeed the garuda is really copyrighted, or if it can be sourced from somewhere in the public domain. That also goes for other images from Thailand, particularly photos taken by the Royal Household Bureau and the governments. — WiseKwai 05:52, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
