{{NowCommons}} review
Hi Mets,
your bot tagged Image:Electric cattle prod.jpg as reviewed, but the image doesn't meet the 6th criterium in the bot's documentation; I only tagged it with {{NowCommons}} 11 hours before. This is not a problem with me, but maybe you should review the criteria?
Regards, Phaunt (talk) 11:19, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, and thanks for your concern. The time requirements are frequently ignored by admins, and are generally considered to be unnecessary in most cases. As such, I do not have the bot deal with the requirements for time, leaving it up to the administrator whether or not to delete the image early (the bot, after all, can't delete anything). —METS501 (talk) 19:09, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Would it not be more correct to have three right angle indicators instead of only two?

- Can you explain what you mean? Any quadrilateral with 2 right angles is a rectangle (maybe also a square), and if it has 2 right angles it has 3. —METS501 (talk) 02:45, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Seeking help
I have created few userboxes on your UBX space. I felt that you want other people to create userboxes here so that userboxes can be found in a single place. In fact, I appreciate this your initiative. But, unfortunately, few people are trying to mark my activity as vandalism and it became a debatable issue once again. Could you please come and express your view regarding this issue? It would be a great help for me. Here goes the link Debate . Cheers - Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 19:02, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for your support. One quick question, did you mean by the second last line to delete the userboxe I created? (I'd ask Od Mishehu to delete the ones he has already deleted.). Cheers. -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 15:56, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

A request for your consideration regarding CAT:AOTR
Hello fellow Wikipedia administrators open to recall category member! |
---|
I am leaving you this message because recent events have given me concern. When Aaron Brenneman and I, and others, first developed this category well over a year ago, we visualized it as a simple idea. A low hassle, low bureaucracy process. We also visualized it as a process that people would come to trust, in fact as a way of increasing trust in those admins who chose to subscribe to the notion of recall. The very informal approach to who is qualified to recall, what happens during it, and the process in general were all part of that approach. But recent events have suggested that this low structure approach may not be entirely effective. More than one of the recent recalls we have seen have been marred by controversy around what was going to happen, and when. Worse, they were marred by some folk having the perception, rightly or wrongly, that the admin being recalled was trying to change the rules, avoid the process, or in other ways somehow go back on their word. This is bad. It's bad for you the admin, bad for the trust in the process, and bad for the community as a whole. I think a way to address this issue is to increase the predictability of the process in advance. I have tried to do that for myself. In my User:Lar/Accountability page, I have given pretty concrete definitions of the criteria for recall, and of the choices I can make, and of the process for the petition, and of the process for other choices I might make (the modified RfC or the RfAr). I think it would be very helpful if other admins who have voluntarily made themselves subject to recall went to similar detail. It is not necessary to adopt the exact same conditions, steps, criteria, etc. It's just helpful to have SOME. Those are mine, fashion yours as you see fit, I would not be so presumptuous as to say mine are right for you. In fact I urge you not to just adopt mine, as I do change them from time to time without notice, but instead develop your own. You are very welcome to start with mine if you so wish, though. But do something. If you have not already, I urge you to make your process more concrete, now, while there is no pressure and you can think clearly about what you want. Do it now rather than later, during a recall when folk may not react well to perceived changes in process or commitment. Further, I suggest that after you document your process, that you give a reference to it for the benefit of other admins who may want to see what others have done. List it in this table as a resource for the benefit of all. If you use someone else's by reference rather than copy, I suggest you might want to do as Cacharoth did, and give a link to a specific version. Do you have to do these things? Not at all. These are suggestions from me, and me alone, and are entirely up to you to embrace or ignore. I just think that doing this now, thinking now, documenting now, will save you trouble later, if you should for whatever reason happen to be recalled. I apologise if this message seems impersonal, but with over 130 members in the category, leaving a personal message for each of you might not have been feasible, and I feel this is important enough to violate social norms a bit. I hope that's OK. Thanks for your time and consideration, and best wishes. Larry Pieniazek NOTE: You are receiving this message because you are listed in the Wikipedia administrators open to recall category. This is a voluntary category, and you should not be in it if you do not want to be. If you did not list yourself, you may want to review the change records to determine who added you, and ask them why they added you. |
...My guinea pigs and the "A"s through "K"s having felt this message was OK to go forward with (or at least not complained bitterly to me about it :) ), today it's the turn of the "L"s through "O"s! I'm hoping that more of you chaps/chapettes will point to their own criteria instead of mine :)... it's flattering but a bit scary! :) Also, you may want to check back to the table periodically, someone later than you in the alphabet may have come up with a nifty new idea. ++Lar: t/c 00:02, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Dear MetsBot:
When I started to upload this image to commons, the software told me that an image with the same name already existed there and the thumbnail view it presented was the same image. I did not investigate further and should have.
Since then, I have uploaded the higher resolution image to commons, updated the information template to reflect the information that can be found here and now I am here, leaving a message about all of this along with an apology.
I should have looked more closely at the images and I appreciate a good bot who can and does do this. -- carol 13:33, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Transfered to commons: Image:Europe GDP 2007.png
Hi. I tagged this image as available on Commons, but your bot complained about the uploader (in this cause also author) not getting credit. So I have adjusted the page on Commons, it should be okay now. But I have an additional question: this file has some historic versions which we are asked to preserve on Commons by uploading them all in the right order, but that didn't happen here. Is that necessary (one historic version seems to be a mistake, another is a version with slightly different colours), and is it possible to correct this now? Greetings, StevenDH (talk) 11:54, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

MetsBot unsure
Hi Mets501 :) I just noted that MetsBot was unsure about the licensing of Image:Horace_Silver_by_Dmitri_Savitski_1989.jpg on commons, can you tell me why? I moved it using CommonsHelper, so that might be an interesting issue to look at (since the text was automatic and the same situation might therefore repeat itself)... I wouldn't want to take the rug from under you if you or your bot are still making use of this or related pages, but if you aren't planning on using it again I will send it to MfD or CSD#G6/G7 it, as it's a bit annoying (it doesn't fit into any of my nice tidy CAT:SDT sorting categories :D

Scepia
I had a question. Scepia seems to have disappeared or gone on a long wikibreak. No edits since October 4. I was wondering if it would be appropriate to draft some kind of notice for the top of his discussion page. I know that I, for one, didn't know about Userbox migration, and thought that he was just some kind of userbox master who created all those userboxen. and there are a number of other people who obviously thought the same, and have been asking about them on his discussion page [3] [4] [5]. anyways, getting to the point, perhaps drafting some kind of notice explaining that he may or may not be the creator of said userboxes, to check the history of the userbox to locate the original creator, and that he hasn't been active since October so don't expect a response. if this is totally off-base and inappropriate, I understand. xenocidic (talk) 01:42, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- I put something at User talk:Scepia#ATTENTION: Scepia is inactive.21 but preferably I'd like to move it to the top of the talk page, unless you think that would be inappropriate. xenocidic (talk) 18:31, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

MetsBot offline?
Hello Mets501. Say, what's up with MetsBot? The bot's work on images moved to Commons is sorely missed (as you can see by the unusually large backlogs on the two relevant categories). Hope you'll consider returning it to active duty. Cheers, Pascal.Tesson (talk) 02:58, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Actually, though I know deleting bots are not exactly popular, I'd be interested in arguing that MetsBot (or some specific bot working in tandem with MetsBot) should be deleting those which are clear-cut cases. I used to do a lot of this cleanup and step 1 was always to just identify the ones MetsBot said were ok and open lots of tabs to delete them. It's such a stupid waste of time. MetsBot suggestion
Would it be possible for MetsBot to "fail" an image review if either {{KeepLocal}} or {{NoCommons}} have been placed on the en Wikipedia image description page? Kelly hi! 22:23, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
I suppose you commonly get people asking about images they have created or uploaded. I am just stating that i did make the transfer (do i have to be an admin to do this as i am not). For the licenses i was trying to make them the same or similar. Also, i changed the file name during the transfer to Commons to be more in line with the other image as i am going to have a small series of maps (next up, Hull Trains). Finally i think both images should be kept as i made numerous revsions to this image but not all of these revisions were transferred to Commons, just the current version (as of April 2008). And i suppose i could have come up with better names but never mind, i'll stick with these. Simply south (talk)
Never mind on this. Per advice i asked for on this on the Help Desk, i removed NewCommons and MetsBot's message and left a separate message in the Summary section. Simply south (talk) 20:40, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
