Technical news

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

regarding a G10 deletion

Hi

I noticed this edit you made https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:OrenBochman&oldid=1022912961 . I was surprised and I'm not sure what this is about, what was the page's title?

OrenBochman (talk) 07:09, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

  • @OrenBochman: The title was User:OrenBochman/Adoption/Deletion/3, and I deleted it because it was an attack page, and a rather severe one at that. There was only one edit to the page, so either 1) you created it and forgot about it, 2) another person created the page while you were logged onto Wikipedia and you were away from your computer or mobile device, or 3) your account was compromised and another person created the page. Regardless, I will never restore it, and it's unlikely that any other admin would do so either. North America1000 08:08, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
A stalker writes: I can't see its content, but it seems to have been an example bad page for the purposes of User:OrenBochman/Adoption/Deletion/Test. Certes (talk) 10:13, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
Ok, Certes, I remember now!
I used to be active in the adoption program and this was part of the curriculum originally provided by my mentor and developed further by me. This so called attack page was part of the final test about deletion policies.
See the lesson here: User:OrenBochman/Adoption/Deletion
And the test here: User:OrenBochman/Adoption/Deletion/Test
I tracked down the original page - I think it is based on a real attack page. But I think you should not rush to delete all the other copies as they serve a educational purpose. However If you have Autowikibrowser you might change the school to Hogworts and the names used as well.
I not sure adoption is still "a thing" but I am developing an AI chat bot and I was thinking of using it with the old course notes, If I can get past the two factor auth of the toolserver that it ;-).
So I hope we set the record straight about why that page was around. In the future we should probably use something less offensive
See you round OrenBochman (talk) 12:24, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
@OrenBochman: I'm glad you figured out what was what with your edits. In the future, instead of creating a supposed mock attack page that includes a full name, and then stating really bad things about that name, you could instead just type on the page "sample attack page". Then it wouldn't get deleted. Admins and others don't know if the name you used is fictitious or real, there was no explanation for the page anywhere on it, and at the end of the day, it read entirely as an attack page. Better yet, if you were to do this again, in addition to simply typing "sample attack page", you would be well advised to include documentation about why the page is there in the first place. Hope this helps. Good day. North America1000 10:39, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

Are you sure ...

... that edit-warring at List of dog breeds is really the best way forward? Hasn't enough damage been done to the project already by arguing over these damned portals? Would it not be preferable at least to wait for the outcome of the discussion at WT:DOGS? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:03, 3 June 2021 (UTC)

@Justlettersandnumbers: I thought it was a misunderstanding on your part, in part because your edit summary when removing the link was "thank you, but not needed" (diff). When I restored it, I explained in my edit summary why a portal link is functional and appropriate ("Portals comprise an entire namespace, and they need links in highly relevant articles, such as this one, for readers to know about their existence. See also WP:SEEALSO"; diff). Ultimately, I assumed good faith that you may not have been aware of the need for portal links in highly relevant articles relative to a portal's topical focus, rather than edit warring. No matter at this point, because another user that shares your views about "these damned portals" has removed it again. So now it's two apparent WP:OWNers of the article against the highly normative action of adding a simple link to a portal. Sheesh, it's only a link, and it doesn't hinder the page or anything like that. My edit was based upon functionality, and the link's removal was apparently based upon WP:IDONTLIKEIT regarding portals both times now. Furthermore, your actions only serve to further orphan the portal, based upon your subjective views of portals. This does not improve the encyclopedia, it deteriorates it. Good day. Happy First Edit Day!

The Signpost: 27 June 2021

Notice

The article List of beaches in the United Kingdom has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This list-article is very incomplete, and even if it were to approach completion it would seem to serve little purpose. If beach-listing articles are deemed desirable it would seem better to concentrate on per-county lists such as "List of beaches in Dorset". Then, for example, the "England" part of this article could be a list of such county-based lists.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

DYK for The Jungle (San Jose)

On 18 June 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Jungle (San Jose), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Jungle (San Jose). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, The Jungle (San Jose)), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Portal:Olympic Games

First of all, thank you and well done for your involvement in updating the Olympic Portal. I would love for you to pay attention to a few things.

  • The selected image 6 was not really deleted and a quick search on Commons found it under the same name.
  • the selected article you add about Pierre de Coubertin medal. This article does not come close to being an "Featured Articles" or "Featured List". The goal of the selected article is that they will not only be related to the Olympics but also be at a high level of quality. Nimrodbr (talk) 07:38, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
@Nimrodbr: Thanks for your input. On subpages, it states that FA-class articles can be directly added, which I missed. However, I think this should be expanded to include GA-class articles. Otherwise, the portal will always have limited content, and limited potential to be expanded. I also strongly recommend removing the "nominations" process from all subpages, because nobody ever uses the process, like almost ever, for almost all portals. Additionally, I just added a table to the talk page, and notice all the FA- and GA-class articles that are available. See the talk page for my proposal there regarding article selection criteria, and please chime in there. North America1000 07:52, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
I agree that it is necessary to extend the criterion to GA-class articles as well. I did not delete your additon, but note that that list is very far from meeting that level as well. I will continue the conversation on the portal talk page in the discussion you opened. Nimrodbr (talk) 08:11, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
@Nimrodbr: Update: I changed Portal:Olympic Games/Selected article/18 to display the FA-class Australia at the Winter Olympics article. See the talk page for more information about the Ancient Olympic Games addition I performed. North America1000 08:19, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

It has been a bit. My life has been very busy ever since March 2020. You can probably tell by my contribution activity. I really miss doing Wikipedia and talking with other great editors like you. I am trying to ease myself back into WP.
