Northamerica1000, can you have a look at Wikipedia talk:Cleanup/Archive 12? I archived the previous year of the Talk page. Not sure that I did it correctly using copy/paste. - Hey WildStar, I've looked at it - I hope you don't mind me replying instead of NA1000, I did some archiving of the project talk page before - the only change I've made is put the discussion-closing templates back. Otherwise, it looks fine to me - copy & paste is basically the approach as far as I know, normally I don't think anything needs to be done beyond that. What could require some judgement would be deciding what to archive and what to leave - I think you've done well on that front, you don't seem to have archived anything that was still in need of action.
The only issue I can think of is that the project page and the archives contain a bunch of links to the "scope" discussion - people have often been linking to that discussion whenever they strike out part of a request that asks for the addition of sources. Some of those links will not have been permanent links and now be broken - maybe they should be turned into permanent links or retargeted to the archive version.I should say though, I think it was a fine decision to archive it, as it was not quite a while ago and not unresolved. - PPS: What you described here as subst'ing was not really subst'ing: subst'ing is done by typing
subst:in front of the template name after the double opening brace{{and then saving the page - it produces something that looks exactly like when the template is transcluded, except the template is gone - see WP:Substitution
- @WildStar and PJvanMill: Copy attribution is missing from this archiving, which is required as per WP:COPYWITHIN:
- Wikipedia's licensing requires that attribution be given to all users involved in creating and altering the content of a page. Wikipedia's page history functionality lists all edits made to a page and all users who made these changes, but it cannot, however, in itself determine where text originally came from. Because of this, copying content from another page within Wikipedia requires supplementary attribution to indicate it. At minimum, this means providing an edit summary at the destination page – that is, the page into which the material is copied – stating that content was copied, together with a link to the source (copied-from) page.
- I went ahead and added copy attribution in edit summaries for WildStar for these (diff, diff). In the future, please abide by this rule. Thanks! North America1000 12:13, 19 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Northamerica1000 : Actually, what is the policy on this? Because the more I think about it, the less clear it becomes to me.
- The one thing I know is that edit summaries are not the only way to do attribution - the source of the content can also be indicated on the page itself. In fact, it's a more direct form of attribution, because the reader is given the info by the page itself instead of first having to follow the "History" link. This method makes more sense to me for an archive, where practically all the content originates from one different page.
- But then I read the advice at Help:Archiving a talk page, where neither attribution in edit summaries nor with a note on the page are mentioned...? I can think of two explanations for this:
- Maybe the text of
{{archive}}, though it does not explicitly state that the content comes from the linked page, is considered good enough for a note? - Maybe the reasoning is that every comment on a talk page is signed and that the signature directly attributes the comment to its author?
- Maybe the text of
- Both of these seem a bit... incautious, though. So I'm half considering changing the notes atop the project page archives and the project talk page archives so they explicitly state that the content originates from the respective source page. (Because as you can see in the various page histories, I have not linked back to the source page in the e.s. of every archiving edit.) But it feels like either that should be done on every talk archive (or rather, there should be a change in the wording of
{{archive}}) or there is no need to do it at all. - But @WildStar, I agree with the recommendation to indicate in the e.s. of the removing edit to which archive page you're archiving it, not because it would be a copyvio to leave this out (it's not), but just because it's very useful information. Guideline and policy news
- Following consensus at the 2021 RfA review, the autopatrolled user right has been removed from the administrators user group; admins can grant themselves the autopatrolled permission if they wish to remain autopatrolled.
- Additionally, consensus for proposal 6C of the 2021 RfA review has led to the creation of an administrative action review process. The purpose of this process will be to review individual administrator actions and individual actions taken by users holding advanced permissions.
Arbitration
- Following the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Cabayi, Donald Albury, Enterprisey, Izno, Opabinia regalis, Worm That Turned, Wugapodes.
Miscellaneous
- The functionaries email list (functionaries-en
lists.wikimedia.org) will no longer accept incoming emails apart from those sent by list members and WMF staff. Private concerns, apart from those requiring oversight, should be directly sent to the Arbitration Committee.

- @Hurricane Noah: Short reply for now... probably more later. The portal looks good, lots of content and lots of articles to choose from. A vital action is to add links to the portal in relevant articles, relevant portals and article templates, so WP:READERS can become aware of the new portal's existence. Recent changes
A oauth_consumervariable has been added to the AbuseFilter to enable identifying changes made by specific tools. [1]- Gadgets are now able to directly include JSON pages. This means some gadgets can now be configured by administrators without needing the interface administrator permission, such as with the Geonotice gadget. [2]
- Gadgets can now specify page actions on which they are available. For example,
|actions=edit,historywill load a gadget only while editing and on history pages. [3] - Gadgets can now be loaded on demand with the
withgadgetURL parameter. This can be used to replace an earlier snippet that typically looks likewithJSorwithCSS. [4] - At wikis where the Mentorship system is configured, you can now use the Action API to get a list of a mentor's mentees. [5]
- The heading on the main page can now be configured using MediaWiki:Mainpage-title-loggedin for logged-in users and MediaWiki:Mainpage-title for logged-out users. Any CSS that was previously used to hide the heading should be removed. [6] [7]
- Four special pages (and their API counterparts) now have a maximum database query execution time of 30 seconds. These special pages are: RecentChanges, Watchlist, Contributions, and Log. This change will help with site performance and stability. You can read more details about this change including some possible solutions if this affects your workflows. [8]
- The sticky header has been deployed for 50% of logged-in users on more than 10 wikis. This is part of the Desktop Improvements. See how to take part in the project.

How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Recent changes
- When using WikiEditor (also known as the 2010 wikitext editor), people will now see a warning if they link to disambiguation pages. If you click "Review link" in the warning, it will ask you to correct the link to a more specific term. You can read more information about this completed 2021 Community Wishlist item.
- You can automatically subscribe to all of the talk page discussions that you start or comment in using DiscussionTools. You will receive notifications when another editor replies. This is available at most wikis. Go to your Preferences and turn on "Automatically subscribe to topics". [9]
- When asked to create a new page or talk page section, input fields can be "preloaded" with some text. This feature is now limited to wikitext pages. This is so users can't be tricked into making malicious edits. There is a discussion about if this feature should be re-enabled for some content types.

Recent changes
- English Wikipedia recently set up a gadget for dark mode. You can enable it there, or request help from an interface administrator to set it up on your wiki (instructions and screenshot).
- Category counts are sometimes wrong. They will now be completely recounted at the beginning of every month. [12]
Problems
- A code-change last week to fix a bug with Live Preview may have caused problems with some local gadgets and user-scripts. Any code with skin-specific behaviour for
vectorshould be updated to also check forvector-2022. A code-snippet, global search, and example are available.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 February. It will be on all wikis from 10 February (calendar).

Recent changes
- Purging a category page with fewer than 5,000 members will now recount it completely. This will allow editors to fix incorrect counts when it is wrong. [13]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 February. It will be on all wikis from 17 February (calendar).
- In the AbuseFilter extension, the
rmspecials()function has been updated so that it does not remove the "space" character. Wikis are advised to wrap all the uses ofrmspecials()withrmwhitespace()wherever necessary to keep filters' behavior unchanged. You can use the search function on Special:AbuseFilter to locate its usage. [14]

- @No Great Shaker: Aah, you're an English bloke (I checked out your user page). Well, lotsa great bands are from there. Pink Floyd, Led Zep and Cream immediately come to mind.
