Image captions
[edit]Thanks for adding so many wonderful images to articles. However, please provide factual captions that explain to the reader what they're seeing in the image. You tend to provide poetic captions that aren't useful to the reader. For example, "A cosmic hourglass" tells the reader nothing. I've changed it to "M1-63, a bipolar planetary nebula located in the constellation of Scutum (the Shield)" Other examples of your caption -> my revision:
- A Stellar Storm -> The dark cloud-like structures are dusty areas of the Milky Way that absorb visible light.
- Oh, What a Beautiful Morning! -> Morning view of Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory
- Guardians of the Galaxy -> Victor M. Blanco 4-meter telescope (left)
- Heavy Lifting at Vera C. Rubin Observatory -> Top-end assembly lowered by 500-ton crane
Also, captions should use sentence-case, not title-case. You can find more details at WP:Image captions. Happy editing! Schazjmd (talk) 18:40, 5 March 2021 (UTC)
Image MOS
[edit]Please don't add redundant images, undefined/unneeded galleries, and MOS:SANDWICH as you did here[1][2][3]. Wikipedia is not an image host and added images should have MOS:PERTINENCE and galleries should follow WP:IG i.e. galleries should have a theme/rational for being there and images should be captioned to explain their relevance to the article subject and to the theme of the gallery. Kitt Peak National Observatory is a United States astronomical observatory located on Kitt Peak in the Quinlan Mountains, 55 miles (88 km) southwest of Tucson, Arizona, in the Sonoran Desert and the Tohono Oʼodham Nation. With more than twenty optical telescopes and two radio telescopes, it is one of the largest gatherings of astronomical instruments in the Northern Hemisphere. The observatory was founded in 1958, and was administered by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory from the early 1980s until 2019, after which it has been overseen by NOIRLab. This photograph, titled A Breeze of Color, shows a portion of Kitt Peak National Observatory at sunset, and was taken as part of a 2022 photographic expedition to all the NOIRLab sites.
