Human evolution

[edit]

You deleted my section because this does not belong in the article. we can't cover the whole history of life on earth in every evolution article. There is no article in Wikipedia for the evolution of human line, which is extremely different thing than 'the whole history of life on earth', because it is just one ancestry line of billions. And if there were, the Human evolution article should have link to it. The other articles are not interested in human ancestry specifically. Also, it is the matter of great general interest and it would be absurd to suggest that Wikipedia readers should read that information from some hidden sections of 20 different articles instead. And if you are correct, why have you not deleted the same 'offtopic' information from Timeline of human evolution? Warbola 15:40, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for leaving a message on my userpage about Wikipedia in Sign Language using SignWriting. As I am aware, SignWriting is not in Unicode, correct? Taric25 15:34, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Photographer's Barnstar
For locating and uploading a hi-res version of the We Can Do It! poster I herby award you The Photographer's Barnstar. In a very real sense this is as much your featured picture as it mine. TomStar81 (Talk) 00:42, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cascading protection bug

[edit]

[1] Yeah, I noticed that too, and got awful concerned about the unprotected templates before I logged out and tried to edit them as an IP. Should we file a report about this?--Pharos 00:33, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just posted about my similar experience at the village pump (where a related discussion already was underway).
Yes, if no one has already done so, a bug report should be filed. —David Levy 00:42, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

really destructive thing we never state

[edit]

I can safely answer your emailed question here. We never say what that thing is, so I don't know what it is myself. GRBerry 01:27, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, at least it's not common knowledge :)--Pharos 01:29, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

University of Minnesota project

[edit]

hi Pharos! Thanks for your comments on student projects & thanks especially for your help with moving 1013-shishi's article back to userspace. I wasn't sure how to do that cleanly, but you helped immensely. 1013-josh 05:46, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to drop a note saying thanks for the information about the NOR. I didn't know that one couldn't use interview information in the articles, but it actually does make sense now that you mention it. So thanks for that information. 1013-andy 16:03, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pharos, thanks again for all your help with the 1013 Project articles. My students are learning a lot from their interaction with Wikipedians. They're starting to get the hang of this, and they seem to be enjoying themselves. "Final" revisions on their articles are due next Thursday, so please help look out for them over the next week. 1013-josh 07:09, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please unban my friend

[edit]

You banned my friend so we had to go to my house to write this. Please unban him. Hes the one that edited animal rights and the holocaust. Thanks a million! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.185.132.246 (talkcontribs)

Question about NPOV

[edit]

The article Criticisms of bullfighting was reverted by me after being edited by an anon. He replied on my Talk page and I have to agree with him to some extent, the article itself does not seem to have a neutral point of view. I see the article was split from Bullfighting at some point. I am not sure which or what policies apply here but inherently by its title "Critisisms" the article can never be neutral and thus will be waving the proverbial red flag to these kind of editors. What is your view on this? FelisLeoTalk! 21:50, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think moving it to the name you suggested is a good idea, Bullfighting and animal rights sounds a lot more neutral! FelisLeoTalk! 13:54, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

I am de original editor of Cueva de La Pasiega in Spanish Wikipedia. I want to thank you the suggestion of translation. And, even if may level of English is low; I am disposed to help in the work. If you have questions, perhaps over the bibliography, you can stand by me.

Thanks--Locutus Borg , Talk to me 15:46, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please be aware that you are at three reverts on this template. Please use the talk page instead of reverting further. Naconkantari 03:30, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Caption

[edit]

Pharos said: Please see my note at Wikipedia_talk:Today's_featured_article/April_26,_2007#Putting_caption_directly_in_the_box. Thanks.

I'm ambivalent either way, I'm just aware that it's never been done this way before. Flip it back if you would rather - I try not to mess with Featured Article space too much. Thank you for your note. Bobo. 05:01, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pharos said: The "misleading image" complaint has been a bit of a problem previously when we've had to use images not of the direct subject, so I hope this will be a way to deal with the situation in future. Thanks for your understanding.

I absolutely understand. Thank you once again for contacting me. Bobo. 05:17, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

George Washington (inventor)

[edit]

Kudos to you for this excellent April 1 Featured Article :) Together with someone else, I have translated it to Dutch (see nl:George Washington (uitvinder)), and it's now a Featured Article Candidate over there as well. I'll let you know if and when it gets approved. But one brilliant idea may just have landed you two Featured Articles in one go :) AecisBrievenbus 23:34, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reverting

[edit]

Hi. Thanks for reverting the edits made by an anon, as you did to Talk:Seung-Hui Cho. Doing so can be considered reverting vandalism and fraud. I have already warned the user. I was wondering why my comment sounded weird, when I discovered someone vandalised it. Thank you for considering helping to revert fraud instead of leaving it vandalised. I was surprised that my comment had been a target of vandalism, this had only happened one or two times before. Thanks for reverting anyway. Thank you. (PS. Yes, this is meant to be partially a parody of the warning template, and I usually use a hand-written version of the template similar to the original one but with changes made according to how the user edited.) – AstroHurricane001(Talk+Contribs+Ubx)(+sign here+How's my editing?) 23:43, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yom HaShoa

[edit]

Shouldn't we be talking about when it was observed in the US, as the incident happened in Blacksburg? I'll be glad to email my Rabbi and check.--Beth Wellington 21:12, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message on my page. It's not an othodox holiday; some orthodox Jews don't celebrate it at all. The question becomes, since there was no conflict with the Shabbat in the U.S., whether the date is moved to coincide with Israel. I went aheah and called my Rabbi and left a message to call back to straighten this out. --Beth Wellington 21:33, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The conservative movement also lists it as April 15, with the eve on April 14. See [2]--Beth Wellington 22:29, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tribeca

[edit]

Hey Pharos - thanks for the shout-out. Yes, my press pass *does* say Wikipedia. I simply wrote Tribeca FF and pointed them to my User page for Wikipedia, and worked with them on obtaining the pass. I have to say, I've lobbied for Wikimedia Foundation to issue press credentials to worthy Wikipedians. Wikinews currently has an accreditation system for press, but they are real jerks over there - I'm not the only person who has been told to "bug off" by them. They don't have a wiki-attitude with the other projects at all. I was told "Wikinews is for Wikinewsies!" even though, you know, they'd benefit from a guy in New York City who obviously can take some good photos and finds way to get into events. Oh well - Woody Guthrie - awesome! --David Shankbone 12:40, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Protecting images at Commons

[edit]

When you protect images at Commons, they are not automatically protected on Wikipedia if we have a red page on this end. Please put an mprotected tag on such MainPage images to make the local Wikipedia image page blue. Thanks.--Pharos 21:11, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

1. Images with filenames that already exist at the Commons cannot be uploaded here by non-sysops. Upon making an attempt, such a user receives this message. This has been true since 2005 (long before the cascading protection feature was added). Otherwise, why would anyone have bothered to protect images at the Commons if they still had to create a Wikipedia page and manually protect it? It would have been easier to simply c-upload the images and protect those.
If you wish to confirm this, log into a non-sysop account and attempt to upload any image that already exists at the Commons (but not here) under the same name.
2. You're also mistaken about the nature of cascading protection. Transcluding a nonexistent page (a "redlink") prevents its creation here (but not at the Commons) by non-sysops. (This is the basis of Wikipedia:Protected titles.) Upon making an attempt, such a user receives an "Upload warning" heading and a "Protected page" link.
If you wish to confirm this, log into a non-sysop account and attempt to create/upload any page (including an image) redlinked at Wikipedia:Protected titles/Current month. —David Levy 23:10, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, while logged into your sysop account, note the cascading protection message that appears when editing the nonexistent Montefiore100.jpg description page. Then see what appears when you attempt to edit it while not logged in as a sysop. —David Levy 23:20, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

2007-05-14 POTD

[edit]

Just a head's up -- the POTD for 2007-05-14 is animated, so don't c-upload the one that's shown on the "protected version" -- I've already made that into a redirect to the real image, which is the one that should be c-uploaded. Thanks. howcheng {chat} 05:31, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pharos - I'd be happy to put a system diagram together if you can send me a reference for system components, or an example of what you'd like the final version to look like. Debivort 23:21, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
