News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • There is an ongoing request for comment to streamline the source deprecation and blacklisting process.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • Following the banning of an editor by the WMF last year, the Arbitration Committee resolved to hold a Arbcom RfC regarding on-wiki harassment. A draft RfC has been posted at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Anti-harassment RfC (Draft) and not open to comments from the community yet. Interested editors can comment on the RfC itself on its talk page.

Miscellaneous

  • The WMF has begun a pilot report of the pages most visited through various social media platforms to help with anti-vandalism and anti-disinformation efforts. The report is updated daily and will be available through the end of May.

Bot mistake

Hello!

What happened here: Special:Diff/234996626. I know it's from 2008 but still.Jonteemil (talk) 04:17, 4 April 2020 (UTC)

Seriously? April Fool's Day was on Tuesday, you know.
I'm not going to waste my time trying to debug something that was caused by code that's probably changed numerous times in the last 12 years. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 12:25, 4 April 2020 (UTC)

Redirect for close single quote character

The redirect you placed in there shows the straight single quote and lists quite a few things this will never be used for (such as opening quotes). The only ambiguity is whether the close quote or typographic apostrophe is inteded. So I tried to fix the actual page to explain the two ambiguous ones. Would rather not be an real disambiguation page because every link would be orange.Spitzak (talk) 03:32, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Help Article editing

Hello,

I do not have much knowledge of Wikipedia's edits and references. And I don't know much English either. I request you to edit the Draft:Ranveer Allahbadia & Draft:Amit Bhadana (yutuber). I hope that will not disappoint me. Thank you Mr. Bikaneri (talk) 06:41, 7 May 2020 (UTC)

Estimate of the Situation

  • Hi, R'n'B. Why do you think someone who types "Estimate of the Situation" into the search box is likely to be looking for an article about ufology?—S Marshall T/C 12:15, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
    • Currently, there are several Wikipedia articles that contain links to this title. They all are articles that relate to UFOlogy and/or conspiracy theories. If someone clicks on that link, it is completely useless to take them to the Estimate disambiguation page, because that page does not link to any topic relevant to what they were reading. I might as well ask you: why do you think that someone who types the specific phrase "Estimate of the Situation" into the search box is likely to be looking for an article on statistics, pricing, a horse, or government budgeting? --R'n'B (call me Russ) 12:30, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
      • I think it's a pretty vague thing to put into a search box so a disambiguation page is the right destination. The What Links Heres could be easily converted to pipe links.—S Marshall T/C 13:30, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

Arbitration

  • A motion was passed to enact a 500/30 restriction on articles related to the history of Jews and antisemitism in Poland during World War II (1933–45), including the Holocaust in Poland. Article talk pages where disruption occurs may also be managed with the stated restriction.

Need help at Template:Countries of North America on Commons

Hello, I recently updated commons:Template:Country label because it was showing Trinidad & Tobago in South America, not North America (it's also in the Caribbean). Now, T&T is showing double in commons:Template:Countries of North America (it should only be under countries, and not territories). Would you know how to fix this, or point me to someone that would be able to help? I saw that you also edited the template. I appreciate it, thanks! Funandtrvl (talk) 05:45, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

I believe that it's fixed, I modified commons:Module:Countries/North America, which had TT in both the countries and other territories categories. Funandtrvl (talk) 19:00, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

" (disambiguation){{!}}"

Check this/this. Only " (disambiguation)" was to be added after x and not x" (disambiguation){{!}}" before. --5.43.67.141 (talk) 19:31, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

  • The {{!}} was added because a number of users were opposed to allowing the bot to alter the visible appearance of hatnotes. However, I have no objection if you want to do it manually. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 23:38, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

Djallonké (sheep breed)

Hello,

I was wondering if you could fix the Infobox code of the Djallonké sheep breed page?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djallonk%C3%A9_(sheep_breed)

Thanks in advance 😊👍 KAMK1 08:35, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

@KAMK1: Hi. It looks like you created the infobox using some non-printing characters that the template software interpreted as non-whitespace. I can't tell what they were, but I replaced them all with space characters, which seems to have fixed things. P.S. Instead of providing a hyperlink to the Mobile Wikipedia page, it is better to provide a wikilink like this -- Djallonké (sheep breed). --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:05, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
Also, I have moved the page to the title Djallonké. Since we don't have articles about any other topics with that same name, there is no need to disambiguate the title. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:06, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello thanks for fixing infobox. Could you revert name back to "Djallonké (sheep breed)," since there is also a page (Djallonké people) see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yalunka_people

Hello Editor,
I am a new editor on Wikipedia with over 200 edits. I have disambiguated many links and I want a review on my performance. Thanks--YashPratap1912 (talk) 04:00, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
