Images for Clavaria pyxidata article

[edit]

Hello Joe Chill. Thank you for your interesting article. I noticed that it didn't have any visual representation to compliment the text. Randomly searching the Internet, I believe I've found some free information with several pictures old enough to be in the public domain. Please take a look at this book: Project Gutenberg's The Mushroom, Edible and Otherwise, by M. E. Hard. With a search for Clavaria pyxidata you can find the specific photograph. Images can be tagged with {{PD-Gutenberg}}.

I hope that you can extract useful information from the page. Please answer here if you have any further comments. Thanks. --173.52.244.51 (talk) 06:03, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Survey on quality control policies

[edit]

As part of a project funded by the European Commission (QLectives), we are collecting and analysing data to study quality control mechanisms and inclusion/deletion policies in Wikipedia. According to our records, you participated in a large number of AfD. We are currently soliciting editors with a long record of participation in AfD discussions to send us their feedback via a very informal survey.

The survey takes less than 5 minutes and is available at this URL. Should you have any questions about this project, feel free to get in touch.

Thanks for your help! --DarTar (talk) 10:19, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You have recently participated in discussion at an AFD for a broadcast station. I have recently posted the above topic on the talk page of the notability guideline for organizations and companies, to see if there is interest in adding language related to the notability of radio and TV broadcast stations to that guideline. Your input would be most welcome. Thanks. Edison (talk) 01:59, 9 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your note on my talk page

[edit]

I'm now officially totally confused. As far as I can tell, you neither wrote that article nor participated in the AfD discussion thereof. Are you saying that you are Jon Agee, and that you believe I knew that? Please explain. All I was doing was making a good-faith nomination of a book that did not seem to me to meet the standards of WP:BOOK. --Orange Mike | Talk 01:34, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I seldom nominate something like that with an accusatory tone, unless it's obvious spam (which this was not). I was merely annoyed by the excessive use of pull quotes, normally a feature of advertisements, not encyclopedia articles. --Orange Mike | Talk 01:43, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Joe. No problem. It's cool, it's cool. Didn't mean to be gruff, I'm just passionate about my little editing area. ;-) For various reasons-- age of the films/sources, access to sourcing, language-- it's a challenging area to work in. There are hundreds of such films produced in Japan every year and just a few of them are of high enough notability to support an article. Part of the challenge is identifying those few. I didn't start the article on this particular film, but it happened to be one of them. Regards. Dekkappai (talk) 00:17, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Talk page stalker here. I've assessed and approved your (amended) DYK - congratulations - but the answer to your question is that there is a substantial backlog at DYK and generally nominations that have been in the queue longer will get priority over yours, which can lead to a wait of up to two weeks before your DYK makes it to the main page. If you'd like to see your DYKs approved sooner, consider reviewing some DYKs submitted by other people, to help reduce the backlog! - DustFormsWords (talk) 13:36, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nightmare Legacy

[edit]

Please read WP:NOTE. A topic is presumed notable if it has received "significance coverage" from third-party reliable sources. First, two reviews is not "significant coverage". Second, one of those sources isn't even a reliable source. You cannot just grab any review off the web and claim that supports notability. Not to mention the fact that this is a documentary, not a feature film, the requirements of notability are little more stringent. In addition, you should probably read Wikipedia:Notability (films), specifically the "general principles" section that clearly show that this documentary does not meet the film notability guidelines.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 01:41, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Again, reviews do not necessarily make something notable. If you disagree with my assessment, I suggest you post a discussion at WP:FILMS to get a true consensus on whether this topic deserves a page to itself. You should know that just because something might be notable (and this documentary isn't), doesn't mean that it needs a page to itself.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 01:44, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Where exactly on either page does it say "reviews make the film notable"? It doesn't say that.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 01:46, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Reliable sources that provide S-I-G-N-F-I-C-A-N-T coverage. The operative words are "significant coverage". Reviews do not provide significant coverage, just plain coverage.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 01:49, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Manga-Manhwa

[edit]

manga, and manhwa are too different things, sure they look vastly alike, but manhwa is specifically from korea and has notibly been different. One important aspect of manhwa are the names, and you read it normally. Manga is different because it's red backwards. American manga would just be called "American Manga" or "graphic novel" depending on it's label. authentic manga is from japan.;18:56, 10 May 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bread Ninja (talkcontribs)

To clarify and expand on what Bread Ninja said, manga is, by its very definition, a comic which is originally published in Japan, intended for consumption by a Japanese audience. Manhwa, on the other hand, refers to comics originally published in Korea (probably almost exclusively South Korea, but that's neither here nor there), for consumption by a Korean audience. In addition, like all Japanese printed material, manga is printed right-to-left (which is how Japanese is read) whereas manhwa is printed left-to-right (which is how Korean is read). Recast is hardly the first example of a licensed manhwa series being promoted in the U.S. as a manga series; indeed, it's par for the course with Tokyopop. What a licensor sells a series as, however, does not change what it is, and there is absolutely no aspect of this series I can see which would justify a "manga" label instead of "manhwa". If you'd like to get further opinions, though, you're more than welcome to present your case at WT:ANIME#Manhwa vs manga. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 19:24, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, there's more information about the English release in the section than in the infobox. Joe Chill (talk) 19:27, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If anything it could possibly be considered "Korean manga" since that redirects to manga, but furthermore, it can be complained to tokyopop and say it's manhwa. Tokyopop is famous for calling alot of work "manga"Bread Ninja (talk) 19:41, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Bread Ninja, do you find anything wrong with adding information about international publications? Two other editors do despite many articles being like that. Joe Chill (talk) 20:01, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jumping in,
I see two issues with the Big section for the English release. First you redo the explanation of Manga vs Manwha in the said section. Second how much room does it leaves to the others releases that should in prose form: Korean, French & German. That section solely dedicated to English release will create something unbalanced in favor of the English release thus constituting an undue weight issue.

All this said i'm for a rewrite of the whole stuff into a section covering all the release and not just the English one. The issue around Tokyopop release it as Manga fooling reviewer along the way should be mentioned in two sentences but re-explaining the difference between Manga & Manwha is out of question. --KrebMarkt 20:07, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Does ANN count too? i thought that also would work ssincer it calls it a manhwa aswell.Bread Ninja (talk) 20:46, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

i think what also could help if the original cover was placed.Bread Ninja (talk) 16:44, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Depends of what you want to emphasize. English cover if you want to point at Tokoypop releasing manwha as manga. Korean cover if you want to emphasize its Korean origin. Then again i don't have the slightest idea on how it's dealt by the Comics project standard. --KrebMarkt 17:00, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Comics project doesn't really have any such standard; they focus much more on American and European comics - manhwa and other East Asian (well, pretty much all other) comics are severely neglected. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 02:26, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
tokyopop has released many manhwa under the name manga. So i think it should be promoted to korean origin. this is very similar to the same situation with manga.Bread Ninja (talk) 17:02, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: DYK nomination of Pizzo Coca

[edit]

Hello, I'm relatively new to this type nomination process and did not want to junk up the template page with newbie questions. Is the 318 characters a count of just the characters that appear in the article? This stub will be hard-pressed to come up with another 1182 characters to bring it up to 1500 characters. I thought it was good because it has 2,256 bytes. I will see if I can find additional sources that can be cited. I have your page on Watch and will see what your reply is here. Thanks in advance. --Morenooso (talk) 22:52, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I use a Page Size tool that counts the characters with just the text. DYKs have to be at least 1,500 characters. For the Page Size tool and directions for DYK, read WP:DYK. Joe Chill (talk) 22:55, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. I just found a larger Italian Wikipedia article on Pizzo Coca. The first one that was listed was a stub. This Pizzo Coca it.wikipedia.org has more information and appears to be sourced by four Italian cites. Do you know how to port over an article like this and could that be used for the character count? --Morenooso (talk) 22:59, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know. I've never dealt with before. You can ask questions on the talk page of WP:DYK. The cool thing about DYK reviewers are that they are patient so they are great help (I wouldn't be reviewing articles if I never asked for help). Joe Chill (talk) 23:03, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. --Morenooso (talk) 23:05, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The nomination should now exceed the requirement thanks with an assist from Burpelson AFB. Going back and forth from the Google translations is killing me. --Morenooso (talk) 05:40, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WiZiQ Article for Deletion

[edit]

Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/WiZiQ

Joe Chill,

With respect to WiZiQ, I've added two more sources. One is from Mashable which is a pretty major source on the web, and another is from a site called Silicon India which does not have as much traffic as Mashable but is according to LinkedIn actually a fairly major site [2] ("most trusted source for news and information", "top 4 in the IT News and Media category").

Note also that if you scroll down on the LinkedIn page it says at the bottom in little gray print:

This LinkedIn Company Profile was created by LinkedIn and is about siliconindia. This page is not endorsed by or affiliated with siliconindia. For questions regarding LinkedIn Company Profiles, contact us.

So I would say that there are a total of at least three reliable sources:

  1. . Sramana Mitra's blog -- She is a columnist for Forbes as we talked about on the WiZiQ articles for deletion page.
  2. . Mashable article -- Mashable, a high traffic Internet news blog.
  3. . SiliconIndia article -- SilcionIndia is described by LinkedIn as a prominent and reliable website.

And all of those articles are basically entirely about WiZiQ so they meet significant coverage.

Let me know if you feel this is enough to change your vote.

U.S. Space Exploration History on U.S. Stamps

[edit]

Greetings Joe I am amazed that you found the new page, U.S. Space Exploration History on U.S. Stamps...only five minutes after it was first launched! Do you have some sort of 'radar' that alerts you to new articles? Amazing. I am also working on a quite larger page in my user space: American History on US Postage Stamps. If you have the time check in and leave any thoughts on the discussion page there. Btw, what is DYK all about? In any event, thanks for the encouraging words. All the best. Hey there, re your withdrawal comment at the AfD, "Second: It doesn't matter that I prodded it 2 minutes after creation." Well, it probably matters to the new editor who created it and thinks they must have broke the wiki laws. (And to those who harbor a secret love for Garrett Morris.) But, on the other hand, you are pretty fair about withdrawing a nom when sources are found (and its unlikely they would have appeared for this one without the AfD nom.)--Milowent (talk) 01:22, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I tried a few different ways of getting to the preview on Google Books, but it says it's unavailable. Maybe it's because I'm not in the US; there could be different availability due to copyright reasons, which would have led to the confusion. GaryColemanFan (talk) 01:54, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
