Adminship

[edit]

Hi, Sergei! In general, when a user is a diligent Wikipedian, someone usually notices and nominates him/her. However, if you don't want to wait for that to happen, you can submit a self-nomination. The page for requesting adminship is located here (there is a good explanation how to format and submit an entry there, but the bottom line is that you'll have to explain why exactly you want to be an admin and why you being an admin would be beneficial to Wikipedia, as well as to be ready to answer any questions folks might throw your way). A voting process then commences, and if a significant majority supports you by the end of the voting period, you'll be promoted. All in all, however, the person applying for adminship have to have been with Wikipedia for a while (at least a few months); often the applicant's editcount (the number of edits they made; yours is available here) is considered in making a decision (there is no strict limit, but in practice folks with less than 2,000 edits don't really have any chance to succeed). The reasoning behind this is that the person willing to be an admin must understand how Wikipedia works, and that understanding only comes with experience. Thus, my recommendation for you would be to continue enjoying editing Wikipedia now and think about adminship later. When you are ready, you'll know it :)

I should also mention that if fighting vandalism is the only reason why you want to become an admin, it will most likely not be viewed as a good enough reason to support you. Admins don't really have that many more powers enabling them to fight vandalism more effectively; admin powers are more helpful in doing general cleanup and maintenance. You might want to look into using one of many automated tools, which are in fact more effective in fighting vandalism than any of the powers admins have.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 20:48, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just a quick note, I notice you've gone ahead and created an adminship request. I'm afraid I can almost guarantee that at this time, your nomination won't be successful and you would be best continuing to edit, in a few months someone will notice you and nominate you for adminship. Hope this helps. Nick 22:56, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:A dmitrij pevtsov.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 21:06, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A discussion is happening right now on the fate of UFC 84. Because the outcome of this discussion could affect other MMA event pages and how/when they are created, your input would be greatly appreciated. The discussion is happening here. Thank you for your assistance! Gromlakh (talk) 17:48, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Banditskiy_Peterburg_Advokat.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 02:40, 22 February 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Nv8200p talk 02:40, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your comments to other editors recently on Talk:Fedor Emelianenko have crossed far beyond the line of incivility. Regardless of whether or not you agree with others' viewpoints, resorting to name-calling and personal attacks is not a constructive way of dealing with disputes. It's also an extremely serious violation of Wikipedia policy. If you continue to be uncivil in your dealings with other editors, it will result in you being blocked. Please tone it down. repsonse to accusation of Russophobia

[edit]

well, that wasn't very rational... i've been accused of being anti-French, English (that's interesting), Arabic, Portuguese, but thanks for the new irrational accusation. The point is, which I already made, is that the article is about what the ethnologue says. The article on Russian is another matter, using seveal sources. Please read what people say before making accusations. Spacebo bolshoi Drmaik (talk) 06:45, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Although everyone is welcome to contribute to wikipedia, the edits one makes have to be constructive, however, the ones that you made on article Georgia (country) did not appear to be constructive. What you did is against the consensus on the Wikipedia as well as the world. If you will try to overturn the consensus unilaterally, violate the three revert rule, and engage in edit warring, it might constitute vandalism and you are very likely to be blocked.Next time you will hopefully behave responsibly.--Satt 2 (talk) 18:00, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Warning
Warning

Please refrain from undoing other people's edits repeatedly. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions in a content dispute within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. Rather than reverting, discuss disputed changes on the talk page. The revision you want is not going to be implemented by edit warring. Thank you. --KoberTalk 17:56, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:RUSSIA roll call and your input required

[edit]

Privet. You are receiving this message as you were listed on the membership list of WP:RUSSIA at Wikipedia:WikiProject Russia/Members. Recent times has seen minimal activity within WikiProject Russia, and there is an attempt to re-invigorate the project and have it become more organised into a fully-fledge functioning project, with the aim of increasing the quality of Russia-related articles across English wikipedia.

As we don't know which listed members are active within the project and Russia-related article, all listed members are receiving this message, and are requested to re-affirm their active status on Russia-related article by re-adding their username to Wikipedia:WikiProject Russia/Members by adding:

# {{User|YOURUSERNAME}}

to the membership list. You may also like to place {{User Russian Project}} on your userpage, as this will also place you in Category:WikiProject Russia members.

There is also an active proposal on the creation of a single WP:RUSSIA project. The proposal can be viewed at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Russia#Proposal_for_overhaul_and_creation_of_a_single_WP:RUSSIA_project, and your comments and suggestions are welcomed and encouraged at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Russia/Proposal.

We all look forward to your continued support of WP:RUSSIA and any comments you may have on the proposal. --Russavia Dialogue Stalk me 04:32, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello SergeiXXX! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 2 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 343 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

Birth rates

[edit]

Hi, regarding this, the page you linked is based on stats only up to November 1 2009 (По оценке, численность постоянного населения Российской Федерации на 1 ноября 2009г.) I had updated to according to data for all of 2009, where the birth rate fell by .1 in the last two months. Here is the latest info as of January 1 2010. LokiiT (talk) 20:34, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed. I noticed a strange phenomenon in Russia: over all, the birth rates ARE growing (12.1 in 2008 vs 12.4 in 2009; 11.5 in 2007 vs 12.1 in 2008), at the end of each of those years, they went down slightly (12.5 -> 12.4 in 2009, for example). I'll have to research this more to really see why this is. But if I had to say now, I'd say it is because of the New Year and Orthodox Christmas (as well as Muslim Kurban Bairam) celebrations. November, December, January is when everyone is celebrating and partying. Not a lot of people are conceiving during this time.--SergeiXXX (talk) 22:36, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, birth and death rates vary quite a bit by season, for a bunch of different reasons. The winter months see more deaths and less births, while in the summer it's the opposite. Here are some images that demonstrate this: deaths by month, natural population growth by month. There's a lot of useful info on the site Demoscope if you can read Russian. License tagging for File:Keosayan.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Keosayan.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 05:05, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Volgograd1.jpg. You don't seem to have said where the image came from, who created it, or what the copyright status is. File permission problem with File:Den vdv.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Den vdv.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Replaceable fair use File:Keosayan.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Keosayan.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Fut.Perf. 11:38, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Stories Project

[edit]

Hi!

My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia. I'm chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who make and use Wikipedia have so much to share.

I'm scouring user pages looking for inspiring, motivating and interesting stories of how Wikipedia has affected the lives of people. I'm asking questions like "How has Wikipedia changed your life?", "What's the most interesting story you have about Wikipedia?" and "Has Wikipedia ever surprised you?"

Your articles about actors are interesting!

Last year, we used the annual fundraiser as a way to show the world who it is who actually writes Wikipedia. We featured editors from Brazil, Ukraine, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, India, United States and England. This campaign was a huge success, resulting in the most financially successful fundraising campaign ever. It was also a campaign that stayed true to the spirit of Wikipedia, educating the public that this free top-5 website is created by volunteers like you and I.

This year we want to highlight more Russian-language Wikipedia editors, so I am in the process of planning a trip to Russia to interview editors.

If you or someone you know (or have heard about) has been positively affected by Wikipedia, or have something interesting to say about Wikipedia I'd very much like to hear about it!

Please let me know if you're inclined to take part in the Wikipedia Stories Project, or if you know someone else with whom I should speak.

Of course, if you have any questions or concerns, please ask! I will answer as soon as I can. I apologize for any poor translation of this letter, I am using Google-translate. I hope it makes you laugh :)

Thank you for your time,

Victor Grigas

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
