Bots Newsletter, August 2019

Bots Newsletter, August 2019

Greetings!

Here is the 7th issue of the Bots Newsletter, a lot happened since last year's newsletter! You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future newsletters by adding/removing your name from this list.

Highlights for this newsletter include:

ARBCOM
  • Nothing of note happened. Just like we like it.
BAG

BAG members are expected to be active on Wikipedia to have their finger on the pulse of the community. After two years without any bot-related activity (such as posting on bot-related pages, posting on a bot's talk page, or operating a bot), BAG members will be retired from BAG following a one-week notice. Retired members can re-apply for BAG membership as normal if they wish to rejoin the BAG.

We thank former members for their service and wish Madman a happy retirement. We note that Madman and BU Rob13 were not inactive and could resume their BAG positions if they so wished, should their retirements happens to be temporary.

BOTDICT

Two new entries feature in the bots dictionary

BOTPOL
  • Activity requirements: BAG members now have an activity requirement. The requirements are very light, one only needs to be involved in a bot-related area at some point within the last two years. For purpose of meeting these requirements, discussing a bot-related matter anywhere on Wikipedia counts, as does operating a bot (RFC).
  • Copyvio flag: Bot accounts may be additionally marked by a bureaucrat upon BAG request as being in the "copyviobot" user group on Wikipedia. This flag allows using the API to add metadata to edits for use in the New pages feed (discussion). There is currently 1 bot using this functionality.
  • Mass creation: The restriction on mass-creation (semi-automated or automated) was extended from articles, to all content-pages. There are subtleties, but content here broadly means whatever a reader could land on when browsing the mainspace in normal circumstances (e.g. Mainspace, Books, most Categories, Portals, ...). There is also a warning that WP:MEATBOT still applies in other areas (e.g. Redirects, Wikipedia namespace, Help, maintenance categories, ...) not explicitely covered by WP:MASSCREATION.
BOTREQs and BRFAs

As of writing, we have...

  • 20 active BOTREQs, please help if you can!
  • 14 open BRFAs and 1 BRFA in need of BAG attention (see live status).
  • In 2018, 96 bot task were approved. An AWB search shows approximately 29 were withdrawn/expired, and 6 were denied.
  • Since the start of 2019, 97 bot task were approved. Logs show 15 were withdrawn/expired, and 15 were denied.
  • 10 inactive bots have been deflagged (see discussion). 5 other bots have been deflagged per operator requests or similar (see discussion).

DYK not updating

The DYK update bot hasn't updated the template. SL93 (talk) 01:24, 9 August 2019 (UTC)

I've started up DYKUpdateBot again, thanks for letting me know! Shubinator (talk) 03:40, 9 August 2019 (UTC)

New untranscluded DYK nominations list?

Shubinator, I realize it has only been about seven weeks since I last asked, but I was hoping I could get a new list of the untranscluded nominations next time you have a chance to run one, now that I have a bit more free time. I'm hoping that there are fewer than last time, and that I can take care of them before they become too old. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:34, 12 August 2019 (UTC)

No worries, here you go! Untranscluded noms:
Shubinator (talk) 05:28, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
Many thanks. They're all taken care of. I was surprised there weren't more this time. BlueMoonset (talk) 23:57, 15 August 2019 (UTC)

DYKHousekeepingBot and DYKUpdateBot down

Shubinator, the bot last ran at 01:33 today, yet there have been several approvals, a few nominations, and at least half a dozen promotions to prep in the past 7+ hours, any one of which would normally result in a twice-hourly bot check generating a new table. I took a look, and there weren't any missing tags (like having a small tag not cancelled out), at least not that I could see. Thanks for whatever you can do to get this running again. BlueMoonset (talk) 08:23, 7 September 2019 (UTC)

DYKUpdateBot is also down. Gatoclass (talk) 14:46, 7 September 2019 (UTC)

I've restarted both bots, they're back in action! Thanks for letting me know. The bot logs don't show anything unusual, so not sure what went wrong. Shubinator (talk) 04:55, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

DYKHousekeepingBot down?

The last update was at 10:48 UTC, and there have been many changes to the DYK list since then without a further update. (DYKUpdateBot ran at 12:00, but since the first DYKHousekeepingBot change wasn't until 13:26, that doesn't mean that both aren't down.) I did see whether there were any unclosed tags, like "small", causing issues, and didn't see any, but that doesn't mean I didn't miss something.

At any rate, please check both bots the next time you're online, and I'll add a warning to the DYK talk page that the bot may be down. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 19:24, 17 September 2019 (UTC)

Well, DYKUpdateBot ran at 00:00, 18 September 2019 (UTC), so it's still in the game, but we still haven't heard from DYKHousekeepingBot. Please take a look when you get the chance. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:41, 18 September 2019 (UTC)
I've started up DYKHousekeepingBot, it's back in action! This time the bot's process itself was dead, again no indication why in the logs. Thanks for letting me know! Shubinator (talk) 06:50, 18 September 2019 (UTC)

DYKUpdateBot failed to update

DYKUpdateBot failed to run. 20 minutes late. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 00:23, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

Update: a manual update has be executed and FYI we are back to 1/day schedule. Cheers. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 01:27, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
(edit conflict) This time DYKHousekeepingBot stayed up, but DYKUpdateBot wasn't the only bot to go down around then—MusikBot also didn't do its DYK-related bot run (on Template talk:Did you know, where it adjust the Current nominations section every midnight); it's last update was at 22:40, so the interruption would likely have happened between then and midnight. DYKHousekeepingBot ran at 22:30, 00:00, and 01:00, so it survived whatever bot carnage was unleashed. Vanamonde did a manual update of the main page in DYKUpdateBot's absence, so we're all set until the next midnight, DYK having just gone back to one set a day with the manually updated set. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:28, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
This might be a clue as to why. For the last few hours, I've been sporadically getting this message across Wikipedia, Commons, etc.,"Our servers are currently under maintenance or experiencing a technical problem. Please try again in a few minutes. Error: 503, Backend fetch failed..." It's been going on for a while. — Maile (talk) 01:32, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
Sounds like the same thing, the bot's logs show a ton of logspam around parsing Wikipedia's API results. It recovered on its own at ~01:19 UTC, and appears to be running smoothly now. Shubinator (talk) 05:08, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

Feature request: place {{DYK talk}} above templates with prefix {{Did you know nominations/...}} and not below

There was a not so recent change to DYK nomination templates so that, after they are promoted, they are no longer disappear/hide on Talk pages in which they are hidden. This creates a strange effect on talk pages. See this edit I made. Can DYKUpdateBot be taught to recognize templates with prefix {{Did you know nominations/...}} and place {{DYK talk}} above them instead of below them? Cheers. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 01:59, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

@Coffeeandcrumbs: I'll take a look the next time I tinker with that code, though to be honest, I don't know when that'll be. Shubinator (talk) 05:45, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

Another new untranscluded DYK nominations list

Shubinator, it's been about eight weeks since the last list, so I was hoping you could run another one for me. It's easier if we get to them before they're too old, and I thought it would be nice to tackle them now rather than later. Whenever it's convenient for you is fine with me. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 03:33, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

Sure, here you go!

Shubinator (talk) 03:57, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, Shubinator. Sorry to be so long getting back to you, but it's been unexpectedly busy the last few days, enough so that I'm only now checking back. I'll probably clean these up over the weekend. BlueMoonset (talk) 08:46, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

DYKUpdateBot did not update the main page at 00:00, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

Shubinator, DYKUpdateBot didn't run at midnight UTC (about 25 minutes ago now). DYKHousekeepingBot is running, however, most recently at 00:05, 24 October 2019 (UTC), so it should be fine.

I have put out a call for admins to do a manual update; please check to see whether one is ongoing when you see this, since it could happen at any moment (or maybe not even for some time). Thank you very much! BlueMoonset (talk) 00:25, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

I've started up the bot again, it's back up and running! Thanks for letting me know. Shubinator (talk) 04:55, 24 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks once again for the quick response :) Gatoclass (talk) 05:27, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

DYKHousekeepingBot appears to be down

Shubinator, DYKHousekeepingBot's last edit was at 23:16, 28 November 2019‎ (UTC). It should have run again about an hour later, since the Nominations page acquired the new listing for 29 November (edit at 00:01), plus a new nomination was transcluded at 05:11, which should have caused another bot edit at around 05:17. I suspect that the bot is down.

DYKUpdateBot did its run between 00:00 and 00:03, and then cleared its Errors at 00:13. This isn't a guarantee that it hasn't since gone down, but it would have been a short window between 00:13 and 00:16 or 00:17, when DYKHousekeepingBot was clearly down. Anyway, I'll leave it to you to check. Thank you very much. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:36, 29 November 2019 (UTC)

It started editing again at 11:47, so I'm guessing you saw this. Thanks for pushing it back into motion! BlueMoonset (talk) 22:24, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
Bot recovered on its own actually :) Looks like it was having trouble parsing the noms page and this was fixed up between 11:17 and 11:47. Happy Thanksgiving! Shubinator (talk) 07:58, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
Happy Thanksgiving to you as well! The odd thing is that, based on that information, the edit that would have messed things up was MusikBot adding the November 29 section at 00:01 here, and the one that fixed things would have been the edit at 11:35 that added a new nomination transclusion here. I don't see any other edits in the given time period to either the Nominations or Approved pages that might affect your bot. Very strange. Although, come to think of it, there might also have been an edit to one of the 300+ transcluded nominations that caused a problem in the hour after 23:16 that might have been fixed between 11:17 and 11:47. At least it's working now! Thanks for checking into it. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:13, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

DYKUpdateBot is down ... update did not happen

@Shubinator: The DYKUpdateBot seems to be down, and no update happened since yesterday. — Maile (talk) 00:27, 13 December 2019 (UTC)

Resolved, conversation at WT:DYK#DYKUpdateBot is down ... update did not happen. Shubinator (talk) 07:14, 13 December 2019 (UTC)

Yet another new untranscluded DYK nominations list

Shubinator, I thought it would be a good idea to do an end-of-the-year cleanup of any untranscluded DYK nominations; you last generated one for me in early October. If you could get me a new list when you have time, that would be great. Many thanks, and I hope you're having a great holiday season. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:44, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

Here you go, happy holidays! Untranscluded noms:
Shubinator (talk) 06:22, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
Thank you. That's a lot of untranscluded nominations. I'll start tackling them later today. BlueMoonset (talk) 08:30, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
Okay, first round done. Do you think you'd mind if I asked for new lists every month to six weeks? This was quite a long list, and I'd like to catch them sooner. If that's too often, I'll keep to every other month if that's okay. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 19:10, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
Sure, every month to six weeks is fine :) Shubinator (talk) 03:11, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
