Looking for an adopter

[edit]

Hi SriMesh!

I saw that 'Adopt' project, thought I would need it and your name was listed. I have about 30 articles done (mostly in French, but this one and this one in English) but now I'm trying to start a WikiProject and a Portal with it (the subject is Java, a language for computers) and I'd like some tips, especially on the administrative side of it (members, tasks, templates for it, toolserver bots, etc.). Thanks for any help, AlainR345TechnoWikiGeek 00:05, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dear SriMesh,
I noticed you added stuff to the WikiProject page and I thank you for that.
But in asking for an adopter, I was not expecting THAT kind of interaction from you.
After all, you do not have to be interested in Java for instance (or maybe you are?).
Like I first told you, my needs are more in the area of advice on Projects and Portals.
So for the time being, I'll take your action as a 'yes' to my adoption request and I'll ask you a favor and 4 questions.
The favor: please would you go to this page and put your name on it.
The questions:
  • Where should we put the templates related to the Project/Portal, in the Template: or Wikipedia: namespace (I've seen both in other projects so I'm mixed up)?
For templates use the template namespace.
  • How could we get a 'list of all articles connected to a Category (AND subcategories of it)' IN a template? (the only way I could make one was to manually edit an output from the CatScan tool which is pretty primitive...)
For getting a list of all articles connected to a category (and its subcategories), Auto Wiki Browser AWB does that (and more ... check it out) or the category tree command]. Putting the category tree command into a template would do it, if it is the same thing you are picturing.
  • How could we get a 'list of most recent articles connected to a Category (AND subcategories of it)' IN a template? (again only CatScan seems to do that primitively)
The AlexNewArtBot will find new articles with or without categories depending on the programming of it, but it needs to have a human to identify false positives. I think you would like to do this task with a BOT, but I have not made a wikipedia BOT myself, just used ones others have made which can be searched through at Wikipedia:Bots. Place any additional requests at Wikipedia:Bot requests and you will meet up with someone to let you know if it has been done already or can be done. I scanned User made scripts for WP and this particular request has not been done from a quick overview, and they also answer queries on their talk page.
  • Finally, a more human-side question: how would you proceed in order to 'insert' a new Project/Portal (put links) into existing ones, the so-called 'parent' and 'sister' Projects/Portals? At first I thought about editing those Projects/Portals myself; but I'm not sure it's a good idea because I'm NOT part of those other Projects (and I have no time to be); should I asked somebody to do it and if so, who should I ask?
Putting the information about your new WP / Portal on parent/sister WP / Portals yourself is OK, WP can always be re-edited and changed....or you can add the information to their talk page, and the members of the WP/Portal can see your information/request there. It could be the volunteers on those WP portals are in the same boat time wise, but talk pages are good contact places, and reach a wide variety of editors.

Again thanks for your help, AlainR345TechnoWikiGeek 08:13, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about getting off on the wrong foot, I hope this helps you with your specific questions, and gives you more folks to contact as well.SriMesh | talk 16:53, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the comments on the various talk pages. That AWB is the new thing I've got to get acquainted with at some point. AlainR345TechnoWikiGeek 05:36, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again SriMesh, the Java portal is now launched! English proofreading at this point would be important if we don't want to be the laughing stock of the planet. Since the current members are not so good at English (I'm French-speaking), we can't really do it. I have a hunch that you are the best placed to do it because you are external to this project. What do you think? Could you give it a try... I don't feel there are THAT much problems but I think it's still a must-do (if you don't want to edit the pages, just send me a list of mistakes). Thanks for any help, --Alainr345 03:08, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi again SriMesh, now the Java portal is launched, but we did not link much to it yet because of the proofreading issue, we'll see if somebody takes the poll on that. In any case, I've got some other questions that you may have ideas on given your expertise: 1) Where should we tag {{Portal|Java|Duke (Java mascot) waving.svg}}: on some Java categories, on all Java categories, on some Java articles, on all Java articles? Different projects seem to take different approaches to that and although I would personally go wide just for publicity-sake, I don't want to have the whole Wikipedia community on my back...

2) Is there a better way to screen for untagged Java material than that kind of twisted search I wrote here? It's obviously tiresome to build and is not permanent because categories evolve over time; It's not directly applicable to other namespaces (Quote,News, etc.) as categories are not the same; CatScan does not do that either; Is there a BOT somewhere for that very common need of any project I guess (I can't use AWB yet, they say my edit count is not big enough)?

3) Like you suggested, we need to discuss WPBanner hooks with the Computing project in order to get specific Quality-rating statistics for Java articles without having our own Quality assessment: what do you think about that compromise?

|tf 5={{{Java|}}}
|TF_5_LINK = Wikipedia:WikiProject Java
|TF_5_NAME = WikiProject Java
|TF_5_NESTED = Java
|TF_5_TEXT = & nbsp;
|TF_5_IMAGE =
|TF_5_QUALITY = yes
|TF_5_IMPORTANCE = no
|TF_5_ASSESSMENT_CAT = Java articles
  • B) Then we can put this kind of tags in all Java-related talk pages and get both our own Importance rating and their Quality rating:
{{WikiProject_Computing|class=|importance=|Java=yes}}
{{WikiProject_Java|importance=Mid}}

Hi again SriMesh,

Could you back me up as you did the first time: please look at my new proposal, Thanks for the help,

hello... well i think we are close...can i just get you to double check 3 things she mentors ..when you have time no rush, i have tryed to see them all but...
  • There are a number of run-on sentences that should be corrected

and

  • There are still some problems with grammar and flow - read through carefully to find awkward or confusing passages

Then i guess we can do the last 2 things...

  • As it stands, the lead section reads like the introduction to an essay. It should be rewritten to conform to an encyclopedic tone.
  • For an article of this length, the lead should be 3-4 paragraphs.

Notable People From Prince Albert Section

[edit]

This has been bugging me how it was changed from bulleted to sentence form. Its a cluster of mess. That's why I haven't attempted to revert it. Can you put it back to being bulleted with all that information? It looked better bulleted. Mr. C.C. (talk) 20:19, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. You don't see other articles with that section in paragraphed form. Mr. C.C. (talk) 05:38, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A separate article in list format for this not necessary because there is not enough entries for it. The Radciliffe section is paragraph is because there is nothing to it. Caversham is good because its not part paragraph and part bulleted. That the problem I am seeing with that section in the Prince Albert article. Summer Hill is good because it is all bulleted. I like the Youngstown article of notable people. I would be up for doing a table version of the list. We don't have to have the individual sections until it gets overflowing with names. Mr. C.C. (talk) 04:12, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help. Mr. C.C. (talk) 18:11, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I seen it, but I alphabetized it. Will try to expand it when necessary. Now that I think about it, there is a person or two that could be added to the the list. Will get on that before I forget. Mr. C.C. (talk) 07:43, 27 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Welcome
  • We’re excited to announce that User:Presidentman has joined WikiProject Saskatchewan as our Editor in Chief. Presidentman will oversee editorial content and the Saskatchewan Wikiproject community contributions on the Wikiproject newsletter. Presidentman has also successfully developed the Picture of the Day project and has been active on wikipedia for close to three years in a plethora of projects enriching wikipedia with close to 3,000 contributions. The transition between our old editor and the new has been smoother than any of us could have hoped for — SriMesh wrote their last newsletter article for January, 2010, and Presidentman started up without missing a beat for February 2010. The previous years for SriMesh, the past editor, had been richly rewarding, seeing subscriptions grow, informing interested editors of developments and changes to the Saskatchewan wikipedia community and supporting activities on the Saskatchewan Wikiproject. It is now time for me to move to new writing projects to finish, and further responsibilities which are vying for my attention. Please join me in welcoming Presidentman to the their new position! Presidentman is working on a host of new features and an updated look, which will take things to a new level. It is wonderful to have a new editor to bring in the new year! Expect great things.
Welcome Presidentman, and best wishes!
Your wonderful act of kindness to take on editorial capacity of the Saskatchewan Wikiproject news letter is much appreciated! Thank you so much!!!

Kind Regards, SriMesh | talk 18:36, 24 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for your contributions to Wikipedia. I'm sorry to say that the outcome of this discussion was deletion. Lists of this kind should be posted in one of three places: 1) on the article's main talk page -- not in a subpage; 2) on a WikiProject page/subpage out of article and article talk space; or 3) in userspace. Orphan subpages of lists that contain something useful should be merged into the main article talk page or moved to a WikiProject; otherwise, should they be devoid of anything valuable, they may be speedy deleted as A3 (no content) or G6 (housekeeping) without an MfD request. Please do not leave lists sitting around on orphaned talk pages in the future, as they may be deleted without warning. Should you require any further assistance, I would be happy to help. A tag has been placed on File:Iceberg with hole 2.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi, would you be so kind as to give us support!

[edit]

Hello, I hope you're doing fine and I sincerely apologize for this intrusion, I understand too well what it is to deal with family, work and wikipedia among other things... I've just read your profile and saw that you've worked on articles about Canadian Native unhabitants and you seem to be a learned person interested in many things and among them minorities and perhaps being Canadian helps you understand what are an endangered language and culture and maybe I am not bothering you and you will help us... I'm a member of a Catalan association "Amical de la Viquipèdia" which is trying to get some recognition as a Catalan Chapter but this hasn't been approved up to that moment. We would appreciate your support, visible if you stick this on your first page: Wikimedia CAT. You can have more information at[[2]], unfortunately this link is only in Catalan but there are pages in English somewhere. Supporting us will be like giving equal opportunity to minorized languages and cultures in the future! Thanks again, wishing you a great summer, take care! Keep on preserving the rich diversity of your country! Capsot (talk) 07:29, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 20:47, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article In Wrong Category

[edit]

I was the at WP:SKCN B-class article category and Notable Aboriginal people of Canada was listed in it. I was thinking that putting the WP:SK banner in it that it automatically adds SKCN stuff to it. Or am I wrong? Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 03:44, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If it can be corrected, then it should be done. But if not, then it's a big deal. I think it should be looked into if nothing else. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 04:17, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like Moxy did it....So the category should be cleaned up next time the robot runs to do the count etc which it is assigned to do periodically like a timed alarm clock... SriMesh | talk

Adopt-a-user reminder

[edit]

Hello, I have completed a general cleanup of the adopter information page for the adopt-a-user project, located here. During my cleanup, I have removed several inactive and retired users. In order to provide interested adoptees with an easy location to find adopters, it is essential that the page be up-to-date with the latest information possible. Thus:

  • If you are no longer interested in being an adopter, please remove yourself from the list.
  • If you are still interested, please check the list to see if any information needs to be updated or added - especially your availability. Thank you.
  • You are receiving this message because you are listed as an adopter here.

An update from adopt a user

[edit]

Hi there SriMesh! You may be wondering, what have I done to sound the alarm this time? Nothing. I'm messaging you in regards to the adopt-a-user program, which currently has a backlog of users wishing to be adopted. This doesn't make much sense, as we have a considerable list of users offer adoption, so there shouldn't be any backlog. I've begun to eliminate this backlog myself through a matching program, but I need your help to make it work. Of course, adoptees and adopters don't have to go through there, but I believe it helps eliminate the backlog because someone is actively matching pairs.

On the list of adopters, I have modified the middle column to say "Interests." It's easier working with other users that have similar interests, so if it's not too much to ask, could you add your interests in the middle column? For example, if I was interested in hurricanes, computers, business, and ... reptiles? I would place those in the middle column. Counter-vandalism and the like can also be included (maintenance should be used as the general term). The more interests, the better, since adoptees can learn more about you and choose the one they feel most comfortable working with. The information about when you're most active and other stuff can go into the "Notes" section to the right.

Finally, I've gone around and asked adoptees (and will in the future) to fill in a short survey so adopters can take the initiative and contact users they feel comfortable working with. We all know that most adoptees just place the adopt me template on their user page and leave it - so it's up to us to approach them and offer adoption. So, please take a look at the survey, adopt those that fit your interests, and maybe watchlist it so you can see the interests of adoptees and adopt one that fits your interests in the future.

Once again, thank you for participating in the adopt-a-user program! If you wish to respond to this post, please message me on my talk page.
