Amanita muscaria

I couldn't figure out where to post an answer on your page. In Allan Pipps master's thesis for Flordida International University, 2000, he states that that A. muscaria "are harvested by rural inhabitants of Sanada Town, Japan. These mountai villagers consume beni-tengu-take as a local delicacy....." P.v. I know that David Arora went there to meet Allan and may know how widespread the use is. I will ask him. I am writing a short book on the culinary uses of A. muscaria and will go there in the fall of 2009 or 2010 to learn more. The use in Sanada is widespread but in direct answer to your question I don't know how widespread its use is in the mountains of that province. Japanese mushroom field guides and web sites generally list the mushroom as hugely poisonous and, in keeping with international norms, do not reference ethnographic practices.

I will start working on the A. muscaria entry. The picture of my ex-wife collecting in Lithuania that is posted on the page was collecting for culinary use. I spent four months on the Economic Botany article and can contribute quite a lot to the entry. I have several writing deadline in the next few months but will begin to work on the entry. There is a huge amount of information on its edibility. The shamanistic aspect is probably being over-emphasized. This seems to be a late twentieth century interest. Of course, we are all products of our culture, and our culture's interests. I write about food, not drugs!

I had posted the recipe because in the Economic Botany article I make a stupid conversion error -- 4oz to 250g. A correction will be published in Economic Botany but the recipe as published there is already leaking out to the web. I was thinking that the best defense would be publication on the Wikipedia. I now see why this can't be.

I have contributed to a couple other articles before and once I get my life a little more organized will do so more frequently. There are several areas in which I have deep knowledge that would help the project.

Eliza Smith

It isn't clear where the Eliza comes from. In her lifetime her books were published under the initials, E.S. Upon her death (the only report of which is by her publisher in the 5th edition) her name is published as E. Smith. All modern library indexes and biographies give her name as Eliza. However, given we have no birth or even confirmed death date and no other solid biographical information, this may be a guess.

Should her name thus be listed as E. (Eliza?) Smith. Or, Eliza? Smith.William Rubel (talk) 10:52, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
