AfD of Paippad

Hi there. I see you recently tagged the Paippad article with an AfD template, but didn't follow through with making a page for it's entry. Let me give you a few tips that I would have found helpful when I made that same mistake during my first few days of Wikipedia. First, for an article such as the one you tagged, a Speedy Delete tag would have been more appropriate, as the page was more or less nonsense and/or a test page. Under those conditions, an article may be deleted by an administrator without having to go through the regular deletion process that a normal page would have to go through. When you do find an article you think should be deleted that doesn't qualify for a speedy deletion, the teplate you put on the page is appropriate. However, that is only the first of 3 steps you have to go through to nominate a page for deletion. If you click on the link at the bottom left of the AfD template, titled "How to list a page for deletion", it will guide you through the steps, which might be a little tricky the first time but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. I would also like to point out that the person who created Paippad is a brand new user to Wikipedia, and while right now this is deletion material, you can see from the edit history that they are constantly making new edits to this page trying to improve it. From this You can tell that this person is not a vandal and they are making edits in good faith, and in cases like these I would tend to hold off on tagging for deletion someone's brand new page they created and give them a little more time to improve it. If they abandon the page and leave it as is, I would tag it, but I'd give it a chance for the editor to bring it up to Wikipedia's standards before that. I'll delete the AfD tag you added for now, but feel free to add a speedy deletion tag (either the {{db-nonsense}} or {{db-test}} template) if the article doesn't significantly improve soon. Constantinople Picture

The image is not really digitally recreated. It's an artist's illustration of the city, drawn by hand. But, there's no information on who draw it or the accuracy of the image. Latter digital modification was merely to revert the original digital additions on the image. A caption like "Artist's illustraion of Constantinople" would be more appropriate. Re:Rama pic

Hi WoodElf - the image of Rama used in one of your userboxes is a copyrighted, fair use image, and cannot be used beyond the article Rama. Its present PD-generic tag is invalid. FAC's

I noticed that you are weary of all the sci-fi and other popular types of Featured Articles. I have currently posted a philosophy candidate. There are only 6 or 7 philosophy FAs on Wikipedia and I wrote one of them philosophy of mind. I am now trying to get Jerry Fodor through, but it is not going well. You might want to take a look at it and perhaps support something different??? BTW, there is no collaboration on philosophy articles. Philosophers just snipe at each other or, if they don't really know the material (99% of the cases) they will not touch it. Riviera (continent)

Hi. I saw your addition of the Riviera (continent) page and I'd just like to offer a word of advice. Since Riviera is such a low-key game (I love it, but it's definitely not Final Fantasy), it would probably be best to add to the main Riviera: The Promised Land page before splitting them off into smaller pages. Also, it might help to be aware of Wikipedia's policy on writing about fiction. It would be a tragedy to see all that work go to waste when you find your page on Articles for deletion and the more strict editors saying to delete. This goes for your individual character articles that I see on the navigation box at the bottom of that page too.

Editing

Hello WoodElf. I notice that you've been doing a lot of editing of some Japan related articles lately, and many of your changes have been quite good. I just wanted to share something that a lot of people don't think about. Every time an article is saved, it is archived on Wikipedia's servers. That means that if you save an article 10 times to make 10 minor edits, you are using up 10 times more server space than if you made 10 edits and just save it once. And, as you can see by the fund drive that is going on right now, Wikipedia is not rich by any means. One thing you might try is moving the text into a text editor on your computer end editing it there (this will also prevent you from loosing your edits if Wikipedia fails to save properly). It is also helpful if you use preview to review your changes before actually hitting save.-Jefu 13:07, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

The "Yayoi" passage in Japan; see Talk:Japan#Suggesting "China and Korea"

I was hoping that you can comment again, regarding where the "Yayoi" came from, at Talk:Japan#Suggesting "China and Korea"?

Our current discussion is between the following 2 choices:

Option 1 — Most recent consensus (as of 3 January 2007)...

• The Yayoi period, starting around the third century BC, introduced new practices, such as wet-rice farming, iron and bronze-making and a new style of pottery, brought by migrants from the Chinese mainland and the Korean peninsula. With the development of Yayoi culture, a predominantly agricultural society emerged on the Japanese archipelago.

• The points that differ are: "from the Chinese mainland and the Korean peninsula" in the 1st sentence, and "on the Japanese archipelago" in the 2nd sentence.
• Pros: Some of us claim this is the more stable and accurate wording, using "Korean peninsula" instead of "Korea", and will prevent any potential revert-wars.
• Cons: Detractors claim it is "original research" to replace "China", "Korea", and "Japan" with "the Chinese mainland", "the Korean peninsula", and "the Japanese archipelago", based on wording used by the majority of sources.
• This wording was agreed upon (on 3 Jan.) by the 5 of us: Endroit, Jefu, HongQiGong, LordAmeth, and John Smith's.

Option 2 — Currently suggested wording...

• The Yayoi period, starting around the third century BC, introduced new practices, such as wet-rice farming, iron and bronze-making and a new style of pottery, brought by migrants from China and Korea. With the development of Yayoi culture, a predominantly agricultural society emerged in Japan.

I think we might get the FA, but to try to stave off any more complaints I think we need to standardise the citations using those formatted "cite.....url=..........title=....." things. Queen Mab

Hey, I was the one who removed the quote before, thinking it far too long. I did first create the entry on wikiquote, copying the quote to that page before removing it here. I don't know if someone has since deleted it (?), but wanted to let you know that it did exist at one time. I wouldn't just have dumped the passage entirely. :) Aleta 21:44, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Chokher Bali

Hi Woodelf,I see you've reverted edits by myself as well as by rueben lys in the page on Chokher Bali. I am a native bengali speaker too, and I am pretty sure the meaning of the phrase is someone you love too much (eg, Tui amar chokher bali), and not something you dislike. I think you're interpreting the phrase literally, and consequently the meaning is being mis-interpreted. Care to get a second opinion?Dudewheresmywallet 17:23, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Well, the problem is I ma not too much sure what does it really mean. I will try to confirm and then only comment. "Choker Bali means the sand that causes disruption to eyes", says this, and, "Bali, a contraction of Chokher Bali, which means "sand in the eye", an indication of the physical closeness of the two, but also, perhaps, an unconscious intimation of the tension and distress that will arise from their proximity." says this! In regards to your image problems that you seem to be having, I would like to recommend using Wiki Commons. There you can find images that you can be sure you can use safely, and you don't even need to bother with annoying tags and upload processes. There are also a very large wealth of images, so you can be sure to find something for everything. I hope that you don't take offence at this help, or find it irritating, but when I stumbled across your user and talk page, it became apparent that you are probably suffering the same problems about images and maybe needing help that I myself had, and not so long ago. The references are at the bottom, the footnotes, note the page and author of the references. I am not going to sit there and agonizingly type of every one of the entirety of the book references, when mentioning the author and page goes straight to notes, and the refrences are right under those notes. I would find it idiotic to type in every info on a book for a small note, when the same books that are referenced are mentioned at the bottom of the page. It wouldn't make much sense to me. But if you feel that its that big of a deal, you can do that one yourself. I could add some more data on the footnotes, but the entire book ISBN etc is not needed, especially [again] considering the references are right under the footnotes. Check: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Footnotes I see that some ppl have added more on the refs, but its not a huge deal to me. I will fix some fo the refs though, and notes, later.

The other thing, if this is about the Burney relief: Many scholars on Lilith (Patai, Hurwitz, Kramer) usually consider it to be Lilith based on the Sumer Gilgamesh fragment translated by Kramer. However, the relief is Babylonian and scholars outside of Lilith do not generally consider this to be Lilith, anymore. Altho, Hurwitz gives both sides of the debate, but his opinion is that it is Lilith. I have more than one more modern book that says that it is Ishtar/Inanna. And indeed even the museum it is held at gives 3 explanations to its identity.[2] But its important to mention because theres still alot of ppl that believe that it is Lilith or still use it to represent her, especially among neopagans. The other thing is the translation: The Burney Relief may not be generally considered to be Lilith anymore under modern scholarship, but the translation of Gilgamesh is considered authentic by most scholars. Few doubt it, and those that do by pass some key identification. For example the owl and bird feet association. Both debates are controversial, so its sometimes hard to write in a manner that would be considered neutural and some sources do regard it as "dubious" or the connection with Lilith and the relief.

With regard to this edit which you made to the article on Bangalore, earlier this month, it seems that the change in the official name is still pending, yet needing approval from the national government and from Bangalore's populace. Unless you have definite and authoritative information to the contrary, please revert your edit. I'd do it myself (and will, if need be), but I thought it better to ask you first, in case you know something the rest of the article's editorship does not, and because the a self-reversion would be less controversial.
