Vietnam stubs

[edit]

Hi thanks for your Vietnam related entries but do you think you could categorize them accordingly, even create new categories if they don't exist. E.g Category:Buddhist temples in Vietnam etc. Just makes them easier to find later Thanks ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 00:07, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry. I always get to them. I have been writing them all up to 4-5k size, so it'll be done. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 00:09, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I also aim to do some more work on Vietnam when I get around to it. I;ve developed some Laos articles a bit and of course I created most of the district articles of Burma and Cambodia. E.g Luang Prabang I've bene adding infoboxes etc with locator maps and images. Makes a difference! Beautiful part of the world south-east asia. Regards ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 00:12, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. What things are you looking at?? I borrowed a copy of the Lonely Planet Vietnam book and I'm surprised that most of the landmarks in the LP book don't have articles on VN. I also created an article for all the 650 odd districts. I'm suprised that 3 weeks later, about 6 of them had been expanded by random anons. I had no idea that anons like to add content to stubs but apparently only once the stubs exist and that they seem unwilling to register so that they create an article. So, I might do more stub creating drives... Blnguyen (bananabucket) 01:35, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stub drives? Lol check the new pages now. Exactly what I'm doing!!! Yes Lonely PLanet is good -I'll try to get hold of one for Laos. I've flown over it via Hong Kong to Bangkok and the scenery is tremendous ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 01:37, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User_talk:Blnguyen/Archive73#Re:Districts_of_Vietnam - All the 650 odd districts have their articles, but I haven't inserted the population and land area stats in there yet. The raw data comes from here but the site is very slow to navigate. The site is slow and it is in map form, so you have to clcik on the coloured object to get the popn and area for the given district. Mercifully, another fellow has written down all the district stats here. The first government site also has all the stats for communes/wards (phuong/xa), the next level down from the districts. However, there has been nobody who has compiled a list of stats for us, so someone would have to click on each of the coloured blobs to get the info out (or go to vi.wikipedia and get it from there if it's quicker). I can help you to understand the navigation procedure if you want. You click the province from teh scroll down list, then you see a map of hte province. On the RHS, you choose "Phuong/Xa" from the click box and then click on the "i" icon on the LHS on the map to go into info mode. Then you click the various blobs to get the population (Dân số ) and area (Diện tích, in hectares) in the RHS. "Tên hành chính" is the name of the zone, and "Kiểu hành chính" tells you what type of zone it is, in this case "Xã" and below it will tell you the district (Huyện) and province (Tỉnh) that it belongs to. Thanks for trying to give me a barnstar

[edit]

Thank you for apparently trying to give me a barnstar, but it looks like something went wrong with the templating. I have no idea how to fix it myself, or even if it would be OK for me to fix it myself, or if that would be gaudy.--Bedford 01:27, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Note

[edit]

Thanks for your note here. Next week is actually my two year anniversary, and I'm also approaching my 50th DYK and hope to get out a couple more FAs in the next month. In short: I was starting to think I might actually stand. I'm fairly certain, however, that my recent criticism of RFB (I'm alone among editors in good standing, I think, in that WJBscribe will not even respond to me) and opposing candidates means I wouldn't have a prayer of passing anytime soon. After I support Cla68's sandbox project my chances will be even dimmer. Maybe next year :) --JayHenry (talk) 06:03, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I took a look and it's good to go in my opinion. I'm unfortunately crashing fast and won't be able to do the next update, but hopefully having flagged it as okay, somebody will pick it up. (Hmm... maybe I should start doing DYKs on all the notable Henrys? ;) Cheers! --JayHenry (talk) 06:49, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, struck part of my above comment. Eventually did receive a very thoughtful response. --JayHenry (talk) 07:12, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Most number of hooks on the main page

[edit]

Hi, just saw the above addition to the Did you know? Hall of Fame. Do you mean the most number of hooks on the same day? If so, you may want to rephrase. Also, the link you provided ("31 October 2007") doesn't seem to evidence the statement clearly. — Cheers, JackLee talk 19:03, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, it was meant to be most number of hooks displayed at a time. It is 12 this time, as evidenced by the above diff. Previous record was 11. - KNM Talk 19:18, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I see. I think the wording needs to be made clearer – perhaps "Most number of hooks appearing together on the main page – 12, by Blnguyen on 31 October 2007". I thought what the statement was referring to was that BInguyen had been responsible for creating and nominating 12 successful DYKs which all appeared within a 24-hour period (which would be very unusual indeed!). — Cheers, JackLee talk 23:13, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, actually it would be possible to have 12 DYKs in one day if one wrote them all on a hard drive and then saved them up for one big day. Having said that, it would likely bottlneck the DYK queue, so it would only work if you did a multi-article hook, like above, where I sqaushed 8 articles into one hook - {{Dong Son culture}}. I should have released the set on Thien Mu Pagoda, Tu Dam Pagoda, Bao Quoc Pagoda and Dieu De Pagoda in a quad hook. Anyways, consistency is the key, I managed to prune and exonomise all those 12 hooks because we had a backlog but steady updating is the best way to go. Blnguyen (photo straw poll) 03:16, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This user is requesting unblocking. I can't figure out why he was blocked: he seems to have nominated Wicca for FAC status. The nomination may not have been a very good one, but I see no reason to block the user. I must be missing something. Mangojuicetalk 01:56, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel (talk) 07:18, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy, while there have been some minor wording changes, this article is still almost certainly a copyright violation. JackSchmidt (talk) 07:26, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy, I am not a lawyer (nor even a wiki-lawyer), so I can only give you my impression. I have had about 12 hours of instruction on copyright law as part of a degree, so I have some ideas as what things require a lawyer. The article has some of these signs, and so I think the wikimedia foundation would probably want the article considered copyvio, and rewritten.
Specifically, I think this article qualifies as a derived work. It appears that the a new artistic work (your article) was created by translation of the original copyrighted work, using synonym replacement (effectively, translating from English to English). The original author's creative energy paints a picture of the subject's life, and that painting is reproduced on wikipedia, even if the colors have changed a little. The facts contained within the article cannot be copyrighted, and objective statements have less protection under copyright law. However, imagery used within the article is likely to have much more protection.
The main problem with copyright law is that if the wikimedia foundation is found to be infringing copyright, the default penalty is around US$75,000 per infringement, aka, per page hit. With such a large amount of money at stake, it is wise to be cautious.
A simple short-term solution is to take the clearest, most essential facts from the obituary, and use them to write a stub/start class article of a few paragraphs. Then to complete the fix, find one more source for the material, and pull facts from both to write the article.
Let me know if there is some part that would be useful for me to explain, but to get a real explanation would require someone with at least a law degree, preferably someone who specializes in intellectual property. Since these people are expensive, the standard practice is to rewrite if there is doubt. JackSchmidt (talk) 08:38, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you
